For this months Chroma we focus on lifes most powerful force: love. We listen to songs about love, we watch movies about love and we all love something or someone. It’s a universal thing we can all relate to and it plays very well into the month of June: Pride month. Our Chroma team wanted to share our thoughts and ideas around this feeling and hopefully our dear readers can celebrate with us. We sincerly hope you all have a happy pride month even with all that is going on in the world. Stay safe and we hope you enjoy Chroma: Desire.

Turmoil
Alex Wheatley
1
In this issue of Chroma, I wanted to focus on my relationship with myself in contrast to my series in “Chroma: It’s Complicated” where I portrayed an isolated couple. I wanted this series to feel more personal with my ideas of love and more specifically the love I have for myself and my identity.
2
These photos represent the small things I do to make me feel more comfortable with myself but my family seems to take a problem with and have sat me down to tell me that it makes them feel uncomfortable. Turmoil is defined as “a state of great disturbance, confusion, or uncertainty which I feel fits this series best.
3
Turmoil for how my family feels about my own self-expression, and how I don’t feel cemented into my Identity, it’s something that I’m still trying to figure out and keeps changing every day. Model: Alex Wheatley

Ode to Viceroy by Mac Demarco
Viceroy Early in the morning Just trying to let the sun in And open up my eyes Viceroy As it’s getting later Heading for the corner Already running dry And oh, don’t let me see you crying ‘Cause oh, honey, I’ll smoke you ‘til I’m dying Viceroy Don’t take me for a fool now I’m only trying to calm down Just trying to keep it cool Viceroy As it’s getting later Heading for the corner I’m leaving it to you And oh, don’t let me see you crying ‘Cause oh, honey, I’ll smoke you ‘til I’m dying Model: Ben Kautz

I made a series about the other side of Valentine’s day, the perspective of the single person. The title I chose was “Fadeaway” because the main idea of the series is that when your single and people around you are in relationships they seem to fade away.
22
For me, valentine’s day is usually hard to deal with because I’m never in a relationship and most of my friends are. So I wanted to convey that feeling in a photo series.
23
24
I set up a tripod and took multiple pictures with Zviko in different spots and then edited them into cool fading people. I cropped and dropped the opacity on copies of Zviko and then moved them accordingly to create a simulated motion effect. Models: Zviko M, Justin Yu

For this series I wanted to look at the different kinds of love and how that applies to their happiness. I photographed people together and alone, doing activities in places that bring them joy. Some of these places include arcades and the park. Locations: Wunderland Arcade West Minnehaha Park
42
I used dark lighting for some shots and natural lighting for others. I posed my models by telling them to act like I wasn’t there and to have fun with their friend. Models: Rylee Latham Sophie Oaks Justice Florendo Jaden Gabbard

The items in these photos are personal items, so they kind of mean something to me in a weird way. I wanted to show the beauty of these tools I use. I tried to highlight the shapes of these tools.
For this issue of chroma, I wanted to focus on my relationship with black hair. Kinky hair is always seen as “unkempt”, “dirty” or “weird”. My goal with this series is to normalize black hair care.

For my series, I staged and created a spread of food photography, focusing around one central meal. We were challenged to create a series surrounding the theme of love, and cooking is something that I love to do at home. This series gave me the chance to creatively explore something I do often, and it was a very enjoyable experience. I used certain ingredients of the meal as “props, and staged a dining table setting in my studio at home. I shot my photos with a prime lens to accentuate the depth of field, and edited the final photos in Adobe LightRoom. Model: Spaghetti

Often when we think about love, we think about others, but without self love how can we have love for others? These are the questions that inspired me to create a series about the things that people love about themselves. I took each photo to have a different background in a natural setting to highlight the uniqueness of each person. I hope that viewers will be inspired to consider what they love about themselves.
