Saturday Bikes and Music By Wally Wersching

From late August through September, Spartanburg H-D held a “Bikes and Music” every Saturday afternoon from 12 to 4. It was sponsored by Spartanburg H-D, and Iron Horse Motorcycle Lawyers. There was live music by different artists each Saturday. The dealership offered free motorcycle safety inspections. They had a food vendor on-site, and held 50/50 drawings. It was a great “Biker Party” along with all the new Harleys, and apparel in the showroom. I went on Saturday, September 16th, and arrived about 1:00PM. It was a beautiful late summer afternoon, and there were already quite a few bikes in the lot. I parked and walked around. The first thing I noticed was the AMSOIL truck. The friendly AMSOIL representative is at many events selling AMSOIL products which are all fully synthetic. AMSOIL In 1972, Founder, Al Amatuzio, had a breakthrough when AMSOIL 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil became the first synthetic motor oil in the world to meet American Petroleum Institute service requirements. It outperformed conventional oils on all counts. In 1994, Al Amatuzio was honored as the pioneer of synthetic lubrication with his induction into the Lubricants World Hall of Fame. After a pleasant conversation with the rep, I walked into the showroom where I heard a salesman telling about the “All New” Harley Softails. I had read about them in a couple magazines. The all new Softail suspension that Harley spent a lot of money, and man-hours redesigning looks a lot like the one on my Victory, and those on the new Indians too. It’s great that Harley has finally caught up with the other motorcycle manufacturers. As I walked past the food concession, I caught a whiff of the delicious smell of the BBQ they were selling. If I hadn’t just eaten, I would have had a sandwich or two. The band “Split Shot’ was preparing for their next session. I sat in one of the chairs for the audience. I watched and listened as they played. They played Southern Rock type music – very well. The guitar player really knew how to pick. People came and went while I was there. It was very casual and relaxing. I will try to go back next Saturday. Page 10

Carolina Chrome “Grits Cook Off”

Yep, your read that right, Grits Cook Off! If you follow me on Social Media, mainly Facebook @ Nicole C GW, you see that my friends and I are usually on the #backporch having our weekly “meetings”. Some of us have a few drinks, some cook but we mostly talk... I mean, the guys barely let us ladies get a word end!! Anyways, Tammy, our Bikers Backyard Recipe writer, brought up an interesting idea and that was to have a “Grits Cook Off”! Being from the South, we all know that Grits are NOT the easiest to cook! Between being too soupy, too lumpy, burnt, so on and so on, Grits are a challenge! Carolina Chrome Magazine hosted our 1st “Grits Cook Off” at what better place then House Divided in Greenville, SC. Anyone that knows Owner Pal or House Divided, knows that’s where you go to eat!! They have a fantastic menu throughout the week and on most weekends especially Sundays, he is spoiling the crowd with free food!! SQUIRREL... Let me get back on track! Sunday, March 26, 2017 Carolina Chrome and House Divided hosted the most delicious contest; the “Grits Cook Off!”. A panel of judges rated each entry and gave a number score. With about 15 entries, my low carb diet was shot!! And, I was “full as a tick”! Oh my, they were all so good and the scores were so close! As we debated on the BEST and everyone got to eat some too we decided.... DRUM ROLL PLEASE! The over all winner was: Jeff Toth!! Great job Jeff!! The winner, Jeff, received $100, a feature in Carolina Chrome Magaazine and BRAGGING RIGHTS until the next Upstate Winner!! Thanks to all that participated, it was truly a blast!! ~Nicole CGW Editor-in-Chief

