E S S F O N O N I C S CLASS OF 2020 REVEALS THEIR BEST KEPT HIGH SCHOOL SECRETS One time on my way to class at South, I got high. I just wanted to get a buzz but I got way to high on accident and was so confused during class.

I got into the orchestra photo last year but I am not in orchestra. They even put my name in the yearbook.

I was hitting a dab pen and set the fire alarm off.

I cheated on a test and was confronted about it but when I said that I didn’t the teacher believed me.

I never fully read a book for English class.

My sophomore year everyone thought the seniors were pulling pranks by doing stink bombs. It was me the whole time...It is what it is.

I aplogize to the custodians for having to deal with the copious amounts of used pregnancy tests I’ve thrown away in school trashcans...

One time I bought and took a Plan B after literally just dry humping.

t e mos For th ink I was th part, I er to my s lo c y my wa rs than e h c a e t peers.

GUILTY PLEASURE Watching the Great British Bake Off and eating Frito’s honey bbq twists.

FUTURE PLANS I plan to attend Columbia College Chicago to major in graphic design and minor in design management.

INVOLVEMENT I’m the Pylon Editor-in-Chief, a thespian Executive Board Member, NHS Vice President, Student Council President, a Healthy Lifestyles panelist, and a Kansas Honor Scholar.

MADELINE

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER My most impactful teacher is Mr. Garber. He has afforded me so many life-changing opportunities and has shown me how to be a brave, thoughtful leader. I am lucky to have spent the last four years in his class and cannot thank him enough for all he has taught me.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST I will miss standing in the student section at football games and hanging backstage with my friends during shows.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY I messed up the words to the Pledge of Allegiance while saying it over the intercom in the morning. It became a reoccurring nightmare for a couple weeks after that.

GUILTY PLEASURE Eating a full pack of Oreos past midnight XD.

FUTURE PLANS Counting racks with my honey.

INVOLVEMENT Football, track, Relay for Life, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the CASTLE project, martial arts, part time party clown, and an intern at Salina Regional Heath Center.

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER I am torn between Mrs. Abker and both of the Cullins’. Mrs. Abker, since the first day I met her, has poured her heart and soul into me. She has always told me that she believes I will do something great and no matter what troubles I come across I will overcome them. The Cullins’ would put their students lives before themselves any day. I always hear, throughout the halls of central, how amazing they are. And all the rumors are true. The Cullins’ are wonderful teachers, teachers that students will remember for the rest of their lives.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST The Friday night lights.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY When I was looking out the window, Tedlock was behind me looking out the same window close to my face. I turned back around towards him and our lips smacked. That was my first kiss.

I plan to attend Emporia State University to major in Oncology Nursing.

INVOLVEMENT I am involved in National Honor Society, Relay for Life, the women’s basketball team, link leaders, and a medical internship.

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER Mrs. Abker and Mrs. Corcoran are both two teachers who have impacted me. These two teachers have not only made me grow as a student, but as a person. They have always had such a comfortable atmosphere in their classrooms and I know I could go to them for anything.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST I will miss seeing all the underclassmen, people that I created friendships with, and all of the teachers.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY My most embarrassing memory was junior year when I was walking down the main stairs during passing period and I turned around real fast because someone said my name and my shorts caught to the railing of the stairs and ripped in front of everyone.

GUILTY PLEASURE Going with my mom to the store and adding a lot of food.

FAVORITE FOOD Homemade mac and cheese with some pulled pork.

PET PEEVE

People who think they know what they’re talking about all the time.

FUTURE PLANS

Attending Kansas State University to study Landscape Architecture.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST

What I’ll miss most is being with the boys all the time.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY

INVOLVEMENT During all of my four years at Central, I have competed in cross country, basketball, track, and math relays. I am also on the yearbook staff, an event lead for the youth Relay for Life event, and was a member of NHS.

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER I’d have to say my most impactful teacher was Mrs. Abker. While I have had many math and science teachers that I have loved, Mrs. Abker was really the first English teacher to make me love coming to class and talking about literature and appreciate what it has to offer.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY The only thing I can really think of was when I broke my nose at a substate basketball game. Thankfully it wasn’t home, but there were still plenty of people there to see my huge “squidward” nose.

GUILTY PLEASURE Watching way too much Youtube.

PET PEEVE When people scrape their teeth on their fork when they are eating.

FUTURE PLANS I am going to attend Kansas Sate Polytechnic to major in UAS Intergration and Design Engineering.

INVOLVEMENT I have been involved in footballl, National Honor Society, mathletes, theatre and penpals.

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER

I don’t think I could ever decide between Mrs. Cullins and Mr. Hair. They both have done so much for me and have continued to challenge and encourage me.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST The thing I will miss the most about high school is every day after school in the fall going out to the football field with the boys and putting in work to compete on Fridays.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY Falling off my longboard and a lady finding me knocked out thinking I was dead in the street. Two fire trucks and some police officers came.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST I will miss all the girls I was able to meet on the basketball teamsteam.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY When it was my first time playing varsity basketball, I stole the ball and went for a layup... I air balled it.

