Lessons from the Open Road By K. D. Byrd
ENJOY THE SUNSHINE. Something about sunshine makes me feel better. A sunny day places joy in my heart and a spring in my step. Unfortunately, not every day of life will be filled with joy and peace. Bad days teach us to appreciate the good ones. Learn to embrace the good days with joy and be thankful for them. To decrease depression, make a list of thing for which you are thankful. Praising God for the good things will bring joy to your heart. “The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.” Psalm 126:3 “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him: Rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:6-7 Prayer: Dear God: Help me to enjoy and remember all your blessings, including the sunshine. 2018 Greenville, S.C. Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride
enjoyed the ride. The motorcycle requirements for the ride are: Tracker, Chopper, Classic, Scrambler, Bobber, Café Racer, Brat Styled, Modern Classic, Scooter, or Side Car. They are going for a specific look. Besides this ride being made up of classic and vintage styled bikes, and riders dressed dapper, it is about raising money for a very worthy cause. This year, James and his group couldn’t champion the ride. For the most part, there wasn’t going to be a Greenville DGR ride this year. That was the way it was until at the last minute, Skip Wilkenson took the bull by the horns, and said that he’d be the focal point for this year’s ride. He spent a lot of time and energy putting it together, and came up with a very unusual location - the 13 Stripes Brewery in Taylors, South Carolina – just east of Greenville, SC. His theme was “A Ride in the Country” because he didn’t have time to contact the authorities to get streets blocked off and such for the parade. It started and ended at the brewery. The ride itself traveled through the country around Greenville, SC with gathering points along the way to keep the group together - First was at the Puppy Spa on Reid School Road at the corner of Wade Hampton; Second was at Lake Robinson on Mays Bridge where pictures could be taken of the group. The ride took about 2 hours covering about 40 miles. There was a chase vehicle and group leaders. All the details were on a local Facebook page: Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2018 Greenville SC. 13 Stripes Brewery and The Farehouse (the restaurant next door) were open, and they had a designated spot for the bikes when they arrived. There was also a mustache and beard contest.
By Wally Wersching On Sunday September 30th 2018, tens of thousands of distinguished ladies and gentlemen in hundreds of cities worldwide wore their pressed tweed suits, waxed their mustaches (men only), and rode their classic and vintage styled motorcycles for awareness, and a fundraiser for men’s health. In 2012, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was created by Mark Hawwa in Sydney, Australia. It was inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper riding a classic bike while wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, while connecting vintage motorcycle communities. The first ride brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities. The success of the event encouraged Mark to use it to support a worthy cause. The Ride grew every year, in 2017, over 94,000 participants in 581 cities in 92 countries raised over $4.85M for prostate cancer research & men’s mental health programs in partnership with the Movember Foundation - the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. The Movember Foundation addresses some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. It doesn’t get government funding, so it can invest quicker in what works. In 15 years, the foundation funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Greenville, SC was started in 2016 by James Oden. There were about 35 riders for the first ride. Last year he and a group of vintage bike riders, “Upstate Vintage Riders”, started early, and the event was much more publicized. Over a hundred riders WWW.CHROMESC.COM 32
him, and I would have never found the place if I hadn’t. When I rode in at 11:45, Skip was directing traffic, and parking the bikes. I parked in the corner because I wasn’t going on the ride. I gave Skip a copy of last December’s Carolina Chrome magazine with the article I wrote about last year’s DGR. I had a few more to give away to people who were there last year. They really enjoyed seeing themselves in the magazine. Everyone had a smile on their face as they made new friends. One man rode in on his 750 Honda bobber wearing white shirt, vest, tie, and a vintage helmet with goggles. He also had an old style pipe for effect. At 12:00, Skip gathered everybody to give them the safety speech. It can be dangerous riding in a group especially when you don’t know the other riders. At 12:30, the ride got underway. I was proud to be a small part of the 3rd annual Greenville Distinguished Gentleman’s Event. They were already talking about how next year’s event would be even bigger and better if Skip could find some help. This year, more than 112,000 dapper ladies and gents rode their bikes through over 500 cities in 92 countries, and raised an incredible amount of awareness and funding for Men’s Health, with the current total at $5,700,000 on their way to the 2018 goal of $6M. When they all left, I headed home. From Rt 29, I turned left onto Rt 14, and at the stop sign, turned right on Rt 11. All the way home, I encountered showers. They were small but at times very intense. When I got close to home, the sun came out, and I started to dry off. If I had lived farther away, my clothes would have been completely dry. When I arrived at about 2:15, I was tired. Riding in the rain isn’t as much fun as it used to be. I learned from the Facebook page that it didn’t rain on the DGR parade. Those dapper suits would have been ruined.
