Moonshine Bill’s 1976 FXE Shovelhead Ferris Bueller famously said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” A few years ago, Moonshine Bill’s life started moving pretty fast in a direction that was not his choice. Things like 900 Sportsters and other bikes needed to go while more important responsibilities took priority. Afterwards, when it was time to stop and look around, he went looking for a new project. Once again, life doesn’t always go as planned. “I was looking for a project, basically something to rip apart and do up like I wanted. At the beginning, it was pretty normal- you know, knowing somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody. I ended up finding this 1976 FXE Shovelhead in a storage building in Charlotte. There were a bunch of old lawnmowers, really just a bunch of crap, and then there was this shovelhead in there. Of course it leaked oil everywhere when I kicked it, like they do.” The man who had it was apparently very particular. He had had it for about 20 years. If it wasn’t “jump on it and start” he would not ride it. Well, at some point many years ago, one day it didn’t start. That short park until he could fix it quickly turned into many years- so many years that now he doesn’t ride it anymore. So Moonshine Bill had found his new bike. Then the project plans took another direction. “Well, I wasn’t looking for a “nice” bike. But after I got it I decided it was too nice to tear apart.” He got it home, cleaned the tanks, cleaned the carb, changed the oil, adjusted the chains, put a battery in it and hit the road. “I haven’t even washed it yet. It’s got about 10,000 miles on it. So far, it starts with 1-2 kicks. I really like riding this shovel- a lot more than the other bikes I have. It’s just fun to ride. I really like the feel of it.” Most of us go looking for a nice bike that we can afford. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just an decent ride. We end up with a bike that won’t run and add it to the “someday” schedule. But sometimes, after life drives a person down a rough road, the right person gets the right break. Not everyone finds a deal on a very original low mile 40+ year old shovelhead, put up in an old shed between a bunch of lawnmowers, when they’re not looking for it. But they’re still out there if you slow down and look for them. Like Ferris also said, “if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.”

While looking at the May 2018 issue of Carolina Chrome I thought you may like to see something you used to see on the road a lot until the mid 60s when all of the Jap bikes started pouring into the Country, and that is a 1959 Cushman Eagle. Cushman Eagles were made in Lincoln, NE from 1937 to 1965.
Suicide shifter on the left side of tank and foot operated clutch. Stock engine from the factory was 340 cc and company advertisements touted cruise speed of 50 mph and 90 mpg, but a little tweaking on the carb and a few other items would get 60+ mph. This one shown below has been bored .060 over, pro-stock cam, valve job, larger carb, and a few other tricks, and will carry my 230 pounds down the road at a little over 65 mph.

Back Country Militia Encampment By Wally Wersching I decided to take a ride to the Kings Mountain National Military Park in South Carolina which holds many events throughout the year. On Saturday April 14th and Sunday April 15th, they held the first Backcountry Militia Encampment of the year where people dress and act like people from the 18th century. They put on demonstrations of many different things that were done during the 1700’s. It’s always a pleasant way to learn about our history. I took the backroads to the park. I always enjoy riding down the road to the two Kings Mountain Parks. It’s like riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway with trees lining the road from start to finish. The speed limit is only 35mph so it’s easy to enjoy the scenery as I ride. I arrived at the park at about 2:30PM. There was a woman weaving a ribbon. She said that it was very relaxing except when she makes a mistake, and has to take it all apart to make the correction. Another woman was cleaning up from lunch. They had sausage, apples, onions, and molasses – all cooked in the same cast iron pan. It was an authentic 18th century recipe. She showed me a plate that I talked with one of the reenactors. I remember that he was a was all that was left. It looked, and biker so I gave him a couple Carolina Chrome magazines. He smelled great! owns a Buell that was sold through the Harley dealerships On the side was a young reenactor for a while. The Buell motorcycle started in 1983, and ended performing wood working skills in 2009. For a while, it while explaining it all to the onlookused Harley Sportster ers. He was very talented. It’s great engines in special Buell to see the young people involved frames that were built with the activity. for handling instead of cruising. There were a lot of quality issues with the first bikes that were corrected in the later bikes. I rode one back in the day but the seat was too high for me. It handled great once I got it moving but I couldn’t reach the ground when I stopped. As we were talking, I saw the young lady ranger with the red powder box. She gives the reenactors the powder to fire their weapons. They were scheduled to demonstrate their firearms at 3:00PM. There was a crowd at the benches already waiting. 30

At the demonstration, one reenactor talked about the “Brown Bess” musket used by the British for over 100 years. It was a smooth bore so it wasn’t very accurate. It was meant to rapidly fire at the enemy, and could be loaded and fired three times a minute. It also had a long bayonet that could be attached to make the weapon even more menacing. Probably one of the best things about the “Brown Bess” was that all the parts were interchangeable between muskets. It was called a “Pattern Musket” where all the parts were made to a specific pattern. That way, when one broke, it could be repaired in the field by almost anyone. Another reenactor told about the benefits of the long rifle, and its shortcomings. It is very accurate at long distances but it takes a long time to load, over a minute. It was custom made for the man who would be using it. No two rifles were the same so any repairs would have to be made by a gunsmith.
After they talked about their weapons, they fired them. I always enjoy the smell of black powder smoke. They also had a few misfires which happened a lot – about 25% of the time. It really didn’t matter when hundreds of muskets were firing in unison, if a few didn’t fire. Before I left, I thanked them all for coming out to demonstrate, and explain how it was to live in the 18th Century. They don’t get paid to dress up and talk to the spectators. They do it because they love doing it. I left about 3:30PM, and headed home. It was a very educational and fun ride. Those are the kind I really enjoy.

Dr. Dilligaf, What is your opinion of the heated wear for riding in the winter time? I personally don’t like being plugged into my bike. Old School
