4th Annual Gathering of the Tribes

By Wally Wersching I had been planning to go to the 4th Annual Gathering of the Tribes at the Spartanburg Harley dealership last Saturday, April 7th, for quite some time. The forecast was for cool temps and rain. There were many speakers and bands scheduled to appear. The MC of the event was Mike Grubb – National President of the Hell Fighters Christian Ministry from Laurel, MS. With the inclement weather, I wasn’t sure who would be there. I awoke at about 6:30AM on Saturday morning, and looked out the window to see wet streets, and the sound of rain hitting the roof. I waited until 10:30AM before I left to go to the Gathering of the Tribes. By then, it was just drizzling. I drove south on RT 18, then southwest on I85. I stayed on I85 until I exited at Rt 221. The Harley dealership is on Sha Lane - the first right. The only car parking was a few doors down from the dealership. Luckily, it wasn’t raining very hard. I had been to the Gathering of the Tribes before, and was impressed by the number of different ministries – all with the same message: Jesus Loves Bikers Too. I knew some of my friends from the local biker ministries would be there. When I looked around, I saw a long line of tents, each of which represented a specific biker ministry or vendor. The different ministries were telling anyone who walked up about the benefits of their ministry, and their church. Most of the bikers were wearing vests with their ministry logo on the back. It was a sea of colors viewed from the back. The large stage outside looked out into a large tent so the spectators wouldn’t get wet during the event. There would be live entertainment along with people giving inspirational talks during the day. Some people were already sitting in the chairs waiting for it all to begin. It was very crowded. I stopped at a few tents to talk with some friends, and meet some of the vendors. One of the tents in front of the dealership was for the “Quilts of Valor”. The lady had two on display, and they both were beautiful. I could see that many hours of love and dedication went into making them. The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of valor. For more info, go to www.QOVF.org. It really sounds like a great way to show our thanks to all veterans who put their lives in jeopardy for us. I was surprised to see so many bikers riding in. They all had their rain suits on because it was still raining. One guy drove his 1940 Ford pick-up truck with his old Harley Sportster in the back. Instantly it was a fan favorite. The truck had just the right patina, and the bike was an old “Iron Head” Sportster too. They were to start serving free food at 11:30. It looked like they had free hot dogs with all the fixin’s. There was also a food vendor with BBQ chicken. After walking around a couple times, I walked into the dealership. It too was full of people. They had a couple custom motorcycles on display along with a photographer set up with a red backdrop, and a new Harley for photos. I didn’t ask what he was charging for a picture. It might be a remembrance of the event. I decided to head back home, but before I left the area, I stopped at Rock Bottom Distillers which is a couple doors down from the dealership. They say that they are one of the smallest distilleries in South Carolina. After I entered, I was offered a sample but declined. I don’t like to drink any alcohol while I’m riding or driving. It looked like a very interesting place. The actual still was on the right behind bars. There were rows of mason jars filled with fruit and moonshine. The fruit adds some flavor to the alcohol, and the alcohol adds a little zip to the fruit. The man said that it was the way it has been done in the mountains for generations. I could see that it was a very small distillery that was striving for high quality moonshine using only local ingredients. For more info, go to www.rockbottomdistillers.com. After talking with the man for a few minutes, I did head home. When I arrived, Cindy and I went out for a delicious lunch at our favorite restaurant. WWW.CHROMESC.COM 12

you can't take it with you when you are gone. And please don't write back month and ask about a heated seat for your Shitzu. Seriously though, if your motorcycle didn't come equipped with a hitch and instructions for pulling a trailer you shouldn't do it. Especially in the mountains. There are a few motorcycles equipped for trailering but my advise is to exercise caution in any type of bike operation because your life is at stake and in your own hands. There are very few motorcycle accidents where the rider does not contribute in some way. Trailering is not an exception. Doctor Dilligaf, Ride safe, Since you felt the need to rip me apart on my pulling a trailer in the mountains question a few Dr. Dilligaf months back. If you recall you assumed I was Dr. Dilligaf, talking about tailering bikes. Here is another chance to get it right. Everytime I see one of you. But if not just carry a hot dog bun with you of those old farts touring through the mountains pulling a trailer with all of their personal belongings and if in doubt whip it out. Longer than a bun, over 6 inches, shorter than bun, under 6 inches. Or you in tow I shake my head. They might as well save some money and kill two birds with one stone and can always ask, is it bun length? Banana Bobs Riding Wisdom For New Riders Or 100+ Mile Riders Sitting around after dinner the other night, the usual conversations began floating around. It was brought to my attention that I should share some of my experiences with the Chrome readers (apparently age gives you a wealth of stories). In this particular case I was asked to share some of my Medical Expertise, although I do not claim or pretend to be a Dr. or not at least at the level of my esteemed colleague Dr DILLIGAF) I can only relay the facts as I perceive them. Today I would like to Pontificate on the subject of ASSHOLES (now before someone gets offended I will not be calling anyone out on this in Fact I am not referring to the asshole that earned the name due to various acts of inconsideration. I am referring to the orifice the good lord gave you for among other things a safety device to keep you on your bike when things go south….such as 1: topping a hill on the interstate at your customary speed and all you see in front of you is a sea of red tail lights and stopped cars. 2: Hearing that truck tire explode just as your passing that last 18 wheeler in the convoy 3: or having that little old lady pull out of her driveway just as you are coming up on it because she is totally oblivious to you existence. Those moments Well yet again God is watching out for us bikers he created a unique reaction that is either triggered by the intensity of the moment or the mere conscious and abrupt thought OH SHIT. One or a combination of these cause a puckering of the sphincter so abrupt and strong that it causes a vacuum thus sucking a large portion of your saddle upwards securing you tightly on your seat (a similar reaction can happen in a 26

cage as well.) only later to be released so you can stand and check yourself. If you are lucky the seat is all that gets released. But that’s another story.

