CHW TODAY:
Inspiration, Engagement, Empowerment
This past January, I arrived at Hadassim for a series of meetings. As I listened to the discussion about the French Na’aleh program, I began thinking about how much I wanted to meet these brave teenagers from France, who left their families and homes after facing daily antiSemitism to start a new life in Israel, at Hadassim. After being introduced to the teacher, I walked into the class and was met by a shuffle as each student rose from their chair. I saw beautiful faces shyly looking back at me from their desks. I introduced myself. One dark haired boy with glasses stepped forward and told us how grateful they all were for having the opportunity to start a new life away from the problems they faced in France. Pride washed over me as he expressed gratitude on behalf of his peers that we care so deeply about them. I returned to Hadassim in April with our CHW Mission, “Learn, Love, Live, Israel: The CHW Way!” We met with the French Na’aleh students in their dormitory, which was recently renovated thanks to Marilyn Libin and her family. I will never forget the looks on the students’ faces when I introduced Marilyn: they became excited, gathering around her to express their appreciation and to pose for pictures. My strongest memory from this interaction was when a mission member asked if any of the students had experienced anti-Semitism in France. The teens looked to each other, taking their time to explain, “well not really, but we did have to be careful where we went. We made sure we didn’t wear a Star of David.” Our group was confused by their calmness, their situations
National President
CLAUDIA GOLDMAN unfathomable to many. One boy exclaimed, “as soon as I got off the plane in Israel, I put my Star of David necklace on and haven’t taken it off !” My sense of purpose as to why I volunteer for CHW is abundantly clear. We are in a partnership with French families who have entrusted their children to CHW Hadassim to start a new chapter with hope and possibilities. We are in a partnership with all of the teachers, councillors, social workers, administrators and staff of Hadassim, who need our support. Most importantly, the students have become partners in our pursuit of improving life in our Jewish homeland. They need us, and I know that seeing them develop into proud young people fills my heart and reminds me how much we also need them. Hadassim is Home sincerely articulates the accomplishments of our youth village. For 98 years and counting, CHW provides care, hope, and often homes, for thousands of Israelis. We have so much to be proud of! With love, Claudia Goldman

ABOUT
Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) is Canada’s leading Jewish women’s philanthropic organization. Founded in 1917, CHW is non-political, volunteer driven and funds a multitude of projects for Children, Healthcare, and Women in Israel and Canada.
CHW Projects: Helping Children, Improving Healthcare, Supporting Women
A B C • Providing a safe-haven during the day to a child of working parents. Children receive nutritious hot meals and snacks, ensuring they can focus on learning, playing and growing.
• Creating a secure space for children to hang out and have fun, while their parents are at work. Children enjoy recreational activities with their friends, as well as receive tutoring and a wholesome meal.
• Giving a student the opportunity to prepare for a bright future. CHW schools offer each student a range of educational programs and services designed to meet their specific needs.
• Sending Canadian children to a Jewish summer camp. Open up a world of opportunity as they explore their Jewish roots, make friends, participate in outdoor activities, and discover their hidden talents.
• Providing a home away from home for a child at-risk. Children receive counselling in a stimulating, supportive environment. Help them to discover their own unique gifts and give them the support to flourish. • Helping children discover their Jewish identity. Children participate in Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes, the March of the Living program, or school enrichment excursions and special activities.

letter from the Editor-in-Chief
REDEFINING PHILANTHROPY “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” - Confucius Imagine singing and dancing with your Israeli brothers and sisters at the Kotel, connecting with 4000 years of history, your Jewish identity and Israel; the homeland. Now, imagine holding a CHW toddler in your arms. This toddler is joyous, giggling and full of life, this child is well-fed and cared for; you’ve now seen first-hand what your support of CHW can do, and you’ve seen the lives that you’ve changed. This was CHW’s mission to Israel, “Learn, Love, Live, Israel: The CHW Way!” As each magical moment of this 10 day journey progressed, I began to reflect on the passage of time and the notion of memory. Time is so fleeting, if we’re not paying close enough attention it rushes right past us, the minutes and hours speeding by and taking with them the insignificant, leaving behind memories; memories of moments shared and moments that have touched our lives. The Dalai Lama once said that, “there are only two days in the year in which nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do, and mostly live.” This passage rings true for so much of this mission, and also our lives. After all, “Learn, Love, Live, Israel: The CHW Way!” was a call to action. We asked participants to Learn, by connecting with their past and fully engaging with Israel, and the culture we treasure. We asked participants to Love, to open their hearts at CHW projects and see the power of their love first-hand in the smiles of the happy and healthy children we serve, in the hugs of families reunited after lifesaving surgery, and in the rebuilt lives of women who once saw no future. Finally, we asked participants to Live their best possible life on behalf of those who cannot, and those who have fallen before us to ensure our freedom: and it is OUR freedom. While Israel is many miles away, it is also in our hearts. It is an intrinsic part of who we are. On the third day of this mission, April 22nd, participants journeyed to celebrate Yom Hazikaron, a day of memory for yesterday’s fallen heroes, those selfless individuals whose

ultimate act of heroism in the name of their Israeli brothers and sisters ensures that year after year Jews can gather and celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut; independence. The hope of a tomorrow that is free and peaceful. The proximity of these two dates is no coincidence, it is a reminder of the bearing our yesterdays have on our todays. It is also a reminder of the good that can come from both great and small acts of courage. For what is it to be a hero if not to be selfless, to give open-handedly without want? It is thanks to heroes of our past that we can celebrate independence, it is thanks to medical heroes, like the doctors at Hadassah Hospital, that we are able to save lives. It is thanks to our mission participants, these 24 selfless individuals, who made this trip truly unforgettable, and it is thanks to everyday heroes like yourselves—members, friends, and supporters—that we can care for children, ensure access to healthcare, and rebuild women’s lives in Israel. For nearly 100 years, CHW has been a vehicle of change in Israel and Canada, and this is why the Mission is so deeply moving. It provides the opportunity to connect with our past and our present, and to envision a brighter future for ourselves and for those we serve. It is with great pleasure that I announce the CHW Centennial Mission, co-chaired by Marla and Aubrey Dan taking place October 2017. Learn more about the Centennial Mission on page 11.

