Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Dilligaf, I took the motorcycle rider’s safety class and I did not pass. I am deathly afraid of using my front brakes. I suppose that the fear came from some accidents growing up. Can you offer any suggestions? Still Want to Ride

Hey...Motorcycles aren’t for everyone. I think only about ten percent of the population have the mind set and skills needed to safely a operate a motorcycle on the streets. Having said that there are many people riding that shouldn’t be. Maybe your unwarranted fear places you in that category. But if you are uncertain might I suggest that you go to a controlled environment such as a school parking lot (they are usually empty on the weekend) and diligently practice using your front brake. If you cannot overcome that fear please give up the motorcycle dream. In reality your front brake is of the utmost importance, I seldom use my rear brake other than to control my motorcycle in curves or in emergencies. If you do overcome that fear go take that course again, they usually offer a discount to previous students. There is no shame in failing, the only shame is in giving up. Best of luck overcoming your phobia. ~Dr. Dilligaf

beer or have dinner but my head doesn’t start to clear or worries fall away on a four mile ride to the Dew Drop Inn. I’ve recently been dealing with high blood pressure brought on by stress. I need at least a good thirty minute run to get that pressure to start falling. My suggestion is to join some local biker groups on social media and start attending some of the riding opportunities that are availed to us in the wonderful state of South Carolina. I admin one called Bikers and Riders and am a member of a group called South Carolina Motorcycle Riders. In addition we always have a calendar of events included in our monthly publication. I promise you that once you start joining some of these rides that husband of yours will follow. And just maybe some of your friends as well. PS. If your husband doesn’t start to follow you I promise you someone will. ~Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Diligaf is meant for entertainment only! The views and opinions expressed in the articles are not meant to offend anyone or group. If you have been offended, understand; that is not our objective. Thank you thick skin readers and for those other readers; the Chrome Crew offers FREE hugs! Send in YOUR Questions for Dr. Dilligaf to: carolinachrome@yahoo.com.

Dr. Dilligaf, I am a new solo female rider who just passed the rider’s course a couple of months ago. I am excited, but it seems as though all of my friends and my husband want to do is bar hop. What’s the best way to get seat time on the bike so that I’m more comfortable riding on the road? Sincerely, Solo Rider on the Coast

Dear Solo, I’m not used to Solo and “my husband” being mentioned in the same letter but that’s none of my business. I guess the point is that you are riding your own bike. Congratulations on taking and passing the test. I believe everyone could probably benefit from either the new riders course or an advanced course. No on has ever died from having too much knowledge that I can remember. I, like you, am often somewhat dismayed when other riders express a desire to “get some wind time before they lose their sanity” only to mean I want to ride to a bar. That’s not wind time that’s stool time. Who wants to clear their head with alcohol? If that’s what you want, fine but don’t call it wind time. Call it psychotherapy not cycletherapy. Now I’m not opposed to someone riding to get a

“STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES” Back in the early 1980s, when I was still a scrapping young man, my tolerance for pain was much higher than it is today. In addition, my propensity for risk taking in the name of fun and adventure knew little or no boundaries. My brother John and I were always in search of the next adrenaline rush. We stood on the seats of our motorcycles, sword fought with electric hot sticks, and shot arrows at each other while trying to catch them.

Knowing I could not help him, I focused on my own problem. How do I stop! I couldn’t very well slam my bare feet onto the ground, and there was no jumping off or I would wind up lying next to John! I decided to ride it out. After my skateboard hit the grass, I tried to leap over the chain. I didn’t make it. My shins hung that chain and suddenly I was catapulted forward into the field and went tumbling across the lawn! Once I came to a stop, I raised my head and spit out a clump of grass. I was hurting but thankful I had not slid down the pavement as John had.

Having said that, on one particular occasion, my brother John and I were visiting a friend who was just as daredevilish as we As I sat up and checked to make sure everything worked propwere. A Bikini Bike Wash & More By Wally Wersching

I had plans for Saturday July 3rd. The Harley-Davidson dealership in Greenville, SC was holding a “Bikini Bike Wash” from noon until 4:00PM. I got on I85 heading to Greenville. Traffic wasn’t too bad for a Saturday morning. I exited at Pelham Road, and turned left. Then at the second light, I turned right. That road took me all the way to the dealership. This route is a lot easier than going to Woodruff Road with all the traffic. I parked “Miss Vickie” with all the Harleys in the lot. Then I walked over to where the bikini clad young ladies were washing motorcycles. They were just finishing a black bike when I walked up to their tent. Later, a photographer had them pose with the bike and the biker. I took a shot of them with the bike.

