HOME AND GIFT SHOW REVIEW

Home and Gift Show Review - Top Forty Companies HIGH QUALITY BUYERS ON THE HUNT FOR NEW TRENDS AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGNERS CONTRIBUTE TO RECORD BREAKING HOME & GIFT! In the midst of glorious sunshine, a successful Home & Gift show took place from 14-17 July 2013 at Harrogate International Centre, Cairn and Majestic Hotels, Harrogate. This year, Home & Gift saw the next generation of contemporary and design led gifts, homewares and fashion accessories take centre stage. The show, regarded to be the retailers’ favourite buying event, enabled visitors to update their stock and trial products in time for the busiest retail period of the year. Simply put, it was the must-attend event for any retailer wishing to stay ahead on the high street. Despite the heat wave, buying and networking went on uninterrupted. Home & Gift’s unrivalled location and sociable atmosphere made for an unbeatable trading platform; a record 61% of exhibitors rebooked onsite for the 2014 show favouring the organising team’s future development plans.

Introducing Spotlight & Award Winners Spotlight launched in Hall G at this year’s Home & Gift. The area evolved as a result of a re-brand of the Intro North section in 2012; an area dedicated to bringing together a collection of innovative new designers and emerging businesses from across the UK . The launch of ‘Spotlight’ was marked with a drinks reception which was attended by the exhibitors, their guests and the Mayor of Harrogate. The Spotlight awards were also created to commemorate the new section of the show and to recognise the unique products available in the Hall. Judges included: Best New Product Winner: Chalk Wovens G37 Judged by: Sarah Sevier, Director of Brand, Design & Buying for V&A Enterprises Runners-up: Dandylion Jack G36, Irish Country House Collection G111 and Whale Bags G56 Best Stand Design Winner: Ohh Deer! G48 Judged by: Ian Rudge, Development Director of Clarion Events Trends Among the multitude of new exhibitors and product launches,

nostalgia continued to stand out as a key trend. Half Moon Bay with their classic retro gifts and Alice Hannah with their vintage fashion collection were just such examples. Animal motifs were also prominent; Jo Clark Design with woodland characters and Leslie Gerry with farmyard inspired designs were a prime demonstration of this. Eco-friendly brands were also on the up, with Best Product Runner Up - Whale Bags - setting a good precedent. Buyer Interest Home & Gift 2013 saw renewed optimism in the retail market as a number of influential buyers from department stores and independent retailers alike descended on Harrogate including: Fenwick, Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Hoopers, Scribbler, V&A, Urban Outfitters, HEALS, Museum Selection, House of Cards, and Tesco.

The quality of buyers was well summed up by director Annie Rockley of Peppertrees, “This is our 9th year at Home & Gift and every year we have seen a healthy increase in orders. We look forward to returning next year.” Looking Ahead: The Future of Home & Gift On the back of this pivotally successful show, the organisers of Home & Gift look to the future and the exciting developments they plan to undertake. “As the newly appointed show director of Home & Gift, I couldn’t be happier with the results of this year’s show. Home & Gift is clearly an unmissable event for buyers from across country and beyond. Our long term objective is not only to make more of Home & Gift’s unique setting by unveiling new features but driving the content forward, introducing contemporary offerings of Home & Gift favourites to better serve the changing needs of the market and our buyers.” Cleere Scamell, Show Director, Home & Gift. Home and Gift Show Review - Top Forty Companies Playramas: Promoting Imaginative And Creative Play! Playramas are card play sets charmingly illustrated by award winning children’s book illustrator, Leo Hartas. Each Playrama contains a set of characters, props and background pieces ready cut out, with simple folding tabs to stand them up.