There is nothing more pleasing to me than to praise your Annual Campaign which supports The Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute. The impact of this Center of Excellence on the management of stroke patients, both hemorrhagic and occlusive, is overwhelming. The community is only now recognizing the impact Jewish summer camps have on our youth. However, CHW and CYJ have been committed to Jewish summer camps for close to seven decades. ‘what is our secret?’ I think of our versatility, and our adaptability. We have always adapted ourselves to those who need us – from our earliest days, until today.
WORLD WIZO EXECUTIVE:
Chairperson Professor Rivka Lazovsky We are now celebrating the 95th anniversary of the founding of WIZO. It is a time for us to look back in pride at all that we have accomplished, and to look forward with optimism to what the future holds in store. When I ask myself,
Since the two youth villages that you sponsor, CHW Nahalal, and CHW Hadassim were founded, long before the establishment of the State of Israel, they were involved in preparing young immigrants for life in the Jewish settlement that was growing in Palestine. Throughout the history of both youth villages, every language has been spoken, as waves of immigrations have arrived at our WIZO gates – Holocaust survivors, immigrants from Arab lands who were expelled, immigrants from the Former Soviet Union, from Ethiopia, and others from a variety of backgrounds.
families; an emergency centre for small children removed from their parental homes until a permanent solution is found, and a Therapeutic Center for struggling students. Current affairs have led to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Hadassim absorbing youth from France and providing them with tranquility, and all they need to integrate and succeed as Israeli citizens. Your achievements are truly amazing, but together we still have a lot to do.
Today, the latest language that is resounding in CHW Hadassim and CHW Nahalal is: ‘parlez vous francais?’ French. As waves of immigrants arrive from France – a country where they are feeling threatened – to Israel, a country where they are completely at home as Jews. High caliber learning programs have been adapted to their needs, and within a short space of time they feel as if they have integrated into their new way of life. It is thanks to your loving support that each one of your youth villages has been able to cater to every need of these immigrant pupils. We see every one of our pupils as a principle resource for a successful society in Israel. Happy Birthday WIZO!

Hadassim is HOME
YOU CAN HELP WRITE NEW ENDINGS TO THESE TRAGIC STORIES Marcel De Grijs / Dreamstime.com
On Friday, May 15th 2015, a Jewish teenager was leaving his home in Paris when he was attacked by four young men. He was harassed for wearing his kippah, and subsequently beaten. During the attack, the assailants used the teen’s own cellphone as a weapon, smashing it into his eye, leaving him with permanent partial vision loss. The attack was unprovoked, it was malicious, and it was a blatant case of anti-Semitism. As evidenced by this case in Paris, Jewish people around the world, particularly youths, still face dangerous, rampant, and even violent anti-semitism. In many parts of the world, Jewish youth fear going about their daily routines; going to the synagogue, community centre, and even school, have become risky endeavors. The concern grows for these Jewish teenagers, as it is incredibly difficult to imagine what it must be like to fear for your life in a place that you call home: somewhere you should feel safest.
[ 15 ] Summer 2015 ORAH Magazine
Because of the French Na’aleh program at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village, this is not where these stories have to end. Na’aleh at CHW Hadassim provides a safe haven for Francophone youth from countries across Europe who are suffering from rising Anti-Semitism. Education must remain a priority, especially in these pivotal developmental years. CHW understands that safety of students should not be negotiated in order for them to pursue education. At CHW Hadassim there is no trade-off. Education should be a right, not a privilege.
Na’aleh at CHW Hadassim is more than a school; while it is a place of learning, it is also a home and a community. ‘Hadassim is Home’ rings true to the majority of teenagers who live there. Many discuss the difficulties they had in their home countries with making friends and fitting in. The majority of the issues they faced stemmed from their Jewishness: something they wanted to be proud of, but instead was used as a tool against them. Hadassim offers an opportunity for these teenagers to have a fresh start, embrace their Jewishness, and form new, long-lasting relationships. No longer do they need to leave their homes in fear. Schools, community centres, synagogues, are no longer places that instil fear. They are once again places where Jewish youth can feel comfortable; places where they can feel at home. In order to accommodate the students at CHW Hadassim, several new classrooms were built and dormitories were renovated through the generosity of CHW donors like yourself. However, our work is not done. We expect 20 additional students for the upcoming year, and by 2016 we anticipate the siblings of many of our current students to join the program. CHW Hadassim gives teenagers freedom. Freedom to be Jewish. Freedom to learn. Freedom to live. CHW Hadassim gives teenagers a home again.
About CHW Hadassim School and Youth Village The Hadassim Children and Youth Village was founded in 1947 for European Jewish refugee children. Hadassim is one of the largest residential schools in Israel. Today, Hadassim serves both immigrant and Israeli children from disadvantaged families. CHW Hadassim is a happy place even though many of the children placed there are in desperate need of support and attention. Some of the children have suffered traumas that no child should ever be exposed to, having experienced emotional, sexual or physical abuse. Through the intervention of social services, these children are brought to CHW Hadassim where they find refuge and a home. The unwavering support of CHW members and friends ensures that children leaving Hadassim are equipped with the skills for a successful life.
Na’aleh Program
Learn more about the French Na’aleh program, visit: www.chw.ca/HadassimisHOME
Hadassim is also home to the French Na’aleh program, an opportunity for Francophone youth to continue their education in their native language. The Na’aleh program has become increasingly important due to the rise of anti-Semitism, causing many European teenagers to seek out safety and security. ORAH Magazine Summer 2015 [ 16 ]
Children: CARE
children: CHW Gives Care
“in Paris, I always felt tension in the air because I was Jewish. I never felt completely safe.” Gad was born and raised in Paris, France, however, to him, it never really felt like home. Gad explains, “life in Paris was never easy for me, at home, school, or in the community.” An only child, Gad struggled at home, especially with his parents’ divorce. He had difficulty at school, both with making friends and comprehending the course materials. In the community, he was never included in social activities, and always felt like the outcast. Gad says that his negative experiences in France could ultimately be attributed to one thing: being Jewish.
Children: CARE Gad knew that he wanted a better life for himself, and a chance to escape from the daily challenges he faced due to anti-Semitism.
Living in France, Gad felt that he had no potential to succeed; that he could never imagine his future because he constantly felt discouraged.
The Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) supported French Na’aleh Program receives Francophone youth from countries such as France, Switzerland and Morocco. The children, who enter the program at the age of 14, are provided with a secure environment in which to study, so that they can plan for a brighter future.
Gad is telling a very different story today. He is already preparing to do his army service and to serve his country. His dream is to create a life and future
A parent’s decision to send their child to Israel can be explained in one word: security. With anti-Semitism on the rise in Europe, many parents feel that although it is a difficult choice, sending their child is necessary. In order to accommodate the students at CHW Hadassim, new classrooms have been built through the generosity of CHW donors, like you. These classrooms allow for the immersion of additional students in years to come, ensuring that no child in need is turned away. When Gad arrived at CHW Hadassim all he had was hope; hope that this would be the change in his life that he so desperately needed, hope that he finally found a place he could happily call home. Gad shares, “in Paris, I always felt tension in the air because I was Jewish. I never felt completely safe. Then, I came to CHW Hadassim and right away, I felt a sense of security. Israel is the place for the Jewish people, it exists for people like me who need to seek refuge. It saved me.” “One of the biggest changes that I have experienced since coming to CHW Hadassim is in school. In France, my peers and teachers were never nice to me. I didn’t do well because I struggled with the materials, I felt stupid. At CHW Hadassim, the teachers ensured that I was receiving the necessary support, both during and after school hours. I discovered that I am smart. For the first time in my life I feel confident, proud of myself, and I believe I can flourish.”
Gad says that since arriving at CHW Hadassim, his life has completely changed. For the first time, he has a group of friends that accept him for who he is. He is always included and feels a sense of belonging. for himself in Israel, where he can raise children and have a family of his own. Gad also loves music, and expressed his desire to one day become a singer. Most importantly, Gad’s ultimate dream is “to always have happiness in life.”

