Letter from the Executive Editor
CHW TODAY:
Inspiration, Engagement, Empowerment I joined CHW 29 years ago and from the beginning, the women I met who supported this organization always spoke about CHW Hadassim as the “Jewel in the Crown”. There was a sense of awe and incredible pride about this very special school and youth village. My first visit to Hadassim was during our CHW National Convention and election of Judy Mandleman as National President, which was held in Israel in 1993. I can still remember being invited into the classrooms, dormitories and family homes of Hadassim. The children showed us their school and home with the same pride that we had for all of them. So much time has passed since those magical moments, when I had my first introduction to Hadassim. In the ensuing years, I was so lucky to be connected with our dear relatives who lived in Even Yehuda, which borders on Hadassim, and who sent their children to Hadassim. Through their love and guidance, my understanding grew about how sacred our role is at CHW Hadassim and for the work we do, rescuing and educating the thousands of children who have lived and studied at Hadassim. Today, when I walk the grounds, I truly feel at home. The sweet chattering of French voices of the newest wave of rescued children fills the air. They
National President
CLAUDIA GOLDMAN are your children and my children and I cannot adequately express the thrill I have at being able to laugh and sing and dance with all of the amazing children and staff of Hadassim. The mayor of Even Yehuda has stated that the future of Hadassim and his town are forever intertwined and he has enthusiastically shared the town’s plan to make Hadassim the “Jewel in THEIR Crown”. Hadassim has become the official high school and youth village of Even Yehuda. The future for Hadassim looks brighter than ever and, through our partnership, Hadassim will continue to reach new heights as a shining light of what can be done by us to make our world a better place. Am Israel Chai!

Letter from the Editor-in-Chief
REDEFINING PHILANTHROPY “The aim of education is the knowledge, not of facts, but of values.” - William S. Burroughs As I write this article from Israel today, I wanted to highlight how the gift of charity is a special act of kindness that has a lasting effect on those in need. I’ve seen just how much of a positive impact our members and donors have had on the lives of so many recipients through CHW. Accompanied by CHW National President Claudia Goldman, I had the pleasure and privilege of attending the CHW Nahalal Youth Village graduation ceremony recently. We had the thrill of personally meeting these young, aspiring individuals at a time of great achievement for them. This event and experience had a tremendous impact on me and is something I instantly knew needed to be shared with our CHW members and friends. Surrounded by the graduates, parents and Nahalal teaching staff, I felt that I was part of a family. I also felt the deep and meaningful connection between the Nahalal teaching staff and their students. Many of the graduating students and their families shared their sentiments upon graduation. A particular young man, Jerach, stood out to me. Today, Jerach is a poised and confident young man with a bright future, but his story had a striking effect on me when I realized the path of his journey. Jerach arrived at CHW Nahalal at the age of 13 and was going through a lot of difficult times in his life. He was brought up in a rough neighbourhood north of Haifa and his father left his mother when he was born, leaving behind Jerach and his three brothers. His mother did the best she could but given the size of their family, struggled to put food on the table and provide for her children. When Jerach arrived at Nahalal, he was unhappy, unmotivated and did not value his education. Fortunately for Jerach, the head of dormitories for the boarding school at Nahalal took Jerach under his wing and appointed him as assistant counselor to help other children in the school. This opportunity invigorated Jerach and he thrived on helping other students, which, for the first time in his life, gave him the feeling that his efforts mattered and were making a difference. Jerach became so motivated that he took a special course for
National Executive Director
ALINA IANSON
young counsellors which enabled him to mentor and tutor grade 11 and 12 students. He spent the rest of his high-school years volunteering in the community and tutoring peers in his school; in fact, he is widely regarded as a role model for his peers. They say that when your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes much easier. Today, four years after his arrival at Nahalal, Jerach is not only graduating from CHW Nahalal, he is the proud recipient of an outstanding achievement award as well as the Gold Israel Youth Award. When sharing his sentiments on the evening of his graduation, he said, “Tonight is the last night that we are both children and adults. Thank you to Nahalal and CHW for all that you have given us; we will forever carry you with us through the journey of our lives.” From the rough neighbourhoods north of Haifa to becoming an award winning student and community volunteer, Jerach’s story reinforces the value of charity and good will. As I look toward what lies ahead for these children, a feeling of surreal amazement comes over me. These children are the 91st graduating class of Nahalal. Nahalal was the first project CHW undertook in 1926. Next year, as we celebrate our Centennial, I think of the immense positive impact that CHW has had on hundreds of thousands of Israelis, and the role that we have played already and will continue to play in our Jewish Homeland.

For me, your latest and greatest achievement is The CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute, where literally lives are saved daily. It is said, “seeing is believing;” however, it is difficult to believe with your own eyes that a hemiplegic and aphasic patient who arrives to the hospital is the same person who leaves walking,
It is hard to believe that summer is upon us and here at CYJ we are preparing for summer camps and our Biluim Israel Program. We are so proud of our Young Judaeans that once again, as part of their Tikun Olam project, have raised close to $5,000.00 for CHW Daycare Centres Rhythm and Movement Program. It is important for us to educate our chanichim on the important Jewish value of “Healing the World”, and what better way then helping underprivileged children in Israel. The faces, on both the children and on our participants, when they meet and interact in the daycare is a sight to be seen. Both CHW and CYJ can be proud of the connection with
talking, and happy. It looks like magic and indeed some say that modern medicine is magical; but at Assaf Harofeh this is the reality; one made possible by you, and we could not be more thankful to CHW. We wish you a productive and prosperous year. Warmly, Benny Davidson, MD Director General & CEO

