Stay safe and well in 2021 Things have changed a lot since the global pandemic in 2020, especially the way of celebrating festivals in most of the places around the world. Chinese New Year is just around the corner, it is about family reunion. Inevitably, this year is challenging for celebrating the festival together with family living overseas, however, I feel extremely blessed that Chung Wah is able to continue hosting the biggest Chinese New Year Fair in Perth, bringing joy to the community at large during this difficult time. In this Chinese New Year edition of Chung Wah Magazine, we bring you more detailed information about the 2021 Perth Chinese New Year Fair, and the fortune forecast for the twelve Chinese zodiac signs for the year 2021.

Towards the end of December 2020, there was a couple of exciting news, including the bi-partisan state election commitment of $5 million to build a Chung Wah community centre south of the river. On the other hand, Chung Wah actively committed to provide care and love to the marginalised and disadvantaged population, including the homeless community, especially during the Christmas and the upcoming Chinese New Year period. More details can be found in our Chung Wah news pages.

Respect for the elderly is greatly valued in our community, which isusually seen during Chinese New Year. Our media team has produced a meaningful short video to convey the message of caring for our loved ones. We strongly urge our readers to subscribe to Chung Wah YouTube channel.

Thanks again for your continued support. Wishing all our readers a safe, happy and prosperous 2021 Year of the Ox!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, 2020 was a challenging year for us all. As the Year of the Ox is kicking in, on behalf of the Executive Committee (EXCO), I wish our Chung Wah members and families, as well as all our friends and supporters of the Chung Wah Association, Happy Chinese New Year and a healthy and safe year ahead.

2

The new year is always a good time to reflect on the past twelve months and set new resolutions. In 2020, with the active involvement and participation of our members and the hard work of our EXCO members and office staff, Chung Wah Association achieved another milestone in community development. All the efforts we made are being acknowledged by all levels of government. This is best evidenced from the bi-partisan election commitment of both the McGowan Government and the Opposition, led by Mr Zak Kirkupwho announced late December 2020, to contribute $5 million to the building of a Chung Wah community centre south of the river.

I am proud to see the continued excellent performance of our existing services, such as community and aged care services, growing expansion of our Chung Wah Chinese schools and cultural and arts groups. With the support of government funding, we created more communication platforms, enabling us to diversify our media channels to deliver important

news and messages to the community at large.

In addition, Chung Wah also performed its leadership role to consolidate the Chinese community efforts in protecting the interests of the community by saying ‘No’ to discrimination, and at the same time, providing care, love and assistance to the marginalised and disadvantaged community in Perth.

In December last year, we managed to collect donations from members of our community for the purpose of buying and giving away free healthy meals to 200 people from the homeless community. This idea was proposed and executed by our Executive Editor, Elvie Yap, who volunteered her time and contributed part of the expenses of the event.

With the Chinese New Year approaching, we would love to continue the vision of our past Presidents and Life Members, to project the image of the Chinese community as being generous and willing to contribute to the society. Thankfully, we secure a donation from the Australia Central China Golf Association Inc. to host a charity luncheon for the existing clients of various community agencies, who look after the marginalised, particularly the homeless community. The City of Perth Lord Mayor, Basil Zempilas, was the guest speaker at the event.

In the Year of the Ox, we will continue our care and love for the community. Also, one of our major projects for the new year is to fundraise for the Autumn Centre building project. I was informed that a late member of Chung Wah, Mr Quan Lee Wong, who donated $105,072.42 to Chung Wah Association on 9 March 2011 upon his passing. The amount, plus interest, will be used towards the establishment of the Chung Wah Autumn Centre in the near future. The Chung Wah Executive Committee would like to express our deepest appreciation to Mr Wong for his generosity. We would also like to thank the Chung Wah Community and Aged Care Finance Department for keeping an excellent record of the money transactions in the past 10 years, as well as CAC’s Board Secretary, Mr Jeff Hughes, for volunteering his time to investigate the records and put together a thorough report in a chronological order. Our members can feel assured that the money has been looked after properly and it will be used only for the benefit of our members.