Page 14

My name is Jeff Toth. I enjoy cooking and I was thrilled to win the Grits cook off. I have compiled my shrimp and grits recipe that I entered into the competition. My biggest fear was trying to share a recipe. You see my friends all know that I cook by taste. I love to start with an idea and make things, but I fail to write recipes down. So each attempt is somewhat unique. I truly enjoy the kitchen. I got my passion for cooking years ago from my step dad. He would spend the day cooking for couples because he had no one else to cook for. When pops came into my life, he inspired me and we quickly learned to share our kitchen experiences. Pops left this earth too early, but his passion has remained a part of my life. Each week my friends and I enjoy posting food pictures on Facebook to try to challenge each other! We consistently use the hash tag #tothlife. Every now and then we get the chance to share food with others. That is what's so fun about entering food cook offs at House Divided! I'm already looking for the next competition! Thank you Carolina Chrome for being a part of this one! If you have a chance to try my recipe I hope you enjoy it! -Jeff

www.chromesc.com

This recipe will make a large quantity as I used it for a cook off at House Divided, but it can be adjusted for what ever size party you are having. It's actually very easy dish to make for a nice week day dinner for two? I struggle to use recipes and tried to write this down as I cooked. Tweak it where it suites your tastes and needs! Have fun with it! I hope yours turns out amazing!

Grits

8 Cups Chicken Broth 2 Cups Water 2 Cups White Stone Ground Grits 1 box Philadelphia Cream Cheese (cut into cubes) 8 ounces shredded Italian cheese blend ¼ cup Parmesan grated cheese ½ cup heavy cream 1 Teaspoon course ground pepper ½ Teaspoon salt

In a large pan bring the Liquids, salt, and pepper to a boil.. Slowly stir in the grits and continue to boil for 3 or 4 minutes. Cover the pan and reduce the heat setting to simmer and let sit for 20 minutes Add cheeses and stir the grits until the cheeses are melted. Add the heavy cream and stir it.. Cut off the heat source and leave covered Blackening spices (can use any type you prefer) Looking for about ¾ cup of spices. 1/3 cup creole seasoning 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon crushed thyme 1 teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon Garlic salt ½ teaspoon Onion salt Stir all these dry ingredients together. Divide into two parts 1/3rd and 2/3rd 1/3 will be used in the gravy 2/3 will be used to cover shrimp

Shrimp

2.5 pounds of Large shrimp.. Peeled, cleaned & tails removed.. In a gallon side bag add the 2/3rd blackening spices and the shrimp. Seal bag and shake the shrimp and spices until the shrimp are covered with a thin layer of spices. Let sit while you are cutting up the vegetables

Gravy

8 to 10 strips of thick cut bacon (cut into small pieces) 2 table spoons chopped garlic ¾ cup finely chopped onion ¾ cup finely chopped celery ¾ cup finely chopped green pepper 1 package of Andouille sausage cut in half length wise and then cut into ¼ inch lengths 5 cups water 1 cup milk ¼ cup of flour Corn starch (if needed) 1/3 blacked spice mix 4 tablespoons shortening

Cook on medium high temp but don't scorch any ingredients. Use a very large frying pan or deep dish cooking pan. Add 2 tablespoons shortening Once hot, cook the shrimp being careful to only have one layer. Turn each over for a good sear Remove when both sides are cooked. Set aside Add bacon, brown the bacon. When done but not crispy, pull it out of the pan saving as much bacon grease as possible Add the rest of the shortening and the garlic, onions, peppers, and celery. Continue to stir and let these ingredients really cook down. Remove them and put them in a blender, or food processor to smooth the vegetables. Add back into the pan add the flour.. Continue to stir to make a paste. (Roux) you can add addition shortening if needed Add water and whisk it to get every thing blended and smooth. Add milk and continue to stir. Bring to a boil and continue stirring looking to see the gravy thicken and turn light brown Add sausage and the previously cooked bacon Add remaining blackening season and continue to stir. Gravy can be adjusted by adding more water or mixing in corn start for desired consistency. Once passing the taste test, and your thickness is desired gravy is ready. Reduce heat to simmer. Add the cooked shrimp. Stir well. Both the grits and the gravy will do good in crock pots on low settings. Serve in bowls or plates Grits are on the bottom covered with the gravy..

