5th Annual Eli Ride
Why The “Eli Ride” - Celebration Of Life?
Elias “Eli” Matthew Jackson was a very happy, playful and energetic 2 year old. He loved to play with his brothers, Parker & Inman and he never met a stranger, and he loved giving a thumb up to everyone and was always smiling! On August 4th 2011, life as we knew it changed forever. Eli was 2 yrs., 6 months and 1 day old when his sweet life was tragically taken. A tree fell and struck him while playing in the backyard. A day that is permanently etched in our minds. He will forever be missed & the void will never be filled. As his Mother, I want his memory #1 Magazine Bikers to live on in the hearts of all that knew him and make a lasting impression on those The #1The Magazine forforSSouth ouTh Carolina Carolina BikerS! who didn’t. In 2014, we decided to get a group of friends together on his Birthday and #85 ride in his honor. That became the 1st Eli Ride. We didn’t collect money, just spent Issue March 2015 the day riding with friends. The next year, I was approached about making The Eli Ride a benefit. So we did! And I’m so excited we did! What a blessing it has been to so many including myself! We have met many wonderful people and some very special children. Peyton, who is battling cancer, Savannah, who needed a liver transplant and Brayden, who has AMC. These children have forever touched my heart and the hearts of so many others. This year, for the first time, The 5th Annual Eli Ride, will fall on his Birthday! This is even more special! Eli would be 9, what better way to celebrate his life! This year the ride benefited Grayson Owens! We were so excited to see so many come together for such a great cause! The Eli ride always starts and ends at House Divided, Woodruff Rd, in Greenville. With a 1 stop destination, this year our destination was Roadies in Gray Court. There we served food provided by Texas Roadhouse of Taylors and House Divided. We held an auction and handed out numerous door prizes. We raised nearly $12,000.00 this year which is the biggest “Eli Ride” yet! We have a great group of friends who help make this possible every year, as well as the local businesses FREE that donate items for auction and door prizes. It is truly a group effort!! So thankful for the biker community! The “Eli Ride” Cover Issue 85, March 2015 Sent in by Kristy Jackson Cover Photography by Parks King Eli’s Mother & “Eli’s Ride” Coordinator WWW.CHROMESC.COM 8

Dr. Dilligaf Q & A Dear Dr. Dilligaf, How do you pronounce your name? Secondly, what does Dilligaf stand for? Thanks, Just Wondering Dear Just Wondering, I pronounce my name with a strong emphasis on the D and the F. Get it? Probably not or I wouldn't have gotten a letter from you. Phonetically my name is pronounced ( dil il gaef ). As far as what Dilligaf stands for well, Dilligaf stands for the flag. Dilligaf stands for the National Anthem. Dilligaf stands for a woman to sit. Dilligaf stands for the elderly to sit. Dilligaf stands for a funeral to pass. Dilligaf stands for the infirm to sit. Dilligaf stands when introduced to someone. Dilligaf stands when an officer enters a room. Dilligaf stands to kick a man's a__ if he strikes a woman. But really what the name means in and of itself is, drum roll please. Do I Look Like I Give Away Food? Sarcastically yours, Dr. Dilligaf P.S. Did you fall for the Give Away Food part?
Dear Dr. Dilligaf , So lately I've been trying to avoid “dumb”... People these days seem entitled with a “ME” mindset. We have people running around with vaginas on their heads in protest....WTH is wrong with these people? But that is not my question! What I wonder is: What will people say for their eulogy? I mean they wear vaginas on their heads, Im thinking their bubble is bizarre! Any Ideas? Nicole Nicole, I am relatively certain I have an accurate answer for your question. If it were I giving the Eulogy I would probably offer up some prose like this. Here lies our recently dead, No longer wearing vaginas on their head, They died screaming at the president, Never making a political dent. Never again to cry and lament. As their time on earth was wastefully spent. Protesting and whining was their very best skill, A republican president their bitter pill. Now they’ve past and we that remain Won’t have to hear their bitching again. God have mercy on their soul Buried here in this six foot hole. RIP, Dr. Dilligaf