Chung Wah Association is Perth’s oldest ethnic organisation. It is the home to all the Chinese in Western Australia. We will continue to build and develop the Association to greater heights in 2021.

Mr Zak Kirkup MLA Leader of the Opposition

As we begin the Chinese year of the Ox, I am pleased to extend my best wishes for peace, health and prosperity to Western Australia’s Chinese community and everyone celebrating the Lunar New Year. As the Leader of the Liberal Party in Western Australia, a state which is home to almost 100,000 residents of Chinese heritage, I know how fortunate we are to live in a place of rich cultural diversity where acceptance, encouragement, and respect for different traditions adds so much vibrancy to our community. Lunar New Year celebrations also provide a wonderful opportunity to recognise and thank all West Australians of Chinese heritage, as well as those from other countries who celebrate the occasion, including Vietnam and Korea, for the significant contribution they have made to our state over many generations. I hope that everyone enjoys this special celebration and that the year ahead is filled with happiness, success and good health for all of your friends, family members and loved ones.

NEW YEAR GREETINGS

Chinese New Year Message from the Acting Chinese Consul-General

As the arrival of the Spring Festival marks the start of the Year of the Ox in 2021, on behalf of the Chinese Consulate General in Perth, I wish to convey my warmest greetings of the season and best wishes to the Chung Wah Association and the WA Chinese community. 2020 was an extraordinary year which saw the confluence of a once-in-a-century pandemic and a shift in the century-old global status quo. Under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese people joined together in heart and mind and found strength in unity. We were the first in getting the pandemic under control, realising positive economic growth and conducting the largest scale global humanitarian relief effort since the founding of the modern Chinese state. We also further popularised the idea of constructing a community of shared future for mankind. China’s achievements have attracted the world’s attention, and the robustness and vitality of China’s development have gained global recognition. This year, the Chung Wah Association celebrates 110 years since its foundation. For more than a century, the association has actively serviced Chinese nationals in WA, promoted Chinese culture, worked in the interest of the public and charity, and made a positive contribution towards enhancing WA’s multiculturalism and the friendly exchange between China and WA. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chung Wah Association and the local community have helped and protected one another, overcoming the current difficulties together and moving forward hand in hand. In 2021, China will embark on a new journey towards the complete construction of a modern socialist state. I hope the Chung Wah Association and the WA Chinese community maintain their interest in the economic and social development of their (ancestral) homeland, make further contributions to the post-COVID recovery of the WA economy, and keep positive that Sino-Australian relations will soon be back on track. The Chinese Consulate General in Perth will continue to wholeheartedly serve Chinese nationals as it always has done. I wish you all a happy Year of the Ox and may all your hopes be fulfilled!

hung Wah Association is committed to protecting the welfare and interest of our community. We are also doing our part, as Australians, to offer our care and love to the marginalised and disadvantaged in the society.

On Monday, 21 December 2020, Chung Wah Association organised two hundred meals from Subway for the homeless population in the City of Perth area, which were redeemed with pre-arranged vouchers. During the Christmas period, families anticipate festive celebrations, however there are many who are homeless and struggling to have a basic meal. The Chung Wah Association does not forget these members of our society, who face daily hunger and isolation from the community. An increased number of homeless people was noted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The Member for South Metropolitan Region, Honourable Kate Doust MLC, showed her support by attending the event. She was interviewed by the Chung Wah online video news team and talked about the social issues of the homeless. Chung Wah initiated a Chinese New Year Charity Luncheon, held on Sunday, 31 January 2021, for this vulnerable community, with the sponsorship of the Australia Central China Golf Association Inc. The event was held at the renowned Chinese restaurants, Han Palace.

