How Do the Patriots and Rams Stack Up? It’s the Youngsters (Goff and McVay) Vs. Oldsters (Belichick and Brady) in Super Bowl 53

By Phillip Heilman

THE FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, JACKSONVILLE

After conference title games that were equal parts thrilling, agonizing and head-scratching, the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots should provide a compelling Super Bowl on Feb. 3 in Atlanta. New England quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick return to the biggest stage for the third

straight year and ninth time overall. Coincidentally, their first Super Bowl together came as plucky underdogs in February 2002 — an astounding 17 years ago — and resulted in a victory over the favored Rams, who were then located in St. Louis. These Rams have a new home but can produce a similar level of excitement as their “Greatest Show on Turf” ancestors. Sean McVay is the most-talked-about-person in coaching and has gotten the best

out of third-year quarterback Jared Goff, who led the NFL’s No. 2 scoring offense (32.9 points per game) during the regular season. As football fans catch their breath before Sunday’s showdown, here is a look at how the Rams (15-3) and Patriots (13-5) match up at key spots.

COACH

Patriots: Belichick

Analysis: Now in his 19th season in New England and 24th overall as an NFL head coach, Belichick has put together an unmatched career. His five Super Bowl titles as a head coach are the most all time, one more than Chuck Noll. Belichick, 66, employed a masterful game plan to slow down Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the first half last week, and he’ll no doubt challenge Goff

off and made several big throws in the second half and overtime. The Rams’ offense generally has three receivers, a tight end and a running back on the field, allowing Goff to be in complete control. Edge: Patriots by a wide margin.

Rams: McVay

Analysis: McVay, who turned 33 on Thursday, is the youngest coach to lead his team to the Super Bowl, surpassing Mike Tomlin, who was 36 when Pittsburgh won it in 2009. The running joke in league circles is anyone who has ever had a conversation with McVay was interviewed for a coaching position earlier this month because of his offensive prowess. The Rams had the 32nd scoring offense in 2016 and have had the league’s No. 1 and No. 2 scoring offenses in his two seasons. Edge: Patriots by a thin margin.

QUARTERBACK Patriots: Brady

Analysis: Similar to Belichick, Brady’s five Super Bowl titles are the most ever by a starting quarterback, one more than Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw. At 41, Brady is more than eight years older than McVay, but it doesn’t show. He had 29 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions during the regular season and completed 65.8 percent of his attempts. After throwing a fourthquarter interception against the Chiefs, Brady was nearly flawless while leading two touchdown drives and then a third in overtime. His precision and understanding of the game remain incredible to watch.

Rams: Goff

Patriots: Sony Michel

Analysis: The Patriots opened their two playoff games with drives of 14 plays (Los Angeles Chargers, touchdown) and 15 plays (Chiefs, touchdown), largely relying on their running game. Michel, one of their two 2018 first-round picks, ran for 931 yards and six touchdowns in 13 regular-season games and has 242 rushing yards and five touchdowns in two playoff games. Michel is complemented by James White (87 catches during the regular season) and Rex Burkhead. White caught 14 passes in a Super Bowl win over Atlanta in 2017 and may be used similarly to combat the Rams’ powerful defensive front.

Brett Carlsen

New England Patriot tight end Rob Gronkowski could be the key to the game.

Edelman has become the most important member of New England’s passing game. Edelman missed last year’s Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia because of a preseason ACL injury but returned in 2018 to lead the team with 850 receiving yards despite a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-

enhancing substances. Edelman had seven catches (on 10 targets) for 96 yards against the Chiefs, including two third-down conversions in overtime.

Rams: WR Robert Woods SEE PAGE 6.....................................

Rams: Todd Gurley

Analysis: After scoring 21 total touchdowns and averaging 130.8 yards of offense per game during the regular season, Gurley has had a strange postseason. McVay declared his star player healthy after the Saints game despite Gurley getting four carries for 10 yards and a touchdowns and catching one pass for 3 yards. Because of that, it’s fair to wonder if a knee injury that bothered Gurley earlier in the season is lingering. Signed off the scrap in December, C.J. Anderson has 39 carries for 167 yards and two rushing touchdowns in two playoff games. Edge: Rams ... if Gurley is healthy and in the right frame of mind.