While a traditional idea, they are fresh and new to today’s parents and children, and grandparents will be delighted to find the toys of their childhood reappearing on the shelves. The first series is for children, with further series planned to appeal to adults and collectors. Parents love them because they fold flat, easy to store and bring out and entertain the children on journeys, play at the cafe, or just decorate a bedroom. They promote imaginative and creative play by providing delightful characters and scenes to populate an infinite variety of stories. Each Playrama is attractively packaged flat in a clear A5 bag with an header card to hang on standard display hooks. Unlike plastic play sets, they take up very little storage space, while being immediately eye-catching and attractive on display. All Playramas are designed, printed and made in England from recyclable materials. For more information on Leo and his work visit www.leohartas.com or visit www.playrama.co.uk

Ps-Jewellery: Unique And Bespoke Gemstone Jewellery Following a change in career, Pauline Snaith of Ps-Jewellery designs and creates jewellery that reflects her love of all gemstones. Only genuine gemstones are used and each piece is developed around the gemstone(s) chosen. These are selected for their cut, colour, size and shape to make something wonderful, from Amethyst to Ziron. Pauline believes passionately that jewellery reflects and can enhance the mood of the person wearing it, the outfit and occasion; this calls for bold statement pieces to delicate hand wiredwrapped drops of gems on silver chain. Women need a huge variety of pieces to cover all eventualities, even though we all have favourites that we return to, Ps-Jewellery can cater for all. Variety is the spice of life. All pieces are handmade using swarovski crystal, Japanese beads, silver, gold-plated silver and pewter to enhance the design, many of which are unique and bespoke. All pieces will be different because all gemstones vary, making each piece unique and organic. Inspiration for each piece come from life, influenced by fashion trends and designer themes, and like the Hummingbird, (the logo for Ps-Jewellery), that flits around flowers for food and shines jewel-like in the sun, the jewellery is vibrant and striking. Memorabilia Pack Co: Voted Top Grace’s Favours: Debut Success 40 Company at Harrogate! At Home and Gift Show! Making their debut at the Harrogate Gift Fair, the Memorabilia Pack Co certainly knows how to put on a good show, voted into the Top 40 show products at the first attempt.

They specialise in producing a range of nostalgic replica packs to supply to gift shops - packages stuffed with replica ephemera from bygone times. For example, the Home Front pack includes a ration book, leaflets, trade cards, booklets, etc. Rather than just display the products the company endeavoured to recreate a 1940s living room - quite a challenge in a 2 x 2 metre unit! This included a bakelite radio playing 1940s music, as well as flying ducks on the wall and wartime newspapers. “It’s really just a bit of fun to get the attention of gift shop buyers to stop and look at our products, and it seems to have worked” said Stuart Reid, co-owner of the Edinburgh based company. “It’s always gratifying to see people’s faces light up when they see our products for the first time. They are pleasantly surprised by the quality, price and also the fact they’re made in Britain.” For further information contact: Memorabilia Pack Co, 16 Forth Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3LH (0131-550 3799) www.mempackcompany.com / stuart@mempackcompany.com

Grace’s Favours was created in October 2011 by Simmi Duffin, who specialises in designing and hand crafting felt gifts, all of which are fully customisable. Home & Gift was the first Trade Show that Grace’s Favours had exhibited at and Simmi was delighted at the response to her products. Now supplying a number of gift shops and online boutiques with a fantastic mix of different merchandise, one of the most sought after ranges has been the VW Campervans and Beetles. The first of these was actually created as a joke for a friend and yet they have proved very popular and have been sent world wide. One exciting outcome of the orders placed at Home & Gift is that a whole new range of airplane gifts are being designed. Another new line, “Make Your Own” kits will soon be available, starting with “Sew Your Own Christmas Decorations”. For more information please visit: www.gracesfavours.co.uk

Botanical Britain: Picked, Pressed, Printed... Making a welcome return to Home & Gift 2013, Gillian Arnold is a celebrated artist and surface pattern designer. Originally from Carrickfergus, in Northern Ireland, Gillian uses her unique combination of hand-printing and painting techniques, which she has developed over the past twenty years, to create mono-print artwork and designs using actual cuttings of British wild-flowers. Using a vast colour palette, her work conveys the intricate detail of the plants with surreal and dreamlike qualities.

Gillian’s prints are then applied to her products, which include canvases and prints, aluminium jewellery, ceramics, lampshades, and cushions, all produced in-house in her Durham studio. Working this way, Gillian has the freedom to explore her craft whilst pushing the boundaries in how it can be applied. A striking example of this is her new aluminium jewellery range, with her designs applied to highly glossy, lacquered-looking metal with an almost 3D effect. For more information, or to place an order, please call Gillian on 07595 926 264 or email: mail@gillianarnold.com. Visit our website: www.gillianarnold.com.

