Grand Designs Live - Best Selected Exhibitors GRAND DESIGNS LIVE RETURNS TO BIRMINGHAM WITH A BANG!
As the eighth Grand Designs Live Birmingham closed its doors at the NEC once again, we celebrated its most successful show to date. As excited visitors gathered to enter the 2013 event, show host Kevin McCloud was on hand to greet their arrival, before cutting the ribbon and declaring the 2013 show officially open. Visitors arrived early, eager to get home ideas, inspiration and advice from the show’s experts, which this year included Kevin McCloud, George Clarke, Jo Hamilton, James Alexander-Sinclair and Charlie Luxton, amongst others, who hosted a series of talks and workshops, live from the Grand Theatre.
Some of this year’s key highlights included.... The launch of the Eco Tech House in partnership with Smooth Radio, boasting four rooms to demonstrate that it is possible to stay eco-friendly without compromising on quality. The winner of the Garden Designer of the Year Award was selected during a live judging event, with Kevin McCloud and James Alexander-Sinclair presenting the award to Ann Liz Ackerley for her stunning ‘Gourmet Retreat Garden’. Kevin McCloud’s Green Heroes, sponsored by Solar Slate, returned to showcase the best in green product design. The Live Kitchen Experience sponsored by Miele, which offered live demonstrations by top culinary chefs.
Visitors also picked up ideas an inspirations from interior experts at the Grand Interiors Theatre including design guru Jo Hamilton. Back by popular demand, Ask An Expert sponsored by VELUX, returned to NEC offering visitors free 30 minute consultations on all aspects of a build, renovation or development with a range of experts.
We also announced the winner of brand new initiative Self-Build on a Shoestring which challenged people to design a ‘self-build friendly’ home for less than £50,000, with the prize going to architect Ed Green - an associate with Cardiff based Pentan Partnership, for his innovative, low-cost agricultural barn structure titled, ‘BARNHAUS’. This years show was bigger and better than ever before taking over two halls to house more Grand Build stands along with Food and Housewares and a new food feature called Market Lane. Grand Designs Live NEC was a fantastic success and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to London ExCeL from the 3rd - 11th May 2014.

The World of Learning Conference & Exhibition, which took place 1 and 2 October at Birmingham’s NEC, showcased a host of industry-leading experts who passed on useful guidance for visitors to take away and apply in their own jobs. World-renowned experts delivered insightful seminars during the two day conference which proved to be a hit with the audiences as David Collins, Service Owner at The Defence Centre of Training Support, explains: “What an eye-opening experience! I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with the conference speakers after their sessions.”
Visitors packed into the conference hall to listen to a wide range of hot topics ranging from the future of L&D and tomorrow’s technology; delivering value and L&D’s strategic role in transforming the business; through to talent management and cultivating leaders to deliver future growth and success. The conference was chaired by Reeta Chakrabarti, the BBC’s Education and Social Affairs Correspondent, a renowned broadcaster whose career includes several years reporting politics from Westminster. Alongside the conference was the exhibition which included a new series of fringe seminars, designed for those who work or collaborate with L&D decision makers, from sales directors to heads of customer service and line managers, to newcomers in the L&D profession. INVESTORS FIND MANY LEADING AND NEW BRANDS AT THE NATIONAL FRANCHISE EXHIBITION. “It’s been very good. I’ve found out everything I wanted to know about the opportunities I was interested in. I’m also much more informed about finance and business plans from the excellent seminars.” So says Kathy Creek from Grimsby of her visit to The National Franchise Exhibition to the NEC Birmingham. She, like many thousands of other visitors, found it to be the perfect source of answers about franchising. With around 140 exhibitors, a comprehensive seminar programme and a host of free features, the exhibition offered everything they needed under one roof. Many people took advantage of the opportunity to meet with a wide variety of exhibitors covering sectors from food and drink, home improvement, leisure and property. With McDonalds, Steak’n Shake, Papa John’s, Dream Doors, Leisure Leagues, Surelet and Auditel among the companies featured, there were exciting opportunities to suit virtually every interest, budget or skill. Banks, lawyers and careers consultants were all also on hand to provide important advice. Jackie Mahon, an accountant from Harrogate said: “It’s much easier to talk to franchisors when you meet them face to face.”
The extensive free seminar programme proved especially popular with packed audiences filling the theatres to gain advice from the experts. The British Franchise Association (bfa) delivered a series of talks over the two days of the event, providing impartial and practical guidance on all aspects of franchising. Matt Roberts, co-founder of Bean2Bed, and Nathan Littleton of Future Vision, the keynote speakers in the Growing Your Own Business Conference gave valuable insight into how to succeed in business even at a young age. Tim Horne, a healthcare worker based in Evesham said: “The seminars were very good, both the general information ones and those given by some of the franchisors. Anthony Kishore, a banker from Leamington Spa found the Real Franchisee Stories particularly encouraging. “They give a good idea of what it is really like and show ordinary people who have been successful.” Giving an exhibitor’s perspective, Shaneen McEvoy, marketing and

