DODGE TOMAHAWK –

TOP SPEED: 420 MPH

The Dodge Tomahawk, which can reach speeds of 420 miles per hour while maintaining aerodynamics, resistance, and stability, takes the title of fastest motorcycle in the world. Dodge press releases and spokespeople gave various hypothetical top speeds ranging from 300 mph to as high as 420 mph, which analysts thought were probably calculated with horsepower and final drive ratio alone, without accounting for drag, rolling resistance, and stability. These estimates, and the more conservative 250 mph a designer suggested could be possible, were debunked as implausible, or physically impossible, by the motorcycling and automotive media. No independent road tests of the Tomahawk have ever been published, and the company said that in internal testing it was never ridden above 100 mph.The Tomahawk was sold through the Neiman Marcus catalog at a price of US$555,000, and as many as nine are thought to have been have sold. As they were not street legal, Dodge said the reproductions were "automotive sculpture", "intended for display only" not fully operational. www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Tomahawk

The Battle of Cowpens Anniversary

Last weekend, January 14th and 15th, was the 242nd Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens which happened during the Revolutionary War after the Battle of Kings Mountain. On January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan led his outnumbered troops against Banastre Tarelton’s British troops. It was another victory for the Americans, and helped turn the tide of war in our favor. The last battle of the movie “The Patriot” was loosely based on the Battle of Cowpens. The anniversary celebration was held on both Saturday and Sunday. There were encampments of Revolutionary War re-enactors who demonstrated musket firings along with all forms of 18th century life which were exhibited by very knowledgeable reenactors while they were all wearing authentic uniforms, and civilian garb. The reenactors are like real-life history teachers. They do so much research about their roles that they know more than most history teachers in schools. They actually live the life which gives them an insight that only being there could do.

Many different free activities were scheduled for the two days including battlefield walks, 18th century Music - Bafford and Bell: Music from the Backcountry, weapons firing demonstrations, cavalry demonstrations, and much more. Every hour they would show the movie about the battle in the museum. Masks must be worn inside the museum. It would be like a two-day class in the history of the Battle of Cowpens. I decided to go on Sunday which was a bright, sunny day. The temp when I left home was still around 30 degrees. The high for later in the afternoon was to be in the mid-50’s. When I arrived at the Cowpens Battlefield (near Chesnee, SC), it was 10:30AM. I was guided to a great spot in the parking lot near the main building by the South Carolina State Guardsmen who were directing traffic. The first group I met was from the Overmountain Victory Trail Association. The OVTA wants to tell the story of the Overmountain Men and the Battle of Kings Mountain, so that it is never forgotten. Go to their website for a complete story of how they came over the mountain to defeat the British at the Battle of Kings Mountain.

12 WWW.CHROMESC.COM

The air was filled with wood smoke from the camp fires as the re-enactors cooked breakfast, and tried to stay warm. I walked into the encampment taking pictures of the people getting ready for the long afternoon.

I met Lamar, one of the rangers from the Kings Mountain National Battlefield who is also a reenactor. He was acting as a ranger, helping the spectators go from place to place for the special programs

Many of the people tried to stay warm with blankets wrapped around them –sitting around the fire. As I was walking in the sun, I was almost comfortable with my multi layers of clothes under my Carhart jacket. I had to walk into the woods to get to the cavalry demonstration, and once out of the sun, it got colder fast. It felt like it dropped 20 degrees but there was no wind.

At 11:15, the cavalry demonstration started with the 3rd Continental Light Dragoons. There were six horsemen in the proper uniforms for their respective regiments. They talked about using the horse as a weapon while in battle against infantry. The main weapon for the cavalry soldier was the sabre. Some also had pistols. It was very interesting. They drilled making moves in the field as if they were connected as one. I could tell that it was difficult to get the horses to do what the rider wanted. A couple couldn’t keep up.

The men who talked were very interesting. I left before they were done because I wanted to get to the weapons demonstration before it started. I walked through the field to the firing range. There were men with rifles in ranks ready

to fire when I saw the lady ranger with the red powder carrying case walking toward the firing range. They cannot fire any weapon without the black powder she has in her red container.

