NWSC ABATE Chapter Spring Scrabble Run By Wally Wersching
On Saturday June 18th, I was looking for somewhere to go. I learned that there was going to be a “Scrabble Run” starting at the Wicked Wrench Motorcycle Company in Spartanburg, SC. I decided to ride down. I left home about 9:00AM heading to uptown Shelby. I parked “Miss Vickie” across the street from the LillyBean Coffee Shop. I usually visit with members of the Broad River European Motor Club. They meet there every Saturday to talk cars, and other stuff. They like to drive their old British cars. They look great in the morning sun. I didn’t stay long because I was riding to the Wicked Wrench. I left at about 9:30AM. I rode south on Rt 18, and turned right onto I85. I arrived at the Wicked Wrench at about 10:00AM. The NWSC Chapter of ABATE of South Carolina held their Annual Spring Scrabble Run. I had never heard of a Scrabble Run before so I decided to see what it was about. It’s the same as a poker run but instead of drawing a card at every stop, you draw a couple scrabble tiles. At the end, the tiles are put together to form words, and the word with the highest total wins the money. After talking with the ABATE members, I learned that there are some very interesting words at the end – many of them made up with the letters they have but not real English language words. It sounds like a lot of fun! The run started at Wicked Wrench, and then they rode to C&C Thunder in Cowpens. They were a little concerned about going there. The
town of Cowpens was holding a parade, and the 200 plus bikes in the parade would end up at C&C Thunder. The Scrabble Run should be there and gone before all the traffic from the parade. That was the plan. After leaving C&C Thunder, they would head to Grill 221 in Roebuck, SC. After drawing their tiles, they would head to Grill 295 in Spartanburg, SC. From there, they would head to the Lake Bowen Country Club in Inman, SC for the final draw, and awards. The members of the ABATE were very friendly, and posed for as group picture. They were all smiles – ready for an eventful run. A young man and his girlfriend rode in on a beautiful Victory Cross Country. I had to walk over and talk with him about his Victory. He has a couple other Victory motorcycles at home too. Then there was a brief meeting about the run and people started to gather in small groups. The paper given to everybody when they registered had explicit directions to each of the subsequent stops. It appeared that the route was very well planned. As I was waiting for the groups to leave, I watched as a young man rode in on an “Old School” chopper. It was a Shovelhead Harley hardtail with an extended springer front end, “Ape Hangers”, and no front brake. Back in the day, I owned a hardtail Harley but I had a front brake. It was all I could do to stop that old bike. The back wheel would lock up, and I’d be all over the road before it would stop. It is very dangerous! Before long, the small groups started to leave. I watched as a few left then I left heading home the long way north on Rt 221 to Rt 11, then Rt 221A. It was a very pleasant ride home. Afterwards, Cindy and I went out for a delicious lunch at Mi Pueblitos Mexican restaurant. PICTURES Continued Page 9

“If you aim at nothing you will hit it every time” Zig Ziglar: One of my favorite quotes and especially as it pertains to my life for sure. So what does this have to do with the Legislative Coordinator article? Well everything. I wanted to take a break from bill numbers and the why’s or what’s. The reason we have been so successful is because we have targets that we work every single month. Now I didn’t say every single session or every single committee meeting. We don’t work on an issue part time, it’s all the time. So if you as a member are feeling like you personally are working on nothing shoot me an email and let me give you something to aim for! Legislative Meetings and “Our Lives Are Worth More Than A Few Points: I cannot stress enough the open door you have, all you need to do is to invite us to come to your chapter. We still have the rest of this year to break some bread and meet. All we need is the invite! The Journey Of Garry Thomas & Dave Barr Garry Thomas wrote me an email to give a little background to his journey with Dave Barr...
~I have known Dave Barr since 1977 and bought my first Harley from him. We lost touch in 1981 as his mother told me he was injured in combat and she didn't think he was going to make it. I found Dave again at a HOG rally in Greenville SC and we have stayed in contact since then. WWW.CHROMESC.COM
That is when he decided he would ride around the world on a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. After 82,000 miles he accomplished this feat and has devoted his life to helping Vets. Dave has written books about his military years and about his ride around the world. You can read more about Dave at davebarr1972.com and the patriotexpressfoundation.org. I have attached a flyer for this years benefit and some pictures of Dave.

I helped at a couple of the Patriot Express Foundation Benefits in Safety Harbor FL and then in 2018 decided to host our own Benefit in Spartanburg SC. The next 3 years I put the Benefits together from the West coast of the USA and then would ride across country the first of August to complete plans. Dave Barr decided after recovering from his injuries that he wanted to help Veterans and their families and wanted to do something to let disabled Vets know they did not have to give up and could do whatever they set their mind to.