An Israeli rescue worker navigates the scene of a terror attack at the Har Nof Synagogue in Jerusalem.
In the Darkest Hour CHW Gives Hope On November 18, 2014, Eitan left his home in Jerusalem and made his way to shul, as he did most mornings. This morning, however, would change the course of Eitan’s life. Two men rushed into the synagogue with knives and a gun during morning prayers, and began attacking everyone inside; Eitan was left fighting for his life. Four men were brutally killed that morning marking one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jerusalem in recent history.
After fighting for his life at Hadassah Hospital following the Har Nof Synagogue attack, Eitan Mualmi returned to the synagogue this April, walking and in full health, for the first time since the attack. Just eight months earlier Eitan was rushed to Hadassah Hospital clinging to life. The medical staff were certain his name would be added to the list of fatalities within

hours; his injuries were too severe, he would not survive. However, they were determined to save his life. Eitan underwent surgery after surgery during his five month stay at Hadassah, during one of which the doctor successfully saved the arm that was nearly amputated in the attack.

Healthcare: HOPE Eitan spent many weeks at Hadassah’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He shares, “the doctors and nurses at Hadassah Hospital were amazing, everything they did was with so much care and compassion.” It has been eight months since the attack, and Eitan is on the track to recovery, attending rehabilitation sessions at Hadassah three times per week. Though he requires use of a cane to walk, what matters is that he is back on his feet.

Hadassah patients will have peace of mind knowing they are receiving excellent healthcare in a safe environment. It is evident that the lower level was designed specifically with patients and their families in mind. Hadassah doctor Ofer Gofrit notes, “we at Hadassah want to provide a sense of security and confidence in each of our patients and their families; a facility of this nature does exactly that.” Today, Eitan is walking on both feet, and his heart is filled with gratitude.
”
Hadassah Hospital also provided Eitan and his family with referrals to psychologists and social workers, in order to assist them in coping with the traumatic events that led to his hospitalization. David, one of Eitan’s sons, expresses, “Hadassah’s support greatly helped my father and my family to soften the blow. The hospital took us under their wing in our time of need.” Eitan says, “the fine people of Hadassah Hospital saved my life. I love Hadassah; it also is very easy, as one of my daughters is named Hadassah.”

The exceptional patient care provided at Hadassah is integral to its reputation as one of the top medical facilities in the world. In the ongoing efforts to ensure that patients receive the best healthcare possible, Hadassah Hospital, with the support of CHW, has embarked on establishing a lower level operating department that will house state-ofthe-art operating rooms. Eitan, above, has recovered fully and is grateful to Hadassah for the second chance at life.

CHW Gives Worth “This course was so significant in getting my life back on track. The course empowered me and gave me a lifeline.” At the age of 42, Segal was let go from her job at a newspaper production factory where she worked on an assembly line. Having never completed her high school degree, Segal was lost and scared. She feared for her family’s well-being, as she knew that her income was critical to their survival. Segal turned to the Unlimited Potential Program when she had nowhere to go and was in desperate need of help. Segal’s story is one of perseverance and determination.
Women: WORTH
Segal arrived at the Unlimited Potential Program through a government referral program. In February of this past year, she completed the course. The Unlimited Potential Program provided Segal with tools that were relevant in today’s workforce. For the first time, Segal was learning valuable office skills, like how to operate programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. She also learned important job searching techniques, like how to write a stand-out resume. Segal enrolled in a special workshop designed to provide support and instill useful tools for starting a new job. The workshop focused on adapting to a new work environment and adjusting to the changes that come with a new position. Through the Unlimited Potential Program, Segal received a great deal of support. The instructors ensured that she understood the materials, and that she felt comfortable with the abundance of new information. The social workers spoke with Segal and listened to her concerns about entering a new workforce. Segal shares, “this program was a shoulder of support in my time of need. I was given strength and confidence thanks to this program.” The Unlimited Potential Program and the staff gave her the support and care that she needed to feel self-assured.
Segal turned to the Unlimited Potential program to change her life.
After Segal completed the Unlimited Potential Program in February, she went on interviews at various companies. She was confident in her capabilities and wanted to see herself reach her potential. When asked about her interview experiences she says, “I was proud of myself in the interviews. I felt that I had a lot to offer. I introduced myself with confidence and was not afraid. I know that I have an amazing toolbox and this is because of the Unlimited Potential Program. Thank you!” After a series of interviews, Segal was hired as an office manager.
“
Today, I see my family is happy and enjoying life without stress. I am able to feel proud for the first time in my life. My dream is to keep feeling this way so that my children will benefit from my change.
”
Since Segal has been working again, she has been happier than ever. She enjoys her work, the atmosphere, and working in an office environment where she has made new friends. Segal’s happiness at work has translated to her home life. She now comes home eager to share stories about her day and her accomplishments. “This course was so significant in getting my life back on track. The course empowered me and gave me a lifeline,” Segal remarked. She continued, “my dreams have come true. Today, I see my family is happy and enjoying life without stress. I am able to feel proud for the first time in my life. My dream is to keep feeling this way so that my children will benefit from my change.”