It must never be taken for granted the importance of our work and the need for us to continue long into the future. CYJ is proud of their long relationship with CHW. From the Board of Canadian Young Judaea, our families and our campers, we would like to wish you a healthy and safe summer. Risa Epstein National Executive Director
Greetings from HADASSAH INTERNATIONAL
HADASSAH INTERNATIONAL It is my great pleasure to have this opportunity to greet you in my role as Hadassah Women’s Zionist Organization of America (HWZOA) National Chair of Hadassah International (HI). In this capacity, Melissa Kaplan, Director, Hadassah International, and I had the privilege of welcoming the CHW President, Claudia Goldman, and Executive Director, Alina Ianson to Hadassah’s offices in Manhattan in April, where we met with Ellen Hershkin, HWZOA National President and other Hadassah leaders. Once again we were reminded that we have so much in common including our mutual concerns for women, children and health. One of our top priorities is our ongoing support of the Hadassah Medical Organization whose mission of advanced medical care and innovative research continue to be the hallmark of its life-saving work.

I am also delighted to share that two of our newest HI units are flourishing – in Brazil and in Israel. Both have already demonstrated through their fundraising efforts that they share the values and commitment to Hadassah as CHW has for so many years in the past. In closing, may we continue to work together to support the mission of HI. And may our wonderful friends in CHW enjoy continued success in their ongoing endeavors. Most sincerely,

Since this time, the pair has released over six singles and seven albums, including a debut English album, that all became instant hits and topped the radio charts! Recently, the duo released their second album, which succeeded their first, receiving high recognition both in Israel and abroad, shaping them as one of the most successful, professional, and unique artists, especially among youth. HOW YOU CAN HELP HADASSAH HEAL HEROES Shuki Golboa became a true hero when he tackled the terrorist who murdered 13 year old Hallel Yaffa Ariel on June 30th, while Hallel was asleep in her bed. Jewish people around the world still face dangerous, rampant and even violent anti-Semitism. In the face of terror, the actions of heroes inspire us to do more. Shuki Golboa became a true hero when he tackled the terrorist who murdered 13 year old Hallel Yaffa Ariel, while she was asleep in her bed. Shuki was able to neutralize the terrorist, and helped to save the lives of others in the process.
During Shuki’s stay at Hadassah Hospital, he was visited by Dvir Mussai, a fellow former patient of Hadassah Hospital. Dvir was brought to Hadassah Hospital 13 years ago, when he also became a victim of a terror attack. Dvir has made it his personal mission to visit every victim of terror who arrives at Hadassah Hospital, and most recently he visited Shuki.
During the confrontation, Shuki was injured and rushed to Hadassah Hospital where he was operated on in the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower. Shuki’s life was saved at Hadassah Hospital, though he sadly lost an eye.
Shuki has since returned home to his wife Shlomit and their four children. Before leaving, he expressed his gratitude to Hadassah Hospital by saying, “Thank you for the wonderful care, Hadassah helped me feel at home” Shuki’s wife also shared her sentiments, “Thank you for making [Shuki’s] stay in the hospital as pleasant as possible. Continue your good work. I say this with tremendous appreciation for your work and dedication.”
While Shuki was recovering at Hadassah Hospital, Claudia Goldman, CHW National President and Alina Ianson, CHW National Executive Director, were in Israel and had the opportunity to visit him. They listened to Shuki recount his story, and were so touched by both his selflessness and positive attitude.

CHW Gives Care DORMITORY HEY: LIFE AT CHW HADASSIM
It has been two years since the establishment of the French Na’aleh Program at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village. Since this time, enrolment in the program has more than doubled, growing from 30 children in 2014 to over 70 children in 2015! [ 17 ] Summer 2016 ORAH Magazine
Children: CARE
Before CHW
After CHW A mouldy, aging building was replaced with a vibrant living space
These children are coming to CHW Hadassim seeking refuge from anti-Semitism in France, in the hopes of finding a safer environment, and dreaming of a brighter future. For this reason, CHW and Hadassim refuse to turn away any child and family in need. In order to accommodate the growing numbers, CHW undertook the renovation of Dormitory Hey. Over this past year, Dormitory Hey has undergone major renovations; including gutting the interior and resurfacing the exterior. The children in the youth village have been watching the remarkable transformation of the building. “This is simply a dream come true,” shares Shana, a child from the French Na’aleh Program. Shana decided to come to CHW Hadassim for one simple reason: she no longer felt safe in France. Shana felt that she had to hide her Jewish identity and felt uncomfortable; she believed that this was not how one should feel in their home. Shana and her parents agreed, and decided that it was time for her to leave France. Shana’s older brother was already studying in Israel, so, they decided Israel would be a safe choice. Shana worked very hard this school year, pushing herself to learn Hebrew, and integrate into life in CHW Hadassim, and Israel.
Shana shares, “I feel that this was the best choice for me and for my family. I feel like Israel and Hadassim are my home. My friends and I appreciate this new building so much; it is so beautiful. It is our home and it makes us so happy! The new building has created a different atmosphere among our group because we now spend a lot of time in the common room and we have become more of a family.”
“
The new building has created a different atmosphere among our group because we now spend a lot of time in the common room and we have become more of a family.
”
Shana and her peers shared, “We would like to use this opportunity to thank you, who made it possible. It is amazing that you do not personally know us yet, but are so generous to give us this amazing gift. Todah Rabah!”

