Editor’s Letter Have you ever had that moment of clarity in a dream where you realize “this is a dream”? That is what lucid is to me. Realization, a bright, clear moment in a sea of murky confusion. But ironically, the meaning of the word lucid itself fluctuates. While often it is associated with dreams, other definitions of Lucid include bright/luminous; being coherent; and showing ability to think clearly, especially in the intervals between periods of confusion or insanity. For this special 20th issue of Chroma, our photographers created series inspired by one of the many definitions of lucid. I am so proud of all the work that was put into this and also quite grateful for a few people who helped me create this issue. Special thanks to Spoons Bradshaw who critiqued the early versions of Lucid and aided in troubleshooting problems I had in Indesign. She also copied by hand, and arranged the text for, the series “Dream Diary”. Another big thanks to the previous editors Ellie Josephson and Kastine Cook who gave me Indesign tips that helped me start this issue. And thank you, our dear readers, for the support you offer to the young artists we showcase in each issue simply by reading. Fond Regards, Nadia Stupski, Editor

My photo series takes its origin of the word lucid through it’s literary definition of bright or luminous and also the definition of clear, my concept is based off of the ideas of ancient biblical art with halos around a religious figures head, showing their divinity and clarity.

Also showcasing this connection to ancient religious art is the choice of grain, attempting to make a textured and almost withered look to my series. The idea I played with was my model being seen as a religious figure, a person of great clarity, being worshiped by hands surrounding the model but never being able to touch him, with the exclusion of two pictures, this is in refference to the painting entitled “The Creation of Adam” from the renaissance era.

Definition of lucid 1: suffused with light With this definition in mind, I sought to create a series that included images exuding light via glitter. I took portraits of a few different people, and then printed those out. I painted glue onto the parts of the portrait that I wanted to add glitter to, and then proceeded to do so. Once I had finished creating the images, I scanned them onto a computer, and added final touches in Photoshop. 34

I know where you went but I don’t know how you got I know where you went but I don’t know how you got Silver tongue hill where you talk up what I’ d play down I would speak up but I wouldn’t know what to say To say To say Lucidity, come back to me, Put all five senses back to where they’re meant to be Oh it’s hard to tell, it breaks down, There is a will, there is a way Wondering around like spare time never knew it, I might suck fizzle or I might just float away And we’ll go running off tonight High above, where we won’t even need to reach the sky, my love Oh there will be a change in the air, nobody will be anybody else Lucidity, come back to me, Put all five senses back to where they’re meant to be Oh where we’ll go, tip toe, tread boldly right down To the lair, ah ah ah Lucidity- Tame Impala 41

I made my photo series based around this game because it has a lot to do with dreams, but also I resonate with Madoktsuki, since I too once used dreams as an escape from the real world. 58

I close my eyes. The picture is crystal clear. It was you, I wanted here. But yet next to me in this moment is an empty space. 62

Point (포인트) is a Korean slang or saying that means the most important part of something. For this series I wanted to bring attention to aspects of the face that might not be considered the focus of a person’s features. It would be a shame if each beautiful line that is found on the human face went unnoticed. For me, the ‘point’ of human beauty lies in the unnasumming details, in every curve of the eyelid or shadow cast by a lip. 7777
