Useful language Important things about your stay During your stay, you will be provided with 50€ for boarding each week. Also, we have a certain amount of money for the social program, e.g. to go to other cities, like Berlin, Dresden or Hamburg, to visit sights, and the like. If you tell us which places you would like to visit, we can arrange trips with the other Incomings, but you can travel on your own as well of course. Moreover, we try to provide some mobile phones and bicycles for our Incomings. Unfortunately, depending on how many Incomings we have each month, the phones and bikes we have may not be enough for everyone to get one. For the bicycles we need 25€ as a deposit, from which you will get back 20€ when returning the bike, the rest is for maintenance. For the phones, the deposit is 5€, which we will return to you at the end of your stay as well. For the phones you can get cheap prepaidcards here which you can charge by yourself, and if you need help with this just ask us. We will also try to organize regular gettogethers during your stay, for example cookingnights, going to bars together or having a barbecue if the weather is appropriate.

5 German Culture What do you think of when you hear the word “German”? Maybe you think of Prussian virtues like Punctuality, Diligence, Sense of duty. Maybe you think of “the Krauts”: Keyword Oktoberfest with dirndl dress, sauerkraut and yodeling. Maybe you think of fascism. However, hopefully you don’t reduce us to any of those prejudices! It’s true that punctuality is important in Germany and of course you should always be on time at your workplace. Also, when meeting up with friends, eight o'clock usually means eight o'clock, not half past eight. To the Oktoberfest, which is very famous all over the world, six to seven million visitors are attracted to every year. But this is only a special event in Bavaria – not every German is dressed like this all the time! ;) And there are also other important festivities, such as the Carnival in spring or on the 11th November, New Year’s Eve celebration and Christmas. Apart from that, we hope that Magdeburg will welcome you with open arms. There are many students from foreign countries here and we are happy about each of you. Here is some advice to cope well with Germans: Don’t expect them to be too friendly. You may find them in a grumpy mood, even the shopkeepers, but eventually you will get used to it. They don’t mean it. Don’t ask women of more than approximately 20 years for their age. Never ask anyone about their weight. Saying "Gesundheit!" after one sneezes is a polite way of wishing them well. Most Germans learn English in school, but especially the elderly may not be used to it and everyone will be pleased if you try to learn some German. It’s definitely worth a try! ;)

8 Shopping For groceries you could look for ALDI, LIDL, NETTO or PENNY these are our food discounters with studentfriendly prices, while REWE and EDEKA are slightly more expensive. One of the mentioned will definitely be near your flat. Opening hours are generally from 7 or 8am to 8pm on weekdays and from 8am to 4pm on Saturdays. On Sundays the shops are generally closed. Although there are two big shopping centers, the AlleeCenter and the City Carré (Look at the map provided), Magdeburg actually lacks big shopping streets in downtown in comparison to other German cities. Nevertheless, there are also small, lowbudget shops along the Breiter Weg, as well as some more expensive boutiques. Almost all stores accept debit cards and all shops accept cash. Important to know are opening times of shops. Generally, most shops are open from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 8 pm. On Saturdays most shops close early around 2 pm and are closed on Sundays and on public holidays. That is why we have socalled “Late shops” (“Spätis”), which are open longer, where you can buy alcohol during the night. They can be found here: Go In, Leipziger Straße 48 (14:00 22:00) Der Shop am Hassel, Hallesche Str. 4 (12:00 0:00) Magdeburger Spätshop, Halberstädter Straße 70 (15:00 2:00) Magdeburger Spätshop, Arndtstraße 36 (15:00 – 2:00) 24h NP, Jakobstraße 13 (open from Monday 7:00 to Saturday 20:00) And don’t forget that the internet is always helpful if you need to find out where the nearest shop in your neighbourhood is and when it is open.

This is the Adolf MittagSee Located in the RotehornPark on the island in the river Elbe

9 Public Holidays Here is a list of the holidays we have. Note that on these days the shops are generally closed: New Year 01.01. Epiphany 06.01. Good Friday variable Easter Monday variable Easter Sunday variable May Day 01.05. Ascension variable Whit Monday variable German Unity Day (National Day) 03.10. Reformation Day 31.10. 10 In and outside Magdeburg

Grüne Zitadelle Breiter Weg

In case you've got some time left and are wondering how to spend your afternoon or your weekend, you might try and enjoy the awesome sights of Magdeburg! Among other things, there are many beautiful old churches to visit. For example the Magdeburger Dom or the “Kloster unserer lieben Frauen”, which is a museum of fine arts as well. Or you could visit the “Grüne Zitadelle”, a wonderful and inspiring work of the famous architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Or maybe you are a sportive person? Then try one of our many parks such as the “Rotehornpark” in sight of the river Elbe, the “Nordpark” for jogging and exercise and the “Elbauenpark” with the millennium tower and the climbing park, or simply have a break in the green lungs of our city. In the summer you might also enjoy having a barbecue here – we can tell you Millenium Tower the best places for this ;) Elbauenpark If you prefer indoor fitness activities, you could go to one of the McFits, or especially for women: Fitness class women. Try the Sportpark where you can participate in various sports such as Bowling, Tennis, Squash, Badminton, sauna for relaxing and even more. Moreover, Magdeburg offers you several swimming pools and open air pools. The Nautica is for fun and sauna, whereas the “Elbeschwimmhalle” and the Dynamo bath are for those with sportive ambitions.

11 In and outside Magdeburg Magdeburg also has a variety of different lakes where you can enjoy the landscape, go swimming in the summer and play beach volleyball. We have for example the Neustädter, the Barleber and the Salbker Lake. The zoo here in Magdeburg is also quite amazing it's always worth a visit. If you have some more time, e.g. on the weekend, you could organise a trip to the Harz or to the beautiful old cities Wernigerode and Quedlinburg. If you’re lucky, during the Walpurgisnight on the 30th April once a year, you might even spot some witches dancing on the Brocken. Now you know what you could do when you need a break of all the work and stress you might have. ;) Enjoy your time in this terrific city!