Later, they brought out four coolers filled with beer and soft drinks. That ice cold Pepsi really tasted good! As I walked around, I could see the bikers having fun talking and laughing as they watched the young ladies washing the bikes. Some were enjoying the BBQ Ribs and pulled pork sandwiches while drinking the free beer. Some were coming out of the dealership carrying bags with stuff they bought. It looked like everyone was having fun. I headed home about 12:30. I backtracked to I85 and even though there was heavier traffic, it wasn’t too congested. There was a fender-bender in the left lane but we passed it before the police and fire trucks got there to block the road. I exited at Rt 105 and followed the back roads home. After I got home, we went out to eat at our favorite Mexican restaurant – Mi Pueblitos in Shelby. The food was delicious. It was a very interesting way to spend a Saturday.

They weren’t charging anything for washing the bikes – only working for tips. I watched them as they washed the bikes. They did a pretty good job washing those hot bikes which is not the way bikes should be washed. They should be cold, but that would be hard to do when the bikes are ridden to their tent. A tent was set up for food. Tom’s BBQ from Greenville was there with their grill cooking pulled pork, baked beans, and ribs. They sure smelled good as they were cooking. There was another tent set up for the Hell’s Angels. They were selling “SYL 81” clothing officially licensed by the Hell’s Angels MC. Purchasing their gear supports the Hell’s Angels life style and culture.

What Is a Sissy Bar?

Origins & Uses of the Not-Sissy Bar

bike, it’s a good idea to have an additional handhold or back support to keep them comfortable and secure in transit to your destination. Sissy bars with medium to tall height will allow your passenger to lean back during the ride. Depending on the model you select, some sissy bars also feature a leather back pad for additional comfort and plush. If you choose a shorter sissy bar, you might have a handhold for your passenger but not much else. It is also worth noting that specific state laws mandate particular a particular height or design for sissy bars that riders use, so look into your local regulations before you select your device.

What’s In a Name? Also known as a sister bar, a sissy bar is a backrest at the back of your bike that supports the passenger or rider. The sissy bar enables you or your passenger to recline as you ride for enhanced comfort and back support. A motorcycle sissy bar typically connects to the back fender struts. Some sissy bars feature leather pads, and others come without that extra support. You can also use a sissy bar to support your essential gear like your helmet or backpack. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, sissy bars became widely popular with the custom bike and chopper enthusiasts. It was always designed as a backrest for passengers but was also a preferred accessory for its stylistic elements. The original sissy bar that had its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s was considerably smaller than the modern version, and as commonly found on wheelie bikes like the Raleigh Chopper and Schwinn Sting-Ray. The backrest was not only functional but allowed the passenger ample support to lean on and hold onto besides grabbing hold of the rider. The motorcycles of today have modified the sissy bar to provide increased support and less of a bar. Cruiser motorcycles typically have the sissy bar secured on the fender struts with a foam pad and chrome-plated steel design. Touring motorcycles frequently have far shorter and simpler sissy bars affixed to the top box. How Much Do Sissy Bars Cost? You’re looking at anywhere from roughly $50 to upwards of a $100 for a quality powersports sissy bar. Sissy Bars Support People When you decide to transport a passenger on your

Sissy Bars Secure the Fender to Your Bike’s Frame Sissy bars can be an invaluable accessory for both style and functionality, whether you have a -wheeler or a 3 wheel motorcycle, prefer used motorcycles or new. The first and primary use of a sissy bar is to secure the finder to the frame of your bike. The original sissy bars weren’t much more than a fender strut required to support the rear fender. Those old bikes had a bent piece of metal or strut linking the fender to the frame — and that was about it. The sissy bars of today have the same purpose of securing your motorcycles fender to the structure, but manufacturers have greatly improved on the original models, extending the struts to afford them heightened practical and stylistic components. Sissy Bars are Fantastic for Storage Another valuable use for a sissy bar is to store your gear and any other cargo you like to take on the road with you. With a sissy bar, you can mount your load with ease and stow it all away securely without needing to worry about them coming loose on a windy road. Extended sissy bars mean you can carry more at once and stack up your gear to keep things narrow in the bag. If you like to hit the road often with your motorcycle, you might find that sissy bar makes carrying your duffle way more manageable than before.
