TIPS FOR COMBATING HIGHWAY HYPNOSIS Highway hypnosis most often occurs when someone has been driving a vehicle along a long stretch of roadway for an extended period of time. The monotony of a long drive can induce sleepiness or forgetfulness. It can lull the brain into a sort of trance, and the body is essentially operating on auto pilot while the mind is off somewhere else. Highway hypnosis is most common during the late-night hours when the time of day also plays a role in drowsiness.
5
• Take frequent rests on a long trip to stretch your legs. • Try not to drive during the hours that you are normally sleeping. • Bring a road trip partner along and make conversation. • Don’t eat a big meal before beginning a long car ride. • Open the windows and get circulation going. • Keep your eyes moving between your mirrors and the road to improve conscious thought. • If you are still unable to fend of feelings of drowsiness, pull over and take a long rest until you feel more capable to drive. They Say... 2017 The Reflector • 5 · RECONSIDER YOUR CHOICE OF FUEL Many of today’s auto manufacturers design their vehicles so they can run smoothly on regular unleaded gas, which is typically listed as “87 octane” at the pump. It’s unnecessary to choose premium gas but be sure to read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car. · BUY WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT Prices at filling stations fluctuate on a daily basis, so unless your car is running on empty, avoid filling up when the prices seem especially high. · BECOME A LESS AGGRESSIVE DRIVER When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. According to the California Energy Commission’s Consumer Energy Center, driving 55 miles per hour instead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.

ccording to Digitaltrends. com, which ranked the most expensive recently made road-legal cars in the world, the most expensive car in the world is the $4.8 million Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita. In ranking the cars, Digitaltrends.com ignored classic cars sold at auction and limited the list to one entrant per nameplate to prepre vent redundancies. The Swedish-made CCXR Trev Trevita was developed with a new exterior manufacturers refer to as the Koenigsegg Proprietary Diamond Weave. That process involves coating carbon fibers with a diamond-dust impregnated resin, mak making the car one that only extremely wealthy auto enthusiasts can afford to call their own. Only three of the vehicles were ever made, which should help lawmakers rest easy, as the 1,004 horsepower dual-supercharged V8 engine no doubt tempts drivers to push the pedal to the metal.

POP QUIZ
Set walking goals and schedules
True or false? Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in the United States.
ANSWER: False. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. About 600,000 Americans die from heart disease every year—that’s 1 of every 4 deaths.
Create a plan and stick to it. Set a schedule of 30 minutes a day to begin with, then move up from there. As soon as you are comfortable with your pace and technique, you can start measuring your walking distance using pedometers. You can purchase a pedometer at most sporting goods stores, or check your running distance through online pedometers before or after your workout.
Having high blood pressure, having high cholesterol, and smoking tobacco all increase your risk for heart disease. Health care professionals call these “risk factors.” How many American adults have at least 1 of these 3 risk factors for heart disease? 24% 37% 47% 76%
ANSWER: 47%
How many people are killed each year from tobacco related illnesses? A. One million
B. Two million
C. Four million
D. Six million
ANSWER: D. Tobacco kills up to half its users, annually killing six million people each
year. More than five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use, while more than 600,000 deaths can be attributed to non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke.

Preparing meals at home remains the least expensive way to eat. The budgeting resource Cheapism.com compared the costs of a classic chicken dinner - accounting for variables such as tip, food waste and family size - made at home and at a restaurant. The comparison determined that a home-cooked meal costs as much as 60 percent less than a dinner out. A simple chicken dinner for one costs between $6 and $8 at home, takeout costs more than $13 and dining out costs more than $15.

one are the days of huddling around a boom box, switching mix tapes or queuing up a multidisc player on the stereo. It’s now possible to make playlists that combine music from vari-
ous genres in a matter of seconds. Apps from services such as Amazon, Spotify, Pandora, and iTunes enable customers to select among pre-made music playlists or compile their own. As you prepare playlists for your next party, keep these tips in mind.
Select songs from an era during which the majority of your guests grew up. Go with popular tunes. Scour the Billboard® charts to find today’s most popular music. Slow it down for dinner. Song lists distributed by DJ Intelligence help shape song selections. For example, their Top 200 Most Requested may be fitting for many parties. That list includes favorites like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Cupid Shuffle” and “I Gotta Feeling” in their top five. Establish a playlist in advance of the party so you have time to mingle and enjoy yourself.

