Lessons from the Open Road By K. D. Byrd
Pray Before Departure We have prayer before starting every ride. Something about prayer makes me feel safer, as if God were riding along beside me. I know He’s with me anyway, but praying seems to make it more concrete, more personal. “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersover thou goest.” Joshua 1:9 “Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.” I Chronicles 16:10-11

The Most Common Motorcycle Accident; A Car Hits You From Behind!

The AMCA “Legends” Chapter Meeting and More
By Wally Wersching The Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) was formed in 1954, and now has over 11,000 members in the USA, Canada, and Europe. The AMCA’s goal is to restore, preserve, and operate motorcycles that are at least 35 years old. To be a member, it is not a requirement that you own an antique bike (or any bike for that matter) – just have the enthusiasm for, and love of old bikes. On the AMCA website www. antiquemotorcycle.org, there are over 60 chapters listed, and the number is constantly growing. The “Legends” Chapter in Upstate South Carolina has been an AMCA chapter since September 2015. I attended their first meeting at the Peach Blossom Diner in Spartanburg. There are many noteworthy members in the chapter including the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Famer - Pete Hill. Pete and his wife Jackie (his crew chief) raced Knucklehead Harley motorcycles from 1948 to 1994. He ran in the Top-Fuel class for many years, and won many titles. He really is a Legend! Another interesting member is Dennis Harris who owns Chesnee Classic Cycle in Chesnee, SC. He is the man responsible for the Antique Bikes on Main every July. He was involved with the forming of the Legends Chapter. The club has a very unique logo. They got permission to use the likeness of Burt Monro on the chapter logo. Burt is a real motorcycle legend. A movie was made about his exploits at the Bonneville Salt Flats called “The World’s Fastest Indian”. It’s a great movie – not just a “Biker Movie”. I own the DVD, and have enjoyed it many times. I checked the website, and learned that their next meeting would be on Sunday August 26th at the Grapevine Restaurant in Boiling Springs, SC. I had never been to the Grapevine Restaurant before so I went on-line to check out their menu. It really sounded like a great place to eat so I decided to go for the breakfast part of the meeting at 9:00AM. I left home at about 7:45AM. I wasn’t sure how long it would take to get there. I rode to I85 and battled the irregular road surface until it exited at the I85 Business Loop. I wasn’t sure that the exit to Rt 9 would be open on regular I85. I exited at Rt 9 and headed north to Boiling Springs. I was glad that I took the I85 Business Loop. The exit on I85 was closed. 32
I continued heading north – the Grapevine Restaurant was on the right. I pulled into the parking lot and parked along the back row. I was the first bike there. Before too long, Ken (the vice president of the club) rolled in riding his old flathead Harley followed by his wife on her Harley Dynaglide. We stood around, and talked for a while. Then a few more motorcycles rolled in, and we all walked inside to their separate room for their meeting. The restaurant is very large with several rooms that can be closed off for special meetings and parties. Everybody in the club seemed very cordial, and I was welcomed like an old friend. Ken was interesting. It seems like he just had a birthday – 58 years old. He was feeling old until I told him that I was 74. That quieted him down – no more complaining about his age.
If you want to get involved in the Legends Chapter, contact Bud at legendschapter@outlook.com. Come and join the fun! I left at 10:00AM when the meeting was supposed to officially start. In the parking lot, I called Cindy to tell her that I was going to take the long way home. It was such a beautiful morning that I didn’t want to waste it riding on the interstate.
I rode north on Rt 9. It had been a very long time since I rode through Boiling Springs, SC. It was a very pleasant four-lane until it went out of town. Then, it was scenic two-lane as it passed Lake Bowen. I turned right onto Rt 11 and followed it until I turned off at the Strawberry Hill Produce stand. I was the only customer when I bought a delicious cantaloupe for Cindy. I rode east on Rt 11 until I turned left onto Rt 221A. I eventually rode through another Boiling Springs – this one in North Carolina. It was very quiet with only a few college students jogging. The North Carolina Boiling Springs is much smaller than the one in South Carolina but it is home to Gardner Webb University – so it’s a “College Town”. I got home a little after 11:00AM, and stayed home the rest of the day. I enjoyed it when Danny, and his little family came over for Sunday Dinner. Baby Hannah is growing so much. She changes every time I see her. It’s fun being a grandparent.
When the waitress came around, I ordered an egg and cheese biscuit. I looked at the menu on-line and decided that it was for me. I was surprised when it came. It was like a cheese omelet on a biscuit. It was great – for under $2.00 too. As we ate, the meeting started in the corner with the officers. Bud the president came in a little late but dove right in to accomplish his tasks. They all are very dedicated to the club.