By then there was a real crowd of people by the rope fence, and sitting on the benches. We watched as the line of riflemen marched to their places in front of the crowd. They turned an about face, and fired their flintlocks on command. It was pretty loud, and some of the children were afraid. It’s always enjoyable to see the muskets fire, and smell the burnt black powder as the smoke drifts over the spectators.

I saw that there were two cannons but they were to be fired later in the afternoon. One I had seen fire many times but the other was a howitzer (short barrel cannon).

While walking around the encampment talking with the re-enactors, I learned that they came from all over the east coast to participate in the activities. One man I met was from the same small suburb of Chicago as I was but now living in Gastonia, NC. We talked for a while about living in Villa Park, Illinois. Hopefully, I’ll meet him again at another reenactment.

Another man was dressed as a surgeon. He had all the medicines and tools from the era. Some of the tools looked very barbaric but it was all they had at the time, and he said that the mortality rate was very good during the Revolutionary War.

I left about noon. I cannot wait until next year to visit the battlefield celebration again. I never know what I’ll see, or who I’ll meet. It’s always very educational, and interesting.

FLHFB Electra Glide may be Harley-Davidson's 2023

Icon model

New for 2023 is a model designated as the “FLHFB”. The model code was previously used in the ’60s for the FLHFB Electra Glide, which makes us suspect that it will be 2023’s addition to Harley-Davidson’s Icon lineup. The 1965 Electra Glide was one of the last Harley-Davidson models to use the Panhead engine, but the first with electric start.

Honda Reveals First Look Of Electric Motorcycle – With A Parade Float

134th Rose Parade took place January 2, 2023.

Honda released another glimpse of a future electric motorcycle in, of all places, a rendering of its float for the 2023 Rose Parade.

As the presenting sponsor for the 13th time, Honda will once more be the lead float in the Rose Parade. This year’s float, called “Forever Determined,” is part of an ongoing brand marketing campaign promoting the company’s initiatives including its plans for electrification. Honda says it’s pursuing a goal for carbon neutrality by 2050, and having North American vehicle sales be 100% electric by 2040. The float shows several Honda vehicles, including the all-electric Prologue SUV, the Acura ARX-06 hybrid race car, a Hondajet Elite II plane, and a prototype Honda eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft). Also nestled in there is what is simply described as “a Honda electric motorcycle”.The rendering shows a naked motorcycle that looks looks very similar to the Honda CB500F, but with a large module that presumably houses the batteries and electric motor in place of the engine.

Triumph

Unveils

The 10Bike Chrome Collection

This homage to the past will be available for one year only. The Chrome line is for the 2023 model year. As the name implies, the Chrome family of motorcycles features a distinct design trait – chrome detailing performed in-house with a level of detailing that matches jewelry standards. In fact, Triumph estimates each of the Chrome edition motorcycles requires five additional hours of craftsmanship per bike, with up to three of those hours dedicated just to polishing the tank (a normal tank usually takes about 20 minutes).

COMPASSION Devotional

Every year, a group of 50 to 75 riders bundle up, saddle up, and brave the cold for a 50-mile journey to Anderson South Carolina for our annual New Year’s Day Ride. Various clubs and independent riders join us as we ride, sit down for a time of fun and fellowship, and share a meal of hot wings to celebrate the dawn of a new year.

This year, with my stepson riding his bike for the first time, one of my granddaughters happily rode in the car with her mom and then met us at the restaurant. Oakleigh is a beautiful, spunky, 2yr old who melts the heart of anyone around her. While she is a little shy, she has been around motorcycles since birth and has no fear of bikes or bikers.

At the restaurant, there sits one of those machines where you grab a joystick and try to drop a claw onto a ten-cent stuffed animal, which costs and arm and a leg to actually get one. Oakleigh saw it as soon as she walked in…

While we were waiting on our food, her dad went over and wasted $10 trying to get her anything he could, but he failed. Then, she looks up at me and says, “Pop-Pop, come on!”

Can’t say no, so here I go!

