Lansing Branch NAACP President Calls Barrett’s Ad Grossly Misleading

Campaign ad in black newspaper has wrong election date, allegedly tries to confuse black voters
LANSING – A recent ad in the black-owned newspaper, Michigan Bulletin, from GOP House candidate Tom Barrett list the wrong election date, which could confuse black voters. Barrett’s ad calls for voters to hit the polls on Nov. 6, when Election Day actually is Tuesday, Nov. 5. This appears to be a gross attempt to mislead black voters.
The Lansing Branch NAACP stands by the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, who filed a complaint with the Ingham County Prosecutting Office alleging that Barrett’s campaign violated state law.
“This appears to be a blatant effort
to misinform and confuse black voters in Lansing, ” said Harold A. Pope, president of the Lansing Branch NAACP.
“The NAACP will do everything iln our power to help ensure that voters in Lansing have the correct information regarding Election Day, which is Nov. 5.”
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the largest and most pre-eminent civil rights organization in the nation. On April 14, 1919, the Lansing Branch was chartered under the leadership of Branch President C.A. Campbell. Lansing Branch is one of 2,220 branches in the association with the mission to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.
Lansing Tenants Tell Horror Stories, Call On Legislature to Pass Renters’ Rights Bills
LANSING, MICHIGAN — Over 40 renters and tenants gathered on Wednesday evening to share “horror stories” about housing conditions in Lansing. The gathering provided a vital platform for tenants to share their experiences with skyrocketing rents, inadequate living conditions, and mistreatment from landlords, fostering solidarity among community members.

to Council bill sponsored by Representative Emily Dievendorf.
“This event clearly articulated the frustration experienced by renters in the
Lansing area,” said Ross Fisher, a tenant union leader from Lansing Rent Is Too Damn High. “Our fellow tenants in Lansing are faced with substandard conditions, bad water, and discriminatory practices. What we heard here makes it all the more clear that we need our legislature to take immediate action.”
The event featured food and childcare to ensure accessibility for all participants, further encouraging involvement from families and individuals affected by the housing crisis.
Tenant leaders were interviewed by the press, emphasizing the importance of ongoing advocacy for tenant rights
and the necessity of systemic change in the Lansing housing market.
For those who missed the event, there are ongoing efforts to address these issues.

Wilkins, flagged them down. Tracy had reportedly been in contact with Maria earlier that morning and arrived at the residence when Maria failed to pick up her child. Upon arrival, Tracy informed officers that she could not access the home. She retrieved a garage door opener from one of the vehicles parked at the residence, which allowed police to enter the house.
Inside, the police discovered the bodies of Matthew and Maria. The Case is closed, however, some family members and private investigators have questioned the thoroughness of the investigation.
Discrepancies in the Investigation
In an interview, Matthew's mother, Donnielle Williams, shared concerns about inconsistencies in the police re-
ports. The autopsy revealed multiple gunshot wounds to Maria’s body, some of which were deemed non-fatal, raising questions about the nature of the shooting and the possibility that she had been moved. Additionally, there was no ballistics analysis, limited audio from the body cam footage, and no 3D scan of the crime scene.
These omissions led Ms. Williams to commission an independent autopsy, which highlighted contradictions with the initial police findings. According to this report, Matthew's death was due to a contact gunshot wound, but the manner of death could not be definitively determined. The absence of certain investigative procedures has left the family with lingering doubts.

Tracy Wilkins publicly claimed that Matthew had been abusive, and Maria’s sister, Aujanea, echoed this sentiment when she launched a GoFundMe campaign shortly after the tragedy, labeling Matthew a domestic abuser.
Following the closure of the case by Livonia Police Department, Ms. Williams persists in her quest for answers. She contends that the incomplete release of evidence by Livonia PD and unaddressed inquiries for additional information have hindered the pursuit of justice.

While the official narrative points to a tragic domestic incident, the family disputes this, maintaining that crucial evidence may have been overlooked or mishandled.
