ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: BOYS Introducing Athletes of the Year The Chronicle and LewisCountySports.com share stories and photographs focused on local athletes every day. This year, we decided to go a step further with the first annual Athletes of the Year awards. The Chronicle Sports staff made selections with input from local coaches, along with statistics from the past year. Please join us in celebrating each of the finalists. WYATT STANLEY, NAPAVINE: ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Stanley, Napavine’s burly three-sport star, pulled off a trick that hasn’t been done in Lewis County in years: He swept the MVP awards. Yes, the 6-foot-3 quarterback/forward/pitcher was a threetime Central 2B League MVP this season. During the fall, he was the SWW 2B League Mountain Division Offensive MVP (and a top-notch linebacker to boot); during the winter he led the Tigers to an undefeated run through the regular season and averaged a double-double to win the C2BL MVP; and, in the spring, he pitched the Tigers to yet another C2BL championship and split the C2BL baseball MVP award with Adna’s Spencer Burdick. Whether Napavine needed a scrambling, momentum-shifting 40-yard third-down completion in the Tacoma Dome, a series of second-half 3-pointers in a loser-out regional game or a grand slam in the district tournament, Stanley was the guy — and as far as the 2016-17 Lewis County sports scene went, there was no one easier for the spotlight to find. He’ll play baseball for Big Bend Community College next year.
HODGES BAILEY, CENTRALIA
DALTON YODER, TOLEDO
Yoder’s high school resume doesn’t leave a whole lot to be desired. He led Toledo to the state football semifinals twice; he reached the state wrestling finals three times; and he won a state championship as a junior on the Indians’ baseball team. And, on the biggest stages, he didn’t disappear; the Indians’ football team was undefeated until the state semifinals, when they gave Napavine its best game of the season, behind a spectacular performance by the Southern Oregon University bound quarterback (who’ll play tight end in college). In the winter, meanwhile, he seemed destined for the state heavyweight championship before an injury led to a heartbreaking defeat in the finals.
Bailey led the Evergreen 2A Conference in scoring and was never really kept in check this basketball season, during which his Tigers went 17-9 and reached the regional playoffs. Not content with being a one-sport standout, however, Bailey also played center field and hit leadoff for the Tiger baseball team, and will play both sports at The Masters University in Santa Clarita, California, next year.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: GIRLS DEVANIE KLEEMEYER, ADNA
Kleemeyer was a force in three sports for the Pirates, scoring 29 goals in 19 games for Adna’s third-in-state girls soccer team, averaging doublefigures for the Pirates’ regional-qualifying girls basketball team, and coming into her own as a high jumper and long jumper in her first season of prep track and field in the spring.
LEXIE STRASSER, WF WEST
Strasser was a force in the paint for the Bearcats’ third-in-state girls basketball team, and dominated in the circle for a W.F. West softball team that, during her four years in crimson and grey, went 48-0 in Evergreen 2A Conference play.
MOLLIE OLSON, NAPAVINE: ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
What didn’t Olson do? The Napavine junior was the co-MVP of The Chronicle’s AllArea volleyball team, won the All-Area Girls Basketball MVP award, and stood out on the track when spring rolled around. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter, guard and hurdler was nearly unparalleled in all three sports, and has been for three years for the Tigers.

BOYS WRESTLING DALTON YODER, TOLEDO
Yoder was a two-time state runner-up at 220 pounds before his senior season and seemed destined to break the curse as a senior in the State 1B/2B tournament. Moving up to the heavyweight classification, he cruised through the opening rounds with pins, before a knee injury in the finals — which, at that point, he was leading 1-0 — proved too much for the Toledo standout to overcome.
HUNTER ARREDONDO, WF WEST
DAMON THOMAS, WF WEST: WRESTLER OF THE YEAR
Thomas, a senior wrestling at 138 pounds, finished second in the State 2A finals, falling only in a dramatic overtime match, 4-3, on the state’s biggest stage in the Tacoma Dome. On the season Thomas went a whopping 46-3, and walked through his bracket in both the Evergreen 2A Conference tournament and regionals.
The Bearcat heavyweight reached the finals in the State 2A tournament in Tacoma, only to meet up with a local rival in Tumwater Cy Hicks. He took Hicks to overtime, before the Thunderbird was able to escape with a 3-1 overtime victory.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY AUSTEN APPERSON, ADNA XC RUNNER OF THE YEAR
The speedy sophomore’s body of work was even more impressive given that he only rarely practiced with the Pirate cross country team; he spent a good chunk of his time on the football field, where he was Adna’s backup quarterback. Still, Apperson entered eight 5K races in the fall and won five of them; he finished second in the District 4 championships only to Northwest Christian’s Luke Schilter in a personalrecord 15:51, and finished fourth in the state.
KELIN PASKO, ROCHESTER
The Warrior junior won three 5K races during the fall and finished ninth in the District 4 championships in 16:48. He went on to the state championships, where he placed in the top third of the 2A field in 17:07.
ZACH WRIGHT, ONALASKA
Wright, a sophomore, saved his best race for the District 4 championships, where he finished seventh in a personalrecord 16:28 — only the second time all season he broke the 17-minute mark. He went on to place 13th in the state a week later.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY LAURYN APPERSON, ADNA
Apperson, a sophomore, finished 10th at the State 2B championships in Pasco, with a time of 20:31. She set a personal record in the District 4 championships with a 19:55 time.

