Chehalis Deli We are not from the Chehalis area but we had a family reunion that was being held there and I was responsible for a simple lunch being catered. Such a huge responsibility!! You know how people are when they don’t have a decent meal and are stuck in a room together the full day! As it turned out lunch (which they delivered to the hotel for a small charge) was wonderful. We ordered sandwiches (which came with chips, cookies and a drink) and salads. The sandwiches were super fresh and tasty. The salads were so yummy too...large, fresh and gorgeous looking! One of our family members was having a birthday so we also ordered cupcakes and they turned out great as well. Centralia was chosen in 2014 as one of the top 10 spots in the nation for antiques, a title local business owners see as promising. USA Weekend voted Centralia as the 10th best spot in the nation for antiquing, stating “stores in the historic downtown are chock full of vintage finds.” Local business owners were proud and excited to see Centralia making the top 10, stating it would bring an economic boost to the area. John Regan, owner of Centralia Square Antique Mall, said the rating would help bring people in from around the nation, and even internationally. “I think these things always help because people in other parts of the country are always planning trips and we have customers coming from everywhere,” Regan explained. “Centralia will be on their places to visit.” Regan stated that most of his sales are to both out of town customers and out of country shoppers, with the largest amount of sales coming from China in the last six months of 2014. He credits the economy’s rebound, as well as the proximity of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, for bringing in customers of Asian descent. Regan believes the rating will help increase the visibility of antiques within Centralia and bring even more outsiders into the city. “Whenever a city on the map is identified for anything nationally, it becomes a place where people go if that’s what they are interested in,” Regan said. “People interested in antiques will look at Centralia as one of the places they are going to go if they go to the Northwest … If they are

interested in antiques, they are going to come here.” Another local owner of an antique store agreed with Regan, stating the new ranking will have a big impact on local businesses. “I think it will affect the whole downtown big time,” Steve Kopa, of Across the Street Antiques, said. “It’s something we need to run with and let everyone know.” Most of Kopa’s clientele also comes from outside of the city, and he believes the new title will help bring in even more visitors. “Most people in the area know that there are antique shops and districts,” Kopa said. “But a lot of people don’t know. They stumble upon us and it’s a pleasant surprise.” He believes the draw will help not only his store, but everybody involved in the antiquing business. A new owner in the antiquing ring in Centralia said currently he has been told sales are up from last year and the city’s new categorization as one of the best antiquing spots in the nation will only continue to drive business up. Dennis Koehler, owner of Black Dog Vintage, formerly known as Cattywampus Antiques, said the network of businesses in the antique profession is strong, so the title should increase traffic in all of the shops. “I think it will help a lot,” Koehler said. “It’s good for the whole community. We are all in this together and we send people to other places if we can’t help them.” The weekend newspaper magazine is a publication to USA Today and focuses on social issues, entertainment, food and travel, among other issues. The publication is known for its 10 Best lists.

Winlock Teacher Stands Up to Bullying by Letting Fourth-Grade Student Buzz Hair By Kaylee Osowski

Some teachers will go to great lengths — or short cuts — for their students’ well being. One of those teachers is Tori Nelson at Winlock Miller Elementary School, who let one of her students buzz her hair after he was bullied for his haircut. On Monday, the student, fourth-grader Matthew Finney, sat outside Nelson’s classroom and was visibly upset. He refused to come in or take his hat off. He eventually told his teacher that another student had laughed at him because of a bald spot that was visible after a weekend haircut. School policy forbids wearing hats, so Nelson tried to get him to remove it and come inside the classroom to learn. First, she offered to let him take a few minutes to regroup and join the class. He didn’t want to do that. Next, she asked if he wanted to go home and take the rest of the day to regroup. Matthew wasn’t interested in doing that either. “So I said, ‘Well, what if I let you cut my hair? … And then if he makes fun of you, he’s making fun of both of us,’” Nelson said. Matthew was surprised and unsure if his teacher was serious. She told him if he took his hat off and came into the class, he could cut her hair after lunch. The fourth-grader made it through the morning. During

lunch, Nelson’s regular hairdresser and fellow school staff member went home to get her clippers. After recess, both fourth grade classes gathered to watch as Matthew cut his teacher’s hair. “It was a pretty fun moment for all of us,” Nelson said, noting that Matthew, who is normally pretty shy and reserved, was like a “rockstar” afterward. Matthew confronted his bully after cutting Nelson’s hair and told him if he makes fun of him for his hair, he’s making fun of Miss Nelson, too. It’s not the first time the teacher has helped her students stand up to bullies in creative ways. She said another student was once being teased for wearing the same outfit multiple days in a row, so she wore the same clothes for about a week and a half. “If a kid needs something that’s going to make their day better, then who am I to deny them that?” she said. The Winlock School District’s motto is “Be the Difference.” “That’s what I’m trying to do,” she said.

Eye examinations are recommended to identify potential vision problems in their infancy stages. Many eye experts advise that the average person should have an eye exam every one to three years, depending on his or her age. The Many Benefits of Massage Therapy Massages aren't just sultry oils and New Age music. They can actually be very good for overall health. Massage therapy is beneficial in various ways. Massage is no longer just available in upscale health clubs or luxury spas. It has something to do with the effect of massage on delta waves, which are the brain waves connected to deep sleep. There is some evidence that massage can also increase white blood cell counts, promoting improved immunity. Many people rely on massages to relieve pain. According to a report published in 2011 in the American College of Physicians "Annals of Internal Medicine," massage helps people in pain feel and function better than those who do not receive treatment.