The brewery is in one of the many old Taylor’s Mill buildings down a narrow road. The Taylors Mill has been there since 1924 but closed in 1965. Since 2006, the site has been home to many different small businesses along with many art studios. I left home at 10:00AM to go to the 13 Stripes Brewery. I headed west on Rt 74, and exited at Union Road as a slight drizzle was falling. At the stop sign, I turned left. At the next stop sign I turned right, and rode on a beautiful two-lane road. I could have taken I85 but the road is dangerous for motorcycles with the ruts in the center of the lanes. As I rode on the scenic road, it started to drizzle heavily – not enough to get soaked but enough to wet the road. Before I entered Landrum, SC, I turned onto I26 heading south toward Spartanburg. After about 15 Minutes, I exited to go onto I85 toward Greenville. The road is under construction but the road surface is OK. I exited at Rt 129 toward Greer. At the stoplight, I turned right onto Rt 29 to go to Taylors. When I started seeing signs that I was close to Taylors, I looked for the road to turn left but I must have missed it because before I knew it, I was in Greenville. I went too far so I turned around. At one of the many stoplights on Rt 29, I was next to a man on an unusual bike – a KTM. I asked if he was going to the DGR. He said yes, and I asked if I could follow him. He was a Godsend. I followed WWW.CHROMESC.COM

Soichiro Honda – An Individualist In A Nation That Prized Conformists
The son of a village Blacksmith, Honda was exposed to bicycles when they were brought into his father’s shop for repair. He had only a primary school education, but showed a striking aptitude for both engineering and business. Before starting the Honda Motor Company to make motorized bicycles in postwar Japan, he had already built up two successful businesses, one supplying piston rings to Toyota, and another making propellers for the Japanese air force. Mr. Honda was anything but a typical Japanese businessman. A rugged individualist, he refused to participate in the “keiretsu” alliances between companies, which typicaly gave big banks a strong influence in business decisions. When virtually all Japanese motorbikes had noisy, smelly two-stroke motors he decided to make a four-stroke. That typified a willingness to plan and invest for long-term success even if it meant ignoring prevailing “wisdom.” One of the motorcycles that benefited from that insight was the Super Cub step-through. It was introduced in 1958 and is still produced almost unmodified today. Honda recently sold the 50 millionth Super Cub, making it the best selling vehicle of all time. Gardiner, Mark. Dr. Dilligaf, I have an older motorcycle with a carburetor. While I was cleaning it and looking it over I noticed a small clear hose hanging off of the carb. Where should I attach it and what is it for. Sincerely, Newbie Dear Newbie, I am so glad that you sent this question in before something terrible occurred. The hose that you are referring to is used in emergency situations only. It is a resuscitation hose. When you run out of gas and refill your tank you will need to apply your lips to the open end and while keeping air from passing buy inhale deeply. This will pull fresh gas into all the places that it is needed and your motorcycle will start back up. I suggest that you have a girlfriend or your old lady do it if possible while you stand over her and watch. Best of luck to you on your new adventure. Dr. Dilligaf P.S. It’s a vent hose dummy.
Dr. Dilligaf, What is the safest way to lay down a motorcycle to avoid an accident? I’ve been given a lot of conflicting advice. Looking for an answer, Conflicted Dear Conflicted, You have come to the right place for advice. The proper way to lay a bike down to avoid an accident is to bring it safely to a stop utilizing your front and rear brakes. Step off the left side and ask a friend to help you lay it down on something soft. Whoever came up with the idea that metal on asphalt or denim and leather grinding on a surface would slow you down quicker than well applied brakes is an idiot. When you lay a bike down while moving you lose any control that you had prior to that. You are completely at the mercy of your environment and that is never good. My advice is hold on tight, steer and brake your bike so that impact is as gentle as possible. When people share their laying my bike down stories it’s mostly BS. My translation is “I freaked out, lost control and am too proud to admit it”. Dr. Dilligaf. Dr. Dilligaf, What is up with the loudest exhaust contests? Exactly what does it prove? Ears Hurting Ears Hurting, Easy. Who has the smallest penis. Dr. Dilligaf