FOOTBALL WYATT STANLEY, NAPAVINE: FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The Chronicle’s All-Area MVP had what’s likely the best single-season quarterback numbers in Lewis County history: 3,197 yards, 46 touchdowns and six interceptions, which works out to 228 yards and 3.3 touchdowns a game. He passed for an eye-popping 476 yards and six touchdowns against Morton-White Pass, and ran for 500 yards and nine touchdowns. He was voted the 2B Player of the Year by the Associated Press, and won the SWW 2B Mountain Division Offensive MVP award. Oh, and he led Napavine to a 14-0 record and the State 2B championship.
DALTON YODER, TOLEDO
As the big quarterbackdefensive end went, so went the Indians. Yoder, whose Toledo team made it all the way to the semifinals before falling to Napavine in a tight contest, won the SWW 2B River Division Offensive MVP award after a season of tormenting opponents with his over-the-top strong arm and ham-hock legs. For the season Yoder tallied 858 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground while throwing for 920 yards and 14 touchdowns on a near 50-percent completion rate.
TYLER PALLAS, WF WEST
The big, strong twoway senior lineman anchored an offensive line that, game in and game out, gave the Bearcat backfield plenty of room to rack up yards. And on the defensive end, Pallas — who’s headed for Montana State University-Northern to continue his career — shared the Evergreen 2A Conference Defensive MVP award with Black Hills’ Austin Daisa.

BOYS BASKETBALL MATT POQUETTE, MWP
The 6-foot-5 junior forward moved into the driver’s seat for 12-10 Morton-White Pass this year and was a nearly unstoppable force in the middle, averaging 24 points and 15 rebounds a game and providing highlight-reel dunks on a nightly basis. He started off like gangbusters, scoring 39 points with 20 rebounds in a season-opening loss to La Center and never cooled off, putting up big numbers while helping a team with minimal crunchtime varsity experience secure a spot in the playoffs and land on the Central 2B League’s All-League first team.
WYATT STANLEY, NAPAVINE
The three-sport star averaged 13.7 points, 13.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists and 2.6 steals a game for a Napavine team that was undefeated during the regular season and finished sixth in the state.
HODGES BAILEY, CENTRALIA: BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Bailey, The Chronicle’s 2017 All-Area Boys Basketball team MVP, rewrote the District 4 2A tournament record book in February, scoring 42 against Mark Morris to shatter the single-game record and tie the Centralia record. Two games later he scored 36 against Columbia River, breaking the four-game tournament scoring record — a mark he’d actually tied in three games — by 36 points. He crossed the 1,000-point plateau early this season, despite moving to Centralia before his sophomore year and missing most of his junior campaign with an injury. In his senior campaign he scored 26.4 points a game and finished his 55-game career in the Hub City with 1,290 points (23.5 a game) and hit 432 free throws at an 85.9 percent clip.

Burdick led the way, allowing just two earned runs during the regular season and striking out a whopping 81 batters. He was no slouch at the plate, either, hitting .458 and leading the Pirates — which, behind Burdick’s arm, won the 2015 state baseball championship — back to the regional playoffs this season.
DAKOTA HAWKINS, WF WEST
Hawkins, a junior with a flair for the dramatic, was a key component for the Evergreen 2A Conference and District 4 champion Bearcats. The right-handed pitcher worked 30 innings in the regular season, with a 1.87 ERA and 41 strikeouts, while hitting .348 with 22 RBIs and a pair of home runs.
TYSON GUERRERO, WF WEST
The junior pitcher and center fielder did a little bit of everything, from making spectacular plays in the outfield to dominating on the mound and providing pop in the leadoff spot. Guerrero hit .433 with 19 RBIs through the regular season, while posting a 1.87 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 30 innings.

SOFTBALL OLIVIA DEAN, WF WEST
Dean was the leadoff sparkplug for the potent Bearcat offense, hitting .479 with 11 RBIs and three triples from the top slot in the batting order. The junior also provided heads-up play at the shortstop position in a formidable defense, with a .971 fielding percentage.
LEXIE STRASSER, WF WEST
The Central Washington University-bound righthander was a tall order in the circle for her opponents, posting an 8-0 record with a 0.42 ERA and 54 strikeouts against 13 walks. She was no slouch at the plate, either, hitting .415 with two homers and 15 RBIs through 13 regularseason games.
DAKOTA BROOKS, PWV: SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Brooks’ Titans hit their stride in her senior season, and the two-way threat was a big reason why. Pe Ell-Willapa Valley put together an undefeated campaign in the always-tough Central 2B League, with Brooks — the defending C2BL MVP — hitting a whopping .609 with a 1.053 slugging percentage through the Titans’ 18-0 start to the season. As a pitcher, meanwhile, she went 10-0 with a 0.60 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 47 innings of work, and she’ll take her talents to Centralia College next season.

COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR
NAPAVINE FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR
Tiger coach Josh Fay and his staff — including assistants Tyson Wilson, Bryan Demarest, Chris Stone, Josh Seymour and Ryan Parker — put together a perfect season this fall, coaching Napavine to a 14-0 record and the State 2B football championship while reaching the state finals for the third year in a row. Fay also recorded the 100th win of his career this season, a tenure that includes two state titles.
W.F. WEST SOFTBALL
The Bearcats undefeated Evergreen 2A Conference campaign is impressive in and of itself, but head coach Mike Keen and his staff — which includes Jenny Taylor, Kevin Zylstra, Caty Lieseke and Meagan Corey — have seen this type of success before. The Bearcats went into districts this season as the five-time defending champs, and the class of 2017 finished the regular season with a 48-0 record in league games.
UNITED SOCCER
Coaching the only Toledo-Winlock combination program can be logistically challenging, but United coach Horst Malunat and his staff — including Rob Potestio, Ric Shepherd, Pablo Jimenez and Noel Vazquez — have made it look easy. United ran off 17 straight wins after an opening loss, ran the table in 1A Trico League play, and won its second-straight District 4 championship this spring.
