Editor’s Comment Welcome to the latest edition of Show Review UK. It is half way through the year... and hasn’t it flown by so far! The weather seems to be so much better than last year which is great. We are just hoping it will last! In this issue of the magazine you will find a range of fantastic reviews on exhibitions that have taken place across the UK. We have our Top Thirty Companies appearing in the magazine from the Pulse Show. There was a great range of exhibitors showcasing their products at the show this year which made our job extra difficult. Pulse Show Review - Top Thirty Companies RECORD INTERNATIONAL VISITOR NUMBERS, HIGH CALIBRE BUYERS AND KEY PRESS ATTENDEES REAFFIRM PULSE AS BRITAIN’S LEADING COMMERCIAL AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN-LED RETAIL SHOW Pulse, the UK’s only summer trade show for gifts and interiors, took place from the 12-14 May 2013 in Earls Court, drawing an impressive calibre of buyers to the 11th edition on the show. With more design-led product than ever before and the participation of over 180 up and coming designers in Launchpad, Pulse has positioned itself on the map as the go-to trade show for retailers looking to discover upcoming trends, product launches and exclusive exhibitors. The visitor figures demonstrated a marginal decrease of 4%, which is indicative of the current market conditions and a sign of cautious retailers after a tough April following an early Easter.

Showcasing effortless shapes combined with stunning designs, this is the first collection from young designer Becky Sampson, and the first range for the effervescent Sampson & Christie brand. The use of contrasting colours and sensuous designs mark the Phoenix collection as something different, and Ms Sampson as a designer to watch. Becky’s love of fashion, and knowledge of the finest quality materials and craftsmanship was honed during her time at Northampton University, and has inspired her to establish her own company. The Japanese inspired floral pattern of the Phoenix collection was influenced by Becky’s time in Tokyo, and embraces the beauty of the culture and its natural surroundings. Using supple leather and exquisite fittings, Becky was driven by a desire to create accessories that are both durable and appealing. Erika Braccini: ‘Wonders’ First Collection Showcased At Pulse Wonders is a new concept developed by designer-maker Erika Braccini. The first collection has been showcased at Pulse 2013 in London on the Launchpad area.
Wonders is a brand that uses waste from PVC advertising banners to create attractive textile fabrics. It is made by using the colourful discarded banners as the thread, which is woven into a versatile fabric that is currently being used for cushions. The peculiarity of this fabric is that it is entirely hand woven with natural and carefully sourced materials. All aspects of creating Wonders, from materials to a production process, are environmentally friendly. Erika Braccini is currently half way through her second year at Camberwell College of Arts where she is studying threedimensional design. Her interests revolve mainly around sustainable design and finding new ways of reusing existing materials. She believes that this way of designing can potentially be a new form of activism as, although hidden and indirect, it focuses on using eco-friendly or reused materials. Harriet Sanders: Luxury British Made Leather Handbags Luxury handbag designer Harriet Sanders established herself four years ago upon graduating from the London College of Fashion. Her successes included a collaboration with the ASOS Ltd 100 collection in 2009 - her bags sold out in minutes. Following this she obtained the Highly Commended Best Fashion Accessory 2012 Awarded by Attire Accessories Magazine; for her very vintage Dicky Bow Clutch – using recycled Bow ties, each bag remains completely unique. Harriet’s success in the UK has now carried its way over to Japan.
Aged only 25 years young, Harriet’s designs reflect her youth, as well as her love for vintage styles. Designs such as, ‘The Classic’ and ‘The Messenger’ demonstrate a feminine modernising on old school styles, all of the designs stem from a belief in colour, simplicity and detail. Each handbag is designed and made in her London based studio using ethically sourced Italian leather. Ansari Boutique: Vintage Inspired Boutique Chic!
My name is David Worsley and I am a potter making wheel-thrown ceramic tableware. I am striving to create simple, special pots of formal beauty that with daily use enhance and enrich people’s lives.
Established 1950, Ansari Boutique is an independent retailer and based in the centre of Oxford. Specialising in women’s fashion and homeware, Ansari are renowned for the diverse collection of products which represent the best of vintage inspired boutique chic.
My pots are at the functional end of ceramics, thinly thrown with clean lines and elegant forms. My aim is to marry beauty with function to create a pot that is a pleasure to use. The pots are made by hand and wear that quality openly; the decoration all comes directly out of the process of the making. The pots are thrown using a white stoneware clay. The range comprises three colours, black, blue and ‘old white’, with each colour ‘breaking’ across the surface of the pots to give a richness and depth. I am influenced by potters who look to the east for inspiration - I love the quietness and simplicity of this type of pottery. I am based in Shipley, West Yorkshire. myBearHands: Lovingly Lara Sparks Embroidery: Handmade From Start To Finish! Inspired By ‘Quirky Britain’ myBearHands is a handmade, illustration based jewellery company run by Sally Haysom. Designed around her own illustrations, each piece is lovingly handmade from start to finish from her studio in Bristol, England. Having grown up in a creative family in the Devon countryside, Sally attributes her passion for nature and narrative to a childhood of woodland walks and a shelf full of story books when she got home! A degree in Illustration from the seaside town of Falmouth helped her along the way, and finally a desire to combine her passion for drawing with a love of making inspired her to set up myBearHands. Sally hopes that the animals and characters who populate her jewellery may inspire the recollection or invention of narratives in the wearer. She is also a strong believer that illustration and art should not be confined to galleries or walls, and hopes myBearHands embodies this value.