Homelessness is a complex issue that may not be unique to Western Australia, but has certainly become a growing concern in the battle against COVID-19. The Member for South Metropolitan Western Australia, Kate Doust, said, “ The McGowan Labor Government has acknowledged the difficulties that people are experiencing within our state with homelessness, particularly as a result of COVID and has recently announced an election commitment of more than $1 billion to deal with housing issues, and homelessness issues, with a variety of projects that will be initiated after the election.” On 20 December 2020, the WA Government announced a plan to build the second Common Ground facilities, the first in East Perth, and the second in the City of Mandurah, located 65 kilometres south of Perth. The Common Ground model provides people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness, with permanent homes and support services on site. But who exactly are the homeless community of Western Australia? Chung Wah Focus posed that question to Debra Zanella, the CEO of Ruah Community Services, a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to assist and provide support for the homeless. CEO of Ruah Community Services, Ms Zanella said, “When Ruah talks about homelessness, we are talking about those people who are sleeping on the street and they are encountered by the general public. That group of people, over 40% of that group of people, are Aboriginal people, women escaping violence, are the highest entrants into street-present people, we’ve got people who’ve acquired quite bad brain injuries, who are in that group of people, who are rough sleeping. “So, predominantly men, in terms of those

who are sleeping on the streets at the moment, and a significant portion of the Aboriginal group that are culturally and linguistically diverse, and then others.” It’s estimated that over 9,000 West Australians experience homelessness every night. While that number may not appear at first glance to be a large proportion of the 2.74 million population in WA, many social organisations believe that, unless steps are taken quickly to address the problem, homelessness will be on the rise. The CEO of Tan & Tan Lawyers, Raymond Tan, said, “In the last 11 years, I’ve been taking part annually with the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, which is a fundraising event raising funds for the homeless in WA and all over Australia. I’ve taken part for the last 11 years and each year, WA raises up to nearly $1 million to help the homeless in WA. “It is a problem that is not going away, and in fact, it’s a growing problem, and with the pandemic, I would say that the problem is getting worse. So, it’s very much up to the government, and a lot of associations like Chung Wah Association, that have put their hands up to help these people who do need help, and you would not believe what kind of homeless people we get, and how they become homeless.” Not many people will realise that,

according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, fourty-two percent of the clients of specialist homelessness services have experienced family and domestic violence. Another major contributor of homelessness is loss of jobs, a situation which social community workers believe will be an increasingly serious problem in the near future.

“There are a couple of reasons why we are seeing an increase in homelessness. Unfortunately, I think it’s only in the early days, we’re going to see a significant increase come the end of March when the moratorium on evictions comes to pass and we’re already starting to see people becoming quite anxious about the fact that their landlords are going to seek future rents from them when they can’t afford to, and JobSeeker actually finishes as well,” says Ms Zanella. There are often misconceptions and myths around the homeless. Much of these views stems from a lack of understanding of the homeless, and the circumstances that led to their situation. Raymond Tran, from the marginalised community in Perth, who experienced homeless for a few weeks, said, “I used to have a good family but then, because of using drugs, it came downhill. But now God has saved me, and He has loved me and cared for me, and the last

two years, God has given me a roof over my head now. “I am still struggling with my back and my mental illness. My mental illness came from 20 years of having drugs, also from hard drugs, heroine, methamphetamines. “My father passed away when I was young, I was 15, 16, and I had a rough living condition. I escaped from Vietnam under the communist government. We fled the country when I was 8 years old.” Raymond witnessed horrific crimes during his family’s attempt to escape the communist government of Vietnam. These events caused him a lifetime of trauma and pain. “The whole boat was robbed, the women got raped by the pirates. They were about to ram into our boat and kill everyone, but luckily, God was helping us. We got help from a big container ship, I think it was German, they gave us food, drinks and petrol, and we got to Malaysia,” says Raymond. From Malaysia, where he and the other survivors of the boat lived in refugee camps run by the United Nations, Raymond was soon sent to Sydney, Australia, as an asylum seeker. The issue of homelessness, and the root causes of it, is complicated, and like Raymond’s story, rarely ever has a onesize-fits-all solution. The government’s plan to provide additional funding for social housing has been welcomed by many organisations

dealing with the homeless, but Ms Zanella from Ruah Community Services said more needs to be done.

food program aimed at offering free meals of Subway sandwiches to the homeless community.

