president’s letter

Hello everyone! Another month has gone by! It’s crazy to think how fast this term is going. We’re already getting ready for elections, so be prepared to vote in the first and second week of February. Remember that in order to vote, you must also be a paid dues member, so make sure you get on that as soon as possible! It’s the season of giving, so I hope that even though we don’t have events for the last two weeks of December, you’ll still do your best to spread kindness and love. I’ll hope to see you at our ice skating social as well on January 6th! Have a wonderful holiday, stay safe, and keep serving! I’ll see you in the new year! With all my heart, Katlyn Wong

Hello! This month’s events were exciting, such as Fall Rally South and Relay for Life Kickoff. In preparation for the new year, Relay for Life Kickoff was a great start to bring recognition and encourage members to sign up for Relay. Thank you for continuously signing up and attending our events. Some reminders: if you would like to go to Dance Marathon, it is now $15. I encourage you all to go because it is one of my favorite events of the year and even if you don’t dance, there are other activities you can do; standing for 8 hours may sound painful, but I assure you it will be worth your time and effort. Again, thank you for another wonderful month. I hope to see you all at our social!

Best wishes, Lyann Gao

Relay for Life Kickoff was a very fun and emotional event for all who attended. For a while, attendees were able to go around the Spring Valley HS cafeteria and buy food (and boba milk tea from Clark), with all the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Later in the night, we were able to play games like musical chairs and Simon says, which helped us get to know people from other schools and make new friends. The highlight of the event, however, was the part when people got the opportunity to talk about why they Relay. Many people shared their heartfelt stories of how they or their loved ones were affected by cancer, and it showed how much cancer impacts the world. Overall, this event was one I was glad to attend! Relay for Life was something I was interested in since I heard about it through the agenda. I loved all the support I saw within the community, especially key club members who supported the fight against cancer. The kickoff was so fun by spending time with my members and speaking why I fight against cancer and why did I join this event.

Fall Rally is basically the RTC spirit rallies put on steroids, all on the hundreds of acres of amusement park known as Six Flags Magic Mountain. I'm not going to dive too deep into the little details since this is a short article, not a blog, but FRS can be summed up with one word: incredible. Early morning walk-on rides on coasters such as Goliath and Twisted Colossus were such a treat, there was a decent all-you-can-eat buffet with amusement park staples, and both ride operators and park patrons seemed to be in that unique Key Club spirit (both genuinely and jokingly). Although our division didn't win the session spirit stick, it was still amazing cheering on and rewarding ourselves for raising so much money for the PTP program. If you feel good "ALL OF THE TIME" and can afford it, I highly, highly, highly recommend going to Fall Rally South. It's a one-of-a-kind experience that cannot be fully explained with words.

Fall Rally South was a really fun event where members from all over the CNH District of Key Club were able to come together and fundraise for PTP, an amazing organization that helps to provide materials and education in order to fight against Pediatric Trauma, the leading killer of children today. It was very fun to ride rollercoasters, meet Key Clubbers from outside Las Vegas, and represent Division 28 South during the spirit rally! I hope that next year, even more Key Clubbers will be able to participate in such a fun event and help out a great cause!

ROCK-N-MARATHON

11.12.17 Rock n' Roll Marathon was just the best thing I ever did as someone who had joined Key Club in their first year. It was so awesome to help out runners by giving them water, and it was especially funny whenever they would joke around with us and run till the end. The support they had said while running and saying thank you warmed my heart so much.

The annual Clark High School wrestling tournament was a great way to volunteer and help out our Charger community. Despite it being Thanksgiving weekend, Clark Key Club had a good amount of volunteers present and we were able to help out in many ways from selling snacks to scoring matches to cleaning up the school. I was very proud of how hard everyone worked, and seeing everyone come out during their week off to help others was very heartwarming!

KATRINA OREVILLO | Vice President The Wrestling Tournament was very nice to help out because of Mr. Weller taking time out of his day to help chaperone for our RTC event, and giving him back a favor, is the whole moral and helping hand of Key Club. It was very nice to make new friends while working and meeting new people!

It was my very first experience at this year’s wrestling match, although, I was quite nervous since it was my first time there, I had lots of fun. To be honest I was actually quite nervous since it was my very first time and I definitely didn’t want to mess up on the job. Due to how I had heard how previous students who had kept score were scolded by the wrestlers’ parents, I was intimidated it, since I had received the job of keeping score . However, the referees were extremely cautious about the score, and took good care of the volunteers and I. Not only that but the referees were also very encouraging and even gave me some compliments since it was my very first time being the score keeper. One of the referees said I did a good job for a first timer! It was rather scary at times to watch the boys wrestle since they were very fierce and I even witnessed a few of them get injured. But, it was quite interesting and fun, watching them do their best and giving it their all out there to compete for their school. Overall, I had an enjoyable time out there, keeping score of the matches became a fun job for me and I made friends with the people at my station as well. I can’t wait for the wrestling tournament next year!

Ah, the November wrestling tournament, the event that confirmed to me how uncomfortable actual wrestling is compared to "professional" wrestling. Each volunteer (some of which neglected to show up) was assigned one of three tasks: keeping track of score, operating the scoreboard, and yelling out time when the time comes; select volunteers were also operating the concessions stand. Of course, being an expert at yelling stuff, I opted for the latter when it came time to swap the AM and PM shifts. We had to pay close attention to the matches: even the tiniest error can be disastrous. I watched the matches for around two hours and I still have no idea how wrestling works. The matches all went by super quick, ending the Friday event a few hours early and having the entire Saturday afternoon shift be canceled. Come for hours, stay for the addictive $2 tacos with unlimited toppings.
