r e t t e L s ’ r o t i d Greetings dearest readers! For this chroma, in these dark final months of winter, we chose to shift our attention to the light. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” I hope you enjoy the following series focusing on the warmth and joy that keeps us going in trying times.

In This Chroma ...
I was heavily inspired by portraits taken of sex symbols in the 1950s, like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Julie Newmar, Mary Wells, Lana Turner & Hazel Scott. I wanted this series to be very focused on the details of Chastity’s face, very similar to how the portraits were taken back then.
11
I wanted to give the aura of hollywood glamour & really capturing the small details. Drag is art, and art can definitely help those who are struggling find light in the darkness, so I tried my best to celebrate the art of Chastity Rose.

The city of Portland is by far my favorite thing in the world to look at and admire. Sometimes when you live somewhere for a long time your surroundings seem to blur and a lot of the time you aren’t taking in and really appreciating all the beauty around you, but I have never stopped being allured by all the beautiful things in downtown Portland. So I decided to capture my favorite thing about Portland at night, the pretty bright red lights.
Enjoy! 31

For this series I wanted to sh ow how light and hap piness goes togethe r. The sun is our natura l light, it brings joy to those touched by it s yellow rays. I took in spiration from the colo r of the sun as well a s things that bring me joy. I photog raphed different kind s of yellow flowe rs with honey and g litter because they invoke almost childis h feelings of happiness and are the color of th e sun. 39

For January’s issue of chroma, I decided to make this series personal. In a few months when I finish my sophomore year of high school I am going to be moving to Florida. Growing up in Vancouver, I always hated living here. I thought it was kind of boring and nothing really happened. While that is very true now that I’m leaving I’m starting to appreciate the beauty of the city.

Downtown was always the prime hangout spot for me and my friends. I have so many valuable memories there so I wanted to show it in a special way. The white glow in the middle of two of the photographs represent light coming into a dark place and the white fading effect on the other three represent me leaving a place that was so important to my growth as a young man. I wanted to create a series that is simple but also effective visually.

As winter approaches, the days grow shorter and the daylight dimmer. It’s during these months that the little light that is able to penetrate through is even more important than ever for both the environment and our spirits. We live in a very unique place, and this lack of light during the wintertime (although perhaps undesirable) adds to the uniqueness of the natural landscape. I find myself feeling more gratitude for the rare days with sunny mornings during this time of year, and I wanted to capture this idea in a photo series. A challenge that I faced while taking these photos was finding the right time of day to have enough light in a setting dense with trees. To work with this, I experimented with intentionally using the sun as a subject in my photos.

I made a series of five photos using a long shutter speed and minimal editing. The photos are all taken in the darkroom and show me as multiple people with different opacities. With the photos of my face, I make different emotions per sideways face, which represents what people can feel but doesn’t let out which can be harmful to them and others.

The theme for this chroma was “bring the light into the darkness” and I wanted to do that kinda literally by shooting the series in the darkroom. I choose to do self-portraits because most of the time I’m alone in the darkroom. It is kind of a safe haven to me, when I’m down I go to the darkroom, it’s the only place where I don’t feel lonely when I’m alone.
66
I shot all the photos at a 25-second shutter speed, with a 1.8 aperture(due to the red light). I held my position for 7 seconds each then moved and that’s what created the trail effect. None of the photos were altered dramatically(except for color correction and contrast).

For my photo series I wanted to show light in a different way, light to me means something that makes me happy, and one of my biggest passions is makeup. I have been inspired by editorial makeup like the kind that you see on the runway in fashion. Very glamorous to attract attention. For my photo series I created an 80’s inspired glamor shot using editorial makeup around the eyes and make fake tear drops. How I created the teardrops was with hot glue, I put the hot glue droplets on a sheet of parchment paper for the glue to dry into shape, then after the tears were formed I painted glitter over the top of the droplets to 73 have a high shine look.
I was very inspired by last year’s MET Gala with the theme “Campy” which is over the top and dramatic. From which I was inspired to make an 80’s glam shot but over the top with the dramatic teardrops. I did the makeup by blending the pinks and purples together, then adding white lines to the end of the eye along with dots right above the crease. Once the makeup was done, I set up my colored lights and used colored clear paper to create the 80’s soft colored look. I did this because I have a passion for makeup and wanted to do something that would make me happy along with a subject matter I would like to work with, this also gave me practice along with working with extra details such as the hot glue to 74incorporate into a makeup look.

Color and light play an important role in everyone’s life whether that’s through expression or character. When working on my series I wanted to show how light can bring color and life back into your life. We can now change light to fit our preferences by manipulating it, changing its hue, and its color. By manipulating light and its refractions through crystals I projected rainbows and color hues onto my model’s face. When I see a rainbow I think of hope, happiness, and new beginnings. When prompted with bringing light into the darkness, I knew I wanted to incorporate 81 rainbows and colors.

In this series I wanted to go back to the basics of light painting in order to portray a warped image of the Jantzen Beach nightlights and construction cranes around Downtown Vancouver. I also wanted my series to be more abstract and resemble a painting rather than portrait photography in an attempt to expand my breadth as an artist even further.

For this theme of light I wanted to work with different colored lights and a model. I cut up cds and glued them on my models face to capture the light I was reflecting on my models face to make certain places on her face brighter.
96
I wanted to pull the viewers eyes to other different locations on my portraits then where they would be normally. I used celafain to get the colored borders on my photos to create an enclosed border around my model enrapturing her. That is why I titled my series enclosed.