On the first weekend of September, the U.S. Military Vets MC, held their State Combined Annual Celebration. On Saturday, along with more than 200 local residents, brothers from 9 different states helped to celebrate this annual event. On Sunday, the Walterboro Chapter held their Annual Wreaths Across America Rally fundraiser. A portion of the proceeds will support the efforts to place a wreath on every headstone in Beaufort National Cemetery.

On November 5, 2017, The Walterboro Chapter will host their next big event at Skynyrd’s Sports Bar and Grill. The 6th Annual Victory House Ride will begin registering at Noon and the ride will depart for Victory House at 1300. Upon arrival at Victory House, we will visit with the heroes that reside there. At 1500, the ride returns to Skynyrd’s for an after party that will include giveaways and entertainment.

Both of these events are held annually and are extremely important to the U.S. Military Vets MC as an organization because they remind us of those who have gone before us and made possible the freedoms we all have. They deserve the respect and honor that we are so proud to give!

Ride To Save Lives By Travis Gill

On September 17th, motorcycle enthusiasts and music fans packed The Filling Station in Cayce, SC to help In-Vest USA raise money to purchase body armor vests for law enforcement officers. The community came together to participate in a variety of events including a poker run, bike show, 50/50 raffle, and a dunking booth. Several live bands were on hand to provide entertainment during the festivities. Despite the heat, there was an impressive turnout for the event. The day started with registration for the poker run at 11:00 am and from that point on, a sea of motorcycles filled the parking area until the sun went down and the event wrapped up around 8:00 pm. The live music kicked off on the outdoor stage at 3:30 with the band Radio Cult from Atlanta, GA. The band, led by guitarist / vocalist Bambi Lynn, had the crowd on their feet by charging through a variety of classic rock favorites and original songs. Despite the blistering afternoon heat literally melting some of their equipment, the band put on a high-energy performance with Bambi Lynn jumping off the stage and running through the crowd, always with a smile on her face. Local favorites, Cydetrax, took the stage next playing hard rocking cover songs as the crowd and the band alike took a beating from the sun. However, not everyone was suffering. To show their support of the Radio Cult fundraiser, local officers volunteered to take a swim in Bambi Lynn the Dunkin' Tank if anyone was a good enough pitcher to knock them down. There must have been some ball players in attendance because there was certainly plenty of soaking going on. Up on stage, the band sweat through an hour of hit songs that had the crowd singing along. King Nothing Brandon Christensen

Cydetrax

Closing out the night was an awesome Metallica tribute band called King Nothing. If you closed your eyes, you'd think you were listening to the real Metallica as they kicked off their show with the song Enter Sandman. Guitarist / vocalist Jesse James Stattler had the mannerisms and the vocals of Metallica guitarist / vocalist James Hetfield down pat. The sun was beginning to set by the time King Nothing finished pounding out their set of Metallica covers and the crowd was exhausted. As the sun went down and the bike taillights disappeared into the distance, the hard working staff of The Filling Station still hadn't had a chance to catch their breath. Every barstool was filled throughout the entire day and with the game playing on the TVs, it didn't look like the bar was going to slow down any time soon. I'm sure that In-Vest USA must have been happy with the turnout. It was great to see the motorcycle community come out to support such a great cause! Dr. Dilligaf, Without any sort of research such as Google or any computer website, encyclopedia, persons, etcetera, answer this question What do skulls mean in the motorcycle world? What about wings? Let’s see you think big boy! ~Love, The Back Porch Crew Dear Back Door Crew, What a sexist punch of a--holes. Why do you assume that because I’m a Doctor that I’m a man. Everyone knows that wings are what keeps my maxi-pads from leaking on the sides. Enough with the BS, y’all know I’m a man so I’ll let you slide on that but not the “let’s stump the Doctor” attitude. This might just be a question that generates responses from our coloring book, let’s just look at the pictures, oh look free magazines crowd of followers. I’ll lay some the common thoughts out there and y’all decide where you land on it. Alert, alert, skulls and wings together didn’t start with motorcycle clubs or WWll Airmen. There are ancient churches across Europe who decorated their halls and walls with skulls, bones and wings. Skulls have reminded humanity for ages that we will all one day face the reaper. There are only two things that everyone who lives goes through, coming and going. Skulls have reminded us of the death part for ages. Couple that with wings to symbolize that after death there is no end, we fly on. WWll pilots embraced this symbology to remind themselves that they flew into battle with the understanding that they may not fly back but that they would fly on. When we ride a motorcycle we embrace that understanding as well. The skull also scared the crap out of the people they were shooting and dropping bombs on. Painting daisies or unicorns on planes would not have worked as well. The early “bikers” after WWll often times were soldiers looking to fit in to a world that did not understand what they had been through. They didn’t get PTSD treatments. They embraced the Biblical mandate, Physician heal thyself. They bought up the military surplus HD motorcycles and formed their clubs, many of them appropriating the symbols of their military squadrons and units.

