Weeknight Activities for the Whole Family Many families have their own routines on weeknights. Kids may tackle their homework before dinner, and once everyone’s plates are clean, family members may go their separate ways, spending time online with friends or watching their favorite television programs on the couch.

The following are a handful of activities that can help bring families closer together.

Movie night:

Writing activities:

Family walk:

Family movie night is a tradition for many families, and parents who want to spend more time together as families may find that movie night is a great way to share a few laughs or even facilitate discussions about important topics broached in certain films. Each week, let a different family member pick that week’s movie and ask him or her to explain his or her choice and why they think it’s a film the whole family will enjoy. Let the kids join you as you get the popcorn ready, or make special treats to enjoy while the movie is playing.

Ask each family member to create brief lists on a range of topics, whether it’s a list of favorite books, countries each person wants to visit or a bucket list of things each family member wants to do at one point in their lives. Allow around 10-15 minutes for each person to write his or her lists, and then discuss each person’s list, including the inspiration behind each item that made it onto the lists.

Walking is a great way for parents to instill a love of physical activity in their children, and nightly walks also make great opportunities for families to discuss the goings-on in their lives. Weather permitting, take a family walk after dinner each night, which can help make your family healthier and strengthen the bonds between family members.

10 • May 2016 • Southwest Washington Family

Crafts night: Arts and crafts night is another great way for families to spend time together. Parents can choose age-appropriate projects that can help kids and adults alike tap into their creative sides. Solicit ideas when planning crafts night so everyone feels like they played their part.

Game night: Stock up on some classic games and take turns choosing which game to play each week. Games can take up a few minutes to a few hours to play, and that’s a great opportunity for families to share some laughs.

Nights together as a family do not need to be limited to weekends. Parents willing to get a little creative can enjoy family-friendly evenings no matter what day it happens to be.

Teacher Feature

Sandra Johnson Edison Elementary, Kindergarten

“She engages with each student personally and helps them out one on one, even though she has 24 students to keep an eye on. She also gets involved with the parents of each student to let them know how their child is doing in class. She also asks suggestions of the students in her class on what kinds of projects they want to do in class and makes learning fun.” ~nominator, Colin J. How long have you been teaching? I have been teaching for almost 25 years. What inspires you the most/what is your favorite part of teaching? I love to laugh with my students (jokes only a 5-year- old would love.) I also love to see the spark in a child’s eye when they get it! (I can do this!) What hobbies, interests, do you enjoy outside of the classroom? I love to read, work in my garden, play at the lake, hang out with family, camping and skiing.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be a teacher. My brothers, sister and cousins were my first students. What made you decide to become a teacher? I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in children’s lives. What is a favorite teaching memory? I love it when my students tell me they want to be a teacher just like me! Last year one child followed with, “then when you pass away I can teach in this room.” I take this as a huge compliment!

Sandra Johnson with nominator, Colin J. Do you have a mantra or quote you are always telling your students? Our class mantra is “Never Give Up!” Is there anything else you would like to add? My first goal is that my students love school. I hook them early with great books like Elephant and Piggy by Mo Willems. If I can do that, the rest of my job is a piece of cake.

Send in nominations for your favorite teacher, student, class or coach. Mail to 321 N. Pearl, Centralia, WA 98531 or email jviall@swwfamily.com. If you email us and we don’t reply we haven’t received your message. Please give us a call at 807-8217.

Clean Hands

Washing your hands is one of the most important ways to stay healthy. It keeps germs from spreading and helps keep you and your loved ones from getting sick. Preeti Kondal, the medical director for infection prevention at Providence Centralia and for Providence’s Southwest Washington Region, said it’s an important thing to learn and practice early on in life. “I think that our hands are the way that people can get germs and infections,” she said. “For children it’s very important to wash their hands so they can stay healthy and not get sick.” Since we use our hands for everything, Kondal stated it is important to use soap and water to get rid of bacteria or germs that get onto your hands.

Some of the most important times to make sure your hands are clean, according to Kondal are: • Before and after you go to the bathroom. • Before eating — especially if you were out exploring, after playing with pets, and after coughing or sneezing. When you cough or sneeze, germs can get on your hands, and they can be easily spread if not washed. Kondal continues, “We always say there’s a lot of viruses and bacteria. They can get on your hands and if you eat (before washing) they can get in you.” As a kid, it’s important to make sure your hands stay clean, but it’s also important for others to learn early and practice safe hand washing practices. “This is something that is not just important for kids, but as they get older, it’s an important thing to learn and to keep doing,” she said.

Just like you wouldn’t want to get sick, your family and friends don’t want to either, so by making sure your hands are clean, you can help keep everyone healthy. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: How Should You Wash Your Hands? Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Life After Twelve: Options for Kids Who have

“Aged Out” of Daycare by Carrina Stanton of Chehalis

I

t’s a Wednesday afternoon and Ryan Piles is doing something he loves: playing basketball with kids. Piles, Rochester branch director for the Boys & Girls Club of Thurston County, began his career with the Boys & Girls Club 10 years ago as a volunteer playing basketball during special Friday night open gyms. He said what he believes is the importance of a program such as the Boys & Girls Club is not only providing a safe place for kids after school, but a place they are enriched, encouraged and empowered. “It’s the relationships that the kids, especially the teens, have with the staff,” he said of what

he believes is the cornerstone of a program such as this. “They come because they have an adult figure they can trust. All their problems or the cool moments in their life, they can share with an adult who may or may not be at home.” The Boys & Girls Club is one of the local programs bridging an important question many

working parents have: "What do I do with my children after school and during the summer months once they are too old to attend a daycare facility?" David Beard, education policy and advocacy director for Schools Out Washington, an agency that advocates for the development of high quality after school programming,

Washington Administrative Code allows state licensed childcare centers for ages one month through 12 years. That means that after the age of 12, kids in Washington have “aged out” of the official childcare system.

said an estimated one-fifth of school-aged children in Washington are without adult supervision after school. While Washington has no law stipulating what age kids can legally be left home alone, the Department of Social and Health Services suggests it may not be safe for kids younger than 10. But advocating for programming to serve older kids isn’t just about safety, Beard noted, it’s about giving them tools to succeed. “Parents work and need care for their children,” Beard said. “And not just somewhere to go and watch TV. Somewhere to go and continue to learn.”

