RampsForRiders

Without a doubt riding a motorcycle is an exhilarating experience, but it does come with its share of risks. We as riders know all too well about the inattentive and distracted driving that occurs every second of every day here in South Carolina. We as riders constantly need to keep our heads on a swivel and literally ride for our life. However, sometimes the motorcyclist, even with all due care, training, and awareness, is helpless when a distracted driver enters their path at the very last moment. Just such an instance is how I met Thomas Crowder.

Thomas had a vehicle pull in front of him at the last moment resulting in a very serious motorcycle vs fourwheeled motor vehicle collision. The

resulting injuries left Thomas with life-altering injuries. He was wheelchair bound and walker assisted for over a year and, as such, required a ramp to assist him in and out of his home. Thankfully, he had the knowledge and support to have just such a ramp constructed and temporarily attached to his home. When he finally recovered to the extent that he no longer required the ramp to access his home, he called me and offered to donate the ramp to the next rider that needed it.

I accepted it and had it trailered to a secure place knowing that all too soon it would be needed. Unfortunately, I was correct.

Some months later, I met Kevin Douglas in his hospital room after he had been involved in a motorcycle vs four-wheeled vehicle collision that resulted in the amputation of his left leg. Upon discharge from the hospital, he required a ramp to be able enter and exit his home. I informed him that Thomas had donated a ramp that was trailer-ready and could be attached with just a few modifications. Kevin’s RC transported and installed the ramp at his home and he is still able to use it to this day.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how Ramps for Riders came about. I spoke with Thomas and Kevin and they agreed we should start a nonprofit to build ramps that are readily available for transport to the home of riders in need.

We have done just that!

Ramps for Riders is now a nonprofit corporation here in South Carolina with Federal 501(C)(3) status pending. We provide ramps and similar resources to mobility impaired riders here in South Carolina completely free of charge. We have volunteers that do everything from assisting to securing supplies, building the ramps, transporting the ramps, installing the ramps, and even volunteers that provide food and beverages to the other volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, learn more about our organization, or know of a rider in need please contact us at (803)-3731210 additionally you can email us at Katie@FullerLawForRiders.com or Chad@FullerLawForRiders.com.

Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Dilligaf

DR. Dilligaf,

Do NOT read if easily offended!

My aunt who works as a nurse in the ER always says the same thing when I ride over to see her. I can hear her now. “Oh, are you still riding that thing? Do you know what we call those things at work?” Yep, You guessed what she’s going to say next. “We call them donor cycles” Never heard that before, right? She continues. “They’re so dangerous, every rider that I see is either dead or injured” What can I say to her to keep her mouth shut about my choice to ride a motorcycle?

Signed,

Tired of Hearing It

Tired of Hearing It.

I used to ride a motorcycle to work at the ER. When I walked in to work people just shook their heads. Over 45 years later I’m stll riding and I still hear it. Coincidentally, I am an organ donor and a lifetime blood donor. But after 49 years and 11 months of ridng a bike I might venture to say those organs might be a bit worn out by the time some one gets them.

I know from working in the ER that are many things people do that are dangerous and they do them anyway. I can’t argue that riding a motorcycle isn’t dangerous but don’t single us out. What about cars, skateboards, bicycles, sex toys, scissors and needles.

I understand that it might just be about perspective. People often see the same things in differenct ways.

I was out with a dating couple, who I am Friends with.

When he stepped away to the men’s room she confided in me that he was possibly “the One”. She further intimated that they had grown so close that she had begun to be able to finish his thoughts and sentences. He returned and we ended that conversation.

Minutes later she excused herself and he and I started talking. He quickly confided in me that he was about to break up with his date. Surprised I asked “Why, she seems to really be getting close to you”? He responded “Dude, I can’t even finish a thought or a sentence without that woman interrupting me”.

So, there you see, it’s all about perspective and perception. And a person’s perception is their reallity.

As far as what you can say to discourage her I would probably just say “Thanks for your concern KAREN”.

FAITH IN ACTION

Early on a Sunday morning, I climbed out of bed to a torrential rainstorm. After a half hour or so, with a fresh cup of coffee in my hand, I walked out onto my porch.

I had been invited to a benefit run and to be honest, I decided against going. Why should I put myself out? There will be other people there and I won’t be missed. I don’t feel like spending all day in the cold and rain. It was warm and dry at the house, the coffee was hot, and I could spend the day with my family watching a movie or two.

As I sat in front of the television waiting for my family to get ready for church, I looked over at the bag of items I had purchased with the intent that they be delivered on the run that day. Begrudgingly, I stood up and pulled my rainsuit on, grabbed the fairly large bag of soaps, lotions, and a stocking cap, and walked out to my storage building where I placed the items in my saddlebag. I returned to the house and informed my family that I would meet them at church, as I would be heading out into this monsoon on my bike and attending the run after the worship service was over.

