The Motorcycle community has always had a large outpouring of support for Breast Cancer fundraising. Hundreds of fundraising events are held ALL year in SC, not just October! These events are especially for those battling the disease & many other events are for the Awareness.
The United States National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, published and an article based on their research correlating between motorcycles and Breast Cancer. Below is a summary of their findings; pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Motorcycles And Breast Cancer:
The Influence Of Peer Support & Challenge On Distress And Post traumatic Growth
B A Morris 1, S K Chambers, M Campbell, M Dwyer, J Dunn
Affiliations expand PMID: 21983863 DOI: 10.1007/s00520-011-1287-5 Abstract
Purpose:
Peer support programs based on exercise or challenge activities may have potential to improve well-be ing for women diagnosed with breast cancer. The current study investigated the role of social compari son and social identity based on group membership on post traumatic growth (PTG) and distress.
Methods:
Fifty-one women diagnosed with breast cancer who participated in a 1,000 mi group motorcycle ride completed pre- and post-ride surveys. Participants had a mean age of ~50 years and their average time since diagnosis was ~6.5 years.
Results:
Cancer-related distress significantly decreased after the ride! Post traumatic growth did not significantly differ after the ride, which may have been a result of a ceiling effect on this measure. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that pre-ride post traumatic growth and upward social comparison during the ride were related to post-ride post traumatic growth. Pre-ride distress was the only variable to remain significantly related to post-ride distress.
Conclusions: The results of the current study highlight the potential for challenge-based activities to provide a positive peer support environment for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Identifying factors that promote personal growth and reduce cancer-related distress allow us to create a model for the delivery of these challenge-based peer support activities.
Through my research, I find; MOTORCYCLES AID in the stress relief of Breast Cancer Disease. With that being said; GREAT JOB Motorcycle Community

Why is driving such a problem for humans?
We have spent years at our statehouse on distracted driving legislation. We have many in our ranks that have been personally affected by distracted drivers and some have lost their lives. Sometimes and want to make sure this is not always I get a person that feels making tougher laws on drivers and even requiring them to pay attention to the road is a violation to their rights. Below is a very good summary of what I call “Whose Rights Are Right” written by Del Ahlstedt about this subject.
Why a Hands-free law doesn’t violate individual rights –
By Del Ahlstedt, A Libertarians View
As a Libertarian I believe in Individualism, Individual Rights, Spontaneous Order, The Rule of Law, Limited Government, Free Markets, Production, Natural Harmony, and Peace. While I am strongly against intru sive law’s I see the “hand’s free” issue from the Individual Rights and Rule of Law perspectives.
A quick summary of these 2 key concepts:
Individual Rights - Individuals have a right to be secure in their life, liberty, and property. These rights are inherent in the nature of human beings. They are not granted by a ruling entity (government).
Rule of Law - Liberty under law, where individuals are free to pursue their own interests if there is respect for the same rights of others. This rule of law means that individuals are governed by generally applicable and spontaneously developed legal rules, not by arbitrary commands.
So how does this apply to a “hand’s free” law. Unlike laws that impose limits on an individual’s actions when the action does not affect another individual’s rights, like a helmet law. A “hand’s free” law protects the individual from an action by another that may have a direct impact on the right to be secure in their life. An individual who is holding any device in their hand creates a self-imposed handicap in the event of an emergency or need to fully control a 2-ton motor vehicle. This handicap is commonly captioned as “distracted driving”. While there is limited data on the actual effect of “hand’s free” law’s it is reasonable to see that any activity that increases the risk of harm to another individual is violating that individual’s Individual Rights.
Next is the need to assure that an individual doesn’t violate another individual’s rights. Thus the “Rule of Law”. To be fair the law needs to be specific in definition, with penalties that provide proactive adherence. Again, this law is to protect an individual from the adverse impact of an other’s actions. Hence there is no violation of natural rights, only a protection from interference in the right to be secure in their life.