PASS-CATCHER

Patriots: WR Julian Edelman

Analysis: For years, the Patriots’ top pass-catching option has been tight end Rob Gronkowski. Now that Gronk seems to be on his last legs,

CH593579tb.cg

Analysis: The No. 1 pick in 2016 was superb in 2018, throwing 32 touchdowns against 12 interceptions and completing 64.9 percent of his attempts. Once concern: Goff fumbled 12 times during the regular season and lost five of them, which is worth remembering in a game that is expected to be close. Goff looked rattled during the first quarter last week at New Orleans but shook it

FROM PAGE 5. . ............................................ Analysis: Now in his sixth season, Woods had his first 1,000-yard season (1,219 on 86 catches) in 2018 with six receiving scores. A reliable target for Goff, Woods often works over the middle and will likely draw coverage from Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Another interesting subplot: Rams receiver Brandin Cooks (1,204 yards and five touchdowns on 80 catches) was traded from the Patriots to the Rams last April along with a fourth-round pick for a 2018 first-round pick and sixth-round pick. Cooks struggles against physical cornerbacks but remains a downfield threat. Edge: Rams by a thin margin.

Analysis: Two talented players with personalities to match, Talib and Peters are both finishing Year 1 with the Rams. Talib was acquired from Denver and Peters from Kansas City in a busy offseason for Los Angeles. Talib has 35 interceptions during the regular season since entering the league in 2008. Peters has 22 since 2015 and won’t be afraid to jump routes when the Patriots have possession. Nickell Robey-Coleman will likely cover Edelman out of the slot. Edge: Rams by a thin margin.

X-FACTOR

Patriots: Gronkowski

Analysis: Although he is in only his ninth season, Gronkowski has a lot of miles on him and is no longer the dominant force he once was for Patriots: DE Trey Flowers the Patriots. However, Brady went to him down Analysis: A grinder who succeeds in part because the left sideline for a 25-yard completion on of his high-powered motor, Flowers has posted 7 third-and-5 late in the fourth quarter against 1/2, 6 1/2 and 7 sacks the past three seasons after the Chiefs, setting up a go-ahead touchdown. playing one game as a rookie in 2015. Flowers had Brady found him again for 15 yards on thirda key 14-yard sack of Mahomes in the second and-10 in overtime, leading to the game-winning quarter, which pushed the Chiefs out of field goal score. Don’t expect Gronkowski to match his range and helped the Patriots take a 14-0 lead Super Bowl production against the Eagles (nine into halftime. Set to be an unrestricted free agent, catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns), Flowers could make himself more money with a but his number will be called in an important strong performance against the Rams. moment.

PASS-RUSHER

Rams: DT Aaron Donald

Analysis: Simply put, Donald is the NFL’s best player. In 2018, he led the league in sacks (20 1/2 for 183 1/2 lost yards), tackles for loss (25) and quarterback hits (41). He beats double teams like they are nothing and makes a $135 million contract seem like a bargain. Having Ndamukong Suh playing alongside him is an embarrassment of riches. Edge: Rams by a wide, wide margin.

Rams: OLB Dante Fowler

Analysis: Acquired from the Jaguars via trade in October, Fowler came through with the biggest play of his career during overtime against the Saints. The former No. 3 overall pick hit quarterback Drew Brees as he was throwing, leading to an interception by safety John Johnson. Fowler has a strong track record against Brady. He sacked him twice in last year’s AFC title game and had a crucial sack/strip in Week 2 to help preserve the Jaguars’ 31-20 victory.

CORNERBACK DUO

Edge: Patriots because Gronk’s ceiling remains higher.

Analysis: After a rocky first season in New England, Gilmore settled in and was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2018. He mainly covered Kansas City’s Sammy Watkins as New England used Jackson and a safety to double Tyreek Hill. The Patriots could employ a similar strategy against the speedy Cooks, but he isn’t quite the same big-play threat as Hill. While Gilmore was one of the Patriots’ rare big-money expenditures in free agency, Jackson is an undrafted rookie.