Years ago I had a serious and If you are ever in this situation possible life threatening mal- the following is the procedure function in my asshole (from to follow both for immediate this point own to be called rec- relief and long term solution. tum for the sake of the article First pick up 3 ripe bananas and my editor’s nerves). time you have probably give it a name I think I called mine Herbie). Be very careful not to let this peel touch your junk cause that’s just weird. Carefully put the thong on and make sure it splits the peel down the middle thus holding the peel firmly in place ( very important) At this point the woo side of nicwoo stopped me and asked what about the thong and my junk to which I replied if you are worried about that, that hemi hasn’t gotten big enough yet. Now put on the tighty whites (this part I learned the hard way normally I ride commando and upon getting off the bike at a rally well let’s just say I dropped my peel. It’s a little hard to explain why this decidedly nasty looking banana peel just slid down the back of my leg and out of my pants leg for all to see. The above process may need to be repeated over a period of days. Riding with this in place is very similar to Monkey Butt (we all can relate to that). Well this seems to have taken a bit longer then I had planned and I am running out of space so send those letters to your editor and I will explain next time how to get rid of those pesky internal ones. In closing I would like to leave you with these words If a 6’5” long in the tooth biker ever puts his arm around your shoulder and says “Hey Chiquita I feel your pain it’s going to be ok.” He is not hitting on you he just recognized a brother or sister with that walk you will have when you are currently in treatment. I have no idea why the editor wants this but Banana nut bread. By the way, so you don’t think I make this shit up go to this sight it will explain the process of Banana Peeling aswell. http://www.homeremediesforall.com/natural-remedies/ home-remedies-for-hemorrhoids.html pay close attention to number 3.

Roland Funke’s 1981 Ducati 900SSD By Button

As I walked around to the backside of the garage, the conversation went somewhat like this- “When these were new they were slow and expensive. I wanted to ride the fastest bike I could. So I wasn’t interested in a bike like this back then.” Sounds like the beginning of just another Harley article, doesn’t it? It’s not. Old friends with cool bikes are hard to beat. I met Roland one night over 20 years ago just a few miles from where we were. It was late and he was parked dark beside the road on what I quickly recognized as a bevel twin Ducati. I stopped but he didn’t need my help. He had it all under control. That pretty much sums up Roland. “Like I said, when I was younger I just wanted to go as fast as I could. Japanese bikes were the fast bikes. 82 Suzuki GS100E. Kawasaki Z1. I was drag racing in Farmington. Pro Modified. Then I moved into slalom racing with Buells. Now I do it just for fun. I’m headed to Barber in a little bit. You can rent a 1100RR and have a blast. And if anything happens, it’s a lot less expensive to wreck a rental than your own bike.” All while we talked, the Ducati commanded center stage. “I got this one in the 90’s. It came from Alabama. I found it listed in Walneck’s. You know back when it was just ads before it became a magazine.” He was talking specifics and pointing out details. “They claimed there were around 200 made but who really knows. Everything Ducati was sort of chaotic back then. These 900SSD (D for Darmah) models are different than the regular 900SS bevel twins. They had triangulated frames, which made them stronger. So racers around that time liked them better. Look at pictures of Jimmy Adamo. They said he was riding an SS frame but if you look close you’ll see it was triangulated like these SSD frames. Good stuff.” Roland continued to point out small details in the bodywork and mechanical specifics unique to a 900SSD. “It’s mostly all original paint. Only the seat pan has been repainted. A heating and air technician that was here a few years ago scratched the fairing. But I think I can carefully rub it out. The SSD also had electric start, which makes it quick to spot at a glance.” So I asked about riding this compared to other bikes. “It’s really stiff to steer with the damper and the original clip-on handlebars. You know, when you’re younger and didn’t know any better, that was just normal. Now you ride a modern bike and get on this and it’s really obvious. If someone wasn’t paying attention, they’ll go right off the road in the first corner.” We talked more about Ducatis around Spartanburg- who had or has what, which ones we missed or should have bought, which one had nitrous, what got wrecked, etc.- and about supercharged Nortons and on and on until it was time for supper. Roland fits in well with our circle of friends. He likes bikes and he’s not necessarily stuck in his ways. When someone metaphorically grows up and slows down by buying a Ducati, that’s very cool in our book. If you ride an old bike and want to see it here, call us or come by Classic Cycle in Chesnee, SC (864) 590-2141.
