The Evergreen Playhouse in Centralia presents “Blithe Spirit,” a smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages. This muchrevived classic from the playwright of Private Lives offers up fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, remarried but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira who is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” one Madame Arcati. As the (worldly and un-) personalities clash, Charles’ current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed, “passes over,” joins Elvira, and the two “blithe spirits” haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity. Performances are Fridays through Sundays, with a paywhat-you-can show on Thursday, Feb.

Sweetheart Dinner Train: For Valentine’s Day this year, the ChehalisCentralia Railroad invites friends and families to enjoy a unique experience on the vintage 1916 steam locomotive, pulling a 1920s dining car through the Chehalis River Valley. Because of its popularity, two additional dates are being added to the schedule this year. Each train accommodates 60 people and only one excursion is planned each evening. The train departs the station at 4:30 and returns at 6:30 p.m. A
four-course dinner is served with your choice of prime rib, salmon or chicken cordon bleu and either champagne or sparkling cider. The cost of the dinner and excursion is $65. Reservations must be made by the Sunday (5 days) prior to the departure date. The last chance for reservations will be Feb. 12. Seating choices and tickets must be reserved online at steamtrainride. com/valentine-sweetheart-train-2018/.
Seats are sold in pairs at tables of four, and you may be seated with another couple. The train departs from the railroad depot located in Chehalis at 1101 SW Sylvenus St., across from the Veterans Memorial Museum. Just like the Catalina Wine mixer, well kinda — it’s the I-5 Toyota Wine Mixer from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Join in for an evening of fun where this year’s raffle vehicle will be unveiled, and buy a ticket for your chance to win. The money raised from each raffle ticket sold is retained by the local school or organization that sells the ticket. The Paradise Fire-Aid Super Jam NW will take over the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds from noon to 10 p.m., featuring non-stop music by 15 bands. Cost is $10 per person. Food vendors will be present. Participants are encouraged to bring folding chairs. Some of the top award-winning talents such as Randy Oxford and the Linda Myers Band will share the two-stage event with local bands including Backfire Band, Rock City, Sweet Bay Blues, Bruce Maier Band, Christine Ritchey Band, Johnny Ray ( tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan ) and solo artists such as Brian Mittge. Musicians from as far away as Palm Springs and Sacramento, California, Vancouver B.C. and throughout Washington state will be volunteering for this spectacular event. Sound and lights on the two stages will be provided by Jeff Anderson of Pleasant Hill Studios in Chehalis and Cary Wakeley of WAVS Studio,
Centralia. From 9-10 p.m. there will be the unprecedented “Super Jam Grand Finale “ where up to 100 musicians of all styles will jam together. All proceeds for this event will be donated directly to the North Valley Community Foundation in Chico, California where they have operated for over 30 years as a nonprofit. DINNER AND DANCING
Go traditional! Make a reservation at the most romantic restaurant around and enjoy fancy food, champagne and ordering
appetizers and desserts. If there’s room in the dining area, dance. Not enough room at the restaurant? Go to a club or find a dance class and learn square dancing. It’s still romantic when it’s peppered with the occasional “yeehaw!”

More and more massage therapists are making house calls, so it’s possible you and your spouse can relax without having to leave the house. But if you want a more complete getaway, find a local spa and a book a couples massage. If you can take the whole day, get a mani-pedi together before or after the massage. If you want the relaxation to last year round, contact your local therapist, recreation center or massage school and take a massage class.

You may both have to work on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15, but even if you can’t skip town for the day, book a room at a fancy hotel or a cute little inn or bed-and-breakfast for you and your partner. Eat room service on the balcony and just relax and enjoy each other’s company or explore a quaint downtown or city nightlife.

Tips for a Great Valentine’s Day For a holiday intended to celebrate love, Valentine’s Day has a complicated legacy; according to Psychology Today, couples are more likely to break up in the weeks surrounding the day. Why? Experts say unrealized or unreasonable expectations or comparisons to past celebrations can make what on any other day would be just fine a disappointment. Another reason, psychologists say, is because Valentine’s Day tends to add even more pressure on couples who are already struggling. They want to make it a perfect night to prove to themselves they’re not having problems, or they find their negative feelings intensified by the day’s events.