Lynn Gillman Why I Became a
Robin Chernick
Sustainer When I was asked to write an article on “Why I Became a Sustainer,” I was thrilled, as the answer is quite simple: why not? 2014 proved to be a difficult year of great loss for me; I lost both of my parents and my good friend Howard Grant. I had been thinking of becoming a Sustainer for two years, and after these tragedies I realized that life is short and I had no time to waste. I wanted to find a way to honour the memories of my parents and Howard that exemplified their lives, as they were all committed to their communities, to Israel, and to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW). Since I was young, CHW has been a part of my life. All three of my grandmothers and my mom were active members of CHW in Montreal and in Sherbrooke. I needed to find a meaningful way to connect to CHW’s projects in Israel and to find a way of remembrance. In March, as I travelled to Montreal to attend my first National Leaders Forum, I made my final decision. As the train zipped by the countryside, I realized that
making 10 monthly payments of $100 would be easy for me. It is about the same amount of money I spend each month at Starbucks. Certainly my commitment to our projects is stronger than my commitment to the coffers of Starbucks! Now looking back, I wonder why it took me so long to decide.
“
I needed to find a meaningful way to connect to CHW’s projects in Israel and to find a way of remembrance.

CHW Vancouver President
Stephanie Rusen
In Conversation CHW Vancouver President, Stephanie Rusen, is a Québec native who has lived all over our beautiful nation: from Québec, to New Brunswick, to Ontario, Alberta, and now British Columbia. Along with her husband Danny, she has two children, Joe and Jenya. Having been involved with CHW for almost 30 years, Stephanie has been on the Vancouver Council, and acted as Centre Treasurer. Stephanie is also a CHW Life Member.
How did you first get involved with CHW? My first introduction to CHW was about 29 years ago when I used to volunteer at the Bazaar in Calgary. When I moved to Vancouver 28 years ago I continued to volunteer some of my time at the Bazaar there as well. I started just working for the day, which led to helping with setup, and it gradually just grew into more and more responsibility once I became a member. I am also very good friends with Claudia Goldman, so about nine
years ago she came over before a CHW meeting she was on her way to, and once she realized I had nothing to do that evening she promptly dragged me to the meeting. Sitting with the women that night I found myself at home. I had such an excellent time that I became a Life Member that same evening.
What do you find most challenging about being a Centre President? The most challenging part has to be understanding the scope of the job, and all the depths and details that go into it. It’s something you don’t realize until you are in the role. Even though I was on Council for four years, you’re still not aware of how much the President does. I like to use the analogy of a duck. Above water it appears full of grace, poise, and beauty, but below the surface the feet are peddling like mad.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about getting involved with their local Centre? I get very excited when I talk about CHW. We’re an organization of volunteers and just a handful of paid staff, and we raise a lot of money. There are so many organizations out there with paid staff to raise money, and that’s their job. This isn’t our job.
We do it out of passion, excitement, and a desire to help. With CHW you’re not just giving to a charity, you’re changing lives. A lot of the children we help come from nothing, we are giving them a life. Shifting their perspective from despair to hope. When you speak about a cause with so much passion and enthusiasm it makes people want to get involved.
What exciting initiatives are underway at the Vancouver Centre? An exciting initiative that we started this past year is called ‘Meducation’ This is an event run city-wide, as opposed to chapter-wide. During our ‘Meducation’ lectures we get experts to come in and discuss various health topics relevant to our members. At our last meeting we had Dr. Gidon Perlman from Hadassah Hospital, who is currently in Vancouver on a two year fellowship with one of the leading pioneers in heart valve replacement surgery. So, to have Dr. Perlman come in and speak at our event was definitely interesting for everyone. What’s also very exciting is that he has agreed to participate in more ‘Meducation’ lectures in the future.
What would someone be surprised to know about CHW Vancouver? I think a lot of people would be surprised to know that Vancouver has provided CHW with four National Presidents: Naomi Frankenberg, Judy Mandleman, Rochelle Levinson, and now Claudia Goldman.

