Welcome to the latest edition of Show Review UK. Hasn’t the weather been glorious?! Let’s hope it lasts this year, it’s seems to last a few weeks and then it’s gone - summer over. Whilst basking in the sunshine our team at Show Review UK have had their work cut out travelling the country attending various exhibitions to conduct our unique ‘Best Selected Exhibitor’ reviews. In our May/June edition you will be spoilt for choice with the selection of reviews we have featured for you. Starting off this edition of the magazine is kbb Birmingham. This event was full of outstanding exhibitors who launched various new products and showcased their best sellers to interior designers, architects and retailers. Our directors have singled out who they felt stood out at this years event. Following kbb Birmingham is Ecobuild. Based around sustainable design and energy efficiency, visitors of the show were treated to some of the most innovative products on the market. With an attendance of just under 45’000 it proved to be an event not to be missed. Next up is the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show incorporating the Home Improvement Show. This year our directors felt the event was busier then before... they were proven correct. With a 20% rise in attendance figures exhibitors felt confidence was returning to the self-build and renovating markets. Find out who we singled out as the best at the show this year! Later in the magazine we have our reviews on the National Convenience Show, Food & Drink Expo and the Farm Shop & Deli Show. All part of the same event at the NEC, Birmingham it proved to be a fantastic success for the organisers of the show and the exhibitors who showcased their products. kbb Birmingham - Best Selected Exhibitors KBB BIRMINGHAM REPORTS STRONG VISITOR NUMBERS! The 2014 edition of the show delivered buzz, mirrored buoyancy in the market and plenty of business all round. kbb Birmingham, organised by UBM Live Built Environment, closed its doors last Wednesday, surpassing already high expectations, following four days of first-class business, where high calibre retailers and contract buyers alike attended the eagerly awaited event from across the UK and internationally. With over 300 brands, the show proved an even bigger draw for its latest edition with representatives from across key multiple, independent retailers and contract buyers with John Lewis, Kitchens International, Diane Berry Kitchens, Magnet, Ikea, CP Hart, Bathstore, David Roger Associates, Antler Homes, Barratt, Redrow Group all in attendance. Matching this was an impressive audience of 13,766* key buyers who turned out in their droves to support the show and industry.

Positive feedback for the show has been overwhelming with many citing it as ‘refreshing’ and ‘full of optimism.’ Many were ‘excited’ by the prospects that arose from the show and went as far as to say ‘kbb is back in a big way.’ There was a definite air of excitement at the show, in part, down to the many orders being taken. Claire Surplice, Retail Chanel Manager, Ideal Standard “It was only the first hour of the show and we’d already had lots of orders, a very busy stand and people queuing up to see our reps.” Retailers from around the UK were thrilled with the quality and variety of brands exhibiting as well as the comprehensive features at the event, giving positive feedback on the latest edition of the show. Jayne Brown, Brown’s Leicester Ltd, Buyer said: “kbb Birmingham is essential for us to source new products, meet with suppliers and make new contacts. The features at this year’s show have been great!” Mark Ogden, Buying Manager, G2S commented: “It’s good to come to an event like this to see the brands, products and trends on display. It gives a great indication of what will be on its way in the next 12 months! The stands have all been really impressive and we have seen exactly what we were hoping to.” Exhibitors too reported a successful show with plenty of interest from quality retailers. Richard Proctor, JJO commented; “kbb is a great vehicle to bring products to the retailer. The audience has responded exceedingly well to our new ranges, and we’re on target to meet 1,000 people in 4 days. We’re a huge supporter of the retailer, and they deserve an event like this.”

Martin Ney of Samet added: “It’s our first time at kbb Birmingham and it’s been a very pleasing experience, we will definitely be back. The show is fast becoming one of the most important events on the European circuit.” Other show successes included the new and improved Innovation Awards in partnership with Blum, marking the most forward thinking products for visitors and exhibitors. Winner of the bedroom category was Daval with the Como fitted range with option i-design technology. In bathrooms, Wirquin and the Macdee motion universal siphon came out tops and in the kitchen category Cosentino won with Dekton ultra compact surfaces.

