Cover Story
Mike Catoe's 1956 Pan Head
Let us step back in time to the year 1956. The United States expanded the number of its military advisers in South Vietnam, the very first American to die in the Vietnam war, the term "Viet Cong" came into use. Other things happened in 1956; Harley Davison made a 1956 Pan Head, and a baby boy by the name of Mike Catoe was born. It wasn't until 18 years later that this baby, now an 18-year-old young man, would be at a huge lake called Lake Robinson. Mike was enjoying his 4th of July at the Easterlings landing, when someone told Mike: Doug's Harley-Davidson had a Pan Head for sale. Away, Mike and his friend went! Headed to Doug's Harley-Davison dealership to see this 1956 Pan Head. To Mikes dismay, Doug's was closed but he could see the 1956 Pan Head inside the show room window! His heart skipped a beat and he knew he had to own it. Mike had a vision of riding down the Highway on this 1956 Pan Head and it became more than he could stand! Away they went to a pay phone. (For those of you too young to know what a pay phone is: it is a lot like a cell phone, it cost you money to use and you could contact people without having to go home to call! The only problem: they were attached to a pole or booth.) Mike was able to contact Doug
and arranged for him to come to the dealership on July 4th, 1974! $1,800.00 cash and a few papers signed Mike road away on his 1956 Pan Head. Since that first day and 3 speed odometers later, Mike has logged well over 100,000 plus miles! Taking trips as far as Dallas, Texas and each and every year since the early 70's to the late 80's, going to Daytona Bike Rally. Mike and his beloved Pan Head both turned 64 this year. He has made a world of memories on his bike and met a lot of friends. One being his best friend, his wife, whom he married on the bike in 1983, 9 years after he bought it. As years go by, our bodies don't quite allow us to do things we could do in our earlier years... such as riding a Ridged Frame Bike. Mike has a 2007 street glide he rides now when he takes his trips. But if you are ever out and about on an early Sunday morning, you just might see Mike and his Patriotic American Flag, 1956 Pan Head, on the roads of Lancaster County. Each Sunday morning, Mike has the colors of our country out for a 50 or 60 mile run, so if you see Mike and the American Flag Pan Head, give him a wave or salute our Great Flag!

A Biker’s Devotional By Dennis Reynolds
I suppose the EPA would probably have a fit these days, but at the time, it was a great idea. Apparently, the highway department had used that same technology to build the picnic area for people to stop, sit for a while, and enjoy the majesty of the river and the mountains. As Bill looked across the river at those junk cars, he said, "I guess you can even take junk and make something beautiful." God treats us the same way!! Those old cars started out as something beautiful. When they rolled off the assembly line, they were awesome creations of beauty. In the showroom, they were immaculate! Then they were sold and some of them were wrecked, or broke down from lack of maintenance, or just fell to neglect. Whatever the case, they all wound up in a junk yard. Something no one would want... Until someone renewed their purpose and they became something beautiful! You know, we are created in God's image with so much promise. God's word tells us that He creates us as a masterpiece, the crown jewels of His creation. Then, many times, we go through life ignoring Him and living our own way until we wind up with a messy existence and a ton of problems that seem too big to handle. We turn to stuff that makes it even worse, until finally we are without hope... Just like those old junk cars... But, if you are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, if you are weary of simply going from day to day without purpose, or if you just want to make a change of the better, God can take whatever mess we have made, and make it something beautiful!!! If you need Him to, He will change your life. All you need to do is ask Jesus, and He will surely give you a renewed purpose, and a life change!!! Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Ride on, stay safe!
