SWWF 2018
A Touch of Country When Lewis County puts on a fair, we go all out. The 2018 Southwest Washington Fair is no exception, and in addition to a long list of returning favorites, this year’s week-long celebration of rural life includes a number of new offerings, likely destined to become future traditions. The fair will crown, or more accurately “cape,” its 50th Little Miss Friendly this year. Each year a girl between 8 and 10 years old is named the “living logo” of the Southwest Washington Fair, and is ever-present throughout the week, spreading smiles and stickers wherever she goes. And what fair would be complete without a rodeo? This year, the fair is bringing back a wild horse race to the arena as well. “It hasn’t been done in decades,” Fair Manager Tamara Hayes told The Chronicle. The event involves teams of riders putting a saddle on an unbroken horse and attempting to ride it across a finish line. The event is sanctioned through the National Indian Rodeo Association and all of the competitors are of Native American descent. The fair’s Junior Livestock Auction is
also celebrating a milestone 50-year anniversary this year. The auction this year will offer animals from 220 exhibits for sale. All of the animals — steers, hogs, rabbits and fowl — have been raised by kids in 4-H or the Future Farmers of America. “For a lot of the kids, this is how they earn money for school clothes or for their first car,” said Junior Livestock Auction Treasurer Katie Gift. Daily offerings include rides, competitions for kids, animal and exhibit judging, law enforcement and Lewis County PUD expos, and performances by local, regional and national performing artists. This year, all-female AC-DC cover band Hell’s Belles will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday night on the Saloon Stage. As always, entertainment is free with the cost of admission. “They draw huge crowds wherever they go,” said Pat Slusher, marketing coordinator for the fair, on Hell’s Belle’s. “People are excited about their appearance here.” Whether you’re going to the fair as a competitor, parent, rodeo-lover or spectator, there will be something just for you. We’ll see you at the 2018 Southwest Washington Fair.

50 Years of Little Miss Friendly ‘LIVING LOGOS’: Women Reflect on Good Times at Southwest Washington Fair By Alex Brown abrown@chronline.com
When the Southwest Washington Fair kicks off Aug. 14, a local schoolgirl will be named its “living logo” — Little Miss Friendly. She will be the 50th to hold the title. “It’s very, very instrumental in the success of the fair,” said Fair Association President Jerry Owens. “It gives a great opportunity for the fair to use young people like this to attract attention to their peers.” Owens doesn’t just see Little Miss Friendly from an administrative perspective. In 2006, his granddaughter Bailey Peters earned the title. “It’s a really cool experience that our community has for young people,” said please see FRIENDLY, page 5

Peters, who graduated from Washington State University in May. “The actual role of Little Miss Friendly is just so fun. You get to meet so many people. I don’t think I’ve ever passed out so many stickers.” Peters’ mother went into labor with her while singing at the fair’s opening ceremony, and she grew up participating as a member of 4-H and Future Farmers of America. “(The fair) was always a part of the summer,” she said. Centralia Mayor Lee Coumbs, who has long been involved with the fair and served as fair manager for five years, said the Little Miss Friendly program is crucial. “It’s very important,” he said. “It not only brings in the youth, which the fair is definitely geared toward. It’s also leadership training, even for those who just apply and go through the process. … It’s a good face for the fair, and a good experience for the girls.” Little Miss Friendly started in 1968, a
contest for 8-to-10-year-olds to represent the fair. Sandy Vasilauskas signed up for the program the following year and was named the second Little Miss Friendly. She found the role to be a good fit. “You got to be in every little parade that there was in all of Lewis County. You got to go to the fair every single day, and they gave you unlimited access to all the rides,” she said. “They didn’t have to ask me to be friendly to people, and that’s probably why I was chosen.” Camille Minnie May Curfman, who held the title in 2005, said she will always be proud of her time as Little Miss Friendly. “It’s a well-known part of the community, and people take a lot of pride in it. It’s such a cool part of history,” she said. “It was the time of my life.” Though the contest and the role have changed some over the years, organizers say it’s still about finding someone who will be a good ambassador for the fair. It’s a huge commitment, said Little Miss Friendly coordinator Susan Barlow. Hopefuls must turn in an application stating why they want the position, then go through an interview process with

