Willkommen in Erlangen! Welcome to Erlangen!

Dear student, we are very happy to inform you that we have been able to arrange a medical clerkship for you in one of our teaching hospitals at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen. Erlangen is a university city in nothern bavaria (or as some would say: southern germany ;-) ). It's well known for medical engineering and health sciences since it's the headquarter of the Siemens concern and with 23.000 employees its biggest facility worldwide (basically everyone here either works for Siemens or the university. We are already looking forward to seeing you in Erlangen, getting to know you and your culture – and on the other hand showing you this beautiful franconian city! General information about Erlangen Country: Germany State: Bavaria Administrative Region: Middle Franconia Area: 76.90 km2 (29.69 sq mi) Population: 105,554 Time zone: CET/CEST History Erlangen was first mentioned in 1002 but proofs that people lived there go back to 2000-800 B.C. During the thirty-years-war it was almost completly destroyed and for twenty years barely no one lived there. But when in 1685 King Ludwig XIV abrogated the Edict of Nantes and 180.000 Huguenots escaped to the UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Schweden and some german kingdoms, margrave Christian Ernst offered them Erlangen as a refugee camp and the city began to grow immediately. A complete new-town was planned and built. Unfortunately a great fire in 1706 destroyed almost the whole old town – and so the baroque sketch of the new town was extended to give the whole city an even look. It was finished around the middle of the 18 th century and still many buildings of that era exist since the city survived WWII almost untouched because Lieutenant Colonel Werner Lorleberg handed over the city without a struggle in 1945. Climate Like most parts of Germany, Erlangen has a temperate seasonal climate in which humid westerly winds predominate. The climate is moderated by the North Atlantic Drift, the northern extension of the Gulf Stream. Erlangen is located in a transition region which varies from moderately oceanic to continental climate. Winters are mild and summers tend to be cool, though temperatures can exceed 30°C (86°F). See the graphic to the left for further information. If you're arriving in winter (December to March) be sure to bring warm clothing and even in summer time (June-September) don't forget to pack some sweaters and long trousers. Social structure The rate for unemployment is constantly below 4% and the average year-salary of around 26953 Euro makes Erlangen one of the richest cities in Germany. Also, with over 25.000 students on approximatly 100.000 inhabitants the overall educational background is high and having at least a high school level is common. In 2010 6.905 criminal acts were recorded with only very few of them being considered as severe. Generally, Erlangen is a very safe city in which you can walk around alone all night (and day ^^) long.

Siemens As mentioned above, Erlangen is the headquarter of the Siemens concern and with 23.000 employees its biggest facility worldwide. Fraunhofer Institut Erlangen also has a large Fraunhofer institute – another fact that makes it a highly competitive research city. For example, the mp3 is from the Erlanger Fraunhofer institute for integrated circuits! Erlanger Bergkirchweih („Berch“) The Erlanger Bergkirchweih is a famous folk festival similar to the Oktoberfest. It takes place the thursday before pentecost until monday one week later at the „Burgberg“, a little hill in nothern Erlangen. The huge event which attracts over 1.000.000 visitors from all over the world each year is also called „the fifth time of the year“ by Erlangen's inhabitants. One reason why „the Berch“ is so popular is that it is over 250 years old – it first took place in 1755! Until 1999 the Erlangen's students even got a week off to visit the „Berch“ and still today friday after „Anstich“ (on the first day at 17 o'clock Erlangen's mayor opens a beer barrel with a hammer and everyone counts the beats he needed) most of the faculties decide that there are no lecture. (It may have to do with the fact that a lot of them are still drunk or at least have a huge hangover ;-) ). Anyway, „the Berch“ is a lot about drinking beer. Erlangen still has two own breweries and plus a long history of beer brewery. If you're interested you can also visit one of them during your stay here (more on that later).

The university and its hospitals The Friedrich-Alexander-University was founded in 1742 and is named after margrave Friedrich from Brandenburg/Bayreuth (he founded the university) and Karl-Alexander (he sponsered a lot). Right from the beginning medicine was, besides theology, philosophy and law, a subject of study. Nowadays there are five major faculties: philosophy and theology, law and economics, technics, natural sciences and last but not least the medical faculty. You can study 142 different subjects, learn 32 languages and archieve over 150 university degrees. Currently the university has 28.735 students, 12.000 employees and thereof 550 professors. Famous people who studied in Erlangen are Georg Simon Ohm, Felix Klein, Emil Fischer and many others.