Chalk offers contemporary, smart, woven fabrics, throws and cushions, made from 100% merino lambswool, and woven in the UK.

Kerry Stokes and Richard Bush set up Chalk in 2012. Kerry has a background in weave design and Richard has owned an interiors business, and represented weave designers in New York. To date there is a range of designs from geometrics to more organic, ombred forms. There are tonal greys and subtle shades as well as a bolder colour palette. Although relatively new to the market, Chalk already has customers around the world. The throws, which are approximately 145cm x 185cm, are £168. Buyers from key multiple retailers and top etailers including Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Fenwicks, House of Fraser, John Lewis, New Look, ASOS and Secret Sales joined independent buyers from the likes of the Dressing Room, Sunday Best, OKeefe,

& Hepburn said he had been impressed with the international buyers he had seen. “We have been pleasantly surprised to have had buyers from as far afield as Russia and China on the stand,” he commented.

Yard and Javelin at the August edition of Pure London, organised by i2i Events, this week.

Ahead of August’s show, Pure London announced significant investment from parent company i2i Events, which will see the show unveil a new vision for the brand from its February 2014 edition.

Those visiting the show were in an upbeat mood, with most buyers reporting that the recent spell of warm weather has led to increased sales, leaving them feeling positive about the SS14 season. Over 1000 brands across womenswear, young fashion, footwear and accessories presented their forward-order SS14 and shortorder AW13 collections at the three-day show which took place at London Olympia from August 4th-6th. Karen Cahn owner of contemporary womenswear boutique Sark in Kilmacolm praised this season. “The vibe of the show seems very fresh this year and I have seen some great new brands,” she said. Jade Thomson senior buyer at Manchester-based etailer The Hut Group added: “Pure is my favourite show. I come every season and there is always a great mix of womenswear brands.” While Elaine Bellenger owner of womenswear independent Monaco in Oxford commented: “I would sum up the show by saying it has a good vibe, it is on trend and presents good opportunities to visit existing suppliers and find new ones.” Brands exhibiting at the show were in a similarly positive mood, with several reporting that Pure London was their most successful show to date. Julie Rainer-Smeath of jewellery brand Belle and Flo said: “We have had a brilliant show. We have taken 60 orders already and 27 of those have been from new accounts. I have seen buyers from both large department stores as well as the key independents and it has far exceeded my expectations.” The level of international buyers at Pure London was significant this season with countries including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, China, the US and Hong Kong, all represented at the show. Chris Dolan managing director of womenswear brand Kelly

Following in-depth research with over 700 buyers, labels and brands, the future framework of the event will be based around the three most important elements buyers said they wanted from Pure London: a unique mix of labels and brands, authoritative insight into trends and an inspirational environment to showcase the best of European fashion. As part of this new vision for Pure London, the show will undergo a significant re-edit which will mark the beginning of a new era for the event. Buyers and brands at this week’s show were excited about the changes and said they were looking forward to hearing more about the organisers’ plans for the February edition. Deryane Tadd owner of award-winning indie The Dressing Room in St Albans said: “Pure London is an essential event in my buying calendar every season and I am always impressed with the show. I usually find new clothing and accessories brands and this season was no exception, placing several orders. “I am really excited about the plans for the show and I can’t wait to see what it looks like in February. I think re-editing the show will really help buyers to be more targeted and ensure they don’t miss new collections which could be really relevant for their business.” Brands were similarly excited about the plans. Tony Evans managing director of footwear supply business Jacobson Group, which owns footwear brands including Ravel and Babycham, said: “I will be interested to see what they do with the show, I think looking at the editing and giving it a refresh can only be a good thing.” Next Pure London - 9th-11th February, London Olympia

Age old textile techniques such as ikat, jamdani, shibori, kantha have been employed in a multitude of novel ways with a renewed sensitivity to fashion trends.