HEALTHCARE: CHW Gives Hope
HEALING HEROES AT HADASSAH HOSPITAL The Lower Level Operating Rooms have been fully functional since February 2016. The new unit has already performed over 3,000 surgeries, which has had a tremendous impact on Hadassah Hospital, and most importantly, on the patients and their families. The opening of the Lower Level Operating Rooms hold a great deal of importance. Today, we are faced with a wave of terror; both in Israel, and around the world. In a major effort to ensure that Hadassah Hospital can properly and safely care for its patients, the new surgical rooms are located underground, protected against both conventional and nonconventional attacks. This further advances Hadassah Hospital’s high level of care and
[ 19 ] Summer 2016 ORAH Magazine
capabilities as a hospital that stands as an unwavering pillar dedicated to saving lives. Sarah, a nurse who works in the Lower Level Operating Rooms, shares “The new operating rooms have a tremendous impact on patients’ lives. The truth is, if we can give our patients the best, why not?”
Healthcare: HOPE
On a daily basis, patients arrive at Hadassah Hospital in need of urgent care that determines their future health and wellbeing. Hadassah must ensure that it is capable of caring for each of its patients and victims of terror. Dvir is one such victim whose young life was saved by Hadassah Hospital. It was 13 years ago when Dvir’s remarkable story and special relationship with Hadassah began. When Dvir was 13 years old, he went on a class field trip to pick cherries and help a local farmer. During the trip, Dvir and two of his friends were fooling around, as teenage boys do, and the teacher sent them back to the buses. As Dvir approached the fence near where the buses were parked, he stepped on a landmine. This landmine was intended to kill the farmer. Dvir shares, “I remember going up in the air, my legs flying up. I remember the smell of gunpowder, the noise and then ringing in my ears. Stones flew on top of me after I fell to the ground.” Dvir was rushed to Hadassah Hospital for emergency care. For six hours, the medical team at Hadassah, headed by Professor Avi Rivkind, worked tirelessly to save Dvir’s life. His injuries were extensive, damaging his intestinal track and internal organs. The doctors explained that the goal was to first stop the bleeding, stabilize him, and save Dvir’s life. However, due to the nature of the attack, it took the doctors two full days to wash all the dirt out of his wounds, in order to prevent infection. On Dvir’s third day in the ICU, a major terror attack took place on a bus. Hadassah Hospital needed to look after Dvir, as well as the dozens of new terror victims. This is Hadassah’s ongoing reality.
The medical team at Hadassah Hospital never gave up on Dvir, even when the young boy struggled to cope with numerous surgeries. Today, Dvir is 26 years old. He met his wife, Orly at Hadassah Hospital, and his child, 2 year old Yair was also born at Hadassah. Since that fateful day in 2002, Dvir has undergone over 30 surgeries. Dvir feels that he owes his life to Hadassah Hospital and for this reason, he has decided to give back to the place that gave him his life. Dvir volunteers in the Herzstein Heritage Center at Hadassah Hospital and he is a spokesperson for Hadassah International and Hadassah Women’s Zionist Organization of America (HWZOA). Dvir has made it a part of his personal mission to share his story and to visit victims of terror who are treated at Hadassah Hospital. Dvir and Hadassah have a special relationship; in his words, “I am grateful to the staff for saving my life and for their continued devotion throughout the years. Their doors are always open to me. Hadassah is like my second home and family. In fact, Professor Alon Pikarsky (Dvir’s Chief Surgeon), recited one of the blessings at my wedding under the chuppah.” Finally, Dvir adds, “Thank you to CHW because you helped me before you knew me.” It is stories, like Dvir’s, that motivates CHW to remain dedicated to Hadassah Hospital and the remarkable work done here. CHW is proud to support Hadassah Hospital and the Lower Level Operating Rooms that are saving lives daily.

WOMEN:
CHW Gives Worth
Women: WORTH
SARA’S JOURNEY LAUNCHES HER ‘UP’ TO THE STARS Sometimes in life it can be hard to measure our impact. However, once you learn about Sara’s story, you will understand just how critical CHW’s role is in positively influencing and saving the lives of women and families. Sara, outwardly, appeared to be a content woman in a happy marriage with two beautiful children. However, she was silently suffering from an extremely abusive marriage. Sara was scared to share her secret, yet she knew that if she stayed, her two children would be in danger and she refused to expose her young children to an abusive home. Sara searched for ways out. Unfortunately, when she turned to her family for support, they did not believe her. Out of options, Sara turned to a WIZO shelter. The day that Sara and her children left home, they came with nothing but the clothes on their backs; there was no time to pack their belongings. During Sara’s time at the shelter, she and her children received love and care. They were exposed to women who had escaped similar situations and were given the psychological counseling that they were in need of. As Sara progressed, she was encouraged to enroll in the Unlimited Potential (UP) program. This unique program equips women with vocational skills and assists them in developing the necessary skills for a successful career. This is critical for many women, like Sara, who lack family support and need to become self sufficient in order to prevent falling back into dangerous and abusive situations. Sara excelled in the program, but shared, “Initially, when I began the program, I was so nervous, I was
embarrassed. I did not know how to use a computer. I put my fears aside because I knew this was my chance to be financially stable and save my children.” Sara was able to attend classes while her children were being looked after at the shelter. This not only allowed Sara to learn, but it gave her peace of mind knowing that her children were in caring hands. During the UP Program, Sara’s confidence began to grow. It was the first time in her life that Sara felt intelligent and capable. No one had ever given her the opportunity to discover her strengths before. Oshra, a guide from the program shared, “This program helps single mothers, like Sara, to improve their lives. It not only teaches women practical skills, but it teaches them to value themselves, and that they can be somebody.” Upon completing the program, Sara’s guides assisted her in finding a job. Sara now works in an office, making a good salary that enables her to afford an apartment, daycare for her children, food on the table every day, and the freedom to live the life she deserves. As Sara reflects on the past few years, she expresses, “First, my life was saved by the shelter, and then they saved my life again - through the UP Program. Today, I am happy, capable, and a proud single mother to my children. I am able to teach my children that anything is possible and that one can overcome any challenge in life, no matter how difficult. There are no limits in life.”