GUILTY PLEASURE Redneck caviar (Pringles and Easy Cheese).

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER

My most impactful teacher is Mrs. Abker. I had the pleasure of being her student for two years, where I learned not only how to become a much better writer, but many life lessons. I now see life in a “bigger picture” sense, which has allowed me to slow down and not be so caught up in life all the time.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST Playing with drumline under the stands after home football games.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY

I am currently Color Guard Captain, Key Club Secretary, Saxophone Section Leader, and Jazz Saxophone Section Leader. I’m also in Book Club, National Honor Society, a Kansas Honor Scholar, and a CAPS Volunteer.

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER My most impactful teacher is Mrs. Maresch because of all the help she gave me on my scholarship and college applications. WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST I’ll miss football games and late night practices with my color guard family.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY I got into a car accident in the school parking lot on my seventeenth birthday. I was sobbing.

INVOLVEMENT I am the Student Council Vice President, I’ve been a member of Mustang Media for two years, this year as the sports anchor. I am a Thespian and was in choir. I am a Link Leader, an NHS member, an AP Scholar, and a Kansas Honor Scholar. I am a student member on the City of Salina’s Accessibility Advisory Board and a student leader at First Covenant Church.

MOST IMPACTFUL TEACHER I appreciate and love so many teachers at Central, but Mrs. Abker holds a special place in my heart. She really challenged me as a sophomore to become a better writer, and helped me come back after surgery. I was her aide for the past two years and it was a blast. We share an interest in dogs and K-State. sports.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST

I will definitely miss seeing the boys in AP Lit and joking around with Mr. Lee in the hallway. I am certainly going to miss Miss. Donella and her awesome brownies, too.

MOST EMBARRASSING MEMORY Most people won’t know this, but in summer school I drove my power chair down the stairs outside the library (on the cafeteria side). It didn’t fly too far.

Be it acting or singing, being eye catching on stage is a skill that is hard to come by. Projecting yourself in front of a large audience is something that only a few can pull off and really earn a standing ovation at the end of the night. Pursuing a full-time career relating to the arts is something a few of Central’s seniors will be doing after they graduate. Senior Nathan Weis will be attending Fort Hays State University in the fall with a major in music performance and a minor in composition. Weis hopes to one day become a songwriter in the music industry and even sign with a record label. “My dream is to be performing on stage in front of massive crowds, but also have a big impact on others with what I create,” Weis said. Weis’s love for music started when he began choir in 8th grade. This passion later flourished when he came “I came to the music was my first started dograde. Acting, another facet of entertainment, is something senior Moses Brown will be pursuing after he graduates. Brown will be moving to Colorado to pursue his dream of acting and singing. Brown will be taking the first semester off and has hopes of doing online classes to give him time to build his acting resumes with different theatres around the area. Along the way, Brown has also applied for multiple talent and modeling agencies there. “Anything performing has been in my plans since before middle school. I have had great training and help. The modeling thing came about because when I was younger, people always asked my mom to put me in but we just never did,” Brown said. “So as I’ve gotten older, a lot more people have told me to try it out and go for it. I don’t want to be known for one thing-- I want to be versatile and with that comes staying current and fresh. In this industry, it’s very important too.” Senior Isaac Morris is also pursuing a line of entertainment in hopes of becoming a news anchor. Morris will be attending Emporia State University with a major in theatre and communications.

SENIORS SENIORS FINAL FINAL GOODBYES GOODBYES Cade Lopez

It stinks that I didn't get to finish off my senior track season and win everything for my team. All I really have to say is use every minute of every practice and performance like it'll be your last, because you really don't know when it will be your last and you will tend to perform way better. High school is just another step to get to that next level, don't let things get to your head and always take advantage of opportunities and great coaches. Thank you JD Garber and my track team, my football team, and FCA for great years.

Katie Buchanan Goodbye Art Department. You all mean so much to me. We have created friendships that I hope will last even after we are dispersed into the world. The diversity of personalities, styles, and stories is something I hope to see in the real world. Don't let anyone stop you from creating something special. "Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere." - Anton Ego, Ratatouille. Goodbye cello section! (and the whole orchestra) I will miss playing with all of you. Being in an orchestra family for eight years is hard to leave and strange to think that my time with all of you has come to an end. Hey! On the bright side, you guys don't have to play the same song over and over for thirty minutes.

To all my FFA family it was great to be with every single one of you. I enjoyed the memories we made and the amazing car rides together. I will miss each and everyone of you guys. I won't forget you and continue to make a difference.

Savannah Campbell

I want to say my final goodbye to my JAG family. Although I made most of my memories at Salina West, becoming JAG Vice President for Central junior and senior year was one of the most honorable roles I could have shook hands for. Being a part of JAG means being a part of your future TODAY! Thank you Mr. Dominguez for believing in all my potential and creating such a fun and SAFE environment! Good luck forever!

