LORD M AY O R FOREWORD

CELEBRATE WITH US AND BRING HISTORY TO LIFE! In its 11th year and featuring more than 130 events and activities, Heritage Perth Weekend is brought to you by the City of Perth. This program will inspire you to come and experience Perth’s amazing natural, cultural and built heritage. We are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to places and stories of significance in the city. This weekend gives us a chance to delve deeper into our heritage with informative walks, talks, storytelling, interactive workshops, exhibitions and immersive experiences to explore. New events shine a light on our multicultural and Aboriginal history, including truth‑telling yarns from Whadjuk Nyoongar Elders and fun activities from the Chung Wah Association, just to name a couple from the many free events on offer. I am excited to announce the introduction of Family Friday, dedicated to families to experience our city’s rich past together. Coming from Greek heritage, I’m looking forward to bringing my young family along so that all of us can enjoy and learn more about our wonderful city. I look forward to seeing you all there! I WELCOME YOU ALL TO BOORLOO KWEDJANG BARDIP YANGINY (PERTH OLD STORY SHARING). This is an opportunity for all to come and engage with Nyoongar culture in the heart of Boorloo. My culture, Nyoongar Culture, is about stories – stories told to our children who learn our lore and culture. For our youth, it is about guiding them along in life. Our family is an extended family where we all come together, sit down, tell stories and share. In this year’s three‑day program, I invite you to bring along your extended families and take part in all the events on offer. Get the kids to paint and yarn with Djurandi Dreaming, or take part in Bindi Bindi Dreaming’s Aboriginal cooking classes and learn about our wonderful traditional bush foods. Come and sit around the sacred campfire at Mata Gerup with Moordity Bridyas Uncle Ben Taylor and Aunty Margaret Culbong who will tell you about the importance of this land to us. Come and hear our voice sharing our stories with you. Wandjoo Boorloo-k kwedjang bardip yanginy. Noonook yoowarl koorl ngalak dandjoo Nyoongar malayin koort Boorloo-k yanginy. Perth’s cultural identity is living, breathing and evolving. It is woven through our built, natural and social landscapes. With the guidance of the Bridyas (Elders/ bosses) we have introduced dual naming for this event to reflect the importance of the cultural heritage of the Whadjuk Nyoongar peoples of Boorloo (Perth). This program of events celebrates the many stories of our capital and its neighbourhoods. We hope these cultural events help create a better understanding of our shared history and the community we live in. Boorloo Kwedjang Baradip Yanginy – Perth Old Story Sharing.

In its 11th year, this weekend will shine a light on Perth City’s history. The weekend features the telling and re‑telling of stories, enthralling history and heritage walks, behind the scenes tours of iconic and curious heritage buildings, children’s activities and exhibitions. This year we are proud to announce an additional offering – Family Friday on 16th April. This day gives special focus on activities that support children and families to explore, learn and experience our City’s fascinating past together, encouraging the next generation of cultural heritage champions. We welcome everyone to enjoy the events on offer and to share in the stories of the past with friends and family. Enjoy!

We have an incredible 133 events happening over the weekend throughout the City. We have more than 30 first time presenters this year and we warmly welcome them to the program.

47 events are on offer on Family Friday with 22 of these designed for families with children, perfect for school holiday activities.

We welcome Jim Morrison from Yokai, an organisation that supports the survivors and families of the Stolen Generation. Yokai invites you to come and listen to the sharing of stories. This event will take place in the dedicated place for healing in Wellington Square, also named Koolangka Koolangka Waabiny, meaning Children Children’s Playground in Whadjuk Nyoongar language. We are delighted to welcome Traditional Owner, Kerry‑Ann Winmar, Nyungar Tours, who has a strong family history of ancient customs and traditions in Beeloo (Perth) and Kaarta Gar‑up (Kings Park). Kerry Ann will present Yorga Mia – Women’s Business, sharing ancient knowledge of the bush that was passed down to her for generations. We also welcome the Chung Wah Association, who extend a warm invitation for visitors to learn about early Chinese history in Perth and Western Australia. The Association was formed in 1910 to support the social welfare of its members, promote Chinese culture and foster goodwill between the Chinese and local community. Bring your family and take part in the whole day of cultural activities, workshops and exhibitions they have on offer on Family Friday. CircusWA is another exciting new presenter with young performers to take you on a trip back to the popular circus days of Perth in the 1920s, giving us all the chance to experience the shenanigans of the old circus spectacles.

You can turn up at any time to many of these events, including ‘Perth Wasn’t Built in a Day – Sensational Surveying, a life without limits’. Presented by the WA Institution of Surveyors, these interactive workshops at Cathedral Square invite families to experience firsthand the old methods surveyors used for the surveys of the Perth townsite in the 1880s. Bindi Bindi Dreaming will be cooking up a storm in the Perth Town Hall, offering intergenerational traditional bush cooking classes for the whole family, gathering to share the meal at the end. Western Power is presenting family workshops for the first time where you can discover how the energy industry plays a critical part in the development of the city in ‘Innovating the electricity grid, past, present and future’. The recently refurbished His Majesty’s Theatre will be holding behind the scenes tours and activities where visitors can explore staging technology used to make magic happen. With so many events on offer on Family Friday there is something for everyone to take delight from.

NEW OFFERINGS

This weekend just wouldn’t be the same without the continued support of long‑term Heritage Weekend presenters: Perth’s popular heritage author and advocate Richard Offen will present an engaging talk on Perth’s Oldest Buildings, telling the story of their birth and the people behind their creation. There are some fascinating heritage walking tours on offer by the UWA Historical Society where you can discover the history, art and architecture of the heritage buildings of the UWA Campus.

This year we have expanded the program to include some surprising and unexpected presenters. Celia Tait, Executive Producer of the hit TV Series Every Family Has A Secret, will present a talk on what it takes to create a hit history series, sharing behind the scene workings of investigative historical research. On a completely different topic, Dr Glenn Moore, Curator of Fishes at WA Museum‑Boola Bardip, will present an engaging talk on the role of the history of fish biodiversity in Perth and why the museum collects.

Heritage favourite Wesley Church recently celebrated 150 years since it opened in 1870. Plan your visit so you can enjoy one of the wonderful recitals performing over the weekend, featuring some of Perth’s top young performers as well as some of Perth’s premier classical music groups.

Exhibitions include “The women should have a voice”: Edith Cowan’s legacy of social justice in Western Australia at Perth’s oldest standing building, the Old Law Court Museum. Check out the very relevant “Unknown Territory – Royal Perth Hospital and a History of Epidemics” at the Royal Perth Hospital Museum. Something for everyone!

8 HISTORY TOURS WITH A NEW PERSPECTIVE Three fascinating guided walks by everyone's favourite historian, Eddie Marcus. Offering a new perspective on our heritage that you won't read in history books.

THE MYSTICAL WORLD BEHIND PERTH’S HERITAGE

LADIES OF THE NIGHT – SEX WORKERS IN OLD PERTH