Simon Bodsworth, Marketing & Development Manager said of the win: “It’s incredible. We’re very proud that our hard work has been recognised after six years in the making. It makes us stand out to our customers, as they appreciate the innovation and understand it. Innovation is about moving the industry forward and tackling new challenges.” It’s clear to see that a thriving show was had by all, with over 15 hours of seminars from 17 industry experts covering everything from business, innovation, social media to the latest trends in a series of thought provoking talks and panel discussions, all given a seal of approval by interior guru, Linda Barker who was amongst attendance. Brand Director, Andrew Vaughan concluded, “This year’s kbb Birmingham has been an outstanding success and I am hugely proud of the team that helped to deliver such a fantastic show. Ecobuild Show - Best Selected Exhibitors OPTIMISM RETURNS TO GREEN CONSTRUCTION AS POLICY IS MADE AT ECOBUILD! This week saw renewed optimism for the green construction sector as Ecobuild experienced a three percent rise in visitors to London’s ExCeL, with 44,538 sustainable built environment professionals flocking to the world’s leading event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment. Further boosting confidence in the market, policy met practice at Ecobuild this year as Ed Davey MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change launched the government’s consultation on the future of the Energy Company Obligation.

towards the ISO 20121 standard for Sustainable Event Management. Currently awaiting the result, this standard will be testament to the organisers’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint by better management of resources and sourcing more sustainable options.

Focusing on making Britain’s homes warmer, greener, and cheaper to heat, the minister proposed a series of changes designed to reduce costs for suppliers and thereby reduce the impact on bills for millions of consumers. He also talked about improvements to the Green Deal finance plan and the target to upgrade one million homes.

Echoing this positivity, Greg Barker MP announced a £19 million boost for the Green Deal as it awarded funding for six community based retrofit programmes. He also stated that the Green Deal would receive a further boost, through the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive this spring.

Bird Brick Houses are permanent and the front is removable without the need to repoint as it only involves the removal of four stainless steel screws. The Downlight Attic Seal has been developed to be fitted over downlights which are situated in ceilings, to the loft/attic. A 20 per cent increase in visitor numbers at The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show and The Home Improvement Show this year put 500 companies from the self-build, renovation and home improvement markets in front of 32,353 keen home improvers and serious self-builders reinforcing the increasing demand for property advice and expertise in the marketplace. For the first time, the two shows joined forces at the NEC, Birmingham from 27-30 March, to extend the range and choice of companies showcasing their offerings within the renovating, interior, eco and self build industries and to enhance the consumer experience. The events also attracted five per cent more exhibitors who engaged with consumers to discuss their latest products and new technologies, resulting in 15 per cent of extended floor space. 75 per cent of companies have subsequently rebooked stands at future Homebuilding and Renovating events.

This year Centaur brought on board a new feature, the Energy Saving Home, which became the highlight exhibit at the shows. This offered consumers insight into the latest eco devices and Government schemes to help them save money and control their household energy consumption through sustainable living. In addition, The National Homebuilding and Renovating Show welcomed a new expert to the panel - Piers Taylor, award-winning RIBA architect and co-presenter of BBC2 series ‘The House that £100k Built’. He shared his knowledge on the importance of investing time and money in a renovation and how to choose the right companies for materials and finding a designer and an architect for a project. DOG LOVERS AND CELEBS DELIGHT IN BUMPER CRUFTS! Dog lovers flocked to the NEC in their hundreds of thousands last week as Crufts celebrated its joint biggest year, with almost 160,000 people coming to celebrate the British love affair with dogs. In total 159,536 people visited the show over the course of the four day event, whose principal sponsor is Eukanuba, closely matching the 2008 attendance figure. The gate was up seven percent on last year. Celebrities who dropped in to coo at the Cocker Spaniels and fawn over the Foxhounds included Homeland actor Damian Lewis; Harry Potter actress Helen McCrory; TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson; singer, actor and TV presenter John Barrowman; TV presenter and actress Amanda Holden, Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford MBE and Downtown Abbey star Lesley Nicol. A record number of people tuned in the watch the coverage across Channel 4 and More4 with a total of 4.6 million tuning in, compared to 1.8 million last year. Viewing figures peaked at 1.8million on Sunday night alone, as people watched Standard Poodle, Ricky be crowned as Best in Show and Cocker Spaniel, Molly be crowned as the UK’s top dog hero in the Friends for Life competition.

Additionally, 75,400 hours of watch-time was clocked up on the Crufts Youtube channel, with more than 48,000 watching the live internet stream. The Crufts Facebook page was hugely popular, delivering pictures, videos, news and comment throughout the show and now has over 133,000 likes, 366,000 fans and with almost 14 million views of Kennel Club social media posts throughout the event. Also on show were Betty Miller’s famous Big Biscuits, which were as popular as ever among the big breeds, and several of the smaller breeds were keen to try them too!