Two decades of dedicated work in the field of textiles, in developing, exploring, experimenting and innovating from the vast wealth available in India in terms of diverse skills, materials and references led RAGA DESIGNS to evolve its own unique brand of textiles and textile products. We have cleverly used the stitch resist dyeing technique of Shibori, originally a Japanese technique using natural fibre fabric like linen, silk & cotton, to create silhouettes with a minimalist approach. The use of natural vegetable and indigo dye colours lend themselves harmoniously to the technique and fabrics, the result thus obtained are organic and evocative. Monika Schneiter: ‘When I Design Patterns, The Sun Rises For Me’. Fluid, interlocking patterns provide give the wearer and viewers a journey into the land of colours and shapes. Sometimes it happens in an explosive fashion, then it is more restrained and delicate, or at a perfect angle. Precise in many ways – like garments made of high quality organic jersey cotton or handkerchiefs, silk scarves and shawls as well as neckerchiefs made of noble twill. “When I design patterns, the sun rises for me”, she says; and she dreams of additional projects such as designs for wallpaper and home accessories. *** KOKORO – the Japanese word for “heart” and the name of the collection SS14 of Monika Schneiter, lets one feel a taste of Japanese culture. The art of living, maintenance of inner harmony, understanding of nature and the deep connection between man and the universe. When cherry blossoms lend an air of enchantment to parks and avenues with their lush blooms, you know that spring has arrived in Japan. Tea fields lie in the sun in shades of green, everything awakens and fragrant scents fill the air. Everything breathes in and out. “Only he who can master his KOKORO can also master his life.” (Japanese saying)

KeenOn Fashion: Smarter Ordering Online

RUBERlab: Eco-Friendly Fashion...

Following a successful market launch in Germany the B2B-online-platform KeenOn Fashion now offers its services in the UK. The service was successfully launched at Pure Fashion Fair in London earlier this year. KeenOn Fashion is the World’s first fully transactional online B2B-portal. Both traders and fashion brands benefit from KeenOn Fashion: retailers can conveniently order their goods online, while brand suppliers enjoy a quick, inexpensive but highly and effective way to expand into new markets. KeenOn Fashion supports both sides in logistics and in settlement and payment processes. The B2B-portal features a wide range of mainly international brands and a private label in the women’s, men’s and kids wear sectors together with accessories, footwear and underwear, all of which are directly orderable. By using the B2B platform as standard for all ordering processes, retailers are relieved of many non-core activities and can thus focus fully on their core business. “The retailers fill their shelves and we take care of all the hassle” is how Morten Severon, Managing Director of KeenOn Fashion, sums the benefits for the fashion sector. Moda Show Review - Top Ten Companies BUYERS AND BRANDS MEAN BUSINESS AT MODA LINGERIE & SWIMWEAR!

The spring/summer edition of Moda Lingerie & Swimwear, the UK’s only dedicated intimate apparel and swimwear show, took place between 11-13 August at the NEC Birmingham and saw brands and buyers in a positive mood with many hailing the season as a turning point for the industry.

show as an important part of the calendar and we would exclude ourselves from the market instantly if we didn’t attend.”

With brands reporting a year-on-year increase in sales figures at the show, for many it has been one of the best season’s since the start of the recession. Peter Cronin, sales director for Panache said: “We wrote 20% more orders than the previous August. It’s the only exhibition we attend in the UK as this is where our customers come to finalise their season’s requirements and the mood across the show this August has been positively optimistic.”

Exhibiting in Moda Boutique, the area dedicated to designer and directional brands. Ben Mead, founder of the label said: “This is the best show we have done in Europe and it has been a perfect platform for making contact with many UK independent retailers. We have been helped by how fantastic the Boutique area looks, it has really drawn people in and buyers know exactly what they are getting when they come to us.”

French brand, Simone Pérèle joined big names from across the industry including Freya, Passionata and Gossard to name but a few, as it attended its first August show following demands from its client base. The move proved to be worthwhile as Carole Launchbury, the brand’s managing director explained: “The show was very good for us and exceeded our expectations for our first August show. Customers were requesting that we attended both shows and it has been a great move for us with buyers seeming more positive, excited and confident for the future, they really seem to want to buy into spring/summer 14.”

