The Wall That Heals
By: L.Z. Harrison, Jr. SC PGR & Post 6 American Legion Riders
On Veteran’s Day in 1996, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), the founders of The Wall, unveiled a halfscale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. designed to travel to communities throughout the United States. Since its dedication, The Wall That Heals has been displayed at over 600 communities, throughout the nation, spreading the Memorial’s healing legacy to millions. In 2018 an all new The Wall That Heals and mobile education center will be making stops around the country, including May 3rd to 6th in Camden, SC. There will be a motorcycle escort of the wall on the 2nd of May meeting at Thunder Tower Harley Davidson at 8:00 am with a briefing at 8:45 and departing at 9:00 with law enforcement escort. If you ever help escort the wall into your community and help set it up or visit the wall while Vietnam Veterans are there, you will quickly understand why it is the wall that heals. The Wall That Heals is escorted, set up, and attended to with the highest amount of honor and reverence, because of what it represents. The Vietnam Veterans in attendance find it as much a hallowed ground as The Vietnam Wall Memorial in Washington D.C. Many are moved to tears, some come just to be in its presence, but cannot bear getting close enough to it to actually read the names. Many volunteer to guard the wall while it is set up, accessible to the public 24 hours a day as they find this service to their brothers and sisters their way of giving back and remembering them. Regardless of how they react, they all honor the wall and when it comes to their community, they want to be a part of it. The Wall That Heals honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the 12
Vietnam War and bears the name of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. The wall is 375 feet long and 8 feet high. There are 58,318 names on the wall, which is made up of 144 panels. The entire project weighs 8,000 pounds; the heaviest panel on its own weighs 78 pounds. With the new replica’s size, visitors are able to experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a key feature of the design of The Wall in D.C. Like the original Memorial, The Wall That Heals is erected in a chevron-shape and for the first time in the history of The Wall That Heals, visitors will be able to do name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall. Through The Wall That Heals the names on the wall are returned home to communities across the country and allow Vietnam veterans and their family members who cannot make it to Washington, D.C. the opportunity to see The Wall. It also gives communities a teaching moment for younger generations on why they should honor those who have served and sacrificed so much. During its time in Camden, SC it will be visited by middle and high school students, as well as the public and several special community events happen around its display. Modern LED lighting from the top of The Wall allows the memorial to be set up 24 hours a day and provides better readability of The Wall at night. While similar lighting existed on the previous version, modern light options coupled with unique framework and design will guarantee visitors aren’t overwhelmed by the lights. The Wall That Heals is transported from community to community in a 53-foot trailer. When parked, the trailer opens with exhibits built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center telling the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the divisive era in American history. WWW.CHROMESC.COM
The mobile Education Center displays includes: digital photo displays of “Hometown Heroes” - service members whose names are on The Wall that list their home of record within the area of a visit; digital photo displays of Vietnam veterans from the local area honored through VVMF’s In Memory program which honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died as a result of their service; video displays that teach about the history and impact of The Wall and of the collection of items left¬ at The Wall in D.C.; educational exhibits told through items in the collection; a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War. The mobile Education Center is prototypical of the future Education Center at The Wall. VVMF is in the fundraising stages to build the Center that will be an interactive learning facility on the National Mall. The Education Center will feature the faces and stories of the more than 58,000 men and women on The Wall and honor America's Legacy of Service, including those serving in our nation's Armed Forces today. You can be part of The Wall That Heals visit to the local Midlands Area in May. If you can participate in the escort, everyone is invited but safety is paramount, so you must attend the safety briefing at 9:45 am on May 2, 2018. If you can’t attend the escort, then volunteer to help staffed the rotating shifts during its set up. If that is not possible, then visit the wall during its time here. As the wall is a place of reverence, everyone is asked to be considerate of the special atmosphere and to not be loud, don’t smoke around the wall and be considerate of other people in attendance.