Woman of Valour L au r e n B e ll
Born in Winnipeg and raised in Calgary, Lauren, together with her husband Sam, married daughters, and granddaughter, are a close-knit family. “Israel, by extension, is family. Even though distances preclude what families would normally do together, we still need to support each other, says Lauren. These intimate connections with CHW and Israel are what inspired her to become a Woman of Valour.
Woman of Valour
Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) has long been a part of Lauren Bell’s life. Coming from a family that has supported CHW for four generations, Lauren’s commitment to CHW might as well be in her DNA. Lauren’s first involvement with CHW occurred when she was invited to bring her creativity to the organization in an active way. This positive experience exposed her to the benefits of CHW projects, a dynamic group of like-minded women, and the satisfaction of community “participaction”. Her introductory commitment to CHW intensified as she assumed more responsibility for Calgary Centre expanding her role from a local to a national leadership level. “It was motivating to continue what I was doing, and what I was learning. I wanted to explore the potential of what we could do to bring the value of the organization into the community in a broader way. It was a fun time, we weren’t only fundraising, but rather, fun raising,” shares Lauren. Presently, Lauren is a member of the CHW Board of Directors and The National Leaders Forum. She is a CHW Woman of Valour, Sustainer, and a Woman of Distinction donor. Gifting, specific or otherwise, is a privilege she and Sam share. Together they recognize cumulative giving as a worthy measure of loyalty. Becoming a Woman of Valour is just one more way Lauren has given back to CHW and Israel, and giving back is a crucial part of sustaining our projects. Lauren explains: “I think that is ensures continued financial support even when resources may waver, or be redirected at the governments discretion. Our continuity assures professional stability for Israel’s finest teachers, doctors, and professionals; and acts as a pillar of strength financially, psychologically, and emotionally.” “We’re saying to Israel that you’re not alone, we are one, and we are family.”
Lauren’s drive to become a Woman of Valour came down to her lifelong commitment to CHW. “It was a combination of the work over the past number of years, and the incredible inspiration and motivation received working with so many dynamic, exciting, intelligent, and responsible individuals,” shares Lauren. That reasoning, along with her strong desire to support Israel, made giving the gift associated with becoming a Woman of Valour an easy decision.
“
We’re saying to Israel that you’re not alone, we are one, and we are family.
”
Supporting Jews around the globe is an important aspect of why Lauren gives, “Israel is the bedrock for Jews and the Diaspora, and without it Jewish lives in particular would change dramatically” She continues, “through our Woman of Valour donation we can contribute to the lives of disadvantaged children by giving them hope and opportunity. We know they will be sheltered and taught at comparable standards to what we would want for our children.” For Lauren and her family, it’s about being supportive, and being able to do whatever they can to help; whether through volunteering or philanthropy. Lauren has been to Israel on a few occasions, and she looks forward to going back soon: “we’ve made sure that our children have been there and their spouses have been there. We’re expanding the opportunity for our family as well, so they too have an understanding of what we’ve been trying to imprint all these years.” Lauren also has visited many CHW projects including Calgary Bat-Yam Women’s Centre, Hadassim Children and Youth Village,

Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, and Hadassah Hospital. “Visiting our projects has left a very strong imprint; it reinforced what I felt, and magnified it significantly,” says Lauren.
“

”
When asked if any one CHW project is special to her, Lauren jokes, “I’m conflicted, don’t ask me to pick one child.” Each project resonates uniquely with her and Sam, “when we make donations that haven’t been specifically directed we do so because we really believe that the value gained far exceeds the dollars donated (return on

investment), and if we are able to contribute in whatever way we can, we are benefitting on such a broad base.” It is not only children that are benefitting from donations, but also their parents and families. Lauren continues, “they are all favourites, because they all reach high standards to support what we, the Board of Directors, have agreed upon as our critical mandates at the time for each individual initiative. We are educating, healing and providing opportunity for the future of Israeli society.” When asked what she has received from giving to CHW, Lauren speaks of a sense of satisfaction from helping others, and her capacity to act as an agent of change through leadership and mentorship. “As a Woman of Valour I am very grateful to be able to support the impact of CHW in Canada, and Israel. It’s clear that through our link to this strong and enduring organization I have joined with others around the globe, we are furthering the health and welfare of Israel and her people.”
Woman of Distinction
Chapter Treasurer, Centre Treasurer, and for good measure, National Treasurer. While it could be a line straight out of Dr. Seuss’ One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, it’s actually Elayna Latsky’s impressive resumé with CHW.
Elayna Latsky Woman of Distinction
Woman of Distinction Elayna Latsky, CHW’s current National Treasurer, has also held many other prominent titles including: Member of National Leaders Forum, National Board of Directors, Toronto Centre Board Member, Chapter President, Toronto Centre President, and fulltime mother of four boys. She now has one more role to add to her already distinguished list: CHW Woman of Distinction. Elayna was first introduced to CHW in 1997, a few years after she moved to Toronto. Invited to a Tamid Chapter meeting by some friends, Elayna had such an excellent time, that she joined the chapter and never looked back. “I had an instant connection with the members and the organization. It was such a wonderful group of ladies from all over Canada, I knew it was an organization I wanted to be a part of.” Becoming a Woman of Distinction was done to honour the end of her term as Centre President, stating, “it’s an honour to be able to help our cause of supporting children, healthcare, and women in Israel, not just as a volunteer, but financially as well.” For Elayna, it’s the personal satisfaction that makes giving to CHW such an easy decision. Knowing that her donation is going toward helping so many people at CHW’s projects is an amazing feeling. Whether the funding is for the new Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute, or one of our many daycare centres, she knows that countless people are benefitting – and that is something Elayna can take a lot of pride in.
“We wanted our gift to go towards the Annual Campaign because, as the Treasurer, I know that funds are needed to meet all of our commitments. All of our projects are so important, and impact so many lives, it would be too difficult to just choose one.” Elayna knows the importance of supporting Israel. Israel is the homeland for Jews across the world, hence “It’s an honour to be able to help our it is the duty of cause of supporting children, healthcare, Jews all over the globe to help and women in Israel, not just as support it. “Israel a volunteer, but financially as well.” provides so much, not only for Jews, but for the rest of the world as well. It is the only democracy in the Middle East, and provides leading edge innovation in science and technology,” says Elayna. For example, CHW’s recent commitment to the Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute is a program that will not only benefit the citizens of Israel: the research being conducted will benefit the entire world. Having been to Israel on three separate occasions, Elayna has seen where the problems lie, but has also experienced its sheer beauty. Her first trip, which also happened to be her honeymoon, was spent exploring the countryside as part of a fundraising bike tour. Her second trip was one she’ll never forget, because it was her first time going with CHW, as part of an AVIV Conference. This trip was Elayna’s first opportunity to really experience firsthand all that CHW does. Elayna, and a few other CHW members, visited several CHW projects following the conference.
ORAH Magazine Summer 2015 [ 32 ]
Woman of Distinction
Being a mother of four, Elayna explains how her visit to Hadassim was especially impactful, “to go to the dormitories and see house parents giving their all to take care of their own children, and also other children, who are less fortunate was such an emotional and powerful experience. It was humbling to see a family provide for their own three children, but also another dozen or so children on top of that.” CHW provides so much for so many people not only in Israel, but also throughout the world. “We use our acronym Children, Healthcare, Women, but that’s very general, we do so much more than that,” programs like the Na’aleh Program, which provide teenagers in France suffering from rising anti-Semitism a welcoming environment in Israel. Or, all of the leading edge research that is being conducted at the Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center that benefits so many.
Elayna with her husband, Jonathan Latsky.
Elayna concludes by stating how meaningful becoming a Woman of Distinction has been, “it’s a great feeling being able to make a significant contribution to such an important cause, Israel is our home, and we need to support them through CHW.” “We do so much, it’s hard to be summed up in just Children, Healthcare, and Women.”