I graduated from Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1990, having studied a Degree in Fashion/ textiles, specialising in free-hand machine embroidery.
My passion has always been embroidery and I have been lucky enough to have stayed designing and producing on my sewing machine for the last 22 years. I have always wanted to produce my own embroidered collection and so four years ago, I decided that the time was right for me to make the transition. As I still loved producing embroideries, I felt ready to start evolving my own ideas as a new business. I now produce my own cushions and more recently, lampshades, which are either embroidered or hand screen printed from my original embroidery.
Most of all she hopes people will find something in her work to inspire and enjoy.
My inspirations are ‘quirky Britain’ and all things that make Britain beautiful! ‘British Bloomers’ is my fun cushion depicting some of our favourite knickers! With the gloomy financial environment of recent years, it’s time to put back the humour and give us some retail therapy with a smile!

Katie Leamon is a luxury card & stationery brand designed and made in England.
Sally Nencini set up her business in 2009 designing and making machine-knitted lambswool toys, blankets and cushions for the home.
It encompasses a love of typography, stationery and vintage curiosities, aiming to deliver beautiful, tangible designs that evoke a sense of nostalgia.
Originally from County Armagh, Northern Ireland she is now based in London. Sally studied MA Fashion at the Royal College of Art and has over 10 years experience designing for labels including Levi’s and M&S.
The brand came to life in 2010 with a collection of hand printed cards, which later formed the foundations of the brand and remain a signature style and much loved choice for many of their buyers. Her love of vintage toys - especially the imagery and colours of early Galt and Abbatt wooden puzzles and picture card games show as a predominant influence in her work. MONA MARA: ‘We All Have A Story To Tell...’ Mona Mara, like any other girl, searches to be true to herself. Inspired by so much that surrounds her she often finds herself spending hours exploring the diverse creative offerings of her city, London. Yas-Ming Ceramics is a collaboration between Yasmin Dilekkaya and Ming Wai Sun. The pair have been working together since they graduated from an Applied Arts degree. Yas-Ming Ceramics was founded with the aim to produce fun and functional products. The work originally stemmed from mixing their individual practices together. Since then the work has evolved and developed with new product lines added.
The main process used is slip casting, but press moulding and hand building techniques are also used. Moulds are made and then used to slip cast the animals, cups, bowls and dishes. The animals are then carefully joined to the cups by hand. Exhibiting at Pulse 2013 was Yas-Ming Ceramics’ third time in Launchpad and they had the opportunity to launch new products and create new links with a variety of businesses. NAIDEX NATIONAL 2013 IS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS! Naidex National has been heralded as a success with more than 10,000 visitors attending the three day event at the NEC, Birmingham from 30 April to 2 May.
The UK’s largest event focused on disability, homecare and rehabilitation closed its doors following a packed programme of seminars, networking and product launches. Some 300 exhibitors and the biggest speaker programme in the show’s 37-year history drew visitor numbers beyond the expectations of show organiser i2i Events Group. Innovation for independence is the aim behind a new invention launched by a Wistow company. Medi-popper Limited is a home-based concern set up by entrepreneur Andrew Donovan to sell medi-popper – a device enabling those with limited dexterity to access tablets easily from tricky foil packaging. The device was invented by David Anderson – a retired army major from Lincolnshire who suffers from Parkinsons Disease and who takes up to 120 tablets per week – as he found his condition prevented him from breaking the foil seal on his tablets easily. Mr Donovan said: “David had a prototype device which would allow those with not so nimble fingers to get their tablets in foil blister packs quickly and easily. “The first invention was large and metal and not practical for everyday usage. But with help from Lincoln University in Leicester and backing from Midlands development association Medilink, the device was refined. “The final device has a round disc attached with three different apertures corresponding to different pill sizes. A small lever, easily manipulated, pushes out the tablet into a tray without the need for huge force.” The device will retail at £12.50 with 50p from each sale going to support and research charity Parkinson’s UK. The Sequal Trust is a national charity which fundraises to provide communication aids for disabled people, of all ages, throughout the U.K, with speech, movement or severe learning difficulties. These disabilities include Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy, Stroke, Cancer to name but a few. Sequal aims to provide speech aids to those people who cannot afford to purchase such very vital equipment, to allow them to lead more independent lives and especially when Local Health Authorities are unable to help. The devices required are many and varied, ranging from computer or laptop systems up to digitised/synthesised speech aids, page-turners or Eye scanners, at costs of up to £12,000.