The Patriot Express Foundation’s 5th Annual Military Benefit Run
On Saturday, Septem ber 3rd, the Patriot Express Foundation held their 5th Annual Military Benefit Ride to help our military and their families. 95% of all the money raised went to help military families in South Carolina. The Patriot Express Foundation was established in 1996 by the Dave Barr Foundation as a series of motorcycle events and fundraisers designed to raise awareness while providing help for our injured military veterans.
Dave Barr joined the US Marines in 1969, and went to Vietnam. He later joined forces to support peace and stability in Israel, Zimbabwe/Rhodesia, and finally in South Africa where he was severely injured by a land mine, and lost both his legs. When he returned to the states, he went home to California. He realized that he wanted to ride his old 1972 Harley Shovelhead, and after some modification, he was riding it regularly. That’s when he decided to ride his Harley around the world in hopes to show other people with disabilities that they can do whatever they want. It took him two and a half years but he finished the 83,000 mile trip around the world.
Later, Dave Barr and Mike Wourms wrote a book about his adventure“Riding the Edge”.
This year’s event started at the Wicked Wrench Motorcycle Company (now the Spartan Motorcycle Company) at 10:00AM, and went about a hundred miles through South Carolina to the Elk’s
Lodge in Union, Rotties in Woodruff, Pour Sports in Greer, the Moonlight Tavern in Boiling Springs, Wings Etc. in Boiling Springs, and ended up back at the Spartan Motorcycle Company for food, live music, awards, and other festivities.
I stopped at the Crestview Baptist Church for their “First Saturday” breakfast. After finishing breakfast, I headed south, and arrived at the Spartan Motorcycle Company at about 8:45AM. It was a very pleasant ride in the cool 60 degree morning.
I placed a stack of Carolina Chrome magazines on the registration table, and gave them a donation. They gave me a Patriot Express t-shirt in return.
I saw Dave standing next to his bike, and walked over to say Hi. He actually remembered me from a year ago when they held their last event at C&C Thunder in Cowpens, SC.

I met another vet from the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association by the name of Jason “The Polish Hammer”. After we talked for a while, we walked over, and I introduced him to Dave. They started talking, and got along great. They had a lot in common –both combat vets with Purple Hearts!
We started talking, and he told me about some of his exploits on his Harley. We got along great. He is a US Marine vet, and I’m a Navy vet. We started kidding each other like the Navy and Marines do.
I asked him about his bike, and the 21” front spoked wheel. He said that if he had a cast wheel, it would have broken the first day of his round the world trip. He had to straighten his wheels every night, and one day he had nine flat tires to repair. That’s determination!
I thanked him for the interview, and left him talking to another biker. I watched him for a while. He walks without a cane but when he stands, he needs something to lean against. He rode his Harley all the way from his home in California to be at this ride.
Pretty soon, other bikers were arriving, and signing in for the ride. I watched as they rode in, and talked with many – some were friends from local biker ministries like the Armored Saints and the Christian Motorcycle Association.
Soon, everybody was called around for information about the ride, and then the pre-ride prayer. Afterwards, they all went to their respective bikes, and left in a group. There was a very loud roar for about five minutes, and then all was quiet again.
I decided to buy Dave’s book “Riding the Edge”, and learn how he was able to accomplish the around the world ride. He has so many interesting stories about his ride.
I left heading home. I stopped at Strawberry Hill produce stand on the way to buy Cindy a cantaloupe. It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning!

