THIS YEAR WE HOSTED OUR SECOND ANNUAL GALA UNDER THE banner Broadway Bound, at which our stellar CFS Choir sang this well-known hit song from the musical, Rent. The question of how any of us might measure a life, or a point in time within it, is as old as our shared human quest to lead lives of purpose and joyful experience. And, as many of you well know, just having the opportunity to engage this possibility makes all the difference.

In this Report, we ask and respond to a similar question about the impact our school program has on a boy’s life. We continue to believe that Church Farm School and its mission dedicated to offering this kind of opportunity does have a profound and lasting impact, as measured by: • The growing number of boys served who might otherwise continue to languish at the social, economic and educational margins of our society; • The increased number of graduates headed to four-year colleges, many with the kind of scholarships and grants needed to complete those programs; • The unique diversity of our population and range of worldviews and perspectives found here—needed for effective and caring communication in a shrinking global community; • The financial resources committed to sustaining this effort, where nearly two-thirds of our population pays only 10% or less of our stated tuition; • And the growing number of individuals and businesses choosing to support this work through the Griffin Scholars Program, EITC/OSTC programs, the Gala, the Golf Classic and our Annual Fund.

While the measure of a life remains mostly subjective, we are working harder to learn from our graduates about the impact this experience has on them and shaping today’s CFS accordingly. We are asking the same question of our dear friends who support our work through their prayers and philanthropic response to God’s call—making sure we match their resources with continued resolve and success. And we will continue to share with you what we come to learn in future reports and communications from this special campus.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD RECENTLY MY WIFE AND I SAW THE BROADWAY PLAY CHURCHILL, about the wartime leader of Great Britain. At one point, brandishing his cigar and jutting out his chin, Churchill recounts his famous entreaty to Franklin Roosevelt, leader of the then-neutral USA, for arms and material to fight Hitler: “Mr. President, give US the tools and we’ll FINISH the job.”

I thought of this historical incident as I drafted this letter because of something else Churchill said—that American aid, a trickle at first but then a floodtide— had a huge impact on Britain as it fought for freedom.

In this report we describe another type of impact: the impact you have as donors on the worthy cause of educating young men of ability and promise.

Most of these students, because of their varied life circumstances, could only dream of a college preparatory education in a boarding school. But you are making that dream a reality with your generous giving.

In Memory of Erwin Roeser ’41 Erwin Roeser ’41, the first CFS alum to serve on our board of directors, passed away this March. A member of the choir, he was honored at the Chapel Memorial Service during Alumni Weekend.

DAVID FOLEY ’65 A LASTING IMPACT GROWING UP IN A DIFFICULT, SINGLE-PARENT FAMILY SITUATION in inner city Baltimore, David Foley ’65 was especially grateful to find such a wonderful role model in Earl Wilkins ’26—an athletic director, principal and teacher at Church Farm School. “Many alumni remember Mr. Wilkins as hard.

I think of him as calm and logical. He came back to the place that gave him a chance and offered one to me.”

Taking a chance on young men is what Church Farm School has done since 1918. “Everyone was very much aware that our experience was unique,” Foley recalls. “We knew our parents were paying what they could and that we were working to maintain the school and ourselves.” While there have been changes made to the school’s farm and work program over the last 20 years, Foley says the mission hasn’t wavered. “CFS is still taking young men from unproductive surroundings where they wouldn’t thrive and changing their lives,” he says.

Foley is unsure how he arrived at CFS in 1961, but he thinks working as a junior counselor at the YMCA in Baltimore for C. David Southwick ’54 might have been the impetus. Although the school couldn’t have been more different from Foley’s urban life, he says, “I learned so many things others haven’t had an opportunity to do, such as living on a working farm and learning a mechanical trade while receiving a college-preparatory education. This experience couldn’t help but serve me well for the rest of my life.”

After CFS, Foley studied chemical engineering and then biology at Lafayette College, before earning his M.S. and Ph.D. in biology from Lehigh University and his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine. He then performed his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Foley pursued physician roles in emergency medicine in Maryland, Delaware, Arizona (working on a Native American reservation) and Texas before settling into his current role at Three Lower Counties Community Services (TLCCS) in Salisbury.

TLCCS is a nonprofit community health center that provides primary care medical, dental and mental health services to those who might otherwise not be able to afford it. “It has been extremely rewarding to give back after having been given the gift of opportunity by so many others, primarily Church Farm School,” he says.