Rodeo Brings Wild Horse Race to Western Washington For First Time in Decades
Matt Baide / mbaide@chronline.com

No one in western Washington has officially raced wild horses in decades, but that will change this year at the Southwest Washington Fair. The 2018 Rodeo & Wild Horse Race will include a wild horse race, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, team roping, mutton busting and more. The wild horse race is the newest addition to this year’s rodeo. “We were looking for something exciting and new and different to do that would be attractive to people,” said Tamara Hayes, the general manager for the fair. Pat McLaughlin is one of the stock providers for the Southwest Washington Fair and helps to produce the event. He said it has been at least 30 years since anyone in western Washington has hosted a wild horse race. “It hasn’t been done in decades,” Hayes said. “It also stands out as a reason to come and see something different.” McLaughlin explained the wild horse race consists of six horses loaded in the bucking chutes at a time. Each horse has a halter and a rope attached. Six three-man teams stand in the arena
with a rope. “They will open all the chute gates at once, so all six horses come out into the arena,” McLaughlin said. “Each team will get the horse controlled and put a saddle on it. Then one of the team members will get on the horse and ride the horse to a designated line. The first person to cross the line is the winner.” McLaughlin said the sport mainly became less popular because of a lack of interest from contestants. “The Native Americans have kind of rejuvenated the sport and really pushed it,” McLaughlin said. “(They) made it a well-paying event and it is somewhat of a heritage thing for the Native Americans also.” There will be a total of 12 wild horses at the event. There are six different threeman teams that compete twice, with two different horses. “These fellows are very, very skilled at what they do,” McLaughlin said. “They travel all over the western United States. There will be teams here from New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.” The event is sanctioned through the National Indian Rodeo Association and all of the competitors are of Native American descent
“It’s crazy,” McLaughlin said. “These fellows are extremely skilled at what they do. One of the reasons the popularity has come back so well is the prize money being put up for these races. There are some races in the Northwest that there is $10,000 to win this event. That is one of the reasons it has become popular again with the Native Americans.” The fair puts $1,000 toward the wild horse race purse. The rest of the funds for winners come from entry fees. The other rodeo events — bull riding, bronc riding, bareback riding and barrel racing — also have a $100 entry fee. There is a 100 percent payback, so all
of the entry money goes to the winners. The entries close on Aug. 15 and the fee is cash only. “It is definitely, definitely something new around here and, as the sport is being rejuvenated, hopefully we will do more,” McLaughlin said. “It’s going to be something that the majority — if not all — of the people here have never actually witnessed.” The 2018 Rodeo & Wild Horse Race will take place on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at Southwest Washington Fair Grandstands. “I think it’s going to be a really great show,” Hayes said.

A Long History: Southwest Washington Fair Founded in 1909 Today’s fair had its formative start in 1877, when an association was formed in Lewis County for the purpose of promoting “the advancement of agriculture” and needing the stimulus of friendly competition to advance them beyond the first rudiments of agriculture, which are generally found in a new country. The organization was incorporated as The Lewis County Agricultural Association in November 1882, and its first fair was held Oct. 6-9, 1891, at what is the site
of today’s fair. Note: the fair held in 1877 was located at a site near where the former Fuller Market Basket was located in Chehalis. In the early 1900s, men such as E.C. Truesdell, an avid harness horse racing enthusiast, and George Walker, Chehalis, a breeder of racehorses, dreamed of a large new fair facility to serve the area. These men, and others who shared their dream, were close friends of the leading political figure of the day in the state, Gov. Roland Hartley, also a harness racing fan.
Those promoting the new fair facility made many trips to the state Legislature in Olympia to persuade that body to provide some funding. Their dream came true when in 1908 the Legislature agreed to provide the funding and stipulated the fair was to be located between Chehalis and Centralia. The Legislature decreed that the fair was to serve a six-county area consisting of Lewis, Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor, Cowlitz and Pacific counties.
The Southwest Washington Fair that was born was unique in that it was the only one created through an act of the Legislature to serve a six-county region. The fair’s rainy debut was held in September 1909. George Walker managed the fair from its inception as a regional event in 1909 until 1927. He is credited as being responsible for the fair’s early rapid growth and excellence.