As the UK prepares to usher in the new National Curriculum, the Education Show 2014 provided the perfect platform for those seeking guidance and ideas to help with the change, with 9,734* people being inspired over the course of the show’s three days (20-22 March). Taking place at the Birmingham NEC in March, the Education Show 2014 was designed to offer education professionals more opportunities than ever to discuss and explore this time of unprecedented change, and what the adjustments to the National Curriculum, assessment, inspection and budgets mean for them.

workshops demonstrated how classroom technology can transform the learning process, providing top tips and practical examples. Supporting the rich programme of CPD was the show’s wide variety of more than 360 suppliers that showcased the latest teaching tools, classroom resources and management tools. On hand to answer any questions, visitors could speak with them, and get hands-on with products and services best suited to meet their individual needs.

The rich programme of development seminars, targeted conferences and advice clinics, complimented by the presence of leading education suppliers, attracted 4 per cent* more visitors than in 2013, and the show’s overall footfall was up 5 per cent*, with a total footfall of 10,302*.

Providing an ideal arena for school leaders to discuss and debate the issues most pressing for them was the School Leaders Summit. Designed as the result of intensive research with educators, attendees discussed topics including assessment, Ofsted inspections, funding and academy conversion. This popular programme of seminars, workshops and networking sessions saw 1,732* school leaders attend the show this year, up 18 per cent* on the Education Show 2013.

Dominic Savage, director general of the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA), commented: “So many people, exhibitors and visitors alike, were saying, the Education Show has really got its buzz back. The National Curriculum changes have refocused attention on the resources teachers need and, as we look forward, the changes to examinations and approaches to assessment are going to make the Education Show 2015 even livelier.”

To assist schools in meeting new requirements, the continuing professional development (CPD) offering at the Education Show also presented more than 120 best practice sessions led by practitioners and industry experts. National Convenience Show - Best Selected Exhibitors NATIONAL CONVENIENCE SHOW REVEALS BRIGHT FUTURE FOR CONVENIENCE SECTOR Attendees at this year’s National Convenience Show at Birmingham’s NEC demonstrated enthusiasm for the future of the convenience sector with exhibitors from FMCG giants, wholesalers and smaller start-ups demonstrating a wide range of innovative services and products aimed at giving c-store operators a head start in the increasingly fast-paced grocery sector. Taking place over three days (24-26 March 2014) the event, which was co-located with Farm Shop & Deli Show and Food and Drink Expo, attracted thousands of visitors, as well as more than 300 brands and suppliers which included Booker, Heineken, PayPoint and Unilever.

Dan Marsden, Retail Marketing & Support Manager at Booker Wholesale and an exhibitor at the event, said: “We found the NCS very worthwhile, it was the best stand we have ever had and we had lots of visitors. Feedback was very positive and it gave us a fantastic opportunity to highlight the Fresh range available from Booker’’ Attendees witnessed a full schedule of events thanks to Live@the Counter, a programme of talks and panel debates featuring some of the top names in the industry. Visitors could witness Craig Clarkson from Heineken discuss innovation in the alcohol sector; Caroline Thompson from Subway talk about the company’s experience in the lunchtime food sector, a panel date on chilled food, and many events besides. One highlight was Max Jenvey from Oxxygen Marketing, who hosted several sessions putting forward his argument that convenience retailers can increase revenue by opening cafes: “Food to go can deliver incremental footfall of 15% - and that’s a figure verified by both Him! and Mintel,” he said.

One of the biggest themes of the year was the changing face of cigarette retail. With a tobacco display ban due to hit c-stores in 2015, there was no shortage of exhibitors showcasing ideas to turn the challenge into an opportunity. In particular, dispenser specialists Servertab showcased a new machine, which kept cigarettes out of customers’ line of sight but allowed staff to access them easily.

Likewise, e-cigarette companies were out in force – as was legendary lighter brand Zippo, which encouraged retailers to increase revenue from the category by stocking pricier lighters. Speaking about the success of the National Convenience Show 2014, event director Jack Halliday said: “We feel that this was one of the best NCS events ever. The sector is extremely vibrant, and this definitely spilled over into the NEC – there was a great atmosphere throughout all three days. As a result, the advance bookings for next year have already been incredibly strong, so it’s looking positive for the National Convenience Show 2015.” Visitor Surjit KhunKhun, from Woodcross Convenience said: “We’re here to catch up with new suppliers, see what’s new on the horizon and find out about new things, and we’ve found it’s been great for that.” The next National Convenience Show will be held at the NEC, Birmingham from the 22nd to 24th April 2015.