CHW Legacy Circle
CHW Legacy Circle:
Miriam Peletz About as deep as her family roots are her roots with CHW, and just as Miriam will have a long lasting legacy with her family, she will also have one with CHW. Her CHW Legacy Circle gift will ensure that her memory, and life-long commitment to supporting Israel and CHW will live on. The Legacy Circle gives Miriam the opportunity to continue to make an impact on the lives of others long after she personally cannot.
The most important thing in Miriam Peletz’ s life is her family. Along with her husband of 65 years, Beryl, Miriam has three daughters, 11 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Her legacy as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother is firmly planted in her family’s roots. About as deep as her family roots are her roots with CHW, and just as Miriam will have a long lasting legacy with her family, she will also have one with CHW. Her CHW Legacy Circle gift will ensure that her memory, and life-long commitment to supporting Israel and CHW will live on. The Legacy Circle gives Miriam the opportunity to continue to make an impact on the lives of others, long after she personally cannot.
also held the role of Financial Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice-President at the National level. For Miriam, joining the CHW Legacy Circle was an easy decision. She was the first Legacy Chairman in Montreal, so joining the Legacy Circle was just a natural progression. Miriam says, “I thought that the Legacy gift was very important, I know that it will provide money for all of CHW’s innovative programs that will make an impact for the future of CHW.” She continues, “CHW does so much wonderful work for children, healthcare and women in Israel, and I want to ensure that it continues long after I’m gone.”
Miriam first got involved with CHW many years ago, when a group of her friends wanted to do something that wouldn’t only be fun socially, but more importantly would be a way to do something positive for Israel. Miriam and her friends joined a chapter in Montreal, and she hasn’t looked back since.
CHW has been a part of Miriam’s life for so long that she cannot single out a particular moment in which she instantly decided to become a member of the Legacy Circle. Miriam explains, “just the idea that I can still help contribute to the success of CHW, and all the programs benefitting Israel after I’m gone is truly a wonderful feeling.” Miriam continues by saying, “I love the concept of The Legacy Circle.”
Over her years as a CHW Member, Miriam has held countless positions at chapter, centre, and national levels. She has held every role at the chapter level, including being President of her chapter for 18 years. She has also held every executive role at the Montreal Centre, including President from 1980-82, and has
When asked about the future of her philanthropy, which already has a very impressive history, Miriam says, “I just want to carry on the great work the organization is doing, and it has been an honour to have been able to be a part of CHW for as long as I have.” She also brought up the idea that not knowing

what the younger generation is prepared to do in regard to philanthropic work could potentially be a concern, and is an important reason to leave a bequest to CHW. For others who are thinking about becoming a Legacy Circle member, Miriam would certainly encourage them to do so: “it’s a wonderful feeling to know that you are doing something that you know will carry on after you’re gone.” It isn’t always about the total dollar amount, but the generosity that it inspires, and the legacy you can leave behind. Miriam says, “it doesn’t mean that you have to give a large amount, if everybody would give a little it would

ensure the future of the organization will remain strong and prosperous.” The Legacy Circle Gift is one that keeps on giving. Having been to Israel over 20 times, Miriam is well aware just how important giving back to our homeland is. Being is the home for Jews all over the world, it is necessary that we give back and support Israel when we can. The Legacy Circle Gift allows you to leave a lasting legacy, all while providing support for Israel.

Why Israel Needs Our Help
Why israel needs our help
By Alina Ianson*
There has always been a strong bond between Israel and the Diaspora. Together, we bear the responsibility for Jewish survival and the Jewish homeland.
When we invest in Israel’s strengths, we ensure that our homeland is a secure, democratic, and thriving society that will continue to succeed.
While being a nation with great drive and determination, Israel is also a nation that faces many hurdles.
Whether we connect to Israel in need, or in deed, Israel needs our help.
When we invest in the challenges Israel faces, we ensure progress and development.
*based on the Presidents and Professional Forum Workshop on March 29, 2015
homeland Israel is the homeland for the Jewish people. By choice or by need, Israel has been there for millions of Jews who have sought refuge.
democracy Israel is the nation setting the standard for security of rights for women and children in the Middle East, and acts as a beacon of democracy in the region.
development Israel’s defence needs prevent the government from being able to adequately support social issues like poverty, child care, and women’s issues. Israelis live with the constant threat of war. The programs that we provide, like Resilience Training, and safe-havens for children and women are essential.
infrastructure With an increase in antiSemitism worldwide, Israel has seen a significant rise in immigration, as people seek safety and security. This influx creates the need for investment in infrastructure to accomodate new immigrants.
Innovation Israel’s innovations are at the forefront of change and impact around the world. Israel is second only to the US, as the country with the most startups in the world. Israel is also ranked #2 for venture capital funds. We take pride in these achievements, and want to help continue to foster these positive developments.
To be Jewish, is to be family. When we help Israel we are helping ourselves.