Gronk the Key to Super Bowl Outcome

Patriots: Gilmore/J.C. Jackson

Rams: Aqib Talib/Marcus Peters

Gronkowski was knocked out of last year’s AFC title game in the second quarter when a blow from strong safety Barry Church gave him a concussion. He finished with one catch for 21 yards. In Week 2 of 2018, a healthy Gronkowski managed just two catches for 15 yards. If the Rams can match that, they’ll have a good chance of winning the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl of commercials, the time advertisers show off their creativity before the big game Feb. 3 between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, has begun. They are attempting to get the attention of the more than 100 million viewers expected to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday. As all the sparkling new ads dribble out before they premiere nationally on Super Bowl Sunday, let’s look at some of my favorite ads currently running and those I can’t stand to look at. Thanks to the DVR, I generally try to avoid as many ads as I can. But I do enjoy some ads. I already have my favorite for best Super Bowl ad campaign. I became an instant fan of the Verizon advertisement that played during the American Football Conference title game between the Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs in a campaign that celebrates first responders. The ad for the campaign, titled “The Team That Wouldn’t Be Here,” really is a brief preview of 12 very short pieces filmed by director Peter Berg about NFL players and a coach who have been saved by first responders. The brief commercial advises viewers to go to the website AllOurThanks.com to see the films, which range from a few minutes to five minutes. I was intrigued enough to immediately go to the website. One of the strongest pieces features AJ McCarron, who was briefly a Buffalo Bills quarterback. He was about 4 years old when a jet ski accident led to a gruesome injury that almost cost him

his life. He explains that the left side of his face has eight metal plates and six screws. I dare anyone to watch McCarron and his mother talk about the accident and the heroic work of the first responders without being moved to tears. An abbreviated version of the ad ran during a recent emotional episode of NBC’s “This Is Us.” A second member of “The Team That Wouldn’t Be Here” is Anthony Lynn, the former Bills coach who now is the coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. First responders also saved his life after a hit-and-run accident caused him to

3 Chicken Wing Recipes Your Super Bowl Guests Will Love Tribune News Service Whether you’re hosting a Super Bowl gathering or asked to bring a dish to pass, we’ve got your recipe game plan. If you want to score big with your Super Bowl party fans, think about handheld snacks like chicken wings and cheesy dips. The National Chicken Council estimates 1.38 billion — yes, you read it right: billion — chicken wings will be consumed this Super Bowl weekend. Most of the wings (about 75 percent) will be eaten at, the council says, bars, restaurants and other food venues. The remaining will come from grocery stores. Most bars fry wings, but they can also be baked. You can also batter or bread them or leave “naked,” as some menus list them. And then there are boneless wings — usually made from chicken breast or the chicken tender. If you like your wings hot, give them a good toss in your favorite hot red

pepper sauce. For a milder version, mix that red pepper sauce with some honey or maple syrup, butter and fresh minced garlic. Frying gives the wings the best crisp and crunchy coating. But you can come close to that crispness by baking the wings. Here are a few chicken wing tips from the Free Press Test Kitchen.

Frying

Buying

Baking

Whole wings have a flat part, a drumette and a wing tip. Buy whole wings if you’re planning to grill or if you want to have large, uniform pieces. Split them at the joint and cut off the wing tip. Freeze the tips to use in making stock for soup. Four-pound bags of frozen wing portions (the drumette and the flat part) are sold at most grocery stores. There are about 30 wing portions in the bag. Buy chicken tenders if you want to make boneless wings. You can buy these in the frozen section of most stores.

Best New Event Center

Have ready a deep fryer or large pot with at least 4 inches of oil — canola is a good bet. Heat it to 375 degrees. Having a thermometer is a good idea. Dust the wings with flour or seasoned flour (or a breading), shaking off the excess before frying.

Deep Fried Buffalo-style Chicken Wings Makes: 20 wings / Preparation time: 15 minutes / Total time: 1 hour See cook’s note for baking the wings. This recipe can be doubled. Canola oil for frying 2 pounds (about 20) chicken wing portions (drumettes and flat portion) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon favorite all-purpose seasoning blend 1/2 cup favorite red hot pepper sauce or more to taste 2 tablespoons melted butter 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup Celery, carrot sticks and blue cheese or ranch dressing, optional (for serving)

Line a sided baking sheet with foil and coat the foil with nonstick cooking spray for easy cleanup. Pat the wings dry. The drier the wings are, the better the skin will crisp. Season them as desired. Once baked, brush them with a sauce Heat oil in a deep-fryer or deep pot to 375 and then bake about 5 minutes degrees. Pat the wings dry with paper towels more to set the sauce. Serve with and set them aside. In a bowl, mix together the flour, chili powder, black pepper and more sauce on the side.

Here are a few recipes to try for the Super Bowl;

seasoning blend. Working in batches, dredge the wings in the flour mixture and shake off the excess.