TIFFANY SCOTT IMPACTING THEIR FUTURE MANY ARE EAGER TO PAT CHURCH FARM SCHOOL’S NEW DIRECTOR of College Guidance, Tiffany Scott, on the back for the Class of 2015’s fantastic college acceptances and scholarships, but she is hesitant to accept the praise.

“These boys really did it themselves.” Scott is being humble. She introduced a wealth of new, positive experiences to the students, and the results are indisputable.

For example, she exceeded her goal of 20 college visits to Church Farm School by 10, and those visits can be directly attributed to admission. Wesleyan University, current home to Khizar Qureshi ’15, knew nothing about CFS before visiting the campus. “Once these schools came, they were very impressed by our students and our mission. It gave a face and a story to who we are,” she says.

Another goal Scott set was surveying alumni to glean the areas in which they felt most ill-prepared in college. Some of the obvious answers rose to the top—interaction with women and time management—but financial struggles were also a very real issue and one she has spent a lot of effort addressing, particularly with juniors, to whom she introduced the “College Planning” course.

“College Planning” focused on finding right-fit schools, thinking about majors, introducing them to the Naviance financial aid system and researching scholarships, along with guaranteeing each junior participated in SAT planning before the year was out. Scott also collaborated with the English department to ensure each junior wrote an application statement before they left for the summer. Finally, each student was asked to create a scholarship contract over the summer where they outlined their top five schools, their accountability partners and how much money they would need to attend their top schools.

The Class of 2015 is now onto a new chapter in their life. Scott hopes that in their new “homes” (see list on page 8), they will experience the same sense of brotherhood they found at CFS. “They all have the intrinsic goal of being successful here and going to college. But they aren’t competitive about it. They try to make each other better and mentor each other, even within their own grade. Whether the news was positive or negative, I was blown away by their camaraderie throughout the process,” she says.

Excerpts from Commencement address by Class of 2015 Valedictorian Mike Lee:

“THE FIRST DAY I WALKED INTO THIS CHAPEL, I WAS A TOTALLY different person. I was utterly overwhelmed by anxiety, fear and uncertainty. I was thousands of miles away from home. Even worse, I could barely introduce myself in English. Surprisingly, I succeeded in academics. I slept two hours a day, memorizing every single word in the textbook. My inner competitiveness could not let me down. It compelled me to do whatever I could do to meet my high standards. Yet, it could not stop me from feeling alone.

Many days I spent feeling vulnerable, thinking that I may end up failing to be who others thought I was and who I thought I was. Uncertainty ruled my life.

Hindsight is 20-20. I think what was wrong with me was my attitude. By merely focusing on my vulnerability, I failed to perceive the abundant opportunities around me. I refused to realize that there were so many people who were willing to reach their hands out to me.

Near the end of freshman year, my life started to change. I started to play basketball, talk more and make more friends. I started to find pleasure in singing. As I became more involved in this community, more was offered to me.

Within a few months, everything changed. Life became more enjoyable. I told my parents that I wanted to stay at CFS. Since that day I have never regretted my decision. And it is why I do not want to leave this place. I finally got everything I wanted in my hands, and now I have to let them go. As you embark on a new journey, do not make the same mistake I made. You may feel lost and you may lose sight of what you have been chasing.

You may feel you have no idea what you want to do. Do not let fear obscure your sight. As long as you stay positive, everything will work out for you. You are the only one who can determine your future.”

CLASS OF 2015 POISED FOR IMPACT SIX-YEAR SOLDIERS

CHURCH FARM SCHOOL HAS NEVER BEEN A “TRADITIONAL” East Coast private school. Since its beginning in 1918, the school sought to care for those boys who needed it most; whether sons of single mothers, widows or orphans, they came to Exton, PA, for an experience that would enhance their bodies, minds and spirits. That mission has not changed nearly 100 years later, though we welcome boys from much more varied circumstances and locations.

Our commitment to providing a college preparatory education at a financially accessible price is one of our strongest differentiators, and we are exceedingly proud of the Class of 2015 for being the fifth straight class to be 100% accepted to four-year colleges and universities.

With the addition of Ms. Tiffany Scott (see story on page 4) and a faculty and staff wholly focused on college preparation (126 letters of recommendation were written for our 38 seniors), the Class of 2015 is poised for success beyond CFS. We were especially proud to say goodbye to our “six-year soldiers,” who came to the school as seventh-graders—Mohammed Bappe, Ced Moise, Chae Hun Lim and Ukashah Shabazz.