After a few tries, and another seven or eight dollars, I finally won some kind of stuffed creature that made her happy. She wrapped her arms around it and grinned, then trotted off to show her mom and dad. I was ecstatic! I stuck my chest out like I had won some great victory and strutted back to the table.

After what seemed to be less than ten seconds, she handed her mom the toy, grabbed my finger, and said again, “Pop-Pop, come on!” Apparently, she didn’t think she was done yet. I mean, that glass box was FULL of those things, and she wanted more!

Before I had the chance, bikers started forking out dollar bills! Oakleigh’s dad, complete with a handful of cash, walked her back to the machine. A few minutes later, here she came, smiling from ear to ear, with an armful of stuffed toys that had probably cost over fifty bucks.

There is nothing like a small child to make tough, grown men fall all over themselves and hand out cash.

This is an example of compassion…

In 2015, I was with over a hundred bikers who rode into Charleston, South Carolina to attend a church service at Mother Emmanuel just a month after Dylan Roof killed some of their members. When hundreds of motorcycles show up every year at Richard M Campbell Veterans Home, I see the faces of old soldiers who appreciate our gesture. When bikers raised tens of thousands of dollars for a brother of mine who is suffering from cancer, I felt the love.

Having been a part of the biker community for most of my life, I can attest there are few more pure examples of unregulated, unbiased compassion for other people than exists in the heart of the American biker. They will give their last dollar, donate their time, and do anything necessary to assist those in need.

This too, is an example of compassion…

Jesus was a man of compassion. He reached out to the downtrodden, diseased, and ostracized. He ate with criminals and prostitutes, fed the poor, and healed the sick. Jesus gave of his time, talents, and possessions in order to assist those who needed it more than him. After all that, compassion was the motivating factor when he walked up the hill to the cross. He gave his life so that we could be saved.

Jesus knew that our sinful behavior would require a sacrifice and he became that sacrifice. Not because he wanted to, but because he had compassion.

Just like my granddaughter will likely remember those bikers who were kind to her, we need to also remember the Savior who died in our place long ago so that we might live. And with our lives, we should honor his sacrifice.

1 Peter 3:8-9 NIV Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

Ride on and stay safe, Dennis Reynolds Mideast Regional Elder Bikers for Christ M/M

Motorcycle Law Group

Yearly Bike Giveaway

Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group has always given back to our riding community, and a huge part of that is the yearly Motorcycle Giveaway. Each year from October 15th to the following October 15th, when you see us out at events, you can register for our FREE Motorcycle Giveaway.

On November 1st of each year, we draw one winner from all the registrations that we receive throughout the year. All the winner must do is insure the bike. Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group pays the tax, title, and tags. We even deliver the bike. Not to sound like a cliché, but we really do come to you. We make sure that we choose different brands and dealerships each year so that everyone has a chance to win their dream bike. We like to make sure that we show our local dealerships that we support them as well. That is why we always purchase a bike from a dealership in one of our service states. We believe that we should support those who support others in our communities.

The 2022 giveaway bike was a brand-new Indian Scout in Black Metallic paint with chrome trim work. You know the old saying about chrome, so we won’t go there. It has an 1133cc liquid cooled v-twin with 100 HP and six speed transmission. This little baby has some get up and go along with great styling from an iconic motorcycle brand.

November 18, 2022, brought a chilly but clear Carolina day, and our founder, Tom McGrath, met up with attorney Daisha Schwear and South Carolina event coordinator Jay Wright to deliver the bike. South Carolina biker, Jennifer Bell, was the lucky winner for 2022. Jennifer is a regular at the Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group sponsored bike nights at Harley Davidson of Greenville. The 2022 Indian Scout is Jennifer’s first bike. Don’t misunderstand, Jennifer is no stranger to riding. Now though, she won’t be riding on the back of someone else’s bike. We wish Jennifer many, many miles of safe and happy riding! Look for her at next year’s bike nights on that beautiful Indian Scout. 2023 is off to a great start already! Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group will be revealing the 2023 giveaway bike at their booth during the Full Throttle Custom bike show in Greensboro, NC on January 14, 2023. Make sure that you stop in and see the new bike, and while you are there, register to win it. Who knows, you may be the next Jennifer Bell.