CHW Toronto Mentee:
Jodi Schechter What are the most important skills you learned as a mentee?
In Conversation How did you become involved with CHW? Both my grandmother and mother were involved with CHW, so it was an organization I was always familiar with. When I moved to Toronto it was a great way to meet people and become involved with CHW and the local community. It was about knowing about the organization, and wanting to support it.
What motivated you to become a part of the Mentorship Program? Someone at my chapter recommended that I look into it. I viewed it as an opportunity to learn more about the organization at large, to get the 30,000 foot view of the organization, and explore the notion of doing more beyond the chapter level. I had already held a lot of roles at the chapter level, so this was an opportunity to do more.
[ 39 ] Summer 2015 ORAH Magazine
I think scale would be the best way to describe it. I’m a big ideas person, and was paired with a wonderful mentor; she was a perfect counterbalance to the kind of things I wanted to do. The program involves setting goals for the year, and this creates a framework for your experience, I had some bigger ideas that were aimed outside the chapter level. I learned how to take a big idea, and break it down into achievable chunks. My mentor helped me understand who we go to when trying accomplish these things, which leaders to target, and which committees we need buy in from.
Who has influenced you the most? My mentor, Beverly Kahn, who also happens to have created the mentorship program. We had a great working relationship, and have developed a friendship as well. She was knowledgeable, patient, and such a good counterbalance to my big ideas. There were so many other accomplished, devoted, and dedicated women that were also very influential. It was inspiring to be around so many women who have been around the organization for so long and continue to be extremely devoted to CHW.
What have you gained from the Mentorship Program? I’ve gained an education in terms of the inner workings of the organization; things like governance, budgeting, what percentage of every nickel goes towards marketing expenses, as to what goes to the projects. Then being exposed to other leaders in the organization, it arms you with the confidence to try new things, and gives you all kinds of interesting people to call. So, you get this network of individuals that you can call on, and every one of them has been supportive, helpful, and amazing.
What was one of your goals? One of my goals had to do with the Mentorship Program. So far we haven’t really been keeping tabs on the mentees after they graduate the program, so my personal goal was to create an alumni organization. Every year there are about four to five ladies in the program, and it’s been going on for six years now, so there is a long list of people we should be able to reach out to for future leadership opportunities. The investment has already been made by both sides. We got the list together, got all their contact information, and we hosted the first ever alumni event. We don’t want to lose all the good people that have gone through the program, and this is a perfect way to that.
CHW in Canada Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) is known for the good work that is being done for Children, Healthcare, and Women in Israel. However, CHW also partners with many different organizations in Canada and CHW members in Centres from coast to coast participate in these charitable activities. CHW Memories Project
In October 2013, CHW Ottawa launched the “Memories Project,” a historical look into the foundation that has made their Centre what it is today. The “Memories Project” has inspired this rubric in the CHW Insider, which kicks off the countdown to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO’s centennial in 2017. This edition of the “Memories Project” focuses on Sally Gotlieb z’l, CHW’s fourth National President.
z’l
Sally Gotlieb :
The Woman Who Led Everything The Early Days of Sally Gotlieb Sally was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1900 to Polish immigrants Judah and Rebecca Schiller. In 1912 her family made the move from Philadelphia to Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was in Winnipeg where Sally would discover her lifelong passion for helping others, and supporting her belief in Zionism. Sally’s philanthropic journey began in 1914 when she joined Young Judea. In 1923 she joined the Canadian Hadassah family when she became a member of the Ezra Chapter, serving as secretary, and eventually president. After nearly a decade at the Ezra Chapter, Sally was elected President
[ 43 ] Summer 2015 ORAH Magazine
of the Winnipeg Hadassah Council. In 1934, at the 8th Biennial Conference in Edmonton, she was elected Western Vice-President, a role that she held for 17 years. Sally assumed the post of National Membership Chairman in 1947 with the goal of substantially increasing membership. Just like in many of her other endeavors, Sally was successful. She proposed the adoption of Life Memberships as a policy, and the idea was well received. She was also instrumental in developing and designing the Life Membership Pin as we know it today.
Sally Gotlieb: 4th National President In 1951 Sally Gotlieb became the 4th National President of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW), and in doing so became the first woman outside of Montreal or Ottawa to run a National Jewish organization in Canada. The following four and a half years of her life were exceptionally busy, as she spent two weeks out of every month in Montreal, away from her home and family back in Winnipeg. Sally was one of the hardest working Presidents; in her eyes there was always something more she could do. Early in 1951, she journeyed with her daughter Eunice to Israel.
CHW Memories Project While visiting an agricultural school at Nahalal, she found it to be in a run-down state because of the impacts from the war. She immediately set about working toward its improvement. As a result of Sally’s resiliency, buildings were restored, and new dormitories and a gymnasium were added. Prior to her trip to Israel, Dr. Chaim Weizmannz’l, Israel’s first Prime Minister, had recently passed away. To honour Dr. Weizmann, Sally proposed commemorating him by setting up a biology science laboratory at The Hebrew University. Prefabricated buildings were made to house the laboratories at a temporary site in Jerusalem. Sally was present at the dedication of the first of these temporary buildings. One of Sally’s first major projects as President was assisting The Hebrew University build a new campus on Givat Ram, a few miles outside of Jerusalem. At her instigation, CHW pledged $150,000 towards the establishment of the first permanent building on the new site. This was CANADA HALL, with the adjoining Chaim Weizmann Biology Science Building. Her next project associated with Hebrew University was to establish exchange scholarships between Hebrew University and universities in Canada. Shortly before the end of Sally’s term as National President, she proposed to the Executive that she would pledge $150,000 toward
three years of cancer research at the university. In recognition of her assistance, she was made a member of the university’s Board of Governors, and held this position for eight years. Around 1955, Sally proposed another idea: the establishment of a blood fractionation plant in the Colonel David Marcus Blood Donor Centre in Jaffa. And in similar fashion to all of Sally’s projects, this was done. Later that year Sally approached the Jewish National Fund to honour CHW for its large contributions by building a new village in northern Galilee. This request was also granted, and thus the new settlement of Segev was created. Sally’s multi-faceted interests are reflected in the diversity of CHW’s contributions during the years of her leadership. Her passion and devotion to the cause in Israel, and at home in Canada, are what made her such a powerful and influential leader for Canadian Hadassah-WIZO.
Sally and Youth Aliyah in Canada Sally was instrumental in the formation of Youth Aliyah in Western Canada. In 1934, while attending a Hadassah Convention in St. Louis, she listened to Henrietta Szold speak about the Child Rescue Movement and the plight of the European Jewish community. When she returned to Winnipeg, she organized the first Youth Aliyah
fundraising campaign in the city, and received loyal support and cooperation. In the same year, she created the first Men’s Youth Aliyah Dinner in Winnipeg, which for many years was an annual event. “All our efforts were bent on helping the refugees,” said Sally.
Sally Gotlieb: Family Matters Apart from being a busy philanthropist, Sally was also a caring mother and wife. Sally and her husband Paul D. Gotlieb had two children, Eunice, and Allan. It was also known around town that Sally prepared a mouth-watering roast beef that was second-to-none, and wouldn’t let you leave her house without a full stomach.