Catherine Epstein Why I Became a
Sustainer Profile
Sustainer
What on earth do my mother-in-law, Air Canada, and my father’s career have in common with being a CHW Sustainer? Plenty!
Just after my engagement to Michael, my soon-to-be mother-in- law and long time CHW member, Sylvia Epstein, presented me with a Life Membership to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO. Thus began my love affair with Israel, our vibrant organization and the many projects it supports. As a CHW member, initially in Halifax and for the past 27 years Vancouver, I grew to appreciate and participate in the efforts that enhance the lives of women and children in Israel. As committed as I was to help those I thought I would “never meet”, that commitment would all change 18 years ago! I had the privilege and honour to travel to Israel as a nonvoting delegate during a World Zionist Congress in 1999. I left Vancouver for what would be an impressionable 10 days in Israel. New friend and fellow traveler, Lisa Colt and I met at the Toronto Pearson Airport, where we boarded an Air Canada flight for Tel Aviv. While the various excursions, political meetings and speeches were most interesting and historic, nothing could compare to, nor emotionally prepare me for our visiting various CHW projects during our stay! How heartwarming it was to see preschoolers at the Nina Cohen Atlantic Provinces Daycare nourished in a safe and loving environment. Nourished not only by hot meals and snacks, but intellectually through reading, creativity and playtime. I will always remember the smiles and laughter of those precious children, as well as the pacifiers all named and hung in a row, awaiting nap time! How impressed I was while visiting Assaf Harofeh Medical
Center and Hadassah Hospital. There, I saw state of the art healthcare where any patient in need is welcomed. While scientific advances made at these medical facilities are internationally recognized, it was the patients and doctors who shared “their stories” that left their mark. I was deeply moved to hear from students attending Nahalal Youth Village and Hadassim Children and Youth Village, the impact that CHW had had on their lives. When hope seemed all too distant, CHW was there! Our support makes a world of difference to these young people! Each of the projects visited during that trip made a lasting impression, and my passion for CHW and its projects was heightened. How does that passion translate into being a CHW Sustainer? During my upbringing, to this very day, my amazing, now 90 year old father, Jim Saunders, shared lessons learned from an insurance career spanning 40 years. He reminded me to “stay clear of propane barbeques, and never purchase a flat roofed house. Most importantly, NEVER be underinsured!” In that light, I chose to be a CHW Sustainer; a program ensuring our facilities will have the perpetual maintenance and updating required; an insurance that will sustain our prized projects that touch the lives of so many. As my parent’s daughter and a proud CHW member, it made sense to say, “Yes, I would love to be a Sustainer… count me in!”

CHW in Canada Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) is known for the good work that is being done for Children, Healthcare, and Women in Israel. However, CHW also partners with many different organizations in Canada, and CHW members in Centres from coast to coast participate in these local charitable activities. Here is a peek at a few organizations, or initiatives, that were recently supported by CHW in our various communities. CHW Calgary Chanukah Toy Drive
For over 13 years, CHW Calgary has held a toy drive prior to Chanukah. The toys are given to Jewish Family Services and the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) for distribution to families who cannot afford any extras. CHW Calgary is proud that the 2015 Toy Drive provided toys, movie passes and gift cards at the ACH and JFS. CHW Calgary is proud of this mitzvah project that supports their local community and reflects CHW’s values in investing in Children, Healthcare, and Women.
CHW Edmonton Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary
Since 2009, CHW Edmonton has proudly sponsored the Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary. The Bursary celebrates Terry’s life, and honours her work with children in the early learning years. The $1,000 bursary is awarded to full-time, second year students enrolled in the Early Learning and Child Care program at MacEwan University in Edmonton. Terry Horwitz z’l graduated from the program in 2004.
CHW Toronto Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
CHW Toronto has been an active community partner with the Foundation at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, contributing to the funding of a Neonatal Intensive Care Patient Room and currently, the CHW Exam Room in the Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre. The Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre and its breast cancer experts ease patient anxiety by providing diagnosis and detailed treatment plans in just 24 hours. CHW Toronto is proud to partner with Sunnybrook on these meaningful projects that reflect CHW values and reminds us of the importance of supporting our local communities.
CHW Vancouver Jewish Family Services Agency
CHW Vancouver has proudly partnered with various local organizations over the years. CHW Vancouver continues to provide new cosmetic items to women at the Jewish Family Services Agency in Vancouver.
CHW Ottawa Maureen O’Neill Award in Gender Studies
Offered through Carleton University, this award was endowed in 1985 by CHW in honour of Maureen O’Neil, Coordinator, Status of Woman Canada. It is awarded annually, when merited, to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research who is doing work in Women’s Studies.
CHW Montreal CHW Montreal Pro-Am supports LOVE
For 7 years, CHW Montreal has collaborated with Leave Out Violence (LOVE) Quebec, an organization that works with youth aged 13 to 19 by helping them end the cycles of violence in their lives and by training them to become leaders in violence-prevention within their communities. Staff and youth from LOVE volunteered at the event and had a chance to meet to the participants. Proceeds from the event were donated to LOVE. ORAH Magazine Summer 2016 [ 26 ]
Woman of Valour JULIE SPIRA
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Julie Spira came a long way to become a Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) Woman of Valour. Julie immigrated from Hungary to Canada in 1965, after the 1956 Hungarian Revolutionary War. She followed her sister, who had previously made the move from Hungary. Julie and her parents were some of the lucky ones who obtained passports to legally make the journey to Canada. After arriving in Canada, Julie was introduced to CHW by her sister, who was already a member of Nir Galim Chapter. At the time, Julie was one of the youngest members of CHW, and is an active member of the Gila Chapter to this day. Apart from being an incredibly loyal and longstanding member, Julie is also a CHW Sustainer, belongs to the CHW Legacy Circle, and is a member of the Toronto Centre Executive. Woman of Valour
She feels that all CHW projects need support, and feels good knowing her donations help fund a multitude of CHW projects. Julie said, “I don’t feel any different depending on which project I give to. Of course I have my favourite projects, but by being a Woman of Valour, I was just giving to Israel. I am a Zionist, and history has taught us that Israel is the only country in the world where we are relatively safe. Safe in the sense we are guarding against things like the Holocaust ever happening again. And I will do anything in my power to give back.” Of all of the CHW projects, Julie feels that Nahalal Children and Youth Village is the most special to her. This program helps so many different children, not only from Israel, but Jewish children from across the world as well. Julie said, “Nahalal accepts so many children from bad home situations, and helps them get away from that. Nahalal gives them very deep help, and that is what influenced me to become a Woman of Valour.” In 2012 Julie visited Nahalal, and was so impressed with what she saw. The experience gave her faith in what was being accomplished by CHW at Nahalal Children and Youth Village.
Throughout Julie’s many visits to Israel, she has spent time at just about all of our projects. These experiences were incredible for her, to see firsthand all of the life changing work that is being done to support women,

