FIELDS AND PASTURES

Feltre is a lovely artistic town lying at the foot of breathtaking mountains belonging to the UNESCO Dolomites (System 3 - Pale di San Martino, San Lucano, Dolomiti Bellunesi and Vette Feltrine). The Dolomites have been designated a site of outstanding universal value due to their contribution to the development of geological science, their many different types of geodiversity, the role they have played in the evolution of life following devastating situations (extinction, volcanic eruptions) and the scenic, aesthetic and structural features of the landscape. Many famous geologists were born in Feltre; a large number of literary figures, inventors, scientists, doctors and artists were inspired by the beauty of these places. Due to the typical farming methods practised in the area, the landscape is dotted with plots of land where fruit, vegetables and cereals are grown, occasional row of plants harmoniously interspersed by forage, roads lined with hedges and trees, meadows, terraces and woodland. This variety gives many places a highly evocative appeal, underlining the involvement of man and his relationship with the environment. Man has left many marks in nature, to the extent that they feature in it and flourish in the art inspired by these places, evidence of which can be found in the old town centre of Feltre. Here the countryside is part of the aesthetics of the landscape.

The scenery of the hills and foothills of the Valbelluna and Feltre area often offers harmonious scenes of rural life where time has stood still. The vast area at the foot of the mountains and its fortunate orientation have led to a variety of different settlements, some even dating back to ancient times, occupying spaces and terraces that are blessed by the sun. The mountains are easy to reach, thanks in part to the numerous, deep cuts in the landscape, caused by the uninterrupted action of magnificent mountain streams such as the Stien and the Caorame. Subsistence farming and rearing of animals on the one hand, and the organisation of the estates on the other, dictated the history of these places, leaving marks which are still visible today. Each place has its own distinctive character, reflected in the large open spaces and the particular angle of the light when it plays on the land in the different days and seasons.

Thanks to man’s labours, this land produces many fine products: beans, maize, barley, pumpkins, honey, numerous different variePRODUCTS ties of fruit and vegetables. Over the past few years, vine growing has been carefully reintroduced, reviving highly resistant age-old native grape varieties and land which was once vineyards. A large amount of uncultivated public farmland has also been given over to allotments and the cultivation of organic produce and products in danger of genetic erosion, and assigned to anyone applying for it as part of the project “La terra a chi la coltiva” (Giving the land to those who farm it). As far as the local ancient milk and cheese producing tradition is concerned, there is still the odd dairy which shares its products amongst its members, not far from the leading cooperative Lattebusche. There are many opportunities to learn about and enjoy the produce of Feltre. One particular event is the Antica Fiera di San Matteo, a festival-market dating back to ancient times, which is held on the second Sunday of November every year. Visitors can find walnuts from Feltre and other traditional farm products which are grown locally.