The National Wedding Show closed another successful season with a phenomenal 29,357* visitors attending its two autumn shows held at London’s Earls Court from September 27-29 and the NEC Birmingham from October 4-6. wedding exhibition of the season and the reason that they return year after year. Dave Shaw of menswear brand Moss Bros said; “This has been an absolutely cracking show; we have hit all our targets and exceeded our data capture target. I have found that 2015 weddings are the most popular and the most popular colours are a grey suit, sage green accessories as well as Cadbury purple and coral. The catwalk looked great and I really like how they modelled our suits. This is by far the best show I have worked at; the visitors are great quality and are really happy to spend a lot of money. There were lots of big groups buying together this year and lots of people were interested in our Ted Baker collection.” Now in its 22nd year, The National Wedding Show remains the nation’s largest and most established wedding show. The Baby Show, the UK’s number one pregnancy and parenting event returned to its birthplace, London Olympia, from 25 to 27 October 2013, and what a success it was. Over 300 specialist exhibitors from high street brands to independent boutiques alike showcased an amazing variety of products and services, which was well received by the West London and Home County audience. The Show welcomed an incredible 20,562 visitors through its doors. Following the Royal Christening of Prince George on 24 October, 2013, visitors and exhibitors alike were of high spirits, with a huge media focus on christening gifts and toys fit for a king or queen.

This was the first time we had attended the Independent Hotel Show and we are pleased we did, as it created a lot of interest in our services. Cake International & Crafts For Christmas - Best Selected Exhibitors SWEET SUCCESS: CAKE INTERNATIONAL AND CRAFTS FOR CHRISTMAS DRAW RECORD VISITOR NUMBERS! ICHF Events saw record visitor numbers flock to its NEC shows at the weekend. Cake International – The Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating & Baking Show and Crafts for Christmas, Hobbycrafts and Art Materials Live drew at total of more than 65,000 visitors. Cake International – The Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating & Baking Show is the largest show of its kind in the world, having celebrated its 20th birthday at the NEC where Mary Berry and Mich Turner appeared as celebrity guests. This flagship show saw 25,000 visitors attend the three-day event, a 25% increase on last year, with advance tickets for Saturday selling out for the third year running. Cake International has continued to grow year-on-year expanding to two new venues over the past two years with shows at EventCity, Manchester and ExCeL, London.
Troy Bennett, director at ICHF Events said: “In recent years we have seen a substantial increase in visitor numbers as well as exhibitors to Cake International, reflecting the growth of the baking and cake decorating industry as a whole. The show at the NEC has doubled in size in the last two years alone and this year we received our largest amount of competition entries ever. We are looking forward to continuing to expand the show, making it even better for future years.” The show received over 1,000 competition entries, a 65% increase on last year, making this the largest showcase of its kind in the world. Popular creations included an almost life-sized Johnny Depp cake dressed as Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean, which was the work of Lara Clarke, an amateur baker from Brownhills, West Midlands. The highly coveted ‘Best in Show’ award went to Rose Macefield for her fishing themed cake, which featured a fishing basket, rod, net and trout. Rose said: “I have been entering Cake International competitions since 2009 and have won gold and silver awards before but I never dreamt I would win the Best in Show, especially with such a high calibre of entries this year. I wanted to make a cake based on a popular hobby and wanted it to be life-sized. It took over 70 hours to make but I am thrilled that the hard work paid off – I am still in shock!”
Cake International ran alongside Crafts for Christmas, Hobbycrafts and Art Materials Live, which attracted over 40,000 craft fans throughout the four-day event. Offering three shows for the price of one, there was a wide range of crafts, demonstrations and advice from over 450 exhibitors.
Troy Bennett continued: “Crafts for Christmas, Hobbycrafts and Art Materials Live has been running for 27 years and continues to grow year-on-year. Which Craft UK: Best Selected Exhibitor 2013! Which Craft? Doncaster was founded in 1996 by Paula Walters. Initially delivering workshops in the community. Her idea was that all the materials and equipment would be provided and crafters were recruited to come along, make cards and pay a fee. This proved to be very popular and several groups were started around the Doncaster area.
Things moved swiftly and before long a small barrow in the centre of town was rented and Paula would make hand made cards, organise workshops and sell craft materials from the barrow. The workshops were again very popular and larger premises were required. Which Craft soon started to exhibit at various paper craft shows - this was to publicise the business and promote the workshops. In 1994 Paula organised the first Stamp Magic Paper Craft show at The Dome in Doncaster and today it is still going strong, held twice a year in June and October the show has a good reputation in the crafting industry and is always well attended.