Generally, there are two hospitals at which you could be placed (Your card of acceptance will tell you in which one in particular your clerkship will take place): Universitätsklinikum Erlangen (university hospital) The university hospital Erlangen is a maximum care hospital, which means it hosts all specialties including such as gynecology and neurosurgery. It was founded in 1824 and nowadays has 1306 beds, 5.999 employees and thereof 985 doctors. It's the main teaching hospital in Erlangen and its departments are spread all over the city, most of them downtown (expect dermatology) In 1982, the birth of germany's first test-tube baby attracted international attention – and ten years later the sad case of the „Erlanger Baby“ (a failed try to keep the body of a braindead pregnant woman alive so the baby could be born) If you're looking for more information please visit the homepage of your department or use the link below: http://www.english.uk-erlangen.de/ Waldkrankenhaus St. Marien The Waldkrankenhaus St. Marien is a teaching hospital affliated with the Friedrich-Alexander-University which offers basic care plus extended care in cardiology and gastroenterology as well maximum care concerning orthopedics and urology. It was founded 1959 and currently has 270 beds. It's situated in nothern Erlangen around the „Burgberg“, the are where the Erlanger Bergkirchweih (see above) takes place. For additional information about the hospital and its philosophy just use the link below: http://www.waldkrankenhaus.de/ (only in german)

Where you live Lodging You will be placed at either a students' hostel or a flat-sharing community like most of the german students themselves. There's also a small chance you are going to live with a host family. In this case we will inform you in advance. The largest students' hostel are: St. Elisabeth and Albertus Magnus (http://www.amselnetz.de/wohnanlage/) HaWo/ Hartmann Wohnheim (http://www.hawo.stw.uni-erlangen.de/) Rommel Wohnheim (http://www.rommel.stw.uni-erlangen.de/) Hofmann Wohnheim (http://www.hofmann.stw.uni-erlangen.de/drupal6/) Alexandrinum(http://www.alexandrinum.de) Boarding You will be provided some money for eating. At noon you may go to the „Palmeria“, an excellent cafeteria for doctors and other hospital employees.

What else to do in Erlangen / places to go Schlossgarten Right in beetween all the university buildings you will find the beautiful „Schlossgarten“ (castle garden) where Erlangen's students lie on the grass, relax and enjoy the sun in summer. It was built around 1786-1826 and was one of Franconia's first baroque scenery gardens. Each year the „Schlossgartenfest“, Europe's biggest garden party takes place in this famous park.

Schlossgartenfest

Burgberg (Figurengarten and Platenhäuschen) In Erlangen's rich north you find an area called „Burgberg“ (see „Bergkirchweih“). The ground where the big fair takes place is pretty unspectualar during the rest of the however. However, if you walk up the small hill there's the „Figurengarten“, a small park with modern art sculptures. Futhermore you can find a jewish graveyard and the „Platenhäuschen“, a little house where the poet August von Platen once lived . Botanischer Garten

botanical garden

Next to the Schlossgarten, on the backside of the childrens' hospital you can find „Botanischer Garten“, a garden where 4000 different plants on two hectar are cultivated and presented to the visitor. There's also a green house in which tropical plants and cactusus are growing. In the middle of the garden you can find the Neischl cave, an artificial dropstone cave. It's open from May-September on sundays from 14 to 16 o'clock.

Beer Brewery (Kitzmann or Steinbach) In earlier times Erlangen had a lot of different breweries. Nowadays only two of them are left: „Kitzmann“ and „Steinbach Bräu“. Both offer guided tours and beer tasting. Of course you can also only go there, sit in the beer garden and enjoy „the typical german drink“ (in fact, german don't drink THAT much beer – the Czech win that competition ;-) ) Shopping „Arcaden“ The „Erlanger Arcaden“ are a shopping mall downtown that were built in 2007. You will find everything from jewelry over electronics, old nintendo games and food to clothing, shoes and starbucks there. Probably the best address if you just want to get some things and don't know where to look for it. http://www.erlangen-arcaden.de/ Markgrafentheater If you understand german you could also visit the theather – it's a beautiful old baroque theather (in fact, the oldest one that is still used in southern germany) and plays are usually of great quality. More information about prices and play table can be found on the website: http://www.theater-erlangen.de/

