Tradin’ Paint has something for everyone; I hope this show hits home for many people in this area and they enjoy watching it, just as much as I have enjoyed working on it. Look past the farcical nature of the NASCAR world presented in Tradin’ Paint to discover that it demonstrates how relationships change. As people allow themselves to grow, some of those relationships are forced to end while others endure. The play also deals with the importance of having hope—hope for love, hope for a career and a happy future, and hope to feel included. I love this show because it evokes many layers of emotion that create wonderful moments on the stage. I’m grateful for the rewarding opportunity to work on a production of a Catherine Bush play. Ms. Bush is a resident writer for the Barter Theatre. She is a well-known and respected Appalachian feminist playwright, whose love for Appalachian culture and its people shines through in this play. After being selected as the 2006 winner of Barter Theatre’s Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights, Tradin’ Paint has been produced all over the United States. I would like to thank everyone in ETSU’s Division of Theatre & Dance, especially Bobby Funk, who has been a wonderful mentor—not only on this show but during my last four years here at ETSU. — Brock Cooley, Director