A road trip to Niagara Falls and riding the Blue Ridge Parkway from one end to the other have both been on my long-term bucket list.
Recently, a group of brothers and I decided we were going to do both on the same road trip. The plan was simple. Hit the interstate and get to Niagara Falls in a couple of days, then easy ride to Waynesboro, VA where the northern end of the parkway begins. Beyond that, just go with the flow!
Early on Saturday morning, I kissed Donna goodbye, met my brothers for a nice breakfast, and rolled out onto the blacktop for eight days on the road. Spending two days on the interstate between Greenwood, SC and Niagara Falls, except for a few scenic areas, was admittedly pretty boring. Compounded by scattered thunderstorms and folks in automobiles with less than stellar driving skills, I was reminded of why I prefer twisty back roads whenever possible over major highways.
We arrived in Niagara Falls, NY ahead of schedule and decided to go and visit the falls on that Sunday afternoon. All I can say is WOW! What a breathtaking sight to behold! Since the Canadian side boasts of the best view, and we lacked the desire to make the walk across the overcrowded Rainbow Bridge, we decided to take the boat tour, which was also well worth the money and time. Six hundred and eighty THOUSAND gallons of water pass over Niagara Falls every second, creating what is referred to as a mist, but has more resemblance to the worst thunderstorm you have ever experienced than a light sprinkle! The rain ponchos we were given as we boarded the boat were greatly appreciated and kept us mostly dry and comfortable. All in all, things were going as planned.
Bright and early the next morning, with Niagara Falls in the rearview mirror, we headed toward Waynesboro, VA and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Having seen enough of the interstate, and being a couple of days ahead of schedule, the decision was made to take the scenic route south to our destination. Because of this, we were able to enjoy some beautiful mountain and back road countryside from upstate New York, through Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and into Virginia.
On day six of our excursion, we hit the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway and kicked back in our saddles to enjoy the next 469 miles of God’s creation.
It seemed around every turn and over every hill, the road opened up into a new masterpiece meticulously designed by God for our enjoyment. Rolling meadows, mountain twisties, and breathtaking vistas were clicking by mile after mile as we moved farther and farther south.
Then, almost without warning, we hit a construction zone with a detour. Apparently, there was road work going on and the next 12 miles were closed.
Bummed that we were unable to continue forward, we exited the parkway and wound up in a mess for over an hour. We were creeping along in heavy traffic, our bikes overheating, and our fingers were feeling the “clutch hand blues”. It was hot, noisy, and miserable. How had such an enjoyable ride turned into this fiasco so quickly? We eventually returned to the comfort of the parkway and what a relief it was! There were two more detours like the first before we finished the parkway in Cherokee, North Carolina. While those detours were awful, when we got through them, it made us appreciate the good road even more.
During the three days we spent on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I was reminded that our road trip was a lot like our lives. We can be traveling along smoothly with everything going just right and not a care in the world, and then all of a sudden, the unexpected happens. We hit a detour that seems to wreck everything. Whether it be illness, relationship problems, or even the loss of a job, detours can come at any moment without warning. When those things come against us, it is important to remember to put our trust in Jesus, and he will carry us through. Then, once the detour has passed, we will appreciate his gifts all the more. Believe it or not, regardless of the situation, He is in control and will carry you through. That is a guarantee!
Psalm 107:28-31 NLT Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.

Indian Versus HarleyRound One
The rivalry was on. Harley-Davidson had just debuted their V-Twin prototype at the 1907 Chicago Automobile Show. Two years earlier, Indian Motorcycle had built a V-Twin racer.
Fast-forward to 1915 and the two companies are now locked firmly in battle. Harley-Davidson released its 11F, flaunting its three-speed transmission. But Indian Motorcycles struck back with its Powerplus engine, which would see a legendary racer like Erwin 'Cannonball' Baker set records.

Do You Really Know What It's All About?
By Ray Richards, ABATE Coordinator
It’s October and it’s time for our HELMET rally, celebrating our first major accomplishment, the revision of the SC Helmet Law! There is a miscon ception in the public’s mind as well as many motorcyclists that helmets are the only interest of ABATE. Those actively involved in ABATE know this is not the case. The right to choose the use of a helmet or not is only one right we have to protect. This brings me to discuss ing what SC ABATE is about. A.B.A.T.E, A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments, is against the infringement on our rights. SC ABATE has and is about a motorcyclists’ right to choose. All cur rent legislation that we support or op pose, stays with that purpose.
ABATE of SC is currently monitoring and supporting several areas of legisla tion that all motorcyclists should be sup porting:
“Our Lives Are Worth More Than A Few Points”
Your loved ones life is worth more than a $200 fine and a 4 point failure to yield ticket!

