In July of 2017, Joey Chastain, a Hardwood Cruiser MC member was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer on the base of the tongue. He received 35 radiation treatments and 3 large doses of chemo at MUSC in Charleston. This was over an 8 week period, in which he and his wife Terri Lynn had to pick up and leave their 3 kids. Treatment was a success. Joey went into remission. Things went back to a new normal. Then everything changed in August of 2020. He developed a small cough. After a couple of tests they discovered a lime size tumor in his upper lung. Once again they were sent back to Charleston for 6 weeks of treatment which was 30 radiation treatments, and 6 doses of 2 different chemotherapy treatments. Things were looking good through all the treatments, the scans showed the tumor was shrinking. A month after the treatments ended everything still showed the tumor was shrinking. In December, he was placed on immuno therapy. In February of 2021 he went for a scheduled pet scan as a routine checkup. It showed that the original tumor was gone, but it showed 7 new small tumors in his lung. It also showed a shadow on his brain. They scheduled a brain scan for the following week. The results were not what anyone expected. It showed 5 tumors in his brain. The largest being on his optical nerve, this tumor had started to take away Joey’s peripheral vision on the right side of both eyes. After the team of Doctors met, they decided that the best option for Joey would be to do a procedure called gamma knife. Joey was fitted with a halo which was screwed into his skull and he was bolted to a table for 4 hours, while 192 beams of radiation were shot into each tumor. He also began a regimen of chemo for his lungs. He wears a pump for 4 days every 3rd week. As of right now the brain & lung tumors are shrinking and dying. He will be going back for more scans in June. Joey's hope is that the Lord will continue to heal him and use his journey as a testimony for others. He wants other to know that you should NEVER STOP LIVING, when you stop living, your life is over, and he is going to live whether that is for 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 months 6 years or 6 decades. IN May 2021, the Hardwood Cruier Low Down Crew hosted a benefit for Joey Chastain. Together along with the support of others, Jeremy Hudson and Ashley Tumblin worked to put together a well attended and supported event. More than 155 riders signed up for the ride along with various car clubs in the Anderson, SC area. Thanks everyone for their love and prayers. Submitted By Terri Lynn Chastain Page Photos By Starla

Dr. Dilligaf

Would it be too difficult to learn to ride on a chopper style bike?

My father did construction work about 5 years ago and the guy ended up paying with his bike. It is a Big Dog Mastiff and it has been collecting dust in our garage for years. I have always wanted to ride a street bike as I’ve only ridden dirt bikes when I was young (10 years ago). Would it be to difficult to learn on this style of bike? I may just be overthinking it as it looks much more intimidating compared to a regular street bike. It is a pretty strong bike and I would more than likely be learning from zero since its been so long. -Uncertain

Dear Uncertain, Difficulty has a lot to do with the individual. Basically it’s an objective question. What is your definition of difficult? My wife says that I am difficult, but I disagree. I am going out on a limb here because you just don’t come across as the assertive type and say that for you, it would be difficult. The Big Dog Mastiff is a 117 cubic inch S&S powered bike with a raked front end and extended forks. It has a low seat height which is good for maneuverabilty, but has forward controls which limits your riding position. Considering that most new riders (you said starting from 0) typically start on a smaller engined, light weight bike; my inclination is to say no to question one. Then again you said that you rode dirt bikes some time back, did you quit because you sucked at it? Did you quit because you were scared? None of the above? This bike doesn’t compare to regular street bikes, it’s longer, heavier and has lots of torque. I know street bikes have a lot of horse power, but torque is the true measure of power. HP is how fast you hit a wall, torque is how far the wall moves. My summation is that this bike is too much for you to learn on. It would be best to trade it for something more light weight and docile. Having said that you can contact me through Carolina Chrome and we can work out a trade and put you on something to learn (or re-learn) to ride on. Dr. Dilligaf