Also launching at this season’s show, DiaryDoll’s innovative period pants also had a successful first outing with the brands developers, TV presenter Carol Smilie and tennis star Annabel Croft attending the event to promote the brand. Carol Smilie said: “Diarydoll is our baby so we wanted to be here to promote it at our first ever trade show and the product has been incredibly well received. We have seen a good mix of buyers and we are both really enjoying the experience.” The product is manufactured by British company Headen & Quarmby who also presented the brands Ella & Me and Mary Portas’ Kinky Knickers for the first time at the show, both of which were also well received.

Both lingerie and swimwear benefited from the buoyant mood with David Lyons, head of UK sales for Roidal and Pill commenting: “Moda was excellent for the brands I represent especially Roidal Swimwear. From the people I know in the trade and speaking to visitors personally at the show, the mood across the industry seems to be the most upbeat it has been for the last 12 months. In terms of writing orders and gaining new accounts the success we have seen this season is a testament to effort Moda has gone to to bring the buyers to Birmingham. If every brand had the same conviction as we do that Moda is the place to be twice a year then the lingerie industry would be able to provide the service to buyers that they deserve.” Elsewhere, Brian Ashcroft of Fashy recognised the importance of the show as both a sales and marketing exercise: “We take a lot of orders at Moda but our main motivation for returning each sea son is to showcase our latest designs. We know that buyers see the

Moda Show Review - Top Ten Companies

A SHIRT FIRE THING! One of the many debuting brands success stories at last season’s Moda – the UK’s largest fashion trade exhibition – shirt specialist Ben Green is certainly a name to watch as it returned for the show’s spring/summer 2014 edition. Established in 2009, the German label stems from the FSH GmbH Group umbrella – a company created by Klaus Veer. Formerly a managing partner of Rawe Rheda, a fashion label within the Seidensticker Group, Veer had both the credentials and the knowledge to build a shirt label that has gone on to thrive in both domestic and international markets. With accounts in countries such as Germany, Greece, France, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Austria and the Middle East, it wasn’t long before the group looked across the waters to the UK menswear market. Following a number of seasons of dipping its toes into the UK market, it wasn’t until December 2012 that the brand decided to drive its presence further. Recognising the previous accomplishments of distributor David Alembick, following 41 years in the trade, the brand approached Alembick and, in just over nine months, has been reintroduced to both key independents and department stores across the country. In spite of its infancy, the label has now reached nearly 100 stockists in the UK and Irish market, including names such as the Fenwick Group, Barkers of North Allerton, Barbour of Dumfries, S.D. Kells in Northern Ireland and Clerys in Dublin among many more. “Many years ago, I established my company D’Alembi, which is

today is one of the biggest buyers and sellers of menswear clearance stock,” says Alembick. “It took something very special to convince me to diversify and become a sole distributor for Ben Green, but now I manage the whole of the UK, as well as Ireland and the Channel Islands, and I can’t believe the amazing response the brand has received in just over seven months.” Although Alembick’s reputation stood him in good stead, without a quality product he knew developing within the UK market at such a challenging trading time would have been all but impossible. “Ben Green only produces 100 per cent cotton shirts and, when I was first introduced to it, I was amazed at the quality for the price points,” says Alembick. “Both FSH and myself knew there wasn’t a better time to re-establish Ben Green in the UK market.” “I believe this is a big brand in the making,” he says without hesitation. “While obviously still maintaining the quality of the shirts, I’ve also added 100 per cent wool suits, both silk and microfibre ties, as well as tie, cuff link and hankie sets to the range. Moving into the new season, I’m looking to source other products to add to the Ben Green stable, so spring/summer 2014 is definitely an exciting time.” www.ben-green.de

We aim to generate a voice for creative talent, through our organisation of events and our interactive Mo Monthly newsletter and blog. Here at Shefali Couture I am inspired by Indian ethnicity. I have converted the “sari” into a modern wearable form for e.g. it can be worn as a skirt or a gown with stitched pleats and lining as well as the palao which may be an easy draped scarf -for the woman -on -the -go of today’s modern era where comfort conformity and ease of wear are the prime focus, not to forget affordability. I have also used the traditional nehru jackets/sharrara/lungis as inspirations for my collections.