CMA Diaper Run
about a half hour to get to the gas station. I took the back roads because they’re more fun. By Wally Wersching When I arrived, there were only a few bikers standing around talking. I was welcomed, and started talking them. As we talked, more and more bikers rode in, and parked. Some went inside to get breakfast but most just stood around sharing their adventures. Most were members of the CMA from chapters in the area but there were also people from other Biker Ministries, and there were a few like me that were not affiliated with any organization. Most of the bikes had diaper boxes strapped on the back which looked different. The brightly colored diaper boxes clashed with the black biker image. On Saturday February 24th, I awoke, ate breakfast, I met “Squid”, a Navy veteran. He was also on and then went to visit with members of the local European Car Club at LilyBean’s Coffee House. We a Destroyer but much newer than the WWII one meet there every Saturday morning to share car stories, and such. I told them that I had been invited I was on. It was interesting to talk with someone to participate in the “Warriors for Christ” chapter of who went through similar the Christian Motorcycle Association’s (CMA) Diaexperiences. He was per Run in Gaffney, SC later in the morning. They admiring “Miss Vickie” – teased me a little about the diapers and old men saying how beautiful she until I told them that the diapers would be dropped was. I’ll always talk with off to the Cherokee Pregnancy Center in Gaffney. They were all going for a good cause – that stopped people who like her. After a few minutes, a large group of bikes roared in, any further teasing. I went on the Diaper Run last spring, and thoroughly and parked. As the bikers got off their bikes, many were greeted by old friends with handshakes, and enjoyed it. I met some old friends, and made a few hugs. new ones too. Later, Roger, an The invitation said to meet at the Pilot gas station in old friend, and Gaffney. The kickstands would be up at 11:00AM for member of the the ride to the center. There also was a mention of “Warriors for a fifty mile ride afterwards if the weather was good Christ” chapter enough for a comfortable ride with a lunch stop arrived. His and afterwards. his wife’s bike were loaded with diapers which included donations from people who couldn’t make the run. We were then asked to join around for the prayer after which, the Road Captain took over, and described the route we would take to the center. It was only a few miles to the center. I stayed toward the rear of the group because I don’t like riding with a lot of people I don’t know. From LilyBeans, I went home to drop off the Miata, Within a few minutes we were rolling in the lot beand pick up “Miss Vickie”. It was cool so I dressed hind the center. After we all parked, we were invited accordingly, and left home about 9:45AM. It took to bring the diapers into the building. 26
WWW.CHROMESC.COM
Three of the ladies who worked at the center welcomed us as we put our diapers on the large table. When we were through, the table was full of diapers, and other things a baby might need. The three ladies thanked us again and again for everything. They herded us all behind the table for a group picture. There were too many of us for a single photo taken with a cell phone so she took a panoramic video of us instead. One of the cell phones sounded like a machine gun as it took pictures in rapid succession. It gave all of us a very warm feeling that we could help babies, and their mothers. We all prayed for the mothers, and the ladies prayed for us. It was a very moving moment.
We went back to the bikes where they held a “Bike Blessing” for anyone who wanted it. Many of the bike owners opted for the blessing. After saying good-by, I headed back home. When I arrived, I talked Cindy into going out to the Italian Gardens Restaurant in Boiling Springs, NC for a delicious lunch. It was a great way to enjoy a Saturday – helping people less fortunate.

“They” say...
If You Get Your Boots Wet:
You don’t need to encounter serious rain to get your boots good and wet on the inside. When you’re at home, you can just let them air out over a couple days or use one of those cool boot inserts that dries and de-funks the lining. However, when you’re out on the road for a few days, you probably don’t have the time or the space for that kind of luxury. Well, most gas stations have newspapers of some kind – be they free or for sale. Newsprint is remarkably absorbent and can be used to dry out your boots overnight. Just cram as many balled-up pieces of paper into the boot as you can. To be extra sure that the boots get dried as much as possible, change the papers a couple times, like after dinner and when you wake up in the middle of the night to pee. With a little effort, you can slip your dogs into comfy, dry boots in the morning. Newspapers can also be used as an insulating jacket liner when cold weather unexpectedly strikes. 1968 Harris-Norton 750 Boardtracker Special
About four years ago, the phone rang one Sunday afternoon. “What are you doing this afternoon? I need your truck. Found a Norton for cheap. Have you got time to go check it out?” In a few minutes, Dennis Harris from Classic Cycle was in my driveway. I remember days decades ago when finding an ugly but fixable bike like a 750 Norton was still relatively easy and affordable. Those days are harder to make in the 21st Century. On that day in 2014, we made one.
