Pacific Sports Spa Weighed Me, Froze Me and I Still Didn’t Cry
Weekender Reporter Undergoes the Fitness Treatment at Thorebeckes’ Facility By Katie Hayes
KHAYES@CHRONLINE.COM
While Thorbeckes’ Pacific Sports Spa probably isn’t going to become my daily exercise routine in 2019, some of its equipment was a pretty kick-ass jump start to thinking about fitness in the new year. For reasons that probably aren’t worth exploring, 2018 became the year of “Couch Potato Katie.” Last year, I was rock climbing several times per week and doing yoga almost daily. When I moved
to Washington to work for The Chronicle, I opted for occasional hiking instead of exercising on the reg. Pacific Sports Spa in Chehalis is full of state-of-the-art equipment for unconventional methods of exercise and recovery. Both Cassidy Best, director of Pacific Sports Spa, and Brittany Voie, marketing director at Thorbeckes Athletic Club, conducted a tour of the spa. Cassidy picked three stops to give me an idea of what people could experience at Pacific Sports Spa.

ing, because I hadn’t weighed myself since I moved to Washington at the beginning of this year. The whole process took about eight minutes. For its three-month wellness challenges, Thorbeckes uses the Bod Pod as a before and after measurement of people’s success. “People get really hung up on weight as a measurement of fitness,” Brittany said. “With this, you can see exactly what is happening inside your body. With a scale, if you lose five
“This is the most accurate body-fat testing you can do,” Cassidy said. “… This is what the military uses, the NFL — this is the gold standard for body composition testing.” Essentially, the Bod Pod looks like a giant egg-shaped rocket ship. People sit inside and then it tells them their percentage of body fat, among other things. Cassidy took down my name, birthday, height and then she weighed me. I found this part particularly excit- SEE PAGE 5.....................................

With this, you know exactly what it was.” Cassidy explained that hearing what percentage body fat you begin with can be traumatic, but noted it’s only a starting point. “You have to be a good counselor when you do Bod Pods, because not everybody is teeny tiny, so they get their results and they’ll bawl,” Cassidy said. “... We do a wellness challenge, and we will have like 50 people sign up and 40 of the 50 will cry when they get their results.” Compared to other methods of testing how much muscle and fat you have, Bod Pod actually sounded the least upsetting, though. Cassidy named several alternatives that I “might have heard of.” (I hadn’t heard of any of them.) She talked about one where people — not at Pacific Sports Spa — pinch your skin to check how fat you are. That one would definitely make me cry. The Bod Pod room has a chart inside that shows how different percentages of fat look on people of varying heights and weights. The leanest a woman should ever be is 15 percent, while men shouldn’t dip below 5 percent. When it was time for me to get in the Bod Pod for my actual results (not the fun, photo-taking session), everyone left the room. I put on a swim cap, stripped down and sat in the egg rocket. My results were skewed because we messed with calibration while taking photos — I was told — but I came out with 35 percent body fat. Cassidy said I was probably more like 19 percent, but I didn’t cry, so I considered this a success.

I waited until the day of my assignment to Google “cryotank” and what I found was unsettling. Here’s what Wikipedia said: “Cryotank or cryogenic tank is a tank that is used to store frozen biological material. The term ‘cryotank’ refers to storage of super-cold fuels, such as liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. Cryotanks and cryogenics can be seen in many sci-fi movies, but they are still currently undeveloped.” The two shouldn’t be confused. I’m pretty sure Hans Solo went in a cryoFor pretty much the entire week, I tank — it was the cringe-worthy scene called “cryotherapy” the “cryotank.” when Princess Leia was like “I love

you!” and then he responded with “I know.” When I started looking at cryotherapy, it was still terrifying. I read an article in Men’s Health about how Hugh Jackman uses cryotherapy and that’s how he looks so young at 50. He even has a little Instagram video of him dancing around in the cryotherapy chamber. The chamber was a giant, silver tube with just enough room for someone to step inside and stand up straight. Only the person’s head is visible in the chamber. It was lined with blue fabric inside and had a giant red

button on the outside for emergency stops in case someone panicked. Just above where the person’s head is visible was a large screen that showed the temperature dropping. Essentially, cryotherapy gets your surface temperature super low and draws blood to your core. The temperature drops down to 260 degrees below zero and, in two minutes, it burns between 600 and 800 calories. People cannot wear clothes in the chamber. Cassidy went over the instructions several times — “Naked.