“We absolutely have an inadequate amount of stock of appropriate, permanent housing and we need the support to help people in their homes so that they are successful in their tenancies.”

The program saw the participation of several volunteers, who were eager to extend some Christmas cheer to the vulnerable members of our society. One such volunteer was Eddy Eau. He said,

“One of the really important bits of data that we know from running the “50 loves 50 homes” project is that without support, people maintain their tenancies at around 40%. With support, in an appropriate home, they maintain between 80-90%. The evidence is pretty clear about what works, we need more of it,” says Ms Zanella.

“When you come across a homeless person, the first reaction of many people, is that “Oh, they’re going to ask something from you.” And I personally think that is the first wrong impression we generally have. Like you and me, they need care. Some people are homeless because of misfortune, however a hand of caring, a greeting or wishes, or even sometimes you can help, that will make a difference to someone who needs the care.”

Ruah supports the homeless in a variety of ways, including setting up ID clinics which can help clients get access to benefits and housing applications. The organisation also sets up a network of support services that addresses the individual circumstances that lead their clients to homelessness. These services also make changes to the life of Raymond. Apart from providing funding for housing and other support infrastructure, the government is also supporting not-forprofit organisations, as well as members of the community, in working out a solution to the problem of homelessness. Many organisations have answered to this call for help, in one way or another. Just before Christmas this year, Chung Wah Association launched its Christmas

Ms Zanella believes that, as much as the not-for-profit organisations and businesses have an important role to play in supporting government, the problem of homelessness is one which all members of society must embrace and address. “Of the many hundreds of people that we come into contact on a daily basis, I’ve never met one person who is sleeping on the street who chooses to be there. So, to dispel those kinds of myths with each other and to understand some of the circumstances that bring people into homelessness,” says Ms Zanella. The hallmark of any developed and progressive society is how its weakest and most vulnerable are treated. As Western Australia continues to develop and thrive, the issue of homelessness will not simply disappear. It is with the joint-efforts of government, businesses, not-for-profit organisations and the people of Western Australia, that will lead to positive outcomes to solve this problem. Because, ultimately, every Western Australian has the right to a safe home.

A fresh start for business in 2021

or many small businesses, 2021 is being seen as a fresh start after the challenges of the past year.

In Western Australia, there are strong signs of economic and business recovery that will deliver benefits to the small business community.

additional workers in the next six months, rising to more than a third of business in construction, and nearly a third of those in retail.

Data collected on both a national and state level demonstrates that the small business sector has been very resilient during and following the initial disruption of the pandemic. The Small Business Counts report by the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman found that:

In addition to these reports, Australian Bureau of Statistics November 2020 data showed that the number of jobs in WA exceeded pre-COVID levels, making this the only state in the nation to show an increase in employment following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Small businesses lead on innovation, giving them better outcomes in employment, profitability and productivity than bigger businesses. • Fourty per cent of small businesses changed their operations in 2020 to adapt to the new environment of the COVID-19 pandemic. • Sixty per cent of the country’s apprentices and trainees are employed by small enterprises, making them the leading provider of on-the-job training in the nation. On a state level, the Bankwest Curtin Economic Centre (BCEC) reported early results from their Small Business Survey 2020, which showed that: • nearly half of small businesses surveyed had accessed the JobKeeper wage subsidy. • more than a quarter of small businesses expected to employ

Of course, there are still many challenges for small business owners. Payment times continue to be a focus, with more late payments recorded in 2020 than in previous years. Mental wellbeing is also a concern, with nearly half of small business owners in the BCEC Small Business Survey reporting mental or physical health problems, attributed to the stress of running a business. In 2021, the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) will continue to provide practical, accessible support to WA business owners as our state recovers. Buoyed by a state economy that is showing better than anticipated growth in employment and revenue, and renewed business and consumer confidence, the SBDC will ensure small businesses have the support and tools they need to maximise opportunities and thrive this year.