way over in a corner while hard on the throttle the results would be 180 degrees different than if you were rolling casually down the highway, pulled in the clutch and then killed it. I have done the latter many times to listen for drive train noises or to see if the starter or ignition sytem is working. The former however is a recipe for disaster, just ask anyone who has done that sort of thing accidentally. The list of bad things that can happen is endless. From road rash to six friends steppin and fetchin. Like anything having to do with operating a motorcycle safely, knowledge of the limitations of yourself and your equipment are paramount to arriving at your destination with everything intact. Practice killing it while operating slowly in a safe environment. Understand that you can restart it either with the starter button after turning the kill switch on or by selecting the appropriate gear and releasing the clutch. If you misunderstand any of this, please take a rider’s safety course before ridng with others, especially me. Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Diligaf is meant for entertainment only! The views and opinions expressed in the articles are not meant to offend anyone or group. If you have been offended, understand; that is not our objective. Thank you thick skin readers and for those other readers; the Chrome Crew offers FREE hugs! Send in YOUR Questions for Dr. Dilligaf to: carolinachrome@yahoo.com.

I was wondering if I hit the engine kill switch while riding, can I just turn it back on and expect no mishap while coasting? -Scared to try

Dear Scared to try, Your question is subjective. If I was mean, well, wait I know I can be mean. But if I was really mean I would just answer yes. You can hit the kill switch while riding, but if you did it while leaned

“The Broken Wire”

1 Peter 5:8 tells us to be on guard because the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking who he can devour. 2 Corinthians 11:14 tells us that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Finally, Ephesians 4:27 tells us not to give the Devil even the slightest foothold on our lives.

I want to tell you a story…

A few years ago, I had a customer bring me his BMW motorcycle for repair. Just as soon as we get comfortable, let our guard down, and start thinking we have it all together, Satan will hit us with Just looking at this bike, you would have assumed there was something we don’t even recognize. absolutely nothing wrong with it. The paint was flawless, it was squeaky clean, and it had obviously been well mainIt may be that one small struggle we think we can handle… tained. When I hit the starter button, the bike fired up and ran like a champ! Not a tick or ping, it didn’t smoke, and the Just one small thing… thing purred like a kitten. And then just like that tiny little wire rendered that beautiful motorcycle useless, that one small thing we don’t even But appearances can be deceiving... notice in our lives eventually destroys everything we have…

While the motorcycle was beautiful and it always fired up on How do we beat that? How do we keep that from happening? the first try, it did have an issue. If you were riding slow and turned the handlebars to the left, the bike would suddenly First, we pray! We give those small struggles to God before shut off… EVERY TIME! they become big struggles. We ask Him daily for assistance in our decision-making process. He will never steer us Attempting to find the issue, I removed the tank, traced wrong. wiring, and checked the handlebar switches. By all appearances, everything was as it should be. Scratching my head, Second, we stay in God’s word! There is no better place to I decided to dive a little deeper. After initially removing the learn the things of God than to be in His word every day! plastic coating from the wiring harness that ran along the The Bible is God’s guidebook for life! steering neck, I had not found the issue. Upon checking each wire individually however, I located the problem. And finally, dedicate your life and everything you have There was a small red wire that looked as though nothing was wrong. It was not burned, there was no corrosion, but inside the sheath there was a break in the copper. When the bike was straight or turned right, the wire was together, but if the handlebar was turned to the left, the wire would separate. This was what had caused the bike to shut off. By all appearances, the motorcycle was in perfect condition. But something you could not even see, that would cost less than a dime to repair, caused the entire system to fail. Sometimes our lives are that way. We may have an amazing family life, wonderful friends, and a well-paying job… We may have a great car, an awesome house, and a beautiful motorcycle… We may fully believe our lives are going along smoothly and we have things under control…

to Jesus! If we are living our lives for ourselves and no one else, we will never be satisfied! But if we are living for Jesus, there is nothing He can’t handle.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” ~Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) New International Version

But then, there could be something that just isn’t right. Some small insignificant thing that we may not even notice may be sitting back and waiting to wreck our lives.