While the wings are cooking, in a large bowl whisk together the hot pepper sauce, melted butter, garlic and honey. Add the fried wings to the sauce and toss to coat evenly. Let them sit in the sauce for about 5 minutes before serving. Serve with additional hot red pepper sauce if desired. Cook’s note: To bake the wings, pat them dry and skip the seasoned flour. Season them as desired with an all-purpose seasoning blend or a Buffalo wing-style seasoning blend. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Boneless Buffalo Wings With Spicy Cheese Dip This recipe shaves off fat and calories from traditional deep-fried chicken wings. For the blue cheese dip, you can use all reduced-fat sour cream instead of the sour cream mixed with yogurt. If you desire more spiciness, serve extra hot pepper sauce on the side. Consider this your healthy version of chicken wings.

Spicy Blue Cheese Dip 1⁄3 cup reduced-fat sour cream 1⁄3 cup nonfat plain Greek-style yogurt 2⁄3 cup crumbled blue cheese 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper To prepare dip: In a small serving bowl, mix together all the ingredients, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

For Wings 3 tablespoons low-fat or nonfat buttermilk (see note) 3 tablespoons of your favorite hot pepper sauce, divided 3 tablespoons white vinegar, divided 2 pounds chicken tenders 6 tablespoons white whole-wheat flour, such as King Arthur 6 tablespoons cornmeal ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 to 3 tablespoons of canola oil, divided 2 cups carrot sticks 2 cups celery sticks To prepare wings: In a large bowl, whisk the buttermilk, 2 tablespoons hot sauce and 2 tablespoons vinegar. Add chicken tenders and toss to coat. Refrigerate and marinate

at least 10 minutes or up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, whisk flour and cornmeal in a shallow dish. In a separate small bowl, whisk the remaining 1 tablespoon of hot sauce and 1 tablespoon of vinegar; set aside. Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting the excess drip off, and roll each piece in the flour mixture until evenly coated. (Discard remaining marinade and flour mixture.) Sprinkle both sides of the chicken with the cayenne. Working in batches, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add about half the chicken. Cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side. Transfer to a serving platter. Repeat with the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and chicken, reducing the heat if necessary to prevent burning. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil if needed. Transfer to the platter. Drizzle the chicken with the reserved hot sauce mixture. Serve with carrots, celery and Spicy Blue Cheese Dip. Notes: If you have no buttermilk, you can use buttermilk powder prepared according to package directions. Or make sour milk by mixing 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of nonfat milk. Look for 3-pound bags of chicken tenders in the frozen aisle or fresh in the meat case. Sweet and Spicy Maple Glazed Wings Marinade and Basting Sauce

1/2 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons favorite chili powder or Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle seasoning 1 teaspoon dried mustard 1 clove garlic, peeled, minced Place the wings (20 chicken wings portions — about 2 pounds) in a large bowl or plastic sealable bag. In a measuring cup, combine all the marinade and basting sauce ingredients. Pour half the marinade over the wings and marinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours. To bake the wings, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a sided baking sheet with foil and place a rack on the baking sheet. Arrange the marinated wings on the rack. Bake, turning halfway through baking and basting with the remaining sauce, about 50 minutes to 1 hour or until the chicken wings are cooked through. If desired, heat the broiler and place the wings under the broiler for several minutes to crisp the skin further. Slider Recipes for Your Super Bowl Sunday Smorgasbord Lobster Sliders

Tribune News Service For many of us, the Super Bowl is just one more reason to eat something we normally wouldn’t. So on Sunday, when the New England Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta, your attention should be turned to a super smorgasbord. We love the ease and noncommitment of a slider. The small size of the sandwiches (often burgers) means you can make and sample a couple different kinds. They’re also less messy, and less likely to make you feel gorged. We’re suggesting three recipes total to add to your spread — one for each team and one classic, allAmerican, beer-and-cheese-filled option. Feel free to make all three, and serve on a large table with sides of chips, celery sticks with blue cheese dressing, and a cooler of beer. Oh, and wings.

This one is for the Patriots. A mini spin on the classic New England lobster roll, these sammies are served on 2-inch round soft dinner rolls. Start with the meat from a 1 ½-pound cooked lobster, about 1 cup, and add to a bowl along with 2 tablespoons each mayonnaise and sour cream, 1 tablespoon each minced shallot and finely diced dill pickle, 2 tablespoons finely diced celery, 1 ½ teaspoons minced tarragon and ½ teaspoon finely grated lemon zest. Stir to combine, then season with salt and pepper. (Use white pepper if you have it.) Butter your 8 rolls, then toast them in a skillet butter side down until golden. Scoop a couple of tablespoons of lobster mixture onto each roll and don’t be afraid to eat more than one.

