GOD’S GPS

About ten years ago, a good brother of mine we affectionately call “Chicken” decided to ride up to DC from his home in North Carolina and spend the weekend camping with us at the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally. We arrived at the campground on Wednesday evening, but he would not be able to join us until Friday. Chicken and three of his riding partners left North Carolina at around 6pm Friday evening and had planned on a four-hour ride to meet up with us. That would have put them at the campground around 10pm. To say it rained that Friday night would be an understatement! Chicken, an old school biker, was not a guy to invest in rain gear as he thought it was “sissified” and would not be a part of it. While he was riding, the torrential rain was beating him in the face, water sprayed up from the road, and passing vehicles drenched the four motorcycles. Finally, after taking all they could, the men hit an exit ramp and looked for a dry place to give us a call. While he had no real idea how close he was to our location when he called me, they were less than a mile from the campground. It was nearly 1am. Now keep in mind, it was dark, there was a blistering rain, he wore a half helmet, and he had no windshield.

When I asked how he had kept up with his directions in that freaking monsoon in the middle of the night, he shined a flashlight onto the yellow tank of his Harley. “Bro,” He said, “I got an old school GPS!” What I saw next was nothing short of amazing. Chicken had taken a grease pencil and written the directions from his home in North Carolina to the campground In Millersville Maryland on his gas tank. “Grease pencils are waterproof bro!” he announced in that big smile! Chicken and his companions had weathered a torrential storm, horrible traffic, and low visibility to get where they were going based on a mappedout route written on a gas tank. These days, there are tons of ways to plan where we are going. There are paper maps, on board navigation systems, and yes, I suppose there are grease pencils. For me, paper road maps are almost a thing of the past. These days, almost everyone who has a phone has some type of GPS. You can even purchase a motorcycle with an integrated navigation system that will take you wherever you want to go, right down to a local restaurant. Regardless of what type of map we choose to use, proper directions on any trip keeps us on the right road and out of trouble. Just as every trip necessitates some sort of destination planning, our Christian lives require clear and concise direction as well. So, where do we go for guidance as Christians? The answer to that question is the Holy Bible. There are those who say the Bible has been translated and retranslated which makes it no longer relevant. Others discard the Bible as archaic and out of touch with reality. Both of those things are adamantly false. The Bible is the living and breathing word of God. Just as being able to look at a few lines scribbled on a gas tank led Chicken and his fellow riders almost to our doorstep, God’s word will lead us through the trials of life and give us clear directions to our safe harbor in Heaven. Without studying God’s word, we will surely lose our way.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any doubleedged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Iron Butt Association’s “Saddle Sore 1000” Submitted by Patrick “Matrix” Lee

On August 21 st over 50 bikers accomplished the Iron Butt Association’s Saddle Sore 1000 by participating in the Inaugural Southeast Iron Butt Tour. What made this different from most IBA rides was that this was a coordinated effort of 4 Indian Motorcycle Riders Group chapters spread throughout the southeast and in a year where many motorcycle events and rallies have been cancelled, this event survived. Combat Vets Association and Fire & Iron Motorcycle Club also participated in the ride. Everything kicked off with groups starting at 4:00 AM in 3 separate locations: Marietta GA, Knoxville TN, and Charleston SC. All groups followed the same route plan with the Charleston beginning at American Biker/Indian of Charleston to Savannah, Macon, Marietta, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Greer, and finally back to Charleston. There were 34 Indian’s, 15 Harley’s, 3, Honda’s, 2 BMW’s, 2 Victory’s, a Kawasaki, a Suzuki, and a Triumph. The youngest rider was only 16 years old and had to stop and rebuild a carburetor on the side of the highway, but he persevered and finished the ride in time. Some of the riders drove all the way from Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Florida just to participate. The first group of riders completed the Iron Butt challenge at just over 18 hours pulling into the starting point at 12:15 AM on August 22 nd . The event proceeds went to Operation Homefront, an organization made to benefit veteran families when and where they need it most. Check out www.southeastironbutt.com to see pictures and videos from the ride and after-parties.