After church, I met Bub Lollis and a group of riders at the now demolished Greenwood Civic Center. By this point the rain was pouring. I wanted to drop my bag of stuff with another rider and go home, but pride would not let me… Pride sucks!!

When I heard a horn blow, we all saddled up and rode toward Clinton South Carolina.

Upon arriving to the parking lot of a small shopping center, we joined at least a couple of hundred other riders. It seemed we were not the only fools who had braved the weather. As the water invaded my rain gear and was now trickling down my back, I remember thinking how we all had to be gluttons for punishment.

After a half hour or so the rain slowed to a slight drizzle and left us with a dark, overcast sky. The horn blew once again, we saddled up as a group, and headed down the street towards “Whitten Village” as it was known at the time.

I will forever remember what I saw that day. People in wheelchairs, some strapped to beds, and others on walkers all pushed out to the street so they could watch as we passed. Protective helmets laying on pillows were rocking side to side as those wearing them shouted their approval. Tears rolled down faces as crippled hands were raised in excitement at the sights and sounds of motorcycles blowing horns and gunning their engines.

Before my first Whitten Center Run was finished, before I was halfway through the campus, before I even made it past the first couple of buildings, tears were filling my eyes.

I finally understood…

This is not just a run; this is a community effort to bring joy to a special group of people. People who will NEVER have the opportunity to physically pay you back, but who bless you more than you can imagine just by the smiles on their faces.

Thank you Bub Lollis for starting this run and inviting me to attend so many years ago. Thank you to James, Coleton, and the folks who continue the tradition and dedicate themselves to planning and coordinating this event. Thanks also to all the clubs, ministries, and all the rest of the men and women who have not only participated over the years but who keep it going… It is ALWAYS an immense blessing!

There are many places in scripture where we are called to reach out to and assist those less fortunate, and the motorcycle community does an awesome job of leading by example. Still, there are times when we are too busy, the weather doesn’t cooperate, or we are just plain tired. Many times our schedule truly doesn’t work out, but other times, me included, we just don’t feel like it.

Remember, Jesus died for us. The least we can do is ride our bikes to help those who are less fortunate when we have the ability to do so. Faith without action is dead!

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Ride on and stay safe, Dennis Reynolds

The 6th Annual Tommy Vickers Dice Run

Knights of Christ Motorcycle Ministry. Before long a large group of his ministry rode in, and parked alongside his bike. They seem like a very friendly group.

It had turned into a great day for a ride. The sun was shining but it was a little windy which should not bother a heavy bike. The lighter bikes would be blown all over the road, especially when it’s a cross wind.

Later Travis from “Wicked Wrench” walked up. I hadn’t seen him in a while. It was good to see him again. We talked about upcoming events in the Spartanburg area.

The 6th Annual Tommy Vickers Dice Run was held at Red’s Watering Hole at 111 Mill Street in Gaffney, SC on Saturday, April 1st. This year the proceeds went to Wayne Smalley who needs a kidney transplant.

I arrived at Red’s at about 10:15 after attending the CMA Diaper Run in Gaffney. The rain had stopped, and the sky was clearing. There were only a couple bikes parked out front. I went to the registration table, and placed a stack of magazines on the table after I gave my donation. I wasn’t going on the run but I gave a donation anyway. Wayne could use all the help we can give.

For the $20.00 registration fee, a rider rides to all the stops, and has a meal afterwards. The ride’s first stop was the Union County Elks Lodge in Union, SC, then on to Wingz Sports Bar in Union, SC, from there, it’s on to Jake’s Place in Jonesville, SC. The Hideout Bar and Grill in Spartanburg was the next stop. The fifth stop was the Sandra G Saloon in Gaffney, and finally ending up back at Red’s Watering Hole in Gaffney where they will have live music stating at 4:00PM by “Rocky Yelton and the Hired Guns”. It sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I walked around looking for the manager. I met her a few years back, and she always has a big smile on her face. I found her sitting at one of the tables in the bar, and we talked for a while.

I went back outside to see the bikers roll in, and I met “Squid” – a friend who I hadn’t seen in a couple years. He was there with his young lady “Punkin”. We all talked for a while. He is a member of the

The flyer said that the first bikes would leave Red’s at noon. It was 12:20, and it was obvious that they weren’t going to leave for a while. Bikers were still rolling in, and had to register. I had other places to be so I left at 12:30 heading north on Rt 18 toward Shelby. I will keep an eye on Red’s Facebook page for any upcoming events.