children and families across Israel. Julie said, “I think everyone should go at least once in their lifetime and see all the good things we are doing. Seeing all the love that we are giving to the children is so special; they are all making something of themselves.” When asked if she has any advice for someone who is thinking of becoming a Woman of Valour, Julie said, “Do as much as you can. We need to do everything we can to support Israel. I want to do everything I can to help improve our projects.”

Marilyn Libin & Dr. Joseph Levy With backgrounds in education and healthcare, and strong connections to Israel, it is no surprise that Marilyn Libin and Joe Levy are such passionate supporters of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW). Marilyn and Joe came from different walks of life but were brought together by their passion and love for philanthropy and Israel.
WOMAN AND MAN OF DISTINCTION
Woman and Man of Distinction
Marilyn and Joe with 2015 CHW Gala guest speakers Colonel (ret.) Natan Barak and The Honourable John Baird
Joe was born in Romania, and lived in Israel before immigrating to Canada in 1952. Marilyn was born in Edmonton, and later moved to Calgary. The couple continues to call Calgary home. Marilyn and Joe recently made a Woman and Man of Distinction gift to CHW. It wasn’t until relatively recently that Marilyn and Joe got involved with CHW, Marilyn said, “I didn’t really have a connection with CHW before 2003. I was working, raising kids, and didn’t get involved. But in 2003 my friend asked me if I would be interested in joining CHW. I wasn’t working, and had free time; it was a good time to get involved with the community.” Marilyn has since been the Chairperson of the Youth Aliyah Campaign, now the Annual Campaign, she was Chair of Council in Calgary, and later went on to join the National Board of Directors. As for Joe, his relationship with CHW began through Marilyn. Both Marilyn and Joe have been to Israel on numerous occasions, and visit CHW projects as often as possible. They have a love for the projects, and have made it a personal goal to help out as much as they can. They both are truly fascinated by Netanya Technological High school, and how the administration, and teachers treat their students. Joe said, “It is a very unique school for Israel. It works with the most marginalized, disenfranchised and low income families. They’ve been kicked out of high school, arrested, their parents have kicked them out, and social services has turned their back on them. Netanya takes them in, period.” Joe continues to speak highly of the school saying, “They have incredible programs there for the kids; the patisserie students make the most incredible cookies, cakes, and pastries. They get hired before they even graduate.” On a recent visit to Netanya, Marilyn and Joe noticed that the students in the business program were not using computers; they were sitting there with books and pencils.
They thought to themselves, “Business in the 21st century without computers?” So, Marilyn and Joe decided to outfit a computer lab for the business program. The students can now create spreadsheets, and learn more real-world practical business applications. “The teachers are amazing, they know how to deal with each of the kids, and provide them with the leadership they need,” Joe said. Marilyn added, another reason for their support of Netanya is “Most of our projects are supported by WIZO. Our Daycares are a combination of CHW and WIZO. Even our schools like Hadassim and Nahalal have extra support. Netanya really gets no support other than CHW, so we felt strongly that was a school we wanted to support.” For Marilyn and Joe, supporting Netanya Technological High School is not the only thing that is important to them; what’s really important is supporting Israel. Marilyn and Joe said, “We believe Jews all over the world rely upon Israel. Israel is the foundation, Israel gives us hope and spirit. There is no other country in the world that has done in 60 years what Israel has done. We benefit from that, even though we’re in the diaspora. Our kids are safe, even if they don’t know it, with Israel. In many ways Israel is our rock of Gibraltar.” When asked what they would recommend to others who are thinking of making a Woman or Man of Distinction Gift, the couple said, “Your donation will be very well used. When you donate to CHW you’re really getting your money’s worth. The money goes to the kids, and the projects, where it is needed most.”