Rally Rape, In My Back Pocket!!
Opinion
My, my what in the world are things coming too! My great, great, great Grandma was molested by George Washington... or so they say....but this is not what I’m fixing to talk about here. Rally Rape is what i’ll call it..I have not attended a motorcycle rally for several years now and really don’t think I plan on attending anytime in the future . WHY? I simply refuse to be an object of price gouging...$7 even $8 for a can of beer..come on now. I can understand a little extra when you’re listening to live music and maybe a free hotdog or something, that I’ll accept. But $7 for a beer that cost wholesale off the delivery truck for about 75 cents. That Is simply insane. I’ve attended rallies as far back as 1970 and I never remember anything of this sort. Back then if the Maggie Valley Rally had 3 or 4 thousand attendees, it was consider a big deal, it was sponsored by the N C Dealers association, HD had all the latest models there for free demo rides, field games were on, dirt drags and all that good stuff--wasn’t crowded and the law didn’t hassle you and everyone had a great time. I will inject this tho, we discovered a buffet restrurant was charging bikers $3 more for the buffet than the locals, we never ate there again & spread the word too. Last rally I attended was Myrtle Beach several years back, it was a nice leisurely ride there with probably five stops along the way (Coopers Store is definitely a stop--ohh that BBQ) We stayed in Surfside since everything is right there within walking distance..I hung out right there since everything was priced within reason, food, beer even liquor drinks and all the bars included free rock n roll music. Well, I did let a friend talk me into riding down to SBB for a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon, crowded, my gosh...after walking around there awhile I decided I’d had enough..so back to Surfside where a p/u was parked with iced down 75 cent beer. A good friend of mine attended the Sturgis Rally this year, guess what, they stopped by Rapid City HD a week before opening day---Yep you guessed it BEER $5 They stopped by there on opening day and paid $7 for beer, same beer, same place just a couple a days later...crazy!! Last time I went to Sturgis 1998 I actually went into only one bar and that was in Alzata, Montana called the Stoneville Saloon. It was in the middle of nowhere, musta been 300 bikers there and the owners were glad to have us all there and beer was cheap $2...and you could even camp there for free. What my opinion of all this is: there’s folks (not bikers) out there that could care less about bikers enjoying themselves or anything of this nature, ALLS they want is to see how much MONEY they can make off the bikers in a short period of time, whether it be a weekend or a couple a weeks, that’s all they are concerned about. There are other options out there to enjoy while riding your favorite motorcycle. Me, I’d just as soon pack a couple cold ones in a my saddlebag cooler, hit the back roads and stop at Mom N Pop places where folks are just plane glad to see you. You meet the nicest people at these backroad Hole n the Wall places...as always be Cool be Safe and Enjoy the Ride! Archie Auten

William S. Harley– Harley-Davidsons Are All V-Twins Because Of Him!
Bill Harley drew up a single-cylinder motor suitable for powering a bicycle in 1901, at the age of 21. Two years later he partnered with Arthur Davidson to produce a racing motorcycle; that first HarleyDavidson was born in a 150 square-foot shed. Harley graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1907. By that time, two more Davidson brothers had joined the partnership and the company was firmly established. Harley designed and prototyped the first H-D V-twin motor that year, too. Gardiner, Mark. Dr. Dilligaf, Why is a motorcycle’s neutral position between first and second gears? Signed, Curious Rider
So neutral is keeping your starting gear separate from your operating gears. It also makes certain that when you are gearing down for a curve that you don’t wind up in neutral. If you are in neutral it is like accelerating in a curve, if that happens to you it can be quite unnerving and dangerous. Just like having neutral in a car between reverse and drive it is put there in a common sense way to keep us from harming ourselves. If this doesn’t make sense to you I’m sure everyone would be open to a suggestion for relocation. ~Dr. Dilligaf.
Dr. Dilligaf, What happens these days if a chick on the back of my bike shows her boobs... Dear Curious rider, From what I’ve observed neutral has been especially at Bike Week? placed between first and second because ~Wishful Thinking it feels safe there. No one can find it. I’ve watched people try to find neutral until they Wishful, have just given up. It sometimes is as difficult Knowing you as I do I think that the birds to locate as a good parking spot at the mall, a would stop singing, the sun would stop shinsane woman or a responsible man. If I watch ing, the ocean would no longer reach the a man or a woman find neutral easily I know shore, the earth would stop spinning on its that they’ve been riding that particular bike axis and Donald Trump would appoint Hillary a long while. I have a number of bikes and Clinton as Chief of Staff. For everyone else some make me look like an expert at finding it would just be a regular occurrence. Seen it where others make me look like I started so many at Bike Weeks here and there that riding tomorrow. If a “G” spot was as hard to the surprise is no longer there. They are like greeting cards, you have to look through a find no one would be married long. Oh, wait a second you asked why it is where whole stack so see the right one. Good luck it is. That is all about safety. Think of your at Bike Week, better take pictures if it haptransmission this way. First is simply for tak- pens because no one will believe you. ing off. All other gears are for acceleration ~Dr. Dilligaf and deceleration. When negotiating a curve you want to be in the proper gear for your exit, that is very seldom first.