Swimming pools In Erlangen you can find two outdoor swimming pool („Freibad West“ and „Röthelheimbad“) - they're small but cheap and in summer it's always a nice idea. „Röthelheimbad“ also has an indoor swimming pool but it's mainly for sportsmen. However, there are a lot of great and fun swimming pools around Erlangen. http://www.palm-beach.de/ (numerous waterslides, whirlpools etc.) http://www.atlantis-bad.de/ (3 waterslides, wave pool, whirlpools, etc.) Cities around Erlangen Germany's railway system is very well organised and the the railroad network is really dense. Therefor you can easily visit other cities during your free time. As long as you're in Bavaria you can buy a day ticket for the train (http://www.bahn.de) for 20€ (group ticket: 30€) - and for shorter distances like Nuremberg there's the VGN network (http://www.vgn.de/) with cheaper tickets. Nuremberg – 20km Bamberg – 40km Würzburg – 90km Munich – 190km (day trip → social program)

Our local team (bvmd Erlangen)

We are a crazy group of around ten students from preclinical and clinical semesters – and we're funny, smart, good looking, intelligent, likeable and of course totally self-deprecating. ;-) No, really joking aside: We care about you – and we want to make your visit as amazing as possible. Please see us as your partner and ask whenever you have questions or need help. If your personal contact person doesn't know the answer we will find a solution together. During your stay here we will organise a social program (more on that on the next topic) so take some time and get to know us.

-6-

Social program Of course you don't want to work all day and night. Medical clerkships in germany are hard work but there's still some time left for free time. Since we want you to enjoy your stay here we are going to organise some events and daytrips for you. Thus we get to know you – and you get to know us and our country. Plus, social program is free of charge for you! The next points are excerpts of our social program this year. Of course we can't guarantee that all of them will take place during the time of your stay - but be sure to save some time for us, you definitly won't regret. ;-) Tuesday cooking – National dinner Every tuesday evening we want to cook with you! On the first tuesday evening after your arrival we will make same typical german food for you. The other days we hope to get to know what you and the other incomings are eating at home – so it's time for „national dinner“. Trip to „Fränkische Schweiz“ (Little Switzerland) The Little Switzerland is a very popular holiday region in germany with smaller mountains and beautiful landscapes. It's famous of its many caves with „Devil's Cave“ being the biggest one. Futhermore there are numerous castles and ruins all over Litlle Switzerland. Be excited what we're going to do on our day trip (saturday/ sunday) Trip to Munich Since most of the students coming to germany always want to visit Munich, we'll organise a trip to go there. By train it takes around three hours to get there so this event will be held on a saturday or sunday. What are we going to do in Munich? Well, that depends both on the weather and on what you're interested in. In summer e.g. we will visit the English Garden and Castle Nymphenburg – if the weather is good we can also have a picknick there. Furthermore there are a lot of interesting museums in Munich, for example the „Beer and Oktoberfest Museum“, the Rockmuseum, the BMW museum or the toy museum. Of course there are numerous art galleries and memorials, too. Night Watchmen Tour The Night Watchmen Tour is a night tour through Erlangen with a guide who will tell you some creepy, mysterious, funny or interesting facts about Erlangen. Tours are held in English And German. Guided tour „Entlas Keller“ (beer cellar) The „Entas Keller“ tour takes you down deep inside the „Burgberg“ - the small hill in northern Erlangen where the „Erlanger Bergkirchweih“ (see above) takes place. In earlier times these cellars were used to cool the brewed beer during the hot summer months – and some of them are still in use!

Exchange conditions You are expected to work as much as the german students do. This usually means five days a week and eight hours a day. However, if you have a good reason why you need a day off or have to leave earlier it should be possible to find a solution. If we recieve mayor complaints from the hospital concerning your work or reliability we may terminate your clerkship immediately. You don't need to bring special clothing since you recieve coats and scrubs at the hospital. -7-