Little Humans Can Win Big Prizes in Diaper Derby By Katie Hayes khayes@chronline.com
The annual KELA/KMNT Diaper Derby is possibly the most unpredictable contest at the Southwest Washington Fair. “It’s a good, family-friendly event,” said Larry Miner, who is the general manager at KELA/KMNT. “The moms and dads are pretty proud of their toddlers that are typically somewhere around a year old. They’re going to the fair for the day and they think this is kind of a cool thing to do.” For the past 25 years or so, KELA/ KMNT has hosted the event. Miner isn’t sure how many babies he expects this year, but said there are usually around 35. “I don’t have any control over the birth rate in Lewis County, but in the past there have been as many as 50 or 60,” Miner said. Babies must be 14 months or younger and are required to crawl the entire way on their hands and knees. Although the stakes are high in the Diaper Derby, results are usually left up to chance. Natalie Johnson / njohnson@chronline.com “I don’t think there is any kind of ABOVE: Jaxson Mollerstuen crawls to victory in his heat in the 2017 KELA/KMNT Diaper Derby at the South Stage at the Southwest Washington Fair. He also training for it,” said Pat Slusher, who does took first place overall. BELOW LEFT: Family members laugh as they try to coax babies to the finish line. BELOW RIGHT: Parents plead with their infants to take marketing for the fair. off from the starting line. Parents are allowed to coax their babies with toys, but must stay behind the finish line. “It’s just a lot of fun to see all the parents trying to coax their kids all the way across that stage,” Slusher said. “It’s a very popular event. It always has a full house for the audience and they get as many entries as they can possibly handle.” First, second and third place winners of the event receive prizes such as hotel stays or tickets to Mariners games. KELA/KMNT is still assembling prizes for this year’s competition, but every contestant receives a tote bag. “It’s fun,” Miner said. “You can’t help but smile when you’re watching it.” Slusher said not all parents are willing to leave their baby’s win up to chance. “(The best part is) watching parents trying to coax their kids and their kids ignore them,” Slusher said. “All kids are different. Some catch on right away and some don’t.” The Diaper Derby will take place on Thursday, Aug. 16 on Stage South. Parents can sign up their babies at 11 a.m. The races begin at noon.

‘For Those Who are About to Rock:’Hell’s Belles Headline Fair ENTERTAINMENT: Beach Boys Tribute Also featured By Will Rubin wrubin@chronline.com
Fans of timeless rock and roll music will get to see and hear a unique perspective on one of the best-selling bands in United States history at the Southwest Washington Fair. Hell’s Belles, an all-female AC/DC tribute band, is scheduled to take the Saloon Stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18. The Belles have covered the extensive works of the group responsible for charttoppers “Thunderstruck” and “For Those About to Rock” since 2000. Mandy Reed, who fills the role of longtime AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams, is the longest tenured member of the group and is looking forward to their first SWWF appearance. “We don’t really rock like females,” Reed said. “Generally, people seeing us for the first time are curious and sometimes they’re unsure, but generally the consensus afterwards is really good, because we take it seriously. They’re our heroes. We don’t take it lightly, and it shows.” The concert, like all 11 featured performances scheduled for the Aug. 14-19 event, is free to attend with the purchase of admission to the fair. Reed and the Belles have toured extensively around the United States — mostly the western portion of the country — as well as stints in Canada, Japan and Singapore. Adrian Conner plays as lead AC/ DC guitarist Angus Young, Amber Saxon handles the vocals originally sung by Bon Scott and Brian Johnson, and Judy Cocuzza channels Phil Rudd on drums.