Another interesting note is that the skull has been used by HD as a logo symbol for many years. In the 60’s and 70’s another popular brand of motorcycles began to make inroads in the American bike culture. Honda still uses the Wing symbol to this day. You can Photoshop Honda wings over a Harley skull and there you go. I guess I should throw this in there too, Remember Bill Shakespeare had quite a thing for skulls as well. Hamlet is still one of his most popular plays. Bikers may have embraced these symbols but their meanings and attraction have been around for a very long time. Regardless of where you fall in what you’re willing to believe we all have to admit, the skull, the wings and motorcycles have all been used to inspire terrific art in paint and ink. ~The Doctor Dr. Dilligaf, How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop while riding my bike? Signed ~Just wondering Just wondering, I think I will table my response to your letter until I can do some research. I should have an answer for you after Halloween. This gig doesn’t pay me enough to afford candy, so I’ll steal some from the grandkids candy sack on the 31st and get back to you. ~Doctor Dilligaf

70 years and CountingPaul DiMascio 1934 Indian Chief

This is an urban legend. Actually, it’s more than that because it’s true. So I’ll let owner Paul DiMascio tell you the truth. “This is a 1934 Indian Chief. It was bought new and used by the New Jersey State Police for 12 years. My father bought it in 1947 for $75.00. He rode it until 1960- racing, jumping bridges and doing lots of things that aren’t really legal. Anyways, he parked it in ‘60 and started to restore it but never finished. Work and family got in the way. So it sat there in pieces for a long time. In 2007, he gave it to me. It was about 5 years before I started working on the Indian. In 2012, I was talking to a good friend about it. He asked, “When is your father’s birthday?” That was in August. I told him he would turn 83 in April. “Well,” he said, “We had better get to work if we’re going to have it done by his birthday...” The project that had lingered for over 50 years immediately turned into a winter thrash. “We got a lot done- all the major parts, paint, assembled and rolling into something that looked like a real motorcycle. It wasn’t quite running, but it wasn’t a pile of parts anymore. And it looked a lot nicer than it ever had when my father had it. Anyways, Dad still lives in Pennsylvania. So I put it in an enclosed trailer and headed out to surprise him on his birthday. I parked in his driveway. Then I dropped the trailer door. He stood there for at least 5 minutes, absolutely speechless. It was really great.” Since then, the Chief has become a regular part of our local bike scene. “I’m still getting all the details sorted. Just did the generator and had work done on the transmission so I can ride on longer rides with more confidence. I’m not jumping bridges with it, but it’s great to ride.” While we were talking, I told Paul how his is one of my favorite old bikes. I have always really liked the lines of these early Chiefs. He agreed. After only overhearing his story many times, it was great to finally hear the whole story. “You know, I’m always surprised at how so many people respond to both the bike and the story about it. It has won all kinds of awards, but everybody wants to hear me tell the story.” We came to the conclusion that this bike and the story are one of the ultimate motorcycle themes. Most bike people know or even participated in some part of such a story.
