W.F. West’s Ka’imi Henry (with ball) celebrates a touchdown with teammates Brandon White (5) and Jordan Thomas (17) in a win over Rochester on Oct.6
A Plethora of Offensive Options Nole Wollan’s been more than solid at quarterback for the Bearcats this year, completing 64 of 118 passes for 844 yards and 11 touchdowns. “It all goes through him. That’s one kid we have to get after,” Tiger coach Jeremy Thibault said. “I’m pretty impressed with him this year, and he just doesn’t make a lot of mistakes.” W.F. West’s offense, though, has been nothing if not multi-faceted. Ka’imi Henry’s been a steady starting running back; Zach Sloan and Lafe Johnson have both been viable goal-line options; and speedy sophomore Jaiyden Camoza has been a highlight waiting to happen.
And that’s only in the run game. Senior inside receiver Tyson Guerrero has been reliable; 6-foot-8 Brandon White can go over almost any defender for a jump ball; Wyatt Deskins and Leandre Gaines are both threats at tight end; and Jordan Thomas, 6-foot-3 and athletic, is working his way into more targets. “We do have the ability to really spread the ball around and utilize guys,” Bearcat coach Bob Wollan said. “We’ve been able to throw the ball effectively when we’ve really wanted to, and it’s been effective.” Big plays have also been more frequent this year than in the recent past, he added. “It’s been hard to go 10 or 12 plays all the time without a mistake,” Wollan said, “so it’s been fun to have the ability to score on some big plays and have some quick drives.”

The senior has piled up over 900 yards with 10 touchdowns. “He’s quick and really low to the ground, and he lifts weights — obviously he’s a pretty strong kid,” Thibault said. “He just makes a lot of kids miss. He’s able to stop and go pretty quickly, and he’s tough, too.” He’s been all over the field for Centralia. “We moved him to fullback, and then wing, and some receiver — we just try to get him the ball,” Thibault said. “I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but he’s our best player and I’m gonna try to have him carry it.” Bearcat coach Bob Wollan agreed. “Your goal every week is to take away their best player,” Wollan said. “You don’t normally easily take them away, but you know where they’re at, and I’m sure that’s certainly going to be the case this game (with Pineda).”

The BEARCAT Defense Star of the Show: Linebacker Camden Bull
Matt Baide
Camden Bull’s the latest in a line of relatively undersized, but hard-hitting, star inside linebackers heading up the Bearcat defense. “Camden’s just been a consummate leader for our Camden defense, not only for his effort, but his study habits, Bull his attention to detail — he just kind of encompasses all of it,” Wollan said. “When he walks into the room, he’s not the guy you look at and say ‘He’s the guy,’ but you put him on the football field and he just continues to make plays.” Bull plays bigger and hits harder than his listed 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds. “It’s almost a lost art; he’s a great tackler,” Wollan said. “He gets guys on the ground. It’s refreshing, it’s productive, and it’s a big reason our defense has been as successful as it has been at this point.”

defensive line, he’s a big physical presence,” Wollan said. “He’s a guy you’re going to have to account for.”
STANDOUTS IN THE MIDDLE Middle linebackers Jerod Frias and Michael Newman have been the backbone of the Tigers’ defense. “They’re just getting it,” Centralia coach Jeremy Thibault said. “They kind of lead the defense.” Frias, a student of the game with his study habits and penchant for film, was the team’s Tiger of the Week after the Tumwater loss. “He’s been our guy,” Thibault said. Newman, a senior who hasn’t played since his freshman year, has been something of a diamond in the rough, Thibault said. “Newman’s just a wrecking ball, like Mongo. He just goes and hits people,” he said. “I don’t know what we would do if he didn’t turn out.” RIGHT: Centralia’s Michael Newman (32) tackles Kelso’s Max McDaniel during a nonleague game at Tiger Stadium.

In Review: 2016 Swamp Cup
Emery, Bearcats Run Past Rival Tigers in Swampy Win By The Chronicle
W.F. West’s offense isn’t particularly dynamic, flashy or explosive. It is, however, nearly weather-proof — not to mention accompanied by a stout defense and solid special-teams play — all of which comes in handy, especially in circumstances like Friday night, when the Battle of the Swamp lives up to its name. The Bearcats piled up 291 yards on the ground behind a steady offensive line and the defense pitched its third-straight shutout, all of which was more than enough to dispatch rival Centralia, 27-0, at Tiger Stadium. “It’s pretty big, you know,” Bearcat senior fullback Kolby Steen said. “It’s always fun to shut Centralia out.” Austin Emery ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns, and W.F. West won the Twin Cities rivalry match for the eighthstraight season, improving to 8-0 on the year and setting up a senior night showdown with No. 2-ranked Tumwater on Friday in Chehalis for the Evergreen 2A Conference championship. On Friday, though, the game was still too close to call until a key special teams play at the end of a sloppy third quarter that featured three fumbles, an interception and three turnovers. After a quick three-and-out from deep in Centralia territory, Tiger punter Kolby Baird delivered a punt to midfield, where return man Drew Forgione took advantage of a big block by Dakota Hawkins to pack the rock back to the 6-yard line. On the next play Steen