Riding With Wally
The Battle of Cowpens Anniversary
By Wally Wersching On January 13th and 14th, the 237th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens was held. On January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan led his outnumbered troops against Banastre Tarelton’s British troops. It was another victory for the Americans, and helped turn the tide of war in our favor. The last battle of the movie “The Patriot” was loosely based on the Battle of Cowpens. The anniversary celebration was held on both Saturday and Sunday. There were encampments of Revolutionary War re-enactors who demonstrated musket firings along with all forms of 18th century life which were exhibited by very knowledgeable reenactors while they were all wearing authentic uniforms, and civilian garb. The reenactors are like real-life history teachers. They do so much research about their roles that they know more than most history teachers in schools. They actually live the life which gives them an insight that only being there could do.
museum. It would be like a two-day class in the history of the Battle of Cowpens. I decided to go on Sunday which was a bright, sunny day with only a few clouds in the sky, but it was COLD! The temp when I left home was still around 20 degrees. The high for later in the afternoon was only to be in the mid-30’s. Not long ago, we had a week-long stretch of very cold weather which is unusual for the South. When I arrived at the Cowpens Battlefield (near Chesnee, SC), it was 10:30AM. I was guided to a great spot in the parking lot near the main building by the South Carolina State Guardsmen who were directing traffic. The air was filled with wood smoke from the camp fires as the re-enactors cooked breakfast. I walked past the large tent where they were holding the “Divine Service” – an 18th century church service. I could hear them singing. I walked into the encampment taking pictures of the people getting ready for the long afternoon. In the background, I could hear the hammering of the blacksmith making things in his forge.
Many of the people were completely covered trying to stay warm with blankets wrapped around them. There was another problem. The wind was blowing which made it feel a lot colder. As I was walking in the sun, I was almost comfortable with my multi layers of clothes under my leather jacket. I had to walk into the woods to get to the cavalry demonstration, and once out of the sun, it got cold fast. It felt like it dropped 20 more degrees but there was no wind. There was a family of five adults and a baby who camped in the woods to get out of the wind. They were huddled around a small fire, and all I could see were their eyes. The rest of their bodies were covered with blankets. They had a baby Many different free activities were scheduled for the two with them who wasn’t happy about being so cold. Mike Bruso’s 1981 Harley-Davidson Sturgis FXB
Article & Pictures By Button
For most of the year, it’s pretty easy to catch up with a cool bike here and there. That’s when the weather is hot and the bikes are cool. When Mike Bruso came riding into Chesnee on his gorgeous original shovelhead, it was just the opposite. “Man, it’s pretty damn cold to be riding this morning. When I saw it was only about 40F when I was heading out, I decided to put the cover on the oil cooler.” He pointed out the original black vinyl cover that came with his 1981 Sturgis. It covers up the factory oil cooler in colder weather to help keep the engine oil temps up in the proper range. Kind of hard to imagine having to plan ahead to keep a shovelhead from running too cold in South Carolina. Harley was thinking ahead with this model. “It’s an FXB” said Mike, “with the “B” meaning belt drive - both primary and final drive.”
Mike is like many of us. He’s been riding for decades. “I’ve had a lot of bikes. I get what I want, usually they come and go when I can flip this one to get the next one. Getting a nice Sturgis has been a goal for a long time. This one is a keeper, just like my ‘39.” More on that bike in coming months. I’m a big fan of original paint and commented on the condition of Mike’s Sturgis. “Well, that’s part of the story of this bike. Eventually, I found this bike through a friend in Florida that I knew was a straight shooter. He said it was right. The bike was bought new in Wisconsin and was actually still on the original title. Just after the original owner bought the bike, he decided he wanted chrome instead of paint. So he pulled off all the original painted parts, carefully wrapped them up and shelved them. When he stopped riding about 10 years ago, he put all the original painted sheet metal back on the bike.”
We talked about the design and it being one of Willie G.’s early home runs as a designer as Mike warmed up in the sun. “I have wanted a nice Sturgis for a long time. Looked at at least 3 or 4 that were supposed to be this nice. I went to Georgia to look at an ‘80 that was supposed to be in great shape. When I got there, it looked like the whole bike had been sandblasted. This bike has about 30K miles on it and still looks great.” WWW.CHROMESC.COM 26
So, why did Mike come to town at 9AM on a 40F Friday morning when it was supposed to be at least 60F on Saturday? “Man, it’s supposed to be pouring tomorrow. I’m not putting this out in the weather like that on purpose.” Between Harley doing a dual belt drive shovelhead with a cold weather cover for the oil cooler, an original owner shelving all of the brand new factory paint parts for decades and a new owner still looking down the road for what’s coming tomorrow, there’s been a lot of planning ahead in the life of this lucky bike.

old. I’ll be 74 next month. If interested, go to www.sg.sc.gov for more info. Then when I saw the ranger with the red powder carrying case walking toward the firing range, I walked to the firing range along with a large crowd. We watched as the line of riflemen marched to their places in front of the crowd. They didn’t talk much about their lives as soldiers like they did last year because of the cold. They turned an about face, and fired their flintlocks on command. It was pretty loud, and some of the children were afraid. It’s always enjoyable to see the muskets fire, and smell the burnt black powder as the smoke drifts over the spectators. For the finale, they fired the cannon. Now that was very loud. I can never get a clear shot because I always jump even though I know ....Continued from page 18 what’s coming. I could tell that it was difficult to get the horses to do what the rider wanted. A couple couldn’t keep up. Later, they talked about using the horse as a weapon while in battle with the infantry. The main weapon for the cavalry soldier was the sabre. Some also had pistols. It was very interesting. The next demonstration was weapons firing so I walked through the field to the firing range. I heard three young men playing their fiddles. The crowd around them was clapping and jumping to the music to keep warm. I can imagine that the fiddler’s fingers were very cold.
While walking around the encampment talking with the re-enactors, I learned that they came from all over the southeast to participate in the activities. I left about noon. As I was leaving, I saw a family eating some of the delicious food sold at the event. The little ones were really enjoying their outdoor lunch. I cannot wait until next year to visit the battlefield celebration again – hopefully it will be warmer. I never know what I’ll see, or who I’ll meet. It’s always very educational, and interesting. I was a little early for the weapons firing so I stopped to talk with one of the South Carolina State Guard. He tried to recruit me into his organization even though I told him that I lived in North Carolina. He gave me a pamphlet which told their story. It sounds like a very important organization. I would have been proud to be a member but I’m too old. The cut-off was 71 years WWW.CHROMESC.COM 28