“Why I Aspire” to be a CHW Director
We are proud to introduce the incoming 2016-2018 National Directors, who will be installed by acclamation at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), November 6th in Vancouver.
Susan Abramowitz (Montreal) Roald Dahl was right: Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world. In my 20’s I knew exactly how I’d do that – by raising funds for Israel. That’s what inspired me to join CHW. What fuels my desire to serve on the Board today is helping CHW forge ahead to: Engage volunteers. Build unparalleled donor experiences. Grow revenue. Identify emerging issues. And, ultimately, ensure a sustainable future. As a big-picture thinker who thrives on challenges others lose sleep over, this is what energizes me. And why I’m ready to serve another term as a Director!
Claire Conrad (Vancouver) As I approach the end of my first term as a CHW Director I reflect back on the meaningful experience that it has been. I have learned so much about the organization and the decision making that comes with the position and feel privileged to be a part of it all. I look forward to the next term of office, to working with the new President and the Board and continuing to educate myself on the projects we support and to participate in the considered planning necessary to further these undertakings.
Debbie Eisenberg (Kitchener-Waterloo) Declared intention to run for National President As a Director, and National First Vice-President, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with a team of talented, innovative, results-driven women, shaping and implementing CHW’s strategic plan to ensure good governance, fiscal responsibility, achieving fundraising goals, and growth. I proudly embrace CHW’s nearly 100-year history of passionately supporting programs and services for Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel and Canada. As CHW’s Centennial approaches, we will celebrate our extraordinary past accomplishments, and look ahead with optimism and excitement to meeting future challenges and creating new opportunities. I look forward to returning as a Director, and would be honoured to serve as CHW’s National President.
Marla Goodwin Zipper (Montreal) As a Life Member of CHW for over 20 years and a Past President of the Montreal Centre, I am passionate about the important services that CHW has been providing to children, women and families in Israel and Canada since 1917. As a National Director, I look forward to being an ambassador for CHW, contributing my professional skill set to strategic planning and decision making and to working together with the talented, dedicated and motivated women from across the country who comprise the CHW national leadership team.
Gina Grant (Ottawa) I aspire to be a Director of CHW because the opportunity to work alongside CHW women from across the country to achieve the goals we set out at the onset of each term in the CHW Strategic Plan is so rewarding. I enjoy getting to see the full spectrum of the organization from the smallest fundraising chapter at one end, through larger centres and national campaigns and finally to the projects in Israel at the other end. It is a privilege and an honour to be a Director of CHW as well as lots of fun.
Beverly Kahn (Toronto) In the coming years, CHW will examine and respond to the changing face of volunteerism in the 21st century. The millenials will be 50% of the workforce by 2020 and our continuity is dependent upon the next generation of women who will ultimately lead this organization. I want to ensure that CHW as an organization is ready to engage their talents and provides them the essential leadership tools as they make a meaningful volunteer contribution. I relish the opportunity to continue to work as a CHW Director and support the important work of CHW. I value our vision, mission and values and want to leverage our multigenerational talent to reach our fundraising goals.
Evgenya Knopov (Calgary) I feel delighted and privileged to serve on the National Board of Directors for CHW at this special time, when we are celebrating CHW’s 100th birthday. It’s an honor to be part of the governance that will ensure that all the achievements and best practices are taken to the next Centennial and that new opportunities and policies are introduced. We serve to guarantee that all our projects are thriving, and the way we continue to conduct business is as relevant to our daughters as it was to our mothers. I believe that CHW is an amazing philanthropic organization that is ready to grow and change the size of our projects, and the face of our membership.
ORAH Magazine Summer 2016 [ 32 ]
Esther Kulik (Ottawa) As a Sabra and an immensely proud member since 2005, I remain very inspired by Lillian Freiman, an Ottawan and a Zionist, who was elected President of the Dominion Hadassah Organization. To assist the war-wracked Jews in Palestine, Lillian visited every Jewish centre and launched the strongest Canadian Jewish organization and the greatest fundraising drive. Our strength is in numbers and I’m amazed that CHW was founded almost a century ago, remaining tightly affiliated with Hadassah International and World WIZO. Since 1917, the impact CHW makes for our Israeli community is vital. Through fundraising, the Children, Healthcare and Women programs/projects provide opportunities for countless recipients, enabling second chances and positive outcomes.
Elayna Latsky (Toronto) I am so proud of CHW and the life-changing work that we do for children, healthcare and women in Israel. Israel is constantly under attack and needs to defend itself and its very existence. Now more than ever, the Government will be required to focus on defense and our support will be relied on by our beloved projects. I have thoroughly enjoyed the past two years serving as a Director and as National Treasurer. We have fascinating discussions and sometimes must make tough decisions, but it has been very rewarding and a great experience. As we celebrate our upcoming 100th year anniversary and plan for our future, I am very excited to be part of it all.
Marilyn Libin (Calgary)
Declared intention to run for First Vice-President I wish to become a Director because I have a great love for Israel and for the work that CHW does for the people of Israel. As a Director I have a say in decisions that will benefit our projects. Also, I believe that I can contribute to CHW in a constructive way with ideas based on my background experience and based on my respect for the organization. I would very much like to be a part of the continuation of the success of CHW.
Judith Lifshitz (Montreal) Two years ago, when I first sought to become a CHW Director, I explained that I aspired to this position to participate actively in the governance of CHW, and to play a part in preserving its unique fundraising culture. CHW is undeniably a strong and flourishing fundraising organization. However, it still faces many challenges in realizing all of its charitable objectives. I aspire to continue to be a CHW Director so that I may continue not only to express my love for Israel effectively, but also to contribute in a meaningful way to the continuing growth and success of CHW.
[ 33 ] Summer 2016 ORAH Magazine
Fran Luborsky (Toronto) Upon completion of my term as President of CHW Toronto Centre in September, 2016 I believe that it just made sense to continue my support for CHW at the National level. I have always enjoyed working with the women of CHW because of our shared goals in helping to better the lives of women and children in Israel and Canada. As a CHW Director, I hope that my dedication, combined with my accumulated CHW experience will be a positive influence in making our organization even stronger.
Gayla Schwartz (Toronto) I aspire to be a Director because I believe in CHW and all it stands for. Having been involved in the organization for over 25 years, and being very active at the chapter and Toronto level for the past 10, I have gained knowledge and developed the skills and leadership qualities that are essential to being an effective and valuable Board member. After visiting our projects in 2014, I am motivated to serve on the National Board to support CHW’s mission, vision and values.
Brondell Shapiro (Toronto) I would like to be a CHW Director in order to have a significant role in decision making. These important choices concern the finances related to our projects in Israel: Hadassim, our daycare centres, Netanya Technological High School, Nahalal, Assaf Harofeh and Hadassah Hospitals, WIZO Women’s shelters and hot lines, the Neri Bloomfield Academy of Design, as well as Canadian Young Judaea, and projects in Canada. Directors also have greater insight into the entire workings of CHW both in Israel and in Canada. They work diligently to ensure that our projects are managed as efficiently as possible. I would like to be a part of that important process.
Betty Sherwood (Calgary) As a third generation member of CHW, it’s fitting that I offer myself as a Director at the launch of our Centennial. My having lived Jewish life in two different communities will be advantageous for our beloved organization and its goals. In Toronto and Calgary I’ve played roles at the chapter and city levels, including encouraging Calgary’s Tikvah Chapter to remain lively and relevant. I’ve experienced the national level on the Governance Committee. I know that my commitment inspires others to step forward to continue to assist the clients of our projects on their paths to productive and healthy lives.

