2020 SPRING SUPPLEMENT
focused ON THE FUTURE
Brought to you by the Oracle and Periscope publication staffs
COMING
Together Together Every spring, the Oracle yearbook staff creates a spring supplement for the yearbook--a chance to capture the memories of the school year that happen after our main publication, the yearbook, goes to press in March. Every spring, the Periscope news staff creates a senior magazine--a chance to honor our seniors and celebrate their accomplishments before they leave in May. But this spring, chaos ensued and we all went home in March--and stayed there. Yet in the midst of this chaos, both staffs came together to create this publication, a way to preserve the experiences of our unusual end of the school year while also making sure to show our seniors the love they deserve. Please enjoy our senior spring supplement magazine, 0Focused on the Future.1

Covid-19 SIGNS OF THE TIMES
Carlisle
The Coronavirus outbreak created a need for social distancing, and with social distancing came new challenges for young people. The stay-at-home order issued by Governor Tom Wolf resulted in a shift to online coursework, a change that was stressful to many students. Many were responsible for creating their own work schedule for the very first time, and are struggling to adjust to the change. 0Having to do online school is the biggest change,1 Alana McWilliams, a CHS senior, said. 0I have to now stick to a schedule to be able to get my work done. Also not being able to see my friends in person has been hard.1 The pandemic has also impacted students2 plans for the future, bringing anxiety to many who fear their goals may be put on hold. Mia McCoy, a CHS senior set to attend George Mason University in the fall, is one of many who is nervous to see what is coming. 0A lot of things are uncertain now,1 said McCoy. 0I had a lot of plans for the future and I am not sure how they2ll pan out in the long run. The lack of schedule has drastically affected my health, both physical and mental.1 Students like McCoy and McWilliams have turned to online communications, namely social media, in order to keep friendships- as well as their hopes for life post-Coronavirus, alive. 0[I] have been active with my friends through FaceTime and stayed connected through social media,1 said McWilliams. 0Social media usage has really been increasing since there2s not much else for me to do in quarantine,1 McCoy agreed. 0Local businesses and organizations, and just peers in general, are frequently online, so it2s been fairly easy to get news despite not being face to face.1
Community
Essentials Essentials
Many Carlisle High School students work essential jobs in the community, as cashiers, restaurant workers, emergency service workers, and other jobs. These students have had to adjust to new working conditions, limited communication with their customers and coworkers, and managing the stress that comes with working outside the home during a pandemic.

SIGNS OF SUPPORT FOR SENIORS In honor of the senior class and to show support, the class of 2020 received personalized signs for their lawns, homes and businesses. Jessalyn Morrow poses with her sign. Signs of support can be seen throughout town.
SHARED SISTER SPACE Stephanie Martin and Rachel Martin work at their designated shared work space. 0I think the part of [working from home] where I can work at my own pace is good, but some teachers are putting more work on us,1 Stephanie Martin said. 0Also not being able to see other students is really hard.1
TEACHERS AND TECH Mr. Fox shows off his new 0classroom.1 Fox teaches communication and broadcasting, and features three online classroom essentials: a computer, headphones, and coffee. Teachers had to quickly turn around online teaching material for the remainder of the school year, something that many had never done before.
#HERDFROMHOME2020 Olivia Lane sits next to her inspirational desk sign as she begins her schoolwork for the day. 0Working from home was definitely a change.,1 Lane said. 0I had more control over my schedule but that also meant having more responsibility to get my work done on time. It was nice having this experience before going to college.1
0HOME1 WORK Jarrett Wilson settles in to complete his online assignments. During the time away from school, Wilson was able to balance his school expectations while also working for his family2s landscaping business.
DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING Katherine Whitfield finishes an exercise during her online CPYB class. Although the dancers have to stay at home, CPYB continues to train them everyday through remote Zoom classes.
MASKS FOR EVERYONE Stephanie Martin2s dog, Spike wears a protective mask. 0My mom and dad thought it would be funny to keep the dogs safe from Corona.,1 said Martin. Although Spike tried to take it off and

my other dog, Buddy just kept licking it.1
FANCY FAMILY DINNER Lorraine Durbin and her family shake things up for their typical dinner meal. Durbin said creating a theme for dinner gives us something to look forward to.1