Pappy's Adventures Continue Well, it’s Spring again. The snow is just about gone and it’s going to be in the 50’s this weekend. I am going to take the Zundapp out for a ride. It’s been a long time. I just finished up a welding night job. Boom... I got $350 bucks! That’s a shit load of cash! On my way home, I saw a guy rolling out some motorcycles. Triumphs! So, I stopped to see if I could buy one! “No” He said, “It’s all or none!” So, I asked how much. $300 bucks! So, I bought them all! All 11 frames, about 18 motors, and I got 11 titles from ’51 to ’58. This guy hill climbed and flat tracked, so lots of speed. Parts took three trips in my ‘47 Ford pickup. The last trip Larry Wordinger, (the Triumph guru of the area), was there. He was pissed! But, I made a deal with Larry Wordinger.... If he helped me to get a bike running, he got the rest for helping me. I wanted to build a ‘52 for me to ride. A good deal for both of us! The motor was a hot one-750, big cylinders and a Bonneville head, twin carburetor. F**king fast. Faster than Books K model. This thing would haul ASS. Hotter than hell. Had an 18” on the back and a 21” on the front. Had a front brake, buck horns bars, and a “P- nut” tank, not a real gas tank. Sprung solo seat and a p pad., AKA a ”pile on pad” or a “p*ssy pad.” Lucus taillight, low pipes and a shorty muffler. Lots of chrome. Blue and silver paint job. Cliff Blojett painted it. It was the fastest bike in the bunch, but I lived through it somehow! “Don’t like pain.” This is going to be one hell of a summer! I got Sundays off, so look out, Saturday nights! Still had to be in by midnight and I was never late. My dad was tough on us, but he loved us kids and I learned a lot from him. He had a ’29 JD “H” when mom and him started dating in the 1930’s. I came from good stock!
16
Now, I knew if I got busted doing something dumb that would be the end of my riding until I was 16. That would suck. Played it cool, got two years to go and we all had good reputations. No big city bullshit. Just cool bikes and hot rods, my current side car looks like a ’33 Ford Roadster! I learned a long time ago that it’s never too late to have a second childhood! The Triumph was that summer. We all went to the Martin Drag Strip a lot. Book was building a 1957 Sportster called King Kong, 1200 and a 2-speed tranny. I got to meet Pete Hill that summer. I now am friends with him some 60 years later. He is helping me on a ‘45 project. got ahead of myself there. Sorry about that! Anyway, I had two close calls that summer. Left turn in front of me; the front brakes save that one and the next one too. Well, to say the least, this has started out to be a super summer! I got "sweety,” My mom made her a bikini!. The ocean has nothing on Lake Michigan! Plus, just on the other side is Milwaukee, WI. You can almost smell the Harley 105. “That’s Panhead Oil!” 8 of us took the ferry boat from Ludington to Milwaukee to go to the Harley factory! Eight bucks, round trip! Hope to see you at bike night! Ride Safe!
~Pappy

A Matter Of Fact...
In 1887, Yamaha started as a piano manufacturer, but today is a multinational conglomerate that still produces musical instruments. They have added boats, car engines, swimming pools, industrial robots, wheelchairs, RVs, electronics, and golf carts, and motorcycles.

Likeminded Community Monthly Devotional
Roughly 40 years ago, I bought my first street bike from Performance Cycle. It was a brand new 550 Yamaha Maxim with less than 20 miles on it. She was absolutely beautiful... A slick black four-cylinder street fighter that was capable of wheelies from red light to red light on main street with minimal effort. That bike opened up a whole new world for me. I learned to stand on the seat, smoke the rear wheel, shift gears with the front tire in the air, and drag the pegs through hairpin turns. When I would twist that throttle, it seemed my worries and cares melted away into an endless black highway... I still get that feeing today. Seeing my new bike, my brother John and my friend Mark Bennett both bought Maxim 550 motorcycles from Performance Cycle. Mine was worn out from abuse when I sold it years later, John wrecked his where Laurel Rd runs into Airport Rd winding up in the hospital broken leg that would require pins and a rod, and I have no clue what happened to Mark's silver 550. Over the years, I made more purchases from our local motorcycle shop, and they were all great motorcycles as well. I would eventually buy a touring Kawasaki Voyager, a Yamaha Road Star cruiser, and TONS of accessories from Keith Darby and crew. I also bought tour bags, rain suits, cold weather gear, riding gloves, all my oil and filters, batteries, t-shirts, pegs, grips, crash bars, and so much more... Still, that wasn't the main reason I visited the shop on a weekly basis. It was the atmosphere... The cool thing was that no matter how busy Keith and company were, I could always just stop in for a friendly conversation about the latest in motorcycle technology, motorcycle community happenings, or our most recent ride. Many times, I would walk in, and Keith would hand me something that happened to fit my bike, and he would bless me with it for free. Sharing a cup of coffee, a doughnut, or a pack of crackers, we 18
could solve the problems of society in an hour or less... It was a refuge where the troubles of the world would just fade away. They were like family. Church is more like that motorcycle shop than you can imagine. When I walk through the doors of my church, I feel as if I am in a sanctuary far removed from the grind of day-to-day life. It is a safe-haven where I can commune with God and recognize His glory along with other Christian brothers and sisters. It is a place where I can take my struggles and be inspired while inspiring others in their own struggles. Simply put, a place for God to commune with his people. It is a family. While it is true that we can commune with God as we ride down the road, sit on a riverbank with a fishing pole, or even working in our own prayer garden, there is nothing like being in church and praising God with a community of believers. It is an amazing experience. Just as the folks at Performance Cycle enjoyed fellowship with those who were patrons of their business, God loves for us to visit his place of worship and fellowship with likeminded people. That fellowship is part of His amazing plan to grow us into who He wants us to be, and use us to grow his Kingdom “For where two or more are gathered in my name, I am there with them.” Matthew 18:20 NIV Give ‘em Heaven!