Luke Stanford President of National Honor Society - I am sad for us as a class that we did not get to finish through on the things we have been looking forward to for years. I am disappointed that I did not get to celebrate the NHS class of 2020 and inaugurate the class of 2021. However, I know that the members of NHS (and the class of 2020 as a whole) will go on to do amazing things in this world and accomplish more than any one of us can imagine. As for the class of 2021, congratulations to everyone who got in. You truly deserve it. Thank you for everyone who gave me this opportunity, it was truly amazing. || photos courtesy of students

Staff

May 17, 2020 || Pylon

Madeline Paradis When Garber woke me up from a nap during his graphic design class and asked me if I wanted to be a part of the Pylon staff, I never could have imagined where it would lead me. Journalism gave me the opportunity to teach a workshop at journalism nationals, led me to a career in graphic design, helped me win a state title with my staff, and allowed me to meet all of the talented people on our staff. To Garber: thank you for

putting a smile on my face every time I walked into your classroom. You make each student feel special and heard; you’ve comforted me at my lowest, and cheered me on at my highest. I will never ever forget the kindness you’ve shown me. And I promise that if I ever win anything, you’ll be the first person I thank in my acceptance speech. You have truly changed my life. To John: lol I’m just kidding. Ifykyk. To the j-room: thank you for being my

home away from home for the last four years and for protecting our snacks from the freshmen. And finally, to my staff: thank you for spending long nights up at school trying to finish each issue. You have all worked incredibly hard and deserve all the recognition in the world. I cannot wait to see what you produce in the years to come and look forward to watching each of you grow and change. Keep being rockstars… and nerds. :))

Marlie Coleman I couldn’t imagine spending my high school career anywhere else in this crazy world. I have an abundance of memories here, both good and bad, but both are what I needed to learn. I want to thank all of my amazing teachers, Like Mrs. Jett, Mr. Garber, Mr. Cullins, and so many more. Thank

you Jason and Connor for making me smile all of the time, and playing all kinds of video games with me. Thank you Zoe and Amaya for keeping me strong and teaching me that it’s okay to be myself. All of you guys have kept me going in my darkest times. I don’t know if I would be here without you. I hope

through out college and beyond that we can still be just as close as we are now. I know I don’t say it often, but I love each and every one of you like family. I’m just gonna conclude this with a big fat congratulations to the class of 2020 before I get so worked up I can’t see what I’m typing anymore.

Alex Morales Although I wasn’t a part of the Pylon staff until the end of the year, I still felt like a part of the team as they encouraged me to keep capturing moments. Having the support of my

friends and teachers really inspired me to do better even when I lacked the confidence in my work. My highschool goal was to leave a mark and a legacy behind. The photos I’ve

captured will be proof of that. Goodbye ~Big Daddy~ camera, may the next photographer treat you well. Checkout my photography page.

Concha Campa I first heard about the Pylon my freshman year. My sister at that time was a senior. I asked her how I could be a part of it and she told me that I couldn’t, because they already had a staff. I regret not going into Garbers room my freshman year and talking to him. When I started out on staff my junior year I was

very quiet and kept to myself, that quickly changed. The j-room makes everyone’s shyness go away. We are always cracking jokes and we are always having a great time. I’m going to miss everyone on staff and the great memories we’ve made together like the state fair competitions and nationals where

Jesus Jasso I’ve always felt like I’ve been wandering from here to there, with no place I fit in. But this year I joined the Pylon staff and I felt that I finally had somewhere I belonged. Even though this is my last year with them, I felt like I made some amazing friends here. I really have to thank

Concha, Rashada, Sydney, and the others for making me feel like I’m welcomed and wanted on the staff. The encouragement from everyone, the vibrant energy everyone brought, and the diversity made this like a second family. We’ve had our ups and downs, our laughs and fights,

I learned a lot about our staff. I’m especially going to miss Rashada asking for help every 15 minutes. I know next year’s staff will achieve great things. I hope you can bring home a Pacemaker next year. Don’t worry room 2102 I’ll be back next year. I’m not leaving until I get my hand painted on the back wall.

but that’s usually normal for a family. Getting to know everyone has been an amazing experience and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’ll miss everyone on staff but I know each one of them will do great things and I know I can always count on them.

Zoe Gilpin When I joined the Pylon staff, I was expecting to just be a writer. It was my first time in a journalism class, after all. However, through some...Intervention, I ended up a Copy Editor (Thanks, Mrs. Abker). I never expected to play the role I did, or have near

as much fun as I did, but it was truly amazing working for you all. You may not have seen my name on many stories, but I had a hand in almost every page we sent to print, and I’m so grateful to have had this opportunity. I felt so at home with this staff, and

no matter how many times I had to yell at everyone, I hope everyone knows just how much I’ll miss each and every one of them. I’ll miss Central dearly, and I can’t wait to watch the Pylon continue to flourish in years to come!