“They draw huge crowds wherever they go,” said Pat Slusher, marketing coordinator for the fair. “People are excited about their appearance here.” The Belles work a fair number of AC/ DC hits into their ever-changing set list, but also try to play some of their lesser known tracks as a nod to the diehard fans in the audience. Reed said she enjoys sharing the band’s music with people of all ages. Often times, they’ll see grandparents and grandchildren in the crowd equally immersed in the show. “AC/DC music is timeless, so it has a wide, wide fanbase,” Reed said. “We actu-
ally prefer the all-ages shows because it’s fun up there with the kids rocking out. If we could do that all the time, we would.” Another marquee show on the fair docket are performances by Beach Boys tribute band High Tide at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Saloon Stage. Members of the iconic surf music group have complimented the band for their work and attention to detail. Slusher said they’re the group you hire if you can’t get the Beach Boys themselves. Patrons should note the main seating area at the Saloon Stage will be shaded by a large tent this year. A trio of country western artists —
Bucky Covington, Wilson-Fairchild and Jackie Lee — will be making their lone appearances on the West Coast this summer at the Southwest Washington Fair. Covington is scheduled to play the Saloon Stage at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16. He competed on the fifth season of American Idol on the Fox Network. His debut album in 2007 had the best first-week sales of any male country music artist in 15 years. Wil and Langdon Reid, sons of Harold Reid and Don Reid of the Statler Brothers group that sang backup for Johnny Cash in the 1960s, account for the Wilson-Fairchild roster. Jackie Lee is a 26-year-old crooner from Tennessee whose 2016 single “Getting Over You” has been played more than 20 million times on Spotify. “Everyone in Nashville said (Lee) is going to be big,” Slusher said. “It’s just a matter of time.” Other free entertainment options slated for daily performances at the fair include past favorites Reptile Isle and The Pirate Parrot’s Show. Reptile expert Donn Riggs was one of the most popular attractions at last year’s fair. He’ll be giving three presentations each day on the Midway Stage, this year with giant tortoises added to his array of animals. Chris Biro brings a flock of colorful birds and a life-size pirate ship with him to perform throughout the day. The birds fly around the audience during the show, which also features discussions about recycling and conservation. Junior Livestock Auction to Celebrate 50 Years at SW WA Fair By Will Rubin wrubin@chronline.com
This year’s Southwest Washington Fair will mark the 50th anniversary of the first Junior Livestock Auction featuring animals raised by young members of the 4-H Club and the Future Farmers of America. Based on pre-auction registration numbers, it could be the one of the largest yet. More than 220 exhibits — animals ranging from steers to hogs and rab-
bits — have been tagged for the auction, which is set to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Judging Pavilion. A few will almost certainly drop out after failing to make the designated weight range for specific animals, but there figures to be more entries this year than the 170 that earned a record $290,000 at the most recent fair. That figure includes add-on income such as donations, according to Junior Livestock Auction Treasurer Katie Gift.
Gift began selling pigs and steers in the auction nearly a decade ago. This is her second year working in an administrative role. “For a lot of the kids, this is how they earn money for school clothes or for their first car,” Gift said. “It’s a way for them to earn money doing something they love, which is work with animals. That was the case for me.” Four percent of an animal’s sale price goes towards administrative costs incurred by the auction and the
junior livestock committee. The rest winds up in a young person’s pocket. “When the animals get to the fair, they have to make a certain weight to be in the sale,” Gift said. “Each animal has a different weight range to hit. The kids declare their intent to sell in the spring and have to meet benchmarks on certain dates.” Interested buyers register to bid prior to the auction and make purchases by the pound. Animals are led by their soon-to-be former owners around a ring in front of bidders. Patrons often include area businesses as well as individuals, some of whom turn around and re-sell their purchases at the Chehalis Livestock Auctions. Because the auction is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, purchases and donations can be written off as tax deductions. “Most of the people watching either know someone who is showing animals or are there to bid,” Gift said. “Anyone can do it, though.” The livestock schedule at the fair begins on Aug. 14 with judging of 4-H and FFA sheep, dairy cattle and poultry scheduled to run through Aug. 16. Poultry judging continues through Aug. 19. Beef cattle and goat entries will compete for top billing that weekend as well. Championship awards will be doled out by fair judges as well as honorable mention designations. Awards for Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor will also be given out. See the exhibitors handbook on the fair website, www.southwestwashingtonfair. org, for complete details.

Little Miss Friendly organizers. They’re asked questions like their favorite part of the fair and favorite subject in school, and they’re judged on appearance, poise and friendliness. From there, the contestants, which usually number around 30, but have been as many as 80 in years past, will be narrowed to five. Those five finalists will have a jampacked schedule leading up to the fair, appearing at community events and parades, meeting civic leaders and elected officials. They’ll hand out stickers and bring a cute factor to the fair’s promotion. On the opening day of the fair, the winner will be announced and fitted with a cape. She’ll spend the next six days after being “caped” welcoming people to the fair, then spend the next year representing the fair at events throughout Lewis County.