Tips to Avoid Dehydration while Riding Maintaining your hydration at an optimal level while riding allows you to make the most out of your motorcycle riding experience.

Tip #1: Plan Extra for Long-Distance Trips Are you planning a cross country or interstate motorcycle trip? Your motorcycle riding route can still be considered long-distance if you’re staying within South Carolina. The more hours you ride, the more likely it is that you could experience symptoms of dehydration. Evaluating your long-distance route for stop-off points to rest and hydrate is a great starting point. Think through time estimates for how long it’ll take to complete your long-distance journey as you can mark certain times of your ride for breaks. The thrilling nature of riding a motorcycle makes it easy to lose track of time when riding, but it’s always important to keep an eye out on the clock so you can take scheduled breaks and maintain hydration. Tip #2: Don’t Chug Water Before a Ride Downing tons of water before you ride your motorcycle won’t sufficiently prep you for your ride. Why? First, drinking tons of water before you ride your motorcycle can increase the likelihood of stomach cramping. Secondly, it takes about 30 minutes for the water to reach your muscles, so choosing to consume large quantities of water minutes before a ride may result in you being dehydrated for the early portion of the route. Instead, focus on sipping water consistently leading up to your ride to keep yourself hydrated.

Tip #3: Utilize Water-Dispensing Units Water-dispensing units are one of the best tools a motorcycle rider can use. Consider using a sustainable, insulated water bottle or a hydration pack like a Camelbak. The advantages of both allow for easy access to water during the ride either when stopping for a break or as a hands-free alternative Tip #4: Consume Some Salt Most of the body’s sweat is sodium, and if not replenished, can lead to dehydration. If you’re sweating during a ride, you’ll need to replenish this electrolyte via some salt consumption. Electrolyte drink mixes are a great option to help replenish these fluids and keep you hydrated.

Knowing the signs and symptoms of dehydration like dizziness, dry mouth, headaches, mental fog, and even in extreme cases, fainting, can help you take control of your hydration routine. When not treated, especially in warmer months, there’s a risk for experiencing more severe heat-related illnesses.

Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don’t see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they’ve never been on a motorcycle and can’t properly judge your speed. CHROMESC.COM

The Southeast Iron Butt Tour for

Operation Homefront

Just before the pandemic in 2020, Lee Keller (Knoxville IMRG) had an idea for an amazing motorcycle charity event. On August 21st, 2020 over 50 bikers accomplished the Iron Butt Association’s Saddle Sore 1000 by participating in the Inaugural Southeast Iron Butt Tour. After the amazing success last year, it had to happen again…only bigger. On April 30th, 2021, 220 motorcyclists began their 1,000-mile journey from 19 different participating Indian Motorcycle dealerships across the Eastern U.S. Their destination was American Biker/Indian Motorcycle of Charleston, SC. Like almost all motorcycle events, it was for a charity organization. The event raised over $30,000 for Operation Homefront which is dedicated to assisting military families in need with food, rent, home repairs, and even baby showers.

Each dealership group had a different route, but everyone started their ride at 4am. The host chapter, IMRG#1988 started at American Biker heading west on I-26, then back east on I-81 to I-64 and then south on US-29 until we hit I-73. The final sprint was south on I-95 and then back to American Biker on I-26. The first two groups (IMRG and CVMA) arrived between 8:20pm and 8:30pm and were the first groups to complete the ride out of the 19 starting points. The last group of riders rolled in at 2:30am on Saturday morning. The next day there was a celebration party with all the riders including food trucks, live music, and various vendors (including Klockwerks, Viking Bags, Eagle Lights, Custom Dynamics, Dixxon Flannel, Buffalo Brand Co, Identity Graphics, SC Stingrays, Indian Rider Radio, Two Indians, and many more).