THE HANKIN GROUP FORGING PHILANTHROPIC IMPACT THE HANKIN GROUP, A FAMILY BUSINESS BASED IN CHESTER County, PA, has made an enormous impact within the community over the past 55 years through its commercial and residential properties, as well as its support of more than 100 nonprofit organizations via its philanthropic arm, The Hankin Foundation. Michael Hankin, chief operating officer, says the Foundation emphasizes building relationships with quality charitable organizations which offer programs that make a difference. Hankin joined the Group in 2011 after attending Virginia Tech University and spending several years working for the Big Four accounting firms in Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

“My family has always been familiar with CFS as an all boys’ school in Chester County. However, it was not until I met Ned [Sherrill] and Peter [Corrado] about three years ago that I learned about the mission of CFS and the amazing good it does for young boys.”

The Hankin Group gives to the school through Pennsylvania’s Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program. The OSTC program—and its companion, the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program—allow businesses that pay PA taxes to support tuition-assistance efforts at schools such as CFS, while realizing significant tax advantages.

The Hankin Group also participates in the school’s Griffin Scholars Program, which provides scholarships to particular students in need. The Program enables participants to come to the school for formal luncheons with their sponsored students. “Every time I visit CFS I am truly amazed and inspired by the students,” Hankin says. “They are so motivated, ambitious and mature for their age. I am always blown away by the graduation rate and college acceptance rate at the school. For those who are not familiar with CFS, I highly recommend taking a tour, meeting with the teachers and staff and most importantly having a chat with the students!”

The Hankin Group is one of the county’s most notable philanthropic organizations, and Hankin attributes much of that to its CEO, Bob Hankin, who travels each year to Africa, India and other areas in need in support of Engineers Without Borders, in addition to the great work they do at home. The Group’s most recent construction project is Meridian at Eagleview, a luxury 55-and-older community opening in the fall of 2016. MARTHA SOUTHWICK PERPETUATING THE IMPACT YOU COULD SAY MARTHA SOUTHWICK MARRIED INTO AFFECTION for Church Farm School. Her late husband, C. David Southwick ’54, “owed everything he became to the Farm School,” she says. Their four children—Mark, Keith, Dara and Paul—grew up immersed in CFS lore and frequently visited the Exton campus from their homes in Maryland, then New Jersey. “We’d drive up almost every weekend to visit the barn cats, walk around, see the Pageant. We wouldn’t even tell anyone we were coming half of the time,” Mrs. Southwick laughs. “David always seemed to find peace there.” When Mr. Southwick passed away two years ago, the Southwick family’s generosity toward the school did not wane. Mrs. Southwick became a Griffin Scholars Program sponsor and has driven from her home in Indiana twice in 2014-2015 alone to become better acquainted with her sponsored student, James Cromartie ’19 of Philadelphia.

Mrs. Southwick was born in Long Island, but spent 16 years in Philadelphia, where her father was a teacher at Temple University. Some of her fondest memories are visiting Gimbels on 8th and Market, where “you could purchase lipstick designed to complement your complexion for $3.12!” Mr. Southwick’s upbringing in Burlington, NJ, was less idyllic. When his mother decided she wanted to be a traveling magician, her son was often left alone and began to get into trouble. “They thought Church Farm School might be the answer. The Colonel (The Rev. Dr. Charles Shreiner) didn’t think he’d make it, but he proved him wrong. David always said he owes all of his successes to the school and the Colonel.”

Mr. Southwick attended CFS from the age of 12-18, heading up the Milk Squad and serving as a crucifer for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church next door. He then went on to Rutgers University, where he met his wife through some fraternity friends. Out of college, he worked as the director of the YMCA in Baltimore (see story on page 3), before moving the family to New Jersey to work for CBS’ Human Resources Department and then eventually to a 10-acre Victorian farmhouse in Indiana in 1972, where Mrs. Southwick still resides. A registered nurse, she stays busy with her nine grandchildren, keeping up the property, weaving blankets and volunteerism. She transports shelter animals to the University of Illinois Veterinary School for free surgeries twice each week, plus provides volunteer hospice services, too. And whenever she can, Mrs. Southwick makes the trek to Church Farm School, just as she has for decades.