My aim is to take culture into a more modern, globally accepted form, not only as a traditional garb, but can be worn at a Cannes film festival or a cocktail in New York. I believe in versatility, being able to take day into evening with minimum hassle, not to forget affordability. Silhouette and drape are prime, regardless of your age/body type or gender, what matters is how you feel about yourself and that can take you a long way. A sense of colour, style and poise are what matter, regardless of your cultural background. For more information please visit www.shefalicouture.com

Color-Code®: Bringing The Sunshine Into Your Lives!

The brand Color-Code® is a www.colorcodeboxers.com creation from Belgium from 2009. It is a registered brand & trademark of the company Abi Deco in Belgium. Since Belgium isn’t such a “Sunny” country, we got a little COLOR - CODE bored with all the grey-toned C OLO R- C OD E colors around us. We decided to create something fun, quirky and playful that would lighten up lives, put a smile on people’s faces when revealed – even if for a few moments and offer something that one would feel comfy in… and Color-Code® was born. Comfort is of utmost importance to us – so there is a special lining within for gentle support, which is a subtle & ingenious addition in 100% Organic Cotton (to ‘feel’ as close to and if possible to be ‘one’ with nature). Once you try our Boxers, you won’t want to take them off! Our Boxers are individually packed in special reusable & recyclable jars, because we do care about the earth. Each of our Boxers’ designs is special that change season after season, like a breath of fresh air and color your day. You can always see the latest happening designs on our website: www.colorcodeboxers.com and please do visit our Facebook page just to see what we are up to, ‘Like’ us and find our on-line shopping areas from there.

DIGEL: Distinguishable Colour Themes For Spring/Summer 2014 The main Digel collection, in addition to its fully developed range of readyto-wear clothing, also offers a wide range of casual wear. The underlying idea of the complete outfit is a type of engine driving a large part of the collection. Clearly distinguishable colour themes are on display in Spring/Summer 2014. KEY WEST is one of the collection themes, which is dominated by the intense interplay of sailing colours and clean, geometric colour contrasts, completed with nautical details. The second theme, CUBA CAFÉ, is focused on high-quality urban darkness, in which natural shades and summer darks have a role to play. The MOVE line, separate from the overall collection, will become an independent, stand-alone collection line under the DIGEL umbrella from Spring/Summer 2014, creating a clear demarcation from the rest of the collection. MOVE will take up and interpret new fashion themes. Minimised shapes and slim lines are key. Restrained splashes of colour are used in a targeted way. This creates a consistently modern and perfectly shaped look. The Spring/Summer collection is inspired by the metropolis of Miami, especially in terms of colour and graphic shapes. The interplay of smartness and relaxed formals creates a new, youthful collection called MOVE by DIGEL. Telephone: 00 49 7452 604 220 Website: www.digel.de

AUTUMN FAIR INTERNATIONAL

Autumn Fair International - Best Selected Exhibitors AUTUMN FAIR INTERNATIONAL 2013 OFFERED AN UNRIVALLED SEASONAL PRODUCT SHOWCASE TO UK RETAIL TRADE!

Autumn Fair International 2013, an i2i Events Group exhibition that took place on September 1 – 4 at The NEC Birmingham, welcomed over 1,500 exhibitors with 60,000 new launches and almost 30,000 retailers from 80 countries.

Visitors praised the enormous variety of new products on offer at this essential show, which is the prime seasonal sourcing event in the British retail calendar, second only to Spring Fair International in its size and reach. Independent retailer Ray Cambert was one of many who described Autumn Fair as an event that “you can’t afford to miss.”

As well as being the most important buying event of the season, Autumn Fair is renowned for offering a huge quantity of products that are on trend, in stock and ready for delivery. With the majority of independent retailers now buying little and often with specific occasions in mind, rather than forward planning 12 months ahead and bulk buying at the start of the year, the show has never been more relevant to the UK trade. While retailers were spoilt for choice on the show floor exhibitors also declared themselves pleased with the event. Paul Rylatt of Global Enterprises was one of the happiest, saying: “I’ve done business here before over the years but this is the best show we’ve ever done with a new product at Autumn Fair, the response has been tremendous. We have had overseas traders, independents, multiples, we’ve got signed contracts and orders from all kinds of retailers - I can probably sit back now and retire but I like the job too much!” New exhibitor Dennis Stougaard of Propaganda commented: “We had a record opening day beating Maison, NY Now and other international trade shows. Not only was it high volume it was also visitors / key buyers from major international stores. This was our first time exhibiting in the UK but definitely not the last”. 500 new exhibitors and 400 overseas suppliers joined a host of UK industry bellwethers across 11 different market sectors, including: Contemporary Gift & Home, Kitchen, Dining & Housewares, Gifts, Home Interiors & Furniture, Gift, Home & Volume and many more sectors.

