Message from the President
Chulalongkorn University is delighted to present a concert by the Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Laung Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of its founding.
The Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra has been active in the classical music scene in Thailand, presenting concerts on various occasions since 1990. All the musical pieces performed at these concerts have been carefully selected for their contents as well as their aesthetic properties. This has enabled the Orchestra’s members to learn a great deal from studying, practicing and performing these selected works and, more importantly, the audiences have found them thoroughly enjoyable.
On behalf of Chulalongkorn University, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the instructors, students and everyone involved in the efforts that have culminated in the success of this evening’s concert.

Message from the Music Director
Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra (CUSO) under the royal patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Laung Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, has always been growing in terms of the number of concerts, its repertory, as well as the number of audiences. In recent years, performances under the organization of the CUSO have also branched out into concerts by various type of ensembles including performances of the “The Viola Lovers” orchestra, percussion ensemble, clarinet & saxophone ensembles, concert choir as well as string orchestra.
For today’s concert, the CUSO will feature 3 famous works starting with the Overture to the comic opera ‘The Barber of Seville’ by Gioachino Rossini, followed by 2 pieces of edutainment value; ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34 by Benjamin Britten and A Symphonic Tale ‘Peter & the Wolf’, Op. 67 by Sergei Prokofiev.
We are delighted to have Pijika Jittaputta as narrator in the Thai version of ‘Peter & the Wolf’ translation by Thepthana Palkavong na Ayudhaya and under the baton of Associate Professor Dr Nora-ath Chanklum, CUSO’s resident conductor.

Rossini was an Italian composer from the early Romantic period. He was a leading figure in the circle of Italian opera tradition, particularly of opera buffa (comic opera), with at least 39 operas to his credit.
He composed and staged ‘The Barber of Seville’, one of the greatest opera buffa in 1816 at the theatre Argentina in Rome. The plot and main characters are based on the French play ‘Le Barbier de Seville’ by Pierre Beaumarchais.
The Opera as well as its delightful Overture, featured in tonight’s concert, has been ever popular since its premiere the world over.

Britten was a British eminent pianist, conductor and composer of the 20th century. His compositions include almost all genres, both instrumental and vocal, large and small scale chamber works, stage works as well as music for films and documentaries.
He wrote ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op 34, subtitled ‘Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Henry Purcell (Another leading British composer from the Baroque era) in 1945 for the documentary film ‘Instruments of the Orchestra’ with aims to educate young people and general listeners to get acquainted with the sounds of each instrument of the symphony orchestra.
The work had its stage premiere in 1946 by the Liverpool Philharmonic conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. The Documentary, directed by Muir Mathieson, presented by the London Symphony Orchestra also with Sir Malcolm Sargent later in the same year. Since its premiere the piece has been one of Britten’s most popular works.
The work is in the Theme and Variations form plus a fugue ending. The main theme is borrowed from the Rondeau, the second piece from Purcell’s Abdelazer Suite. The straightforward yet attractive masculine theme presented from the start by the whole orchestra with each section of the instruments taking turn presenting the theme.
After the Theme is fully presented and recognized, the piece is then followed by 13 Variations with each variation played by instruments from each section of the orchestra, in the following order; the woodwinds, bowed strings plus a harp, brasses and percussions.
The piece ends with a fugue, an intricate polyphonic section based on the same theme, before ending in a grand style.
A Symphonic Tale ‘Peter & the Wolf’

Prokofiev was a Russian composer and a leading figure in the European artistic scene in the 20th century. He was also a piano virtuoso as well as a conductor. He composed in almost all musical genres popular at the time; Opera, Music to the Ballets, Concertos, symphonies, piano pieces as well as chamber works.
He wrote ‘Peter & the Wolf’ which he also added a subtitle ‘A Symphonic Tales’ in 1936 from a commission by Natalya Sats (1903-1993, the then director of the Children’s Theatre in Moscow. The work is one of the most successful educational pieces for children to enjoy as well as to help them learn and recognize the sounds and characters of various instruments of the orchestra.
After an ineffective attempt by another author, Prokofiev decided to write the tale himself about a brave young lad named ‘Peter’, together with his animal friends as well as their heroic act. Peter himself lives in a little house by the pond with his grumpy old grandpa in the woods.
The story begins one fresh morning when Peter takes a walk into the woods nearby, leaving the house gate open which makes his grandpa furious. Peter then meets his friends; a chirping little bird, a grumbling duck, a sly cat as well as a ferocious wolf and finally a team of hunters hunting for the wolf.
Each character is represented by a ‘leitmotif’ (a musical theme associated with a person, a character, certain situations or atmosphere.) played by appropriate musical instruments; for example Peter is represented by a cheerful theme played by the string section. The chirping bird played by the flute, the duck by the oboe, grandpa by the bassoon, the cat by a clarinet, the wolf by a group of 3 horns and finally the hunter with his gunshots by the drums.
The story is narrated and accompanied or interspersed with music from the orchestra. At the end, Peter and his birdy friend finally caught the wolf and the whole team including the hunters, walking proudly in procession to hand over the ferocious animal to the zoo.
For tonight’s concert, the story is narrated with the Thai translation by Thepthana Palkavong na Ayudhaya

Pijika Jittaputta
Storyteller
Pijika Jittaputta “Lookwa” earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts from Chulalongkorn University; Master from Mahidol University. An alumni of Chulalongkorn University Music Club (CU BAND)
Pijika frequently performed as guest vocalist for various artists such as Sepia Band, Joey Boy, Rudklao Amratisha etc. From 2005, she is well recognised as female vocalist of (Doobadoo Band)
In 2011, Pijika released her own solo album. Aside from her studio works Pijika also performed in numerous musical productions such as Sunset at Chaophraya (Khoo Kam The Musical), Mahajanaka, Chicago, Dreamgirls, The Sound of Music, Lod Line Mangkorn The Musical etc.

Nora-ath Chanklum
Conductor
Nora-ath started his conducting lessons with Richard Hornich at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, USA. After graduating his master’s degree, he joined the faculty member of the Department of Music, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University, and Academic Affair at the KPN Music Academy. He furthered his conducting studies with Assistant Professor Col. Choochart Pitaksakorn and regularly received advice on conducting form Dr. Pradhak Pradipasen.
In addition to playing the violin, his major instrument, Nora-ath continues his conducting activities in various kinds of music, including compositions by Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Ottorino Respighi etc. He also conducted and directed Gian Carlo Menotti’s Opera, The Medium.
In 2004, he was awarded a scholarship from Chulalongkorn University to study conducting with Michael Jinbo at the Pierre Monteux School of Conducting, Mains, USA. After having finished the course, he has regularly appeared as conductor with the Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and also as guest conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 Nora-ath was invited as guest conductor at the Yong Seaw Taw Conservatory, National University of Singapore and also as a jury for the conservatory’s concerto competition. In 2007 his violin solo recording “Tri” was awarded the Best Instrumental Recording by Khom Chud Luek magazine.
Currently, Nora-ath is a resident conductor of Chulalongkorn University Orchestra, and Guest Conductor of the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO).
From his dedication and numerous musical activities, Nora-ath was recently awarded the prestigious ‘Silapathorn’ Award for the year 2018.