A

s we age, we have different objectives in life. For me, I have been quite persistent in pursuing my goals, to which I have committed, regardless of the barriers of age and lifestyle changes. I remember that, in the early days when I started my working life, I did not mind spending time and effort beyond what was required, or even my own money, in order to accomplish a meaningful project or assignment. I wonder why this attitude has been with me. In fact, I find it is not uncommon that many people in Australia share a similar attitude. In the new Western Australian Museum, there is an exhibit of Timmy, a taxidermy pet dog in the Reflections gallery. The owner of Timmy, at the age of 21, spent all her money to taxidermy her pet dog, who died of old age, in order to continue keeping the dog’s body. For the past six months, I have been extremely busy working three part-time jobs that I am passionate about, looking after two school-age children and managing household chores. In addition, I have also been actively involved in volunteering for the multicultural community. The volunteering work I do includes organising sport activities for migrant communities together with other non-profit organisations, assisting the local library to organise bilingual story time sessions and Chinese New Year celebrations for the community. My friends often ask me about my time management tips. I believe the most important factor is the motivation to take action or put words into action. Many people tend to spend a lot of time in measuring the returns for their time and effort before taking on a new assignment or challenge. In many cases, such time spent could be better used to accomplish a task that could make a difference to the society. Some friends, who have known me for almost twenty years, are curious on how I can keep the passion in volunteering when most of them are busy raising their family. Even my partner will sometimes feel that I am quite stubborn in trying to complete relatively time-consuming missions. What I can say is, most of the time, it is only yourself who can feel the satisfaction of feeling rich at heart when you complete a mission for the community.

She is experienced in working with children, teenagers and adults with stress, depression, anxiety, worries and anger. She is passionate about supporting children with special needs (e.g. autism, ADHD and dyslexia) and their families.

Recognising the impact of family of origin on parenting 32

A

s another year starts, we often reflect on the past year and think of some new year resolutions. I wonder if you have any new year resolutions about your parenting. What sort of parent do you want to be? Which good values do you want to continue to uphold? What habits would you like to change? These are some of the questions I ask myself too. As a therapist with a family systems approach, I regularly work with families with children and teenagers, who have complex behavioural presentations, such as severe aggression, addiction, anxiety and depression. One of the common themes, as we curiously explore with parents, is how our family of origin and attachment patterns impact on our parenting. For example, a parent talked about how her father was an alcoholic and would physically abuse her when she was young. Now that she is a mother, she found it hard to tolerate and regulate her son’s emotions. At times, she yelled at her son. Other times, she might just become emotionless, zone out and ignore her son. As her son’s anger grew and his emotions became overwhelming, he sometimes hit the mother and demanded her attention more aggressively when the mother zoned out. The more the mother withdrew from the interaction, the more aggressive the son became. It became another vicious cycle of domestic

violence and the mother felt as if her son had become the perpetrator and that she was reliving her childhood nightmare. While the abovementioned is an extreme example, it is not uncommon. When it comes to the parent-child interaction, it is not about blaming either the parent(s) or the child. It is about working out how the learning history plays up over time. We describe this interaction like a dance - a Tango where our moves impact on each other. Sometimes, the talk therapy is about creating a safe and compassionate space, to allow this process of talking about our family of origin and attachment patterns, understanding how our previous history gets triggered in the moment, understanding the child’s temperament and personal characteristics, and more importantly, working out what we are going to do now that we have this conscious awareness. Not to forget that, as a couple, sometimes the father and the mother come from two entirely different families with different sets of values and culture, where history and experiences may have very different interpretations of the behaviour. All these will impact on our thoughts and actions in the moment. Family of origin refers to the family unit in which you grew up. It is not referring to the biological family but the people that cared for you as a child. For a lot of Asian families, it can be grandparents, parents, aunts or uncles, or family friends. They can also include your older siblings, cousins or people that live with you. Psychological research showed that our family of origin influences our worldview, and how we interact with others (e.g. friendships, intimate relationships, parenting and self-esteem). It also affects our mental and physical health. If you have a healthy family of origin to refer to for your