Rochelle Levinson has been involved with Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) for just about half a century. Her relationship with CHW began when she moved from Winnipeg to Vancouver. Moving to a new city, Rochelle didn’t know many people other than her husband. So, what did she do to make friends? She joined CHW, of course! This was a perfect way for Rochelle to become a part of a great cause, and make great friends. She joined the Aviva Chapter, and is still active in the Chapter to this day. At the Chapter level, Rochelle held just about every role possible, and she is still Chair of the annual fundraiser held by the Aviva Chapter. Apart from being active at the Chapter and local levels, Rochelle has also been incredibly involved with CHW at the national level as well. She began her CHW National journey joining the National Executive, later becoming National Secretary, Vice-President, and from 2002 to 2005 Rochelle served as CHW National President. With such a long established background with CHW it only made sense for Rochelle that the next logical step was to continue her dedication by joining the CHW Legacy Circle. Rochelle shared, “I felt that I wanted to leave behind something I believe in. CHW has been a very large part of my life, as you can imagine for the last 50 years.” When asked if there was a particular CHW project that influenced her decision to join the Legacy Circle, she mentioned that she has always had a special connection to Netanya Technological High School. The Club Room at Netanya bears her name, honouring her presidency. She had this to share about Netanya, “What impressed me most, was the feeling I got when I was in Netanya. The Director was an outstanding man - he cared for these kids almost like it was his own family. I felt that anything I could do to help him and his school was really a worthwhile cause.” Rochelle continued by saying, “I just felt a very strong attachment to Netanya. I felt that since I have something named after me I would like to do what I can to help out. There isn’t much I can do for them now, but I can leave a lasting legacy for them.” However, it is not only Netanya that influenced Rochelle’s Legacy gift, “The Directors at all our projects are extremely
involved in the institutions. It’s outstanding how the kids are cared for at the daycares. They have a level of care there that looks like it exceeds what goes on here in this country. I would like to see that level of work and care carried on.” As for advice to people considering joining the Legacy Circle Rochelle says, “It’s something that should probably come from within. You have to want to help your people, but also your children. Most people think our legacy goes through our children, but they’ll make their own in their life. So you have to do something that you feel good about. I think legacy is a very personal gift.”
“
What impressed me most was the feeling I got when I got when I was in Netanya
”
Rochelle also believes that the CHW Legacy Circle is an incredibly important project that CHW started. “It’s open to everyone, regardless of what your contribution is. It’s out there as a means of giving, and I think that’s very important; lots of people just don’t think of it. In a lot of cases people sometimes can’t give now, but can give after.” The Legacy Circle Gift is one that keeps on giving. Israel is the home for Jews all over the world, and it is necessary that we give back and support Israel when we can. The Legacy Circle Gift allows you to leave a lasting legacy, and provide support for Israel.

CHW Memories Project
Neri Bloomfield
Philanthropy & Education In October 2013, CHW Ottawa launched the “Memories Project”, a historical look into the foundation that has made their Centre what it is today. The “Memories Project” has inspired this series of articles in the Orah magazine, kicking off the countdown to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO’s Centennial in 2017. Neri Bloomfield was born in Bucharest into a family of ardent Zionists. Her grandmother was the first woman delegate to the Second Zionist Congress. In 1935, Neri and her younger brother were sent to boarding school in England, because the King of Romania, a family friend, gave warning of the Nazi threat. In 1941, the family settled in Montreal where Neri continued her education at McGill University.

progression into the Presidency, gaining experience in every aspect of the organization while holding all offices. In 1944, she was Vice-President of Junior Hadassah; a decade later she was the youngest Council President in Montreal Hadassah-WIZO’s history.
In 1972, Neri was elected the ninth President of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO. During her term, her view was “Education takes priority, but fundraising Shortly after, she joined Canadian is the name of the game. In Hadassah-WIZO. “It was the Canadian Hadassah-WIZO, as natural thing to do; I was taken in other organizations, one must by the hand and made a member.” educate the membership about Mrs. Bloomfield’s career in its importance, and equip them Canadian Hadassah-WIZO to do it effectively.” demonstrates a gradual