Distracted Driving
Failure to Yield Handsfree and more....
I have heard from several members that they feel the Handsfree legislation goes against our freedoms and contra dicts our accomplishment of revising the helmet law based on our right to choose. Currently if someone decides to use their cell phone or has any other distrac tion while driving resulting in significant injury or death only caries a small fine, $232.
What is the difference in choosing to speed or drive while under the influence, that results in significant injury or death than picking up a phone with the same ending? In my opinion that has to change. If I choose to not wear a helmet and I am in an accident my decision only affects me on the reverse. If I choose to use my phone and have an accident, it could result in someone else being affected. We need all of our members and non-members on board work ing to change the laws to help protect all drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and espe cially MOTORCYCLISTS.
@Barrell House, 104 Robertson Blvd. Walterboro, SC 29488
A special guest speaker; Mr. Scott Wade, will be attending. He lost his son; Hampton, from a Failure To Yield collision on September 27, 2018.

More States Look to Pass Lane Splitting / Filtering Legislation
August 19, 2022
Even though lane splitting /filtering is widely practiced throughout much of the world, many in the United States have looked at it as a crazy idea that would remain forever confined to California. This has now proven not to be the case.
Each year, the number of states that consider some form of lane splitting / filtering legislation increases. With the relatively recent passage of laws in Utah, Montana, and, most recently, Arizona, that trend is likely to continue at an accelerated rate. It is expected that motorcycle rights organizations in more than half a dozen states will introduce some type of lane splitting/filtering bill in the upcoming year.
Let’s address the obvious question. What is lane split ting and lane filtering, and what is the difference? Ask that question a dozen times and you are likely to get a dozen different answers.
Generally, lane splitting is riding a motorcycle between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane. Lane filtering is often described as allowing motorcy clists to trickle down between or around rows of stopped/ slow-moving vehicles, usually at stop lights, in order to allow the rider to navigate towards the front of the line, which allows them to take off safely without being rear ended. Both practices allow motorcyclists to take advantage of the slimmer profile of motorcycles in order to ma neuver them more effectively through traffic.
Laws being passed in the United States are generally a hybrid of these two practices. For instance, both Utah and Arizona allow motorcycles traveling on a roadway with two or more lanes in the same direction to pass stopped traf fic in the same lane so long as the speed limit of the road is not greater than 45 miles per hour, and the motorcycle travels at a speed of 15 miles per hour or less. In Montana, motorcyclists may pass other vehicles in the same lane of travel that are stopped or traveling at a speed of 10 miles an hour or less, so long as the overtaking motorcycle is not operated at a speed in excess of 20 miles an hour.
States that have allowed the practice of splitting/filtering have found the practice to be beneficial. The California High-
way patrol specifically endorses the practice under controlled conditions such as those in the states mentioned above. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) endorses lane splitting, citing the long-term success in California, and a study by University of California Berkeley researchers showing that the practice enhances motorcycle safety by reducing rear end collisions which can often be catastrophic for motorcyclists.
A 2012 Belgian study found that if just 10 percent of drivers were to switch to motorcycles and filter through traffic, travel times would decrease for the remaining car drivers by some eight minutes per journey. This benefit would not exist if motorcyclists ignored the inherent ad vantages of their smaller, narrower vehicles and sat in line like cars. The same study found considerable environmental benefits to lane splitting—not because bikes emit less carbon (many larger bikes are as bad as cars), but because every bike that lane splits actively reduces the amount of time every other vehicle on the road spends sitting in traffic jams.
Lane splitting or filtering shouldn’t be confused with reckless riding. Weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds isn’t allowed in any fashion anywhere in the United States.
The benefits described above are among the reasons why we will continue to see lane splitting/filtering legislation introduced in states throughout the country. As more states realize the benefits of such legislation, the practice will become more accepted, just as it is throughout Europe and most of the rest of the world. So keep an eye out. It may be coming to your state next.