Ingredients: When cooked, remove to a plate 1/2 cup bread crumbs (soft white) and shred the chicken with a fork or 2 tablespoons milk your fingers. Cook marjoram, and ketchup; mix well

with a spoon and let this mixture stand for 5 minutes. Add the ground beef, crumbling it with your fingers as you add it; mix gently but thoroughly with your hands until combined. Form the meat mixture into about 10 to 12 mini burgers. At this point, you can cover the burgers and chill them for up to 24 hours. When you are ready to eat, prepare and preheat a gas or charcoal grill. Grill the burgers on a small rack placed over the regular grill rack, over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side, turning once, until the burgers are 160 F. Top each mini burger with the American cheese slices and cover the grill for 30 to 40 seconds to let the cheese melt. You can also fry these burgers in a hot pan over medium-high heat, turning once, until done to 160 F. Assemble the burgers with the buns, tomatoes, lettuce leaves, ketchup, mustard, and pickles. Be sure that the little burgers are cooked to a final internal temperature of 160 F as measured with a reliable meat thermometer for food safety reasons. To take the most accurate temperature of the burgers, pick one up with some tongs and insert the thermometer into the side of the burger. Because these burgers contain a panade (a mixture of breadcrumbs and milk), they will be tender and juicy even when cooked well done.

‘I’m Coming Home.’ Georgia Native Gladys Knight Will Sing National Anthem at Super Bowl; Maroon 5 Featured at Halftime By Lisa Gutierrez

TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE

She has sung the national anthem many times in an Emmy-winning career that spans more than six decades. But this time is different, says the “Empress of Soul,” Glady Knight. This time, the Georgia-born singer will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” in front of a worldwide audience of millions before the start of the Super Bowl in her home state. “When Atlanta hosts Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3, it will have a hometown star taking center stage prior to the biggest game of the NFL season.” CBS Sports announced. Knight joins a controversial Super Bowl music lineup. Other African-American performers have refused the game’s prestigious halftime gig to oppose the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick, according to reporting by Billboard, Us Weekly and other sources. “JAY-Z and Rihanna reportedly said no to performing this year in protest,” Billboard reported. The former San Francisco quarterback began a movement in 2016 by silently taking a knee during the

anthem at games to protest how black people and people of color are treated in the United States. “Late last year, news emerged that Rihanna turned down the chance to play at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show because she didn’t agree with the NFL’s stance on the kneeling controversy,” writes Esquire. “Cardi B — a vocal supporter of Kaepernick — also turned down the chance to play the halftime show. “Having really run out of options, the NFL decided to go with the safest, most boring choice, hiring Maroon 5 to play the Super Bowl halftime show.” According to People and other entertainment outlets, rapper Travis Scott came under fire for deciding to perform with Maroon 5 and agreed to do it only if the NFL “join him in a joint donation to a charitable cause,” the magazine reported. “In partnership with the league, Scott will make a $500,000 contribution to Dream Corps, a non-profit organization that champions social justice.” Variety reached out to Knight’s reps to ask about the controversies but did not receive an immediate response. Knight lives on a farm in North Carolina, according to a report last year by the Las Vegas ReviewJournal. But her ties to Georgia run deep. She was born in Atlanta on May 28, 1944, according to the Today In Georgia History website. The 1973 hit “Midnight Train to

Georgia” carried Gladys Knight and the Pips — the Pips were her brothers and cousins — to worldwide fame. According to a tally by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she has released 11 studio albums and “has recorded two No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles, 11 No. 1 R&B singles and six No. 1 R&B albums.” In 1996, Gladys Knight and the Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2015, Knight “was honored with the renaming of Atlanta’s State Route 9 from Peachtree Street to 14th Street as Gladys Knight Highway,” according to CBS Sports. “And here we are. we still here. And I’m in Georgia, singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl,” Knight says in an NFL video announcing her Super Bowl performance. In the video she talks about when the group performed in segregated America.

“If we played a concert that did two shows, we did one for the Caucasian people upstairs and one for the African-American people, people of color, in the basement,” she says in the video. “And we used to ask questions about that stuff. Why we gotta do that? “And so we started doing our own thing about how to make it better. We marched with Dr. King. We supported him and his growth. And to look at my audience now? Oh. My. God. It’s diverse.” She said she hopes the anthem, as she plans to perform it, “will touch people in a different way. “We’ve been singin’ it forever. But this time, I would hope that they would feel it so deeply that it would lift them to a higher place. That’s what I feel when I sing the song. This is who we are, this is how we are. And this is what we do. Get ready, Atlanta. I’m coming home.”