pushed his way into the end zone. “It’s not an easy night to catch punts, and their punter’s really good,” Bearcat coach Bob Wollan said. “But that’s one of those big plays that you never know what can happen, and special teams created that touchdown, so that was great.” Steen’s touchdown gave the Bearcats a 20-0 cushion with 3.2 seconds left in the third quarter, and Ka’imi Henry’s
5-yard scoring scamper in the fourth — set up by his own 30-yard run — was the icing on the cake. The 27-point margin of victory, though, betrayed what was a touch-andgo first half. “The Centralia/Chehalis game has always got its little twists and turns,” Wollan said. “It was 13-0 at halftime, and we didn’t feel like this game was over at all.”

turnovers,” Wollan said. “We completely changed what we do, schematically, even a little more so than we’ve done before. Just with some things nobody really cares about.” The Bearcats have been a steady presence in the state’s top 10 rankings, and their Week 9 game at Tumwater could be for the Evergreen 2A Conference title — just like last season. “They’re just always around, and always play the league champ in a meaningful game,” Thibault said of W.F. West. “That’s where we want to be. We want to make that last Friday night mean something.”
Playoff Implications Through seven weeks of action, W.F. West (3-0 league) is tied for first place in the Evergreen 2A Conference with Tumwater (2-0 league), meaning a Swamp Cup win secures a top-two finish and the right to host a District 4 winner-to-state crossover game. The
Bearcats play at Tumwater next week to close out the regular season in what could be the de facto EvCo championship game. Centralia, meanwhile, is still fighting for a playoff berth. The Tigers haven’t been to the postseason since 2015, when they lost to Hockinson in a crossover game. Last week’s win over Rochester, combined with Aberdeen’s 0-3 league record, means that even with a loss against W.F. West the Tigers should have a crossover spot on the line in their Week 9 home regularseason finale with the Bobcats. CROSSOVER NOTES: The Greater St. Helens 2A League champ hosts the EvCo fourth-place team, with the winner taking the top seed into the state playoffs. The EvCo champ hosts the GSHL runner-up; the EvCo runner-up hosts the GSHL’s third-place team; and the GSHL runner-up hosts the EvCo’s third-place team. Hockinson (7-0, 5-0 league) is the frontrunner down south, with Washougal (5-2, 3-2) in second place. R.A. Long, Columbia River and Woodland are currently in a three-way tie for third.
SWAMP CUP HISTORY: A LOOK BACK 10 Years Ago 2007: The 100th anniversary of the Twin Cities’ football rivalry brought out some 4,500 fans in Chehalis, only to see Centralia survive with a 3523 win. Teigen Goodeill ran for 186 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries to lead Centralia, while quarterback Griffin Squires ran for 168 yards on 22 carries with 142 passing yards on 9 of 17 attempts. Levi Dean added a touchdown pass to Craig O’Brien on a halfback pass for W.F. West, and Devon Hughes ran in a TD for Centralia.
downs and kicked a 39-yard field goal, while Wilson ran 22 times for 142 yards for Chehalis.
30 Years Ago 1987: W.F. West beat Centralia, 35-6, to land in a three-way tie for first in the Black Hills League. Quarterback Eric Ferrier ran for 71 yards and a touchdown, and Ray Asher, John Olson, Shawn Reynolds and Marty Marquez also scored rushing touchdowns for the Bearcats. Frank Homan ran in Centralia’s only score.
20 Years Ago 1997: The Twin Cities rivals played twice in 1997,
and Centralia both games. In Week 2, Centralia quarterback Jason Stumm kicked a 23-yard field goal with 2:14 left to give the Tigers a 28-27 win. Stumm was 9 of 16 passing for 266 yards, with Kyle Donahue catching five passes for 206 yards and a touchdown. Guillermo Young ran 24 times for 109 yards and a score to lead Centralia, while Lann Olson had 22 carries for 130 yards and two TDs for Chehalis. Leonard Wilson added 20 carries for 114 yards for the Bearcats. … The teams met again in Week 10, with Centralia’s 15-7 win securing the 3A Rivers League South Division title. Stumm was 7 of 19 for 191 yards, ran in two touch-
40 Years Ago 1977: The rivalry game had two installments, with Centralia winning 53-12 on Sept. 17 and 20-0 on Nov. 3. In the first game, Lee Neumann ran 13 times for 178 yards and a touchdown, with Randy McNurlin and Randy Harris each adding rushing TDs for the Tigers. Quarterback Jeff Spencer threw a pair of touchdown passes to junior end Bob Wollan. For Chehalis, Robert Morris ran in a touchdown, and quarterback Don Blaser hit Steve Aselton for a TD. In the second game, Neumann threw an option TD pass to Syd Hampson, and Spencer ran in one score and added a TD pass to Wollan.