Chung Wah Quarterly Bilingual Magazine Summer Issue

“relationship template,” you may find that you can relate with others with confidence and ease. However, if there were hurt and trauma in your family of origin, you may be more insecure and avoidant when relating to others. For example, if growing up, you were constantly compared against your cousins who did everything better than you, perhaps you might constantly feel like you are “not good enough”. Without reflecting upon your family of origin, you may pass on the same beliefs or try to over-compensate in parenting your children. At times, we hear about parents who unconsciously make their children “relive” their “unfinished childhood business”. At times, we hear about parents being too enmeshed with the children, that they find it hard to set boundaries with their children. If your parents were cold or constantly arguing, the distress you felt as a helpless child may continue to impact how you relate to your partner. If your families were estranged or you felt your needs were neglected as a child, you may be feeling isolated and depressed, or find it hard to share joy and celebrate with your child now. No families are perfect. It is not about blaming our parents and siblings, or our past selves. Recognising the previous hurt and trauma as a young child, and treating our inner child with compassion through therapy work, may help us to individuate as a healthy adult and also to consciously make a choice to become the parent that we want to be. Otherwise, we may unknowingly repeat the same relationship patterns with our children. That is how intergenerational trauma continues to stay. You are the one, when making the conscious effort to do the healing work, who can break the cycle of trauma and hurt.

Two months ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I went through the necessary procedures and surgery, and I may go through radiotherapy treatment later. My doctor advised me to continue with my regular diet. However, some of my friends have encouraged me to consider a vegetarian diet, cutting off meat intake. Do you think having a vegetarian diet would improve my health condition? Having breast cancer and undergoing radiotherapy can weaken your body and immune system. Therefore, it is ideal to have a good, balanced food intake to keep up with the energy and nutrition required to get through these treatments. If you would like to try a vegetarian diet, it is best to involve a dietician to guide you through how to calculate the calories and ensure you have a balanced food intake to meet the demand for your daily body function needs, especially during and after radiotherapy.

My five-year-old daughter experienced pneumonia three years ago. Recently, she has been coughing for more than a month. An antibiotic was prescribed to her. She has pretty much recovered but occasionally she still coughs. In recent days, when she had excessive physical activity, she would have wheezing. Do you think I should worry about it? Answer: Yes, you should not ignore your daughter’ s wheezing. If she has been having symptoms of wheezing at home, you need to take her to a medical centre for a check-up. And the doctor would decide if further imaging is needed. She would need to be checked for asthma, and to rule out the risk of partially-treated pneumonia or any other causes for her wheezing.

I am 38 years old. I have been trying to have a second child in the past three years. However, I have gone through multiple miscarriages (four times) during the first trimester all these years. I am not sure what I can do to fulfil my dream of having a second child. Do you have any advice?

3

5

6

Having a miscarriage can be very stressful. And if you have already gone through four times of miscarriages, it means that it is time to check with your general practice doctor to refer you to a fertility specialist to have a full examination and further investigation. The fertility specialist can provide you an individualised and tailored plan for more fertility options depending on the outcome of the investigation. Other things you could try to do is to cut down stress, unwind the busy lifestyle, tone down the expectactions, while keep trying for a baby and also maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

I am in my late 40s, and seriously considering changing to a vegetarian diet. Is it true that being a vegan may make me age rapidly due to a lack of collagen? Is there any supplement that can be recommended to a vegan? There are vegetables and fruits that can increase collagen. So, consult a dietician for further advise as they could assist on this matter.

For the recent two weeks, I feel knee pain when I walk down the staircase. It is not a sharp pain, just some sort of pain or discomfort. Could you let me know the reason for this symptom? It is hard to know the cause of the knee pain by only looking at the historical information. Therefore, your next step would be to see your general practice doctor for an examination plus at least an X-ray to investigate the true cause of the knee pain. Then, depending on the diagnosis, the doctor would advise you on further treatments.