e-fundraising:
Success stories from CHW Centres
CHW Walk in the Park is quickly becoming a popular event, now taking place in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver with more Centres soon to come!
CHW Montreal’s
walk in the park
On Sunday, June 14th, CHW members and friends walked along the Cote St. Luc Heart in Motion paths in solidarity with Israel. Following the Anna Zaitchick Chapter’s success hosting a CHW Walk in the Park for three consecutive years, CHW Montreal members and friends were invited to participate in this fabulous event in support of CHW projects in Israel and

Canada. A portion of the proceeds were donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Participants created their own fundraising page (with our userfriendly software), and asked friends and family to sponsor them. Each member set a minimum fundraising goal of $400 for themselves, and most surpassed their goals. One participant raised over $2,500 on her own! The use of the online peer-topeer fundraising tool enhanced the Walk in the Park’s success; it allowed participants to tap into

their social circles with ease, to garner support for CHW’s projects. The e-fundraising solution gave each individual the opportunity to send solicitation emails, thank you letters, and follow their personal, as well as their team’s, fundraising progress. There was a choice to walk 3km, 5km or 8km on the Cote St. Luc Heart in Motion walking paths. On the day of the event, many brought their children, grandchildren, and even their pets, to walk with them. Many thanks to the city of Cote St. Luc for their help with coordinating the walk, as well as for allowing us to use a chalet for the post-walk brunch. CHW Montreal’s Walk in the Park was a huge success, raising over $14,000. CHW calgary Mall in the Hall
Seniors Connection Tea
On Thursday, March 19th,Tikvah Chapter held its first Mall in the Hall at the Calgary Jewish Academy. We had several goals which we wanted to achieve. First, we wanted to reach out to the community and be involved with the school and parents. Second, we wanted to raise funds for our projects in Israel. Third, we wanted to connect with various small business women to help them raise awareness of their enterprises and to raise funds for CHW and CJA. Fourth, we wanted to give to the school’s project to upgrade their security system. Last, but certainly not least we all wanted to have FUN. We think that we succeeded in all of our goals: evidence is in the pictures and presentation of cheques, as we raised over $1,000. Thank you to our volunteers, Edith Dimant, Reesa Girvitz, Lily Fixler, Sandra Eisner, Louise Glin, Esther Ptashny, who helped with setting up, selling the raffle tickets and dismantling.
On May 6, 2015, CHW hosted the annual Seniors Connection Tea. This year it was held at Maison senior living residence. Trudy Baker, our Maison host in charge of community relations, could not have been more welcoming! We were provided with their lovely dining room, coffee, tea, and staff to help clean up. The ladies were entertained by Cheque presentation: CJA representation the talented Akiva boys’ choir, who with Marcie McQueen and Gail Ksienski. sang beautifully. All the women had a great visit with friends and we were able to give everyone a goodie bag of pastries to take home. This tea is held every year to honor our senior members, the backbone of our Jewish community. These ladies volunteered their time, energy and funds to CHW for many years. It is a small, but meaningful way in which we can show our gratitude to them for strengthening our local Jewish community and supporting Aviva Cheuk and Lauren Bell. worthwhile causes here and in Israel. We wish to thank the many volunteers who baked, set up and served for this event. It wouldn’t have been a success without your support.
President Installation Lots of fun, social and food were enjoyed by members and friends on Sunday, May 3rd when we gathered at Aviva Cheuk’s home to install her as our Calgary Centre President for 2015-2016. We had the opportunity to present pins to our new Life Members and to thank and present Haya Stein with her Woman of Valour pin.

CHW kitchener-Waterloo Engage Your Hearts and Minds A stunning venue, a delicious dinner, an amazing guest speaker, and an update from our National President were the ingredients for a very successful Annual Campaign Event in Kitchener-Waterloo, titled “Engage Your Hearts and Minds.” On Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Victoria Park Pavilion, we had the privilege to welcome our National President, Claudia Goldman, who addressed over 80 attendees at our Annual Campaign event. Claudia engaged our hearts with an entertaining presentation about the recent CHW mission to Israel and enlightened the crowd with personalized stories from a few of our projects in Israel. Our guest speaker for the evening, Dr. Lior Gepstein, engaged our minds with an incredible presentation about his
work with pluri-potent stem cells and his research on their potential use in the repair of cardiac tissue. It was a very interesting multi-media presentation which educated us on significant medical advancements in regenerative medicine made in Israel and throughout the world. Once again we were able to enjoy an absolutely delicious buffet dinner prepared by Rachelle Matlow of Lily Ruth Catering, Cambridge, Ontario. Chabad Waterloo provided an equally delicious Kosher meal option. We would like to extend our deepest thanks and offer a hearty “Yasher Koach” to Judy Ginsler and Marcia Glick, Co-Convenors of this event. Their tireless work and impeccable organizational skills produced an outstanding evening enjoyed by all!

Pamphlets were made available to those interested in becoming organ donors. “Terry’s Cookbook” was presented to Sam by Sharon Fitch as a thank you gift.
On May 17th, we held a fun “Scrabble Sunday” at Celia Negin’s Party Room. Several games were held concurrently, and it was a noisy afternoon of stimulating, and slightly competitive banter. Who knew that there were so many two lettered words that actually meant something?