We arrived at a long-defunct, off the grid biker bar. It was at the end of the road in a neighborhood that isn’t where I would like to end up drunk, broke and not amongst friends at any 3AM. Like a feature attraction on display, we found a rusty and unoriginal but complete 1968 Norton. It even kicked over with decent compression. A very few bucks later, we rolled it into my equally rusty old truck and headed to Chesnee. On the way to the shop, we wondered if this was the same ugly, rusty Norton we hadn’t bought for $75.00 nearly 30 years ago not far from where this one was. Dennis Harris has a penchant for serious Nortons, especially P11 flattrack race bikes. This was a Commando. But he had ideas to make it special. He settled on a Boardtrack racer treatment. This included tall 21” wheels and skinny tires on both ends, which give the bike a very lean presence. Tall pipes with short megaphones sound great. The front fender went away. The rear fender is a NOS Harley Davidson Sprint part, including original an paint stripe. Yours truly did that by taking a perfect original fender, carefully blasting away the paint while using the original stripe decals as a mask and gently scotchbriting the bare metal before removing the stripe decals. Very cool stuff. A better looking Norton tank came via Ebay. The detailed but not rebuilt engine now resides in a slightly customized and powdercoated frame. The Norton quickchange rear hub and drum brake front hub were both retained. As a proper special, the tank wears a Norton-ized one-off treatment of “Harris” How does it run? Well, the original Amals were rebuilt and worked well enough for the first quick blast. The engine runs great and make plenty of power. So much power, in fact, that the NOS dirttrack Ceriani rear shocks were a little overwhelmed when Dennis grabbed a big handful and pulled a wheelie. “As soon as the front wheel came up, I felt the back tire go down and knew I cut it when it squatted down. Sure glad I didn’t drop it.” That tire had tagged a bolt when the shocks bottomed out and was split almost perfectly into two halves. “I can’t believe I only got about 2 blocks out of that brand new tire and tube.” We thought it was pretty funny. He didn’t. Continued next page 36
WWW.CHROMESC.COM
As the shocks were being replaced with brand new-looking Harley shocks we found at a thrift store, Dennis changed to a new MAP intake manifold and single Mikuni-style carb. A long morning at Ray Hollifield’s shop later, the carb was properly customized. The next day, Ray and I fitted it up on the bike as Dennis generously critiqued our work. It was a good move. “It’s an honest one kick bike now. Key off. Gas on. One kick through to prime the engine. Key on. Kick it and it starts.” No joke. He did exactly that and it does. So far, it’s proving true every time. “Now, if it would only quit being winter, I could do a little riding,” he said before finishing with “This is all the bike I need.” Anyone who knows Dennis knows that’s probably not the case. As proof, the next thing he said was “Now that the Norton is done, I going to start on my Ural. I’m going to get that sidecar going to ride this summer.” Some things never change. By Button

Did You Know: The Norton Commando was a British Norton-Villiers motorcycle with an OHV pre-unit parallel-twin engine, produced by the Norton Motorcycle company from 1967 until 1977. Initially having a nominal 750 cc displacement, actually 745 cc (45.5 cu in), in 1973 it became an 850 cc, actually 828 cc (50.5 cu in). It had a hemi-type head, similar to all OHV Norton engines since the early 1920s. ww.wikipedia.org WWW.CHROMESC.COM