WITH CHURCH FARM SCHOOL’S ESTEEMED CHOIR SCHEDULED to perform Marcus Durufle’s Requiem at Carnegie Hall on April 18, 2016, we set the stage (literally and figuratively) for the event with the second annual Church Farm School Gala, Broadway Bound. More than 200 friends of the school gathered at the Wayne Art Center on May 1 to indulge in delightful food and conversation, and hear Broadway-themed performances by the CFS Choir and CFS Singers, as well as our very special guests, The Tonics. Founded by Jim Buck, the Main Line men’s a cappella group performed their unique mixture of contemporary and classic songs, before joining with the choir for a stirring rendition of Can You Hear the People Sing from Les Miserables.

After the program, we held a live auction which garnered an additional $65,000 for Church Farm School’s mission (including a generous $25,000 match from the 25th Century Foundation), bringing the gross sum raised to more than $200,000—all to benefit the school!

Peggy and Cecil Hengeveld ’64 Honored for Ambassadorship Cecil Hengeveld has had a prolific career since graduating from Church Farm School in 1964 but his interest in and activism for the school has never waned.

In fact, since his retirement following 33 years of service in the aviation branch of the Army and eight years with the PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, he has been busier than ever. Along with General Eric Weller, Mr. Hengeveld and his wife, Peggy (also a retired PA Brigadier General) started the Church Farm School Military Scholarship Fund. The Fund aims to financially support CFS students with parents or caregivers who are veterans or who are actively serving in the military. For this, and for their many contributions to the school, the Hengevelds were honored in spring 2015 with the J. Tyler Griffin Award for Ambassadorship.

The award is given annually to an individual or group who tirelessly works as ambassadors on behalf of Church Farm School. Mr. Hengeveld has served as co-chair for CFS’ annual Golf Classic and on the 2015 Gala Committee with Mrs. Hengeveld. They have also supported CFS students through the Griffin Scholars Program. EARL B. WILKINS SCHOLARSHIP FUND IMPACTING NEW ALUMNI THE CFS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CREATED THE EARL B. WILKINS Alumni Scholarship Award 40 years ago in honor of former student (Class of 1926), teacher, principal and athletic director/coach Earl Wilkins. The award is a $1,000 monetary scholarship given annually at Commencement to a graduating senior to offset some expenses at the college of his choice. Recipients are chosen based on demonstrated dedication and effort in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities—just as Wilkins did in his lifetime.

We are pleased to announce that our goal of raising $20,000 to endow the fund was reached in time for Commencement for the Class of 2015! The $1,000 award was presented to Awes Choudary ’15, who will be using the funds toward his education at Rutgers University!

DICK GHERST EXTENDING THE IMPACT CFS HAS RELIED UPON THE COMMUNITY’S GENEROSITY WITH their time, talent and treasure since our founding in 1918. We have been especially fortunate to find a vast number of individuals willing and able to give all three. One such person is CFS Treasurer Richard H. “Dick” Gherst, who has been involved with the school as an officer and board member since 2006, helping steer initiatives such as the Head of School transition, development of the strategic plan and soon, the implementation of the campus master plan.

Gherst, who grew up in the area and graduated from Phoenixville High School, knew of CFS as a teenager, but, like so many others, was mistaken about its true purpose. “I thought it was a reform school. Fast forward 50 years, and I came to know the real and extraordinary mission of the school.”

Related through marriage to CFS director John Pickering and having a common bond with him professionally, too, (Gherst is a CPA and a retired partner of Pricewaterhouse Coopers) the two would often catch up over coffee when they both worked in New York City. When he returned to the area in 2006 (he retired in 1999), Gherst was asked by Pickering to consider joining the CFS board. “I already had a bias in that direction,” Gherst says, referring to his service on the Leadership Council of his alma mater, Franklin & Marshall College, “and I really liked the CFS story. Of all the things to which you can direct your experience and philanthropy, education makes a lot of sense.”

retired. You need something to keep your body active and your mind challenged. Serving with my fellow board members has given me the opportunity to make a real impact.”

Gherst is particularly impressed not just by the school’s mission, but by its results. “When Princeton is the choice of the number 2 graduate,” he laughs, referring to the Class of 2015’s stellar acceptances (see story page 8), “you’re doing something right.”

Besides supporting the school through the Annual Fund and sponsoring special events such as the Gala and Golf Classic, Gherst and his wife, Eleanor, also participate in the Griffin Scholars Program. More recently, they joined the Shreiner Society, named for those who have made plans for the school in their wills. “When you reach 70 ½ years old,” Gherst says, “you all of the sudden start focusing on your retirement accounts. When that money comes to you or your heirs, it will be taxable. The best thing to do is make charitable bequests out of that money.”