6 FEET APART: Madison Jameson and Eli Plant stand the suggested 6 feet apart while still being able to connect and have fun. SETTING THE SCENE Xenia Makosky takes her reading assignment outside for a change of scenery. 0While it2s been hard adjusting to a new normal, I2ve enjoyed being able to spend the past few weeks reading and working in the garden,1 said Makosky. 0I2ve discovered new books that have become personal favorites, and I2ve noticed things that I would usually never have time to stop and admire, such as new birds and flowers.1
Quotes from Quarantine Quarantine 0Being
out of school has affected my life in a lot of ways as a senior especially. Knowing that we won2t get to have a graduation ceremony is a really hard thing to cope with. Staying in touch with everyone in my life has been difficult, but the Facetime calls I2ve been able to have with all of them have been super uplifting and encouraging for the future.1 - Kate Manti
0I had to change my daily routine completely; my sleep schedule is very thrown off considering I go to bed at 1 or 2 in the morning, and my motivation to do work has decreased. For fun I like to cook and bake, play with my dog, watch movies, workout, read, and go on the occasional walk. I either go out and talk to my friends or play video games with them or just text them.1 - JJ Centobene
0Closing school has affected me pretty badly because I am a senior and I miss doing some senior activities and just having fun at school so without it there is an absence and it feels weird. For fun I just hang out with my family and FaceTime my friends a lot. I try to workout at home, and I just try to keep myself busy with stuff whether it is trying something I2ve never done before or if it is something to prepare me for the future. 1 -Marty Brown 0Being out of school has definitely impacted my daily routine. I2ve fallen into the same daily routine where I 0My work ethic kind of went down but I think wake up, shower, eat, do my I2ve kind of got the hang of the new schedule. schoolwork and then go to I2m more motivated to finish my schoolwork sleep. For fun, I talk to my because I work at my own pace now without friends and family and watch worry. For fun, I go on hikes. For my friends, I Netflix. I keep in contact with Facetime a lot of them and we work on my friends through social homework with each other over the phone.1 media and FaceTime.1 - Michael Julias - Elle Lehman

All dressed up with nowhere to go
A treasured rite of passage for high school junior and seniors, the 2020 prom was unfortunately one of the first events that had to be canceled due to the Coronavirus. Yet CHS students would not be deterred from taking this opportunity to get dressed up and celebrate. The senior class council organized a prom court, voting through Schoology. Local community organizations even worked together to hold a Prom on Wheels that gave students the chance to dance and cheer outside of their houses. While it might not have been the night planned, the spirit of prom lived on. POISED AND PRETTY

The Lost Season
Spring Sport Athlete Throwbacks With the cancellation of school, this also called for the spring sports season to be canceled, leaving many senior to not get to have their senior season. For many senior athletes, this was their last year in that sport, so we are taking a trip back to the past to see where it all began for many of them.

As we all found ourselves with a lot of downtime on our hands, many CHS students took time to express their artistic sides, taking advantages of many different mediums such as food and painting to dance and horticulture. These artistic endeavors were both creative and good for the soul.

Zsilas Michael Hughes Saying goodbye has always been a direct opposition of what I believe in. I am a firm believer in the optimistic 0See you later.1 To my Periscope friends that quickly became family, thank you for showing me that our relationships can truly be built from nothing. I walked into M34 a stranger and walked out with friends that have not only celebrated my greatest triumphs, but comforted me in my hardest falls. Thank you to Muir for your overflowing generosity, compassion, and relentless encouragement. Thank you to everyone involved in Periscope, for you all taught me something. Through laughter, food, stress, food, tears, and more food, my time in M34 will always be a fond memory. See ya later (hopefully on your tv screens).
Working on the yearbook staff was one of the most insightful experiences I2ve had at CHS. To come together and create a piece of history was really special. Good luck everyone! Kensington MacMillen
So long, CHS! Periscope and Oracle
I didn2t know what to expect starting high school as anyone would. All four years rush by really fast, and the time spent between friendships, teachers, & classes I wouldn2t trade it for the world. Life after high school can be scary. There may be times you2re required to step out your comfort zone. And during these times, life may upsetting, but I hope in the future, people will thrive & work together to accomplish great things. Thank you Carlisle High School for the memories! 1Sometimes you have to run before you can can walk1 -Ironman
Sierra Jones Samantha Martin As one of the first freshmen to ever serve on Periscope2s staff, I was incredibly nervous: I wanted to set a strong precedent for freshman staffers to come, and make a good first impression for myself, as I knew I wanted to be on staff until graduation. Looking back as a senior, and as Editor-in-Chief, I wish I could have told my younger self about the incredible family she was joining, and about the learning experiences she would have. I2m not sure she would have believed me, but I think she would have been even more excited to join than she already was. Thank you, Mrs. Muir and the rest of my Periscope family, for making this such an incredible experience for me. I will miss you all, but am beyond grateful for these past four years.
Abigail Lindsay When I signed up to take Periscope, I saw it as just another elective class, but three years later, it has helped guide me to wanting to pursue journalism after high school. I will forever cherish every laugh, cry, and late night spent in M34. Thank you Muir for giving me a home in M34 for the past 3 years, and thank you Ms. Bantz for all you have taught me this past year. To future staff members, embrace every second of every moment; before you know it, you will be writing your own staff goodbye.
At the beginning of high school, I would have never seen myself joining the yearbook staff, and this year I picked it because I needed to fill a class. Now looking I back, I wish I would have joined sooner because it was one of the best decisions I made.
Casey Padgett Clay Warren
My years at Carlisle High School, I made so many memories that I will remember forever. The relationships I2ve made over the years are so strong, and I hope to keep for a long time.
seniors say goodbye Layton Shank
The last four years I2ve spent at Carlisle High School will always be some of the best years of my life, and ones I will always cherish. The time I spent this year making the yearbook will always hold a special place in my heart, and only add on to the great memories and times I will reminisce on for years.