Involve guests in the process of planning your playlist. Spartify and Festify work with the Spotify app and allow guests to choose which songs to play next. Spartify will fill in the playlist gaps if guests are indecisive, while Festify works by creating a new party and an exclusive code. Guests then enter the code in their mobile browsers before voting to decide which tracks to play.

A study from the lu ury travel network irtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That is more than any other generation. Travel can be expensive so here are some tips to help cut costs.
Money-saving travel tips for retirees AGE-RELATED DISCOUNTS
Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings.
DON’T OVERLOOK TRAVEL AGENCIES
While many travelers’ first instincts are to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it’s important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or

partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors to their countries want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte.
TRAVEL AS PART OF A GROUP
Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it’s with a retirement community, religious organization or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters.

How you can preserve your Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have an impact with maintaining and improving brain health. Harvard Medical School states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults. A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function. In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies.
HIT THE GYM Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. SUPPLEMENT WITH DHA DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and mono-unsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Tips for a mosquito-free patio outside. Mosquitoes fly slowly and often cannot make it through the simulated wind. In addition, fans may blow away body odor that draws mosquitoes to humans in the first place. · Light citronella candles and/or tiki torches to give off smoke that confuses mosquitoes and
masks the human scents that attract the bugs. Place torches around your patio but find somewhere other than the dining table to place citronella candles if you decide to use them, as some people find the smell aggravating or bothersome. · Plant mosquito-repellent plants: catmint contains an
oil called nepeta faassenii that can be used as an allnatural mosquito repellent. Closely related to catmint, catnip also can be an effective mosquito deterrent. But both species can be invasive, so be sure to contact a local lawn and garden professional before planting anything to repel mosquitoes.

Pools and/or spas can affect the value of a home and also require various safety modifications. Taking a thoughtful approach when considering adding pools and/or spas to the home can help homeowners rest easy knowing they made the right decision.

· Do your research first. Read reviews on products and find out the base prices of certain pool models so you’ll have a system of comparison. Other factors, such as the material used in the pool (i.e., concrete, metal, fiberglass, or vinyl) and filtration methods, also can affect the price.

· The type of pool or spa you ultimately choose should depend on how you plan to use it. If you want a pool mainly for family entertainment, then you may want to add mood lighting or special landscaping features. If you simply want something in which you can cool off, a basic model may be most practical. If your spa is intended for therapeutic purposes, look for ones with multipositional water jets or other specialized features.

· Fall and winter are some of the best times to get deals on pool and spa equipment because it’s no longer prime swimming season; however, there are deals to be had come early spring as well. Retailers may deeply discount last year’s models to make room for new inventory.
Home Grown Bedding Plants Veggies, Baskets and Pots
· Some retailers sell pools and spas but do not arrange for installation. Realize that an inground pool will require excavation, and your yard may need to be regraded to allow for rain run-off. Electricians and landscapers are some additional costs to factor in.

· Learn about zoning laws and other ordinances. Rules regarding pool placement and size will vary depending on local laws. Always consult with the town’s municipal office and get the proper permits. Otherwise, you may face fines and be forced to spend more to fix problems that need to be addressed.

· Speak with the pool installer about any liability and compensation insurance they may carry to protect you in the event of an accident during the installation of the pool. Reputable builders should be fully insured.
Pools can be entertaining additions to a home. When considering the addition of a pool to their properties, homeowners should take their time and make sure it’s the right decision for them.

How to plant a tree for successful growth Sunlight and warm temperatures frequently inspire homeowners to spend more time in the great outdoors during spring and summer. Outdoor projects often top homeowners’ to-do lists in spring and summer, with gardens and landscapes taking center stage. Planting more trees around the yard is one popular project that can improve property value and benefit the environment.
did you know?
• Trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30%. • One tree can absorb as much carbon in a year as a car produces while driving 26,000 miles. • Each average-sized tree provides an estimated $7 savings in annual environmental benefits, including energy conservation and reduced pollution.
Why plant trees?
There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of o ygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

Getting started
Planting the tree
Now it is time to amend the soil. t’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. t’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. esist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.

Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increase the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. ook for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

One way to keep your lawn looking lush and green is to aerate the turf. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes which allows air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong.