I would like to tell you all a story about one of my favorite places in the world. It is a place that reminds me of God's love and how He can take worthless junk and turn it into something beautiful. The mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee are home to some of the finest motorcycling roads in the world. The twisties through the valleys and around the mountains seem never ending, and the views can be breathtaking! About 15 years ago, my friend Bill Becker and I were riding in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park just west of Cherokee. We had been riding for most of the day, and decided it was time to take a rest break. After crossing a short river bridge, we noticed a small riverside park with a couple picnic tables that looked just perfect for a quick breather and a bottle of water. While we were sitting at the table taking in the sights and sounds of the rushing river, I noticed something shiny sticking out of the riverbank just below us. Puzzled, we started looking around and stepped down to the edge of the river and looked up at the bank. We found that the shiny piece of metal was the chrome front bumper of a 57 Chevy. Someone had literally buried an entire 57 Chevy in the bank of the river. There were other cars buried there as well and the dirt had washed away just enough for them to be visible. There was a Plymouth Valiant, a Ford Crown Victoria, and even a Studebaker! They had all been crushed flat and stacked on top of each other to form the base for the picnic area. As we looked around, we saw that not only the picnic area was made of old cars, but the road leading up to the bridge was constructed in the same manner. As a matter of fact, MOST of the riverside road for a couple of miles was constructed of these old junk automobiles! It seems that years ago, with very little suitable land available to build parts of HWY 441, some- Dennis Reynolds one got the bright idea to crush hundreds of junk Mideast Regional Elder vehicles and stack them together. Then they Bikers For Christ M/M covered them with dirt as the base for the road construction. This way, they wouldn't need as much dirt and it would recycle the junk cars.

Dr. Dilligaf
Got something to ask dr. dilligaf?? send it to carolinachrome@yahoo.com
Dr. Dilligaf, Do you have any quick tips for remaining safe on a Motorcycle? I want to make sure that I’m around for my kids and grandkids. Cautious. Cautious, I sure do. Statistics show that 4 0f 10 motorcycle crashes causing serious injury or death occur on urban roadways or city streets. Sources also say that they most frequently occur between the hours of 4 and 8pm and that they occur more often on Saturday than any other day of week. Straight up probabilities that you can adjust to. I know years ago that I read where most traffic fatalities happened within ten miles of home. We built a new house twelve miles away and we’re still around. Good luck and ride safe. Except don’t be on your bike in town on Saturday between 4 and 8pm. ~Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Dilligaf, I pulled up on my bike last night at a local spot to spend a little time with some of my brothers from the wind. Not off my scoot but a second when a stranger started a conversation that I’ve heard many times. It began like this “I used to ride but”. I’m sure at your age that you have heard that line many more times than I have. I can imagine you rolling your eyes right now. What are some of the craziest reasons people have given you for why they used to ride but no longer do? Signed, Haven’t heard them all. HHTA, I don’t know about crazy, but I do know about stupid reasons. The lamest is “I had to stop; I was going to kill myself”. The Lack of selfcontrol is a character flaw not a reason to give up something that you love. If the love of freedom you get from riding is the motivating factor for being on a Bike. I know I’m not that guy who does it to save money on gas. If that were the case, I would ride a Moped. Just had to slap myself after typing that. But we do all know people that can’t control themselves, I suggest that they just stay home anyway. There are lots of video on TV now that show excellent examples of who I’m talking about. Truth be known though, when I hear someone say this, I just assume they were lying to begin with. Another reason I’ve heard is “My wife made me stop riding because she loves me so much”. I just threw up a little in my mouth typing that. Why doesn’t she quit feeding your fat butt so much? She’s killing you from the inside out already. A woman who truly loves a man is going to enable and facilitate the things that bring him joy. And there is nothing more joyful that running the roads on two wheels. Happy Spouse/ Happy House. I just made that up. The perfect woman isn’t the pret-