That’s the belief of a steering group for about 40 in Chehalis working to bring a Boys & Girls Club to that city. The group has located a site off Market Boulevard and successfully raised the money needed. Board President Garth Haakenson said the idea was born out of a community needs survey two years ago that identified that only 20 percent of graduating seniors in Chehalis go on to earn a four-year degree. Haakenson’s group would like to see that number grow to 60 percent, and they believe that will be accomplished by providing youth with a safe, positive place to be. “It’s a place of positive actions to help them become contributing members of society. A lot of bad things happen when kids don’t have a productive place to be in those hours between school and home,” Haakenson said.

The Chehalis Boys & Girls Club is expected to be open by January 2017, and Tenino is also looking toward starting a site for the 2016-2017 school year. The club is open to the public and charges a $25 annual membership fee per child, with scholarships available if needed. The Rochester Boys and Girls Club which is located at the Rochester Community Center, has an average daily attendance of about 80 kids, about 15-20 of whom are teens. The program offers everything from sports and games to computers, art, homework help, snacks and a movie on Fridays. Teens have a special area that is just for them, as well as teens-only activities that include an elected leadership team and a store where they raise money for special projects such as adopting a family each Christmas. Piles said giving older kids their own space is important as the center serves kids ages 5-18, but what a kindergartener wants in an

May 2016 • Southwest Washington Family • 19

after-school program is very different from the needs of a high school freshman. “Teens are more low key. They want to sit and talk,” Piles said. “(The teen center) gives them a sense of belonging, a sense of their own space.” If you are a parent facing the decision of after school activities for your child that has become too old to attend a daycare, Elana Sims, MSW, call center lead for the ChildCare Aware Family Center, said her statewide agency is working to be one of your resources. Sims said her agency keeps a database of licensed childcare

centers but is also in the midst of compiling a list of programs for older children who have “aged out” of the system.

said parents should call the school their child attends to find out about options that might be right for their child.

Sims said school districts can also be a great resource for parents. Many schools offer after-school and summer enrichment programs for all ages served, such as the Summer Math Academy being offered by Chehalis Middle School this July. School sports, clubs and other extracurricular activities can also provide safe and structured places for kids to be. Debby Gregory, personnel/ communication manager for the Chehalis School District,

“Keep them learning. Keep them busy. Keep them off the streets and give them the options to do great things,” Sims said.

Hours: Open all year with the best flow times between March and June. Cost: Free

Northwest Forest Pass required. For more details and where to buy a pass, please visit fs.usda.gov.

Cathedral Falls can be accessed after an easy 1-mile hike on the Goat Creek Trail. The trail is home to huge old red cedar and hemlock trees that survived the eruption in 1980.

Cathedral Falls gets its name from the massive overhang the falls plunge from. The Goat Creek trail traverses behind the falls via the undercut, which has a massive ceiling like a church cathedral.

The trail continues past the falls for those who want to explore further.

Explore & Discover

Local Trails by Tiffany Venters of Salkum

As memory of a cold winter fades from our minds, who else is ready to get out and enjoy the sunshine? Nothing is better for the soul than connecting with nature, but you don’t have to drive for hours to find solitude. Residents of Lewis County and surrounding areas are blessed with an abundance of trails and parks just a short drive away. Day hikes are the perfect choice for Western Washington’s variable weather and an especially good option if you have time restraints. Starting with a trail that is easy for all ability levels will increase your chances of a pleasant experience and generate enthusiasm for future trips. A comfortable pair of athletic shoes, a couple layers of clothing and some sunscreen is all you truly need, though I recommend bringing a backpack to carry essential items, to stow garbage and to hold clothing if you get too warm.

Willapa Hills Trail

The Willapa Hills Trail system is a Lewis County favorite that follows the extinct railway that once connected Chehalis to North Bend. One of its five trailheads is just minutes away from downtown Chehalis. The railroad grade is mostly paved, making it bike and stroller friendly. It works its way through farmlands, old train trestles, over the Chehalis and Newaukum Rivers. There is always something to discover along the path.

Rainbow Falls State Park

Nestled in 139 acres of old growth forest in west Lewis County you will find Rainbow Falls State Park. There is wildlife viewing, fishing, camping, 3-miles of interconnected trails and the falls itself to make this area unforgettable.

Mima Mounds

For some mystery, head out to Thurston County’s Mima Mounds, near Littlerock. Walk among the mysterious mounds that are a national natural landmark. Have fun speculating why and how these geological wonders exist. There are almost 3-miles of trails with a half-mile being paved.

Lewis and Clark State Park

Lewis and Clark State Park on Jackson Highway is a popular destination, comprised of 621 acres, including one of the last old-growth forests in the state. There are 5 miles of hiking trails for the family to enjoy, including a half-mile interpretive trail featuring information on the parks old growth and Civil Conservation Corp work.