Many of my friends install a tap water filter at home. Is it necessary to have a tap water filter in Australia? What would be the consequences of drinking tap water in the long term? In Australia, we have very good water filter systems without installing filters. However, it depends on the quality of piping and material of the water pipeline. If you have any concerns, you can get the water to be tested. And if it has unsafe particles or more concerning heavy metal, it is a good idea to install filters.

COMMUNITY & AGE CARE

Journey into the beautiful “Golden Era”

C

hung Wah CAC’s theme for 2021 is “The Golden Era”. This was announced during the 2020 ‘Christmas Week’ special celebrations held in our Balcatta and Willetton community hubs. Our CEO, Mrs Theresa Kwok, sent her best wishes to all consumers for a great festive season and surprised them with secret gifts – the consumers’ portraits. Special thanks to William, our volunteer photographer. These portraits captured the consumers’ precious moments and highlighted their timeless beauty. facilitating a healthier lifestyle filled with free choices, positive communication, and social inclusion. At Chung Wah CAC, we instil these factors into our community hubs’ daily activities, which act as a social platform to empower our consumers to build new friendships and connectedness. Moreover, our staff and support workers are providing necessary assistance to help consumers to maintain their independence. Our consumers have full control over their lives and are free to choose to participate in the hub activities based on their interest and ability. We at CAC pledge to help our consumers rediscover their best self and celebrate their Golden Era in a supportive and mutually respectful environment. Together, let’s build a ‘better community for all.’

36

Many people may consider physical beauty trivial. The striking portraits mirrored our consumers’ inner beauty, including wisdom, kindness, personality, trustworthiness, passion for life and so on. These qualities of beauty show that age is truly just a number. Topping the list is the gorgeous ‘beauty of sacrifice’. In Asian culture, the elderly often takes responsibility for looking after their family along their life course. These portraits touched the hearts of our

consumers and soothed their souls during our events. We have received enormous positive feedback from our consumers, particularly those living with dementia. The power of images has rekindled their deep memories and gave them a sense of peace and joy.

The portraits have ‘woken up’ our consumers’ passion for life and helped them to pursue their beauty. To set our feet on the “Golden Era” journey, Mrs Kwok appealed to our consumers to take better care of themselves, rewarding themselves with nice clothes every season (quarter), and using their inner beauty to move forward. “It’s time to take better care of yourselves and reward yourselves with nice clothes every season”, Mrs Theresa Kwok said.

Moreover, beauty often reflects one’s selfconfidence and self-respect, which are the key factors in maintaining one’s dignity and

Chung Wah Association Spotlight on Teenagers (No.2)

A Review of the Health Benefits of Dancing as a physical exercise for Teenagers

1. Dancing, as a physical sport, can help improve stamina in teenagers. Experiments have shown that during dancing competitions, Latin dances can increase the body’s metabolic rate by 60-80%, which in the case of cha-cha or samba, can last for 10 minutes.

42

2. Dancing can increase cardiovascular function in teenagers. This kind of exercise involves a wide range of motion. While dancing, the posture must be kept with the chest lifted and the belly held in. This forces the chest cavity to expand, increasing vital lung capacity. Chest breathing involves taking deeper, stronger breaths, which helps to improve respiratory function and simultaneously, strengthen cardiopulmonary function. 3. Benefits to Teenagers’ Mental Health:

i. Helps the participant to feel good, putting them in a good mental state. ii. Trains teenagers to be independent.

iii. Fosters the development of a positive view of oneself.

iv. Promotes interpersonal communication. Letting teenagers vent their emotions and connect with others helps them to reduce stress and satisfy their mental needs.

5. Dancing, as a physical sport, can develop character, increase selfconfidence, and help teenagers to appreciate beauty better.

6. It can transform the cooperation between dance partners into a process of information sharing and communicating one’s emotions. This kind of longterm cooperation improves teenagers’ mental development and benefits their social and work relationships.