There is a good chance you have never done or even heard of the services that Pacific Sports Spa is able to provide, but that’s ok, according to the business’ website. Whether you are a hardcore athlete or a soccer-mom, they hope you will stop by and try it out. Their services of Whole Body Cryotherapy, Game Ready, Normatec Pulse Recovery, Hydroworx Underwater Treadmill, Body Composition Testing and Concussion Testing are all at the top of their respective games, and are now available in Chehalis. Many of these specialized services are being used by some of the most famous and successful athletes and celebrities in the world.

If we are in here and somebody panics and they need to get out, we toss them a robe. It’s more of a safety measure than anything.” We watched a video tutorial, but I talked throughout almost the entire video. The woman in the video said men keep their underwear on. I told Cassidy I thought this was sexist and asked her if it was based on biology. “Their private parts are more sensitive,” she said. “... It’s a different configuration down there.” Once I was in the chamber, I wasn’t quite so nervous. I swore a lot. I said some questionable things, but it honestly wasn’t as uncomfortable as I expected. I focused on my breathing, kept shaking out my arms and legs, talked a ton, and then it was over. I expected to feel something more specific in the chamber, like the blood rushing to my heart, but it was honestly just really, really cold. After the two minutes was up, though, and when everyone left the room — because Cassidy, Brittany, The Chronicle’s photographer and possibly one other person all wanted to see cryotherapy in action — I felt giddy and rejuvenated. I jumped a few times when I was changing, just to get some of the energy out and felt like I wanted to go for a run.

This didn’t apply to me, but between the 35 percent body fat shock and pseudo hypothermia, I felt entitled to the weird robot massage. NormaTec looks like two giant sleeves that can either go on your legs or arms. There’s another one for your hips that looks like a giant black diaper. It’s a heftier compression that While I wanted to get on a tread- feels like a massage. To top it off, the mill, there was still more Pacific Sports sports spa has a line of incredibly

comfortable recliners. The recliners offer massages too, but that seemed like a bit much. Brittany sat next to me while I enjoyed the NormaTec and told me a bunch of stories that involved things going wrong for people who tried the equipment. One person tied their NormaTec diaper too tight and it popped open when it inflated to massage their hips. “The biggest thing we talk about is athletes after a hard workout or a practice,” Brittany said. “Your legs are
sore, your legs are really tired. So you do these compression therapy sleeves to squeeze the lactic acid out of the muscles that builds up after a workout. That’s what makes you sore, the idea being that you’re helping get fresh blood into your legs quicker.” Now that 2018 is almost over, it’s time to make New Year’s resolutions I have no intention of keeping. If anything is going to give me a kick in the butt, I’d put my money on an egg rocket telling me I’m more than a third body fat.

Dr. Floyd Is Here for Your Health Top 10 Tips to Improve Your Lifestyle One of The Weekender’s favorite docs is Centralia’s own Floyd D. Smith, M.D. For this issue focused on getting in shape as we head into the new year, we asked the good doctor his top tips. Here they are, in his own words.
1. Exercise on a Regular Basis
Getting moving for 15 to 20 minutes, two to three times a week, is sufficient. Walking is perfectly adequate. Yoga (minute for minute) has been shown to have the same cardiovascular benefit as aerobic exercise. Exercise with a friend. It will be less boring, and you are more likely to continue it.
2. Eat Healthy
Moderation and balance is the key, mix proteins, fats, and to a lesser extent, carbs. Try to eat your carbs in the morning and focus on protein and fats at night. Add more plants to your diet. Restrict animal fats and use more plant oils as your source of fats. Alcohol in moderation may lead to lower cardiovascular risk. More is not better! Always leave the table just a little bit hungry. You don’t need to belong to the clean plate club.
3. Lose Weight
Many studies show multiple cardiovascular benefits with weight loss. You will have a reduced risk of heart attack and stroke. Recent studies also show an association of cancer risk with being overweight. Hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and joint replacement risk are all improved with weight reduction. Losing as little as 8 pounds can reduce your risk of needing a total knee replacement by as much as 10 percent. Losing over 12 pounds may eliminate your need for statins to control cholesterol.
4. Quit Using Tobacco Products (or Vaping) in All Forms
Everyone has heard tobacco’s negative associations with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), lung cancer and oral cancer, but most people don’t realize there is an association with bladder cancer as well. Stroke and heart attacks also are more frequent with tobacco use. It is never too late to stop. One year after you stop using tobacco products, your risk of smoking-related lung cancer is similar to a nonsmoker. Your cardiovascular risk for heart attack and stroke is reduced by 50 percent after that first year.
5. Tightly Control Your LDL Cholesterol
Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels should be less than 72 mg/dL. Getting a level down to 72 or lower basically stops arteriosclerosis cold. This reduces your heart attack and stroke risk. Recent studies show that levels of 40-50 mg/dL are desirable for people who have known cardiac disease. You cannot do this with diet and weight loss alone. You will need your doctor’s help to achieve these goals.
6. Be Social
Multiple studies show that socialization leads to less disease and less visits to the doctor (except for certain diseases such as Chickenpox, TB and Leprosy). Cardiovascular risks and suicide risks are improved.
7. Have More Sex
Studies show that a better lifestyle and increased longevity are associated with a healthy sex life. If you need medical help, see your doctor. There are a multitude of products available which will help you achieve your goal. Generic drugs are now available so you don’t have to visit the bank first before you pick up your prescription. Women now have a medication available for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD).

