Q.
HOW DOES THE DESIGN OF A WORKING ENVIRONMENT ALTER THE RESULT OF A CREATIVE PERSON?

The drive for this research question arose from my colleagues and creative driven peers having brought attention to why their output changes when working in various environments.

CONTEXTUAL RELEVANCE
There is a need for consistency, productivity and engagement for a working environment to progress and be successful (Vyas, Dhaval, Gerrit van der Veer, and Anton Nijholt 2013).
As many creative spaces have limitations such as economics, space and culture, with skill these can all be managed to create a working environment that coincides with the user.

VISUAL WEIGHT TESTS
I will collect first hand research by physically taking an individual into four various spaces, completing the same job within a particular time frame, then analysing and refl ecting on how and why their work differed in each environment.
CONTRIBUTING THEORETICAL DISCOURSE
Elements presented in a space such as texture, material and colour, all contribute to the way a person physically and mentally feels in a space. The ergonomics of furniture embedded in a space can definitely create a dampening affect on the user (Reddy 2012).

They all share the same objective, to use design to alter a person’s emotions and experiences within a space. All exemplars give their vision on what affects us when surrounded by particular elements.

CRITIQUE
I have also started to photograph my own workspaces including my home studio, external work office, internship studio and a local cafĂŠ.
Create a larger scale investigation, using volunteers to partake in a series of longer and more physical tests.
Visually critiquing the images, video and information I have documented
The first method I will use to collect data is through the use of a short survey.

CONCLUSION
After researching, analysing and critiquing, I have learnt that there is a broad range of elements within a space that can contribute to altering ones output. It is evident that ongoing productions of spaces are being created purely to alter our perception, feelings and emotions.
I know that what we may see as a perfect working environment, may not be the case, as particular structures and elements within the space may contain visual weights and barriers that change the psychological perception of the creative worker in the environment without them knowing.

FUTURE RESEARCH
Are they in a secure financial position to create the perfect working environment? Are they aware of interior design and how it affects they way we move, think and communicate?
I will look more closely at human psychology and how the brain works. I will research the education and socioeconomic status of creative people to see if this impacts their surroundings.
THANK YOU.