Food & Drink Expo Incorporating The Farm Shop & Deli Show FOOD & DRINK EXPO, INCORPORATING FARM SHOP & DELI SHOW, CELEBRATES “MOST ENGAGING SHOW YET” Three days of innovation, inspiration and theatre combined to deliver the most compelling edition of Food & Drink Expo, incorporating Farm Shop & Deli Show, to date, confirming the show’s status as the number one route to the UK food and drink market. For two decades the show has provided a vibrant platform to showcase a mix of undiscovered brands and household names alike, as well as offering a meeting place for some of the brightest minds in the industry – and this year’s event proved no exception. More than 650 exhibitors converged at Birmingham’s NEC to provide visitors with a steady stream of edible innovation. Buyers and decision makers across the whole industry, from grocery, wholesale and speciality retail to foodservice and manufacturing, were spoilt for choice in terms of the quality and range of products on show. Emma Love from Mondelez International, one of the world’s largest snack companies, explains: “The breadth of categories on display was great. We went to discover the latest trends and companies that we’ve not heard of and you could see a real emphasis on health and natural come through in the products on display – there were lots of British foods too, which is always good. Novel branding and provenance were the key trends that stand out.” Exhibitors were equally positive about the benefits of the show for them. Philip Yau from Bonnie Yau commented: “We had three very busy days and it was definitely worthwhile. We saw familiar faces and existing customers – plus we have been approached by many new prospects. We also received enquiries from new industry sectors. The show has been positive for us – the quality of leads was invaluable.”

Channel 4’s Fabulous Baker Brothers made a hotly anticipated appearance. The dynamic duo offered insight and shared guidance on building a successful brand with advice specifically aimed at retailers. And if that wasn’t enough, there were also sessions by Ms Cupcake, cheese guru Juliet Harbutt and Allegra Foodservice as well as many more informative presentations. A Great New Idea The Great New Idea initiative returned to this year’s show to help pinpoint innovative thinking: visitors were invited to select their favourite ‘new idea’ from all the products and services showcased at Food & Drink Expo and Farm Shop & Deli Show. Nottingham-based Riverside Bakery’s gluten-free pastry range NO.G was crowned the winner of Food & Drink Expo’s Best New Idea. Sam Benjamin of Riverside Bakery said: “We’re delighted to win the award, which was voted for by visitors to the Expo. We had a fantastic response from people who visited us at the show. An increasing number of people can’t eat gluten and we wanted to give them back the British food they love, whether that’s a slow cooked beef pie or an indulgent chocolate tart. We spent over a year developing a special unique gluten free pastry that tastes wonderful.”

A wealth of opportunity

At the Farm Shop & Deli Show the Best New Idea title was scooped by Yorkshire-based Fine Cheeses Ltd for its highly innovative Charcoal Cheese. The cheese is the first and only all-black cheese, made by blending creamy mature Cheddar with charcoal.

There was a real buzz about both Food & Drink Expo and Farm Shop & Deli Show this year. The aisles were alive with visitors hungry for both samples and for new business ventures. We were inundated by exhibitors keen to show off their latest innovations and the winners were just two examples of the fantastic products on display at the show.”

There was an overall sense of achievement amongst exhibitors and visitors were highly impressed with the brands they had discovered. Networking was also a constant throughout the show, with new business relationships being formed every few minutes. Leanne Crowther from Merangz said of the atmosphere at the show: “There was a very positive vibe with lots of real interest from genuine customers, and it provided a fantastic opportunity to do business and network. It has become a show that is important for us to exhibit at.”

Feeding hungry minds Visitors and exhibitors were also treated to masterclasses, interviews, panel debates and product demonstrations by some of the industry’s most sought after names in the Brainfood Factory and Farm Shop & Deli Live seminar theatres. Attendees listened as industry experts delved deeper into the industry’s most talked about topics, learning how retailers and manufacturers play a key role in tackling obesity and malnutrition, as well as just how far we still need to go before we can officially say we’ve tackled the problem of food waste.

The excitement around the next exhibition is starting to build with many companies already booking their stands. Event Director Jack Halliday is confident that William Reed Business Media, the organisers of the show, will be able to continue to provide fresh content and attract exciting exhibitors to ensure visitors are compelled to return.
