According to the Be Real Campaign, in co-operation with Dove, 88% of adults do not feel confident with their body. Be it cultural differences, the fashion industry, or the absence of simple nudity in society which has caused such discomfort among us,
the human body should be seen as a work of
art. The most complex
invention of all.
Sue Tilley, plus size nude model and the muse of Lucian Freud’s painting (name) reveals all, to us, and in a painting worth £17.2 million. “I was still mortified when I got there and he told me to take my clothes off.” The idea of revealing your curves, edges, hairless, or blemished skin to a world so critical, can be terrifying. Sue admitted she was nervous but “Figured it was just like going to the doctors, and that hardly anyone was perfect.” Sue Tilley was endearing and impressionable in her approach to nudity, her light hearted, easy-going character was admirable and I think we could all learn a lesson from ‘Big Sue.’ It is bizarre why such a marvellous creation is not celebrated daily. Across the world, opinions and morals are challenged daily arguing what body parts should or shouldn’t be exposed. In Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia women are required to wear the Burqa or Niqab which covers their entire body, even their eyes. In South East Asia it is disrespectful for women to expose their chest, shoulders and toes. These dress codes seem absurd to the nudists who roam freely on Black’s beach, California.
Is it any wonder that there is certain plethora discussing nudity in a world so obsessed with right and wrong?

Lina Esco, director of the ‘Free the Nipple’ campaign questions ‘Why can you sell guns on Instagram, but yet they will suspend your account for posting the most natural part of a woman’s body?’ Is covering our bodies something we’ve been taught to do? Activist for women’s rights, author and anthropologist Margaret Mead, found that if children have a natural exposure to nakedness from a young age they are more likely to have a relaxed approach to nudity in later life. Fashion model Kristen, who has appeared naked in Game of Thrones spoke openly about feeling confident with her body. When growing up, Kristen was exposed to natural nudity, admitting that she has seen her parents naked regularly at home. If a child is insecure about simply seeing an undressed being, it will be a challenge to accept, feel comfortable, and love their body as they grow up. However Sue Tilley suggests, we should all “Just accept what you are.”
Isn’t the naked truth, stripped bare, that just like those around you, we are all the same?.

From the back of the closet, there appears to be a light, as Alice-Azania Jarvis from the London Evening Standard describes 2014 as the year to live nakedly. The fashion industry seem to have ditched the fashion this year, perhaps they have taken inspiration from designer Alexander McQueen who suggested that “There is no better designer than nature.” Both Burberry’s ‘The Birds and the Bees’ and Christopher Kane’s S/ S15 collection used sheer transparent blouses exposing nipples, thighs and a lot of cheek on models including Jourdan Dunn and Suki Waterhouse. Could the nipple be the new accessory for Spring/Summer 2015? Model Cara Delevingne obviously agrees, as she was spotted in February wearing a ‘Free the nipple’ t-shirt. The campaign is a protest against the nudity laws in the US, where it is illegal in 35 states for women to appear topless; but fine for men.
