‘Tower Crawl’ Not the Night of Drinking and Debauchery It Once Was

Bar Owners Still Expect Big Crowds the Night Before Thanksgiving By Will Rubin

THE WEEKENDER

The “Tower Crawl” used to be an annual tradition unlike any other in downtown Centralia. Each year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, people returning to the area for the holiday, many of them college students or young adults, would hop between one of the many bars along Tower Avenue starting at the Tower Tavern and working

their way northward. A generation ago, it was impossible to drive down Tower Avenue due to the size of the crowds stumbling between the Olympic Club and the Gas Lantern. Even five and six years ago, the revelry was enough to motivate the Centralia Police Department to stage its riot gear and SWAT truck — just in case. Today, the Crawl still exists, though largely in the past tense. Hoards of old friends and former classmates still descend on downtown the night before Thanksgiving, but they’re more likely to stay in one spot and chat a while rather than break out a pair of beer goggles. “When I first bought the bar in 1997, I think there were 12 bars

up the strip around Tower,” Tower Tavern owner Dave Freeman said. “We were just talking about it as a staff and I asked if we’d staffed up for the Crawl, and of course we hadn’t, because it’s really dropped off over the years. We’ve got about four (bars) now and once you leave one, it’s hard to get back in, so people just tend to stay put.” That’s not to say the night resembles a normal Wednesday for the establishments still slinging booze on Tower Avenue. Police officers make regular passes through the bars to ensure things remain under control and enforcement officers from the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board show up as well. O’Blarney’s owner Jeff Malloy said that by the time his Centralia outpost experienced its first Tower Crawl night, it had already been

open for nearly a full year, so the staff knew how to handle busy nights. “That night on the calendar is in my opinion always a busy night in the bar business just for the fact everyone is coming home for the holiday,” Malloy said. “I hear stories from customers about what it used to be back in the day, and we have a great time and a lot of fun each year, but I don’t have anything to compare it to.” Freeman doesn’t expect the downturn to become cyclical and for the old fervor to return anytime soon. With more establishments opening in Chehalis, he figures more people who live there may forgo the traditional Tower Crawl stops altogether. That doesn’t mean there will suddenly be more open seats at the bar come the night of Nov. 21. “It’s still going to be a busy night,” Freeman said. “We don’t really have to promote it, because it promotes itself.”

Bartenders Put to Test in Weekender Competition Six Local Mixologists to Compete for $500 Friday, Nov. 16 BY THE WEEKENDER

Ten area bartenders will put their skills to the test in the first Fall Bartending Competition, sponsored by The Weekender and hosted by Coconuts Island Grill in Centralia. The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16. The top prize is $500. Spectators are encouraged to attend and cheer on the boozy action.

The contest features bartenders from the Lucky Eagle Casino, The Junction Bar and Grill, Ramblin’ Jack’s Rib-Eye, Bub’s Pub and Coconuts Island Grill. “It’s all by The Weekender,” said Chronicle and Weekender Media Specialist Manager Lindy Waring. “We just thought it would be a great way to promote The Weekender by getting together for a bartending competition.” Emceeing the event will be Todd Chaput and state Rep. Richard DeBolt. They, along with Waring, will be joined as judges by two member of the crowd who will be selected through a raffle. Aside from the honor of serving as judge for the contest, there will be raffles for prizes as well, with certificates from Lucky Eagle Casino and Shilo Inn up for grabs. As for the competition itself, it’s a headto-head tournament with multiple rounds. In round one, contestants will go head to head after pulling from a pool of drinks. Competitors will have three minutes to make the drink. The maker of the top drink, as chosen by the judges, will move on. Round two is the speed round. Competitors will have one minute to make four drinks in order — a Long Island Iced Tea, a Cuba Libre, a Kamikaze and a beer pour into a pint glass. The winners move on to the semifinals.

In the third round, competitors will again draw from a pool of drinks. They will then have three minutes to make that drink with the top scores moving to the final round. In the finals, the remaining bartenders will have three minutes to make their own “signature drink.” After that, they’ll be given three minutes to make a drink drawn from the pool of possibilities. Judges will be scoring bartenders throughout the competition on creativity and innovation, speed and efficiency, presentation and style, and flavor.

THE 7 BEST HANGOVER CURES — Backed by Science) While there’s no shortage of purported hangover cures, ranging from chugging a glass of pickle juice to rubbing a lemon in your armpit before drinking, few of them are backed by science. Here are seven easy, evidence-based ways to cure a hangover. 1. Limit Your Alcohol Intake Both hangover incidence and severity are determined by the amount of alcohol you consume. Drinking in moderation can help prevent hangover symptoms. 2. Avoid Drinks With Congeners Choosing drinks that are low in congeners, such as vodka, gin and rum, could decrease the severity and frequency of hangovers. Meanwhile, tequila, whiskey and cognac are all high in congeners, with bourbon whiskey containing the highest amount. 3. Eat a Good Breakfast Eating a good breakfast can help maintain your blood sugar levels, provide important vitamins and minerals and reduce the symptoms of a hangover.

can help with. Remember folks, marijuana is 114 times safer than alcohol, so next time you are gearing up for a party consider making the safer choice and avoiding the alcohol hangover altogether.

4. Get Plenty of Sleep Alcohol consumption may interfere with sleep. A lack of sleep could contribute to hangover symptoms such as fatigue, irritability and headaches.

5. Stay Hydrated Drinking alcohol can cause dehydration, which may make some hangover symptoms worse. Staying hydrated could reduce hangover symptoms like thirst, fatigue, headache and dizziness. 6. Have a Drink the Next Morning Drinking alcohol can prevent the conversion of methanol to formaldehyde, which could reduce some hangover symptoms. 7. Try Taking Some of These Supplements Some supplements, including red ginseng, prickly pear, ginger, borage oil and eleuthero, have been studied for their ability to decrease hangover symptoms.

The Bottom Line

While there are many well-known hangover cures out there, few are actually backed by science. However, there are several science-backed ways to avoid the unpleasant symptoms that follow a night of drinking. Strategies include staying hydrated, getting plenty of sleep, eating a good breakfast and taking certain supplements, all of which could reduce your hangover symptoms. Also, drinking in moderation and choosing drinks that are low in congeners can help you prevent a hangover in the first place. — Source: Healthline.com