tiest one, she’s the most giving one. Side note (Honey, are you reading this)? Once again, I assume that all lies. A couple more, then I’ll close; “I already have enough scars”. Is there a limit on scars? Heck there isn’t much a good tattoo won’t cover. I don’t know that I have any motorcycle scars myself. I’ve burned myself a few times on hot pipes and had my gonads knocked up somewhere behind my navel but no lasting visible marks to mention. On the other hand, I have some from being stabbed and sure enough I’ve tried to put an end to being stabbed. I also have some from working, but you know what?.... That’s right, I haven’t quit working. Maybe they are talking about emotional scars. You know the ones you get when you pull up on your ride and everyone pretends that you’re invisible. Or when the girl you pick up behind the biker bar turns out to be a guy. Once again, Lies. Then finally, “I’ve put on so much weight, I look ridiculous”. You are kidding me. Everyone should know when it comes to Bikers, we are all judged not by our appearance but on the content of our character. I know that to be fact, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve overheard someone talking about me saying “He’s quite the character”. Now, I ‘m not saying someone doesn’t look ridiculous, I’ve got photos to prove that, a lot of people do. But looking ridiculous on a bike is way cooler than looking ridiculous in a car. ~Dr. Dilliagaf

PGR Mission for Stephen Walrath
By Wally Wersching I was invited to participate in a PGR graveside mission for Stephen Walrath on Saturday May 9th at 1:30 in the afternoon at the Hickory Grove cemetery in Hickory Grove, SC. Stephen was a US Marine veteran who served in Vietnam, when he died at the young age of 67. Agent Orange was a chemical that the U.S. government sprayed over the Vietnam countryside to kill the vegetation and crops. The men on the ground were not aware of the toxic nature of the chemical, and many of the Vietnam War Veterans have died from the Agent Orange effects. Stephen was active in the Wounded Warrior Project. He had four sons, and one daughter along with seventeen grandchildren. He was a well-respected Stephen Walrath member of the community. Before I went on the mission, I looked up Stephen’s obituary. I always like to know a little about the person we are honoring. He looked very young in his picture, and there were a lot of nice things said about him. I was looking forward to being there for him and his family. I left home about 12:30 on Saturday. I dressed warm because the temperature when I left was in the upper 50’s. It didn’t take too long to get to Hickory Grove, SC. I headed south on Rt 5, and turned off at Rt 97, then followed it all the way to Hickory Grove. The cemetery was on the right when I entered town. I parked “Miss Vickie” in the line with the other bikes. Then I took a stack of Carolina Chrome magazines out of my pack, and started to give them to the bikers who were there. Before I got very far, “Squid” rode in, and parked his bike behind mine. He’s a member of the local Christian Motorcyclists Association chapter, and I hadn’t seen him since last year. It is always pleasant to visit with old friends. I knew a few of the other bikers who attended the mission, and made friends with many others before we went on the flag line. More and more bikes were rolling in. When all were there, they totaled about twenty. I talked with a few, and they said that Saturday was the only day they could come. Then Harvey called us all together for instructions. This was one of the first PGR Honor Missions in this area during the pandemic, and we followed all rules and regulations set by the CDC, and the South Carolina Veterans’ Affairs. Each attendee was required to bring a personnel face-covering.
20
It did not have to be an actual mask, any sort of covering was sufficient. PGR members were required to maintain at least a six-foot distance between each other during the briefing and flag line. We were also instructed to be no closer than forty feet from the family funeral tent. Ride Captain - Harvey Mayhill, and his wife Lin officiated over the event. No other military group was there, so the PGR had to do everything. The funeral group was arriving so we hurried to get our flag line in place. There were a lot of cars, and a few motorcycles in the funeral procession. Once the hearse was parked, they moved Stephen under the funeral tent. The service started with the playing of “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipe by the Highland Piper. Then Reverends Sandy Renner and Larry Nunn took over. Joshua, one of Stephen’s sons tried to say something about his dad but was very emotional. He finally was able to say what he wanted. Then Reverend Renner spoke the eulogy which was very lengthy.
During that time, one of the PGR members collapsed. A couple of the other members ran to his aid while Lin rushed to the truck to get a bottle of cold water. It wasn’t that hot, but it’s not hard to get light headed while standing still for so long. After the closing prayer, one of the PGR members played taps on the trumpet. Then Harvey and Lin folded the flag that was over the coffin, and gave it to the family. Harvey motioned to us to take the flags back to the truck, so we all walked slowly carrying the flags upright until we took the shaft apart, and rolled them up for the next mission. As I walked to “Miss Vickie”, I said my good-bys to everyone. It felt so good to sit on her gel seat, and lift my legs to her floorboards. My feet really hurt after standing for so long. I don’t mind walking for an hour but standing still for me is a killer! I backtracked up Rt 97 to Rt 5, and home to Shelby. I got home a little before 4:00PM. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon – with friends honoring a real hero.