SHOW REVIEW UK - OCTOBER/NOVEMBER

An expertly put together schedule of seminars and insight into future trends provided invaluable business advice to thousands of small and medium-sized companies, while some of the UK’s most influential retailers attended a series of briefings on the current retail environment hosted by the World Retail Congress.*

Those in attendance included senior buyers from Tesco and Harrods, with Selfridges, Marks & Spencer, Hamleys, Waitrose, Clinton Cards, Amazon, BHS, John Lewis, Debenhams, TK Maxx, The Cookshop, Fenwick and The V&A also visiting Autumn Fair.

One of the biggest stars of the show was retail and hospitality guru Alex Polizzi, star of Channel 5 TV programme the Hotel Inspector, who delivered inspirational advice to a packed audience on the opening day of the event. Alex was brought to the event by one of Autumn Fair’s key sponsors, nPower, which also hosted a large refreshment zone at the centre of Hall 5. npower’s SME sales and marketing director, Phil Scholes commented: “Autumn Fair International has provided us with an ideal opportunity to build on our knowledge of independent retailers and talk to them about their needs, so we can continue to develop the right products and services to support them”. Commenting at the end of the show, Autumn Fair Portfolio Director Nick Davison said: “I am very proud to have overseen my first Autumn Fair as Portfolio Director and pleased at the overall positive reception visitors gave to our fantastic exhibitors and insightful show content. This show is testament to both the resilience of the UK retail trade and more than 1,500 suppliers who’ve pulled out all the stops to put on such a superb showcase. I’m now looking forward to seeing their hot new products hitting the stores in time for Christmas and hope it turns out to be an excellent key trading season for all involved.” The next edition of Autumn Fair International will take place from September 7 – 10 2014 at The NEC, Birmingham, with the Volume Hall opening one day early. Salt Genie: Winner of the ‘Best Product’ Award Autumn Fair 2013! Innovation from Kitchen Concepts International limited.

Its inventor, Richard Hogg, saw a gap in the market, as with traditional salt-cellar and shakers you get fast flowing salt, relying on the user to judge the amount of salt being dispensed, and too much salt is not healthy and ruins the taste of your food. He also wanted to find a way of eliminating clogging in humid and damp conditions. Salt Genie is a unique new Shaker offering 2 benefits; dispenses salt with an even spread but not excessively, a healthier way to season your food and does not clog up. It’s ideal for use in the home, with food preparation and with meals. Ideal accessory to take outside taking on picnics, camping and boating as it does not clog up. Due to its versatility it will appeal to many and all ages. Practicable every day product and Ideal Gift. This trendy shaker is easy to use for all the family. One shake is enough to season your food. It comes in a clear body so it is easy to see when the Salt needs refilling. Easy to clean by rinsing under the tap or cleaning with a clean cloth.

Turnkey Domestic Ltd: Thermo Pot... Turnkey Domestic brought a new product to the Autumn Fair formally called a Water Boiler. This has been re-branded and is now known as the Turnkey Thermo Pot.

This portable, appliance keeps water at the chosen temperature after boiling. It is energy efficient due to the thermal outer layer, which also ensures that the Thermo Pot is never too hot to touch, making it ideal for the elderly. It is perfect for making tea and coffee at the 98° setting, and remains at this temperature using minimal electricity no matter how long the unit is in use. There is no lifting or pouring of boiling water so it is also suitable for those with mobility issues.

The low wattage used also makes the Thermo Pot suitable for portable use where the electricity supply does not support the boiling of a traditional kettle. The unit dispenses any amount of water required, so it has multiple uses apart from hot drinks. With a choice of 5 temperature settings and a self-clean cycle to minimise scaling, the Thermo Pot comes with a two year guarantee. There is no need to keep waiting for the kettle to boil.