I recommend it for everybody,” Bainbridge said. Upon entering Embody, you’re greeted with a quiet hello and a warm smile. The space places a priority on quietness. The first room is the Embody Lifestyle Boutique, offering hot tea and healthy cold beverages such as flavored Kombucha and Kefir water on tap, and a variety of supplies such as yoga mats, jewelry, organic body care and essential oils, natural cosmetics, books, music, and other items which assist in overall health and wellness. The studio, owned by Christina Wolf, officially offers classes and instruction in yoga, Nia, tribal belly dance and meditation, along with massage therapy. Each week about 40 classes are taught, mostly in yoga and Nia.
Juanita Bainbridge walked out of the yoga studio at Embody Movement Studio last Friday looking refreshed and glowing, despite spending an hour with the morning yoga class. The class aims to energize a mixed level class of beginners and advanced beginners, helping them gain flexibility, strength and deep relaxation. To The Weekender, Bainbridge is beyond an advanced beginner, as she has been with the studio for about a year and a half. Before she started with Embody, located in downtown Centralia on Tower Avenue, Bainbridge described her body condition as “stiff.” She suffered from a history of major injuries. Bainbridge searched for a place to do yoga, and landed on Embody with a two-week trial. “I realized how much there is to moving your body,” she said. “The classes here really get your body stretching. I can do things I couldn’t SEE PAGE 9.....................................

Traditional yoga is one of the main offerings at Embody.
FROM PAGE 8. . ........................... In reality it offers so much more than an hour of class, as evidenced in the transformation of student Bainbridge. The Weekender sat down for an interview with Wolf last Friday. She was sipping hot hibiscus, licorice root and peppermint tea. “It’s much more beyond than a workout place,” Wolf said. Wolf opened the studio in 2013 after a nine-month renovation in the historic building, bringing back the original brick covered in sheeting and the floor with its glued-on carpet. Today the floor is a relaxing, shiny, smooth wood-plank jewel. The main studio has a high ceiling and more of the wood floor and brick walls. With the lights turned down low, it gives a peaceful vibe, a soothing glow. Wolf grew up in the Twin Cities. Her mom was the director of the Chehalis Ballet Center, now known as the Southwest Washington Dance Center. Wolf danced at the center, and started teaching classes at 14 years old. After high school she did stints as a flight attendant where she was first exposed to yoga in Hawaii. She changed professions and earned a business degree from the University
of Washington, believing she would eventually go into the family business at the Chehalis Industrial Park. She stayed in Seattle and worked for a digital advertising and marketing firm (her advertising, marketing and Photos Courtesy of Embody website for Embody are top-notch, a Embody’s Nia classes feature movement. reflection of her time in Seattle), making good money. But money was not the end-all. She made her way back to the Twin Cities after reconnecting with her high school sweetheart. Over the years, from dancing as a teen to working in Seattle, she became attracted to yoga and Nia. For those unfamiliar with Nia, according to Embody’s website, “Nia is a blend of healing arts, dance arts and martial arts.” For Wolf, yoga offered a different path toward wellness from ballet. “It is such a different approach to the body and to working with the Dr. Matthew O’Brien specializes in Musculoskeletal Radiology. body. … I had grown up with perforBorn and raised in Detroit, Michigan Dr. O’Brien is a former mance based and perfecting to form musician who is married with one daughter. and when I found yoga and later Nia, they are very personal and the practice was for me and not to perform for somebody else,” Wolf said.