When looking back on her years in office, she shared this thought,“It was a way of life. It wasn’t a club that I joined. I was centred; it was a profession of choice. To this day, my weekly schedule devotes three full days to organizational work.” With grace and humour, Neri served her community and country through numerous philanthropic and service organizations. Her dedication and ability earned her respect in what were previously predominantly male arenas; she had the distinction of being the first woman to hold the positions of President for both the Canadian Zionist Federation and the Jewish National Fund.
Clara Balinsky
Practical Idealism Clara Balinsky was born in Kharkov, Ukraine, and immigrated to Montreal with her family at the age of six. She was a proud Canadian who spent a lifetime fostering the Canadian ideals of democracy, human rights and multiculturalism. This was reflected in her choice of organizations for which she worked. Clara graduated from The McGill Conservatory of Music in 1939, and served her community, province and country with her musical knowledge. Her major contribution to this field was the founding of Montreal’s Concert Society in 1957. Clara’s mother was a member of Canadian HadassahWIZO, and at the request of a Past President of Montreal Hadassah-WIZO, Clara formed a new chapter in 1942.
She was a practical idealist; believing in the human values of integrity, education and continuity. Her career within Canadian Hadassah-WIZO is evidence of that.
1976 - 1980
Prior to accepting the challenge of the National Presidency in 1976, Clara founded and coordinated the Public Affairs Departmen, which was created to promote a Jewish-Christian dialogue, with an emphasise on women’s and children’s rights in connection with UNESCO. Personal highlights of her years in office were: Building Independence Hall (CHW’s 30th birthday gift to Israel), and CHW’s “Jubilee in
Jerusalem” in 1977, at which Menachem Begin announced he was inviting Anwar Sadat to Israel for peace talks. Clara Balinsky was an educator in the deepest sense – nurturing younger members and offering them encouragement to take on leadership roles. She was a role model inspiring members with her energy, creativity and passion for perfection. Her personal philosophy was, “Individuals must be helped through caring and education to overcome ignorance, oppression and prejudice.” ORAH Magazine Summer 2016 [ 46 ]
CHW Memories Project
Mirial Small
Unending Dedication Mirial Small was raised in a staunchly Zionist family in St. Catharines, Ontario. Belonging to Young Judaea as a young girl, “It was natural that I should graduate to Hadassah-WIZO, my mother’s organization. I treasure the silver bowl inscribed D of Z, 1905, a wedding gift to my parents from the Daughters of Zion (forerunner of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO).” She always believed that each of us had the choice of witnessing history, succumbing to the tug of its tide, or of helping to control its flow. Mirial decided to be one who tried to help shape our Jewish world. Mirial devoted her efforts to her community serving on or Chairing many Boards: Beth Tzedec Synagogue, Jewish Family and Child Service, and Women’s Divisions for UIA both at the city and provincial

level. It was the trauma of the 1973 Yom Kippur War which was the catalyst for her becoming the founding Chair of the Women’s Division of United Israel Appeal of Canada.
1980 - 1983
Canadian Hadassah-WIZO remained central in her life; she served leadership roles in Toronto including President and assumed the Presidency of the National organization in 1980. It was of utmost concern to her to “Do justice to this remarkable organization, prized as it is for its dedication, its discipline, its aspirations and accomplishments.” Mirial treasured memories of respect accorded her when she represented CHW at local, national and international forums; she held dear the
friendships which developed from her trans-Canada visits. Having grown up in a small town, Mirial was sensitive to the need of “Maintaining a dynamic link with the dedicated women in isolated communities who struggle to identify with their Jewish world.” Mirial said “The four years was a great adventure filled with unique experiences, learning opportunities and satisfaction for serving Israel. I shall be forever grateful for this privilege, which added a significant dimension to my profile as a Jew, a woman and a human being.”
Cecily Peters
Empowering the future Cecily Peters was imbued with love for Canadian HadassahWIZO at the knees of her grandmother and mother – Sarah and Dorothy Goodman, attending her first bazaar at the age of eight. Her mother was a founder of Western and Kadimah Chapters in Toronto, serving as the latter’s President for 16 years; thus their home was constantly buzzing with fundraising plans for teas, sales and socials. With these dedicated women as role models, it was natural that after Cecily’s marriage, in 1948, she joined the Deborah Chapter and embarked upon her career as a professional volunteer for CHW. Through this association, she earned many long lasting friendships and learned the skills of fundraising, and leadership which prepared her for the Presidencies of her Chapter, of Toronto Council and ultimately of the National organization. Cecily travelled extensively on behalf of CHW. In Canada she
developed close ties between cities and the National Office. Her numerous trips to Israel resulted in a better understanding and warm relationships with World WIZO, Youth Aliyah and Assaf Harofeh Medical Center and Research Center.
1983 - 1987
Cecily recognized the importance of attracting bright young women to CHW and offered creative, challenging programming (Aviv Conferences) to achieve this goal, so that the organization would continue to flourish. She had a sense of what was fair and just; she gave freely of her love and served in a manner both responsible and respectful. The membership responded to her in like manner. Highlights of her four year term incuded: Attending the 50th Jubilee Youth Aliyah Conference
where she met Recha Freier who “Personified the strength and devotion that made Youth Aliyah one of the greatest humanitarian movements in the world,” serving as a WIZO delegate to the “U.N. End of Decade for Women Conference” in Nairobi, at which positive inroads were made despite daily experiences of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, and organizing the “Celebration 70” tour in Israel. “I have always believed that we are truly blessed to live in Canada, this great democracy where we are free to promote the ideals of Judaism and Zionism, while remaining devoted loyal Canadians. We have two countries to love and serve – Canada and Israel,” she said. ORAH Magazine Winter 2016 [ 48 ]

organization, and the places in Canada where they lived,” she said. “I found travelling to different centres and meeting thousands of new people to be both exciting and rewarding.”
When she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1959, she looked for an organization that focused on these sentiments, and found it in Canadian HadassahWIZO. “There is no question that CHW has played an enormous role in my life – in fact, radically influenced its direction,” she said.
Naomi brought many of her personal strengths to the Presidency, especially the skill of communicating with others. She had a solid background as a fundraiser, writer and speaker. She

E-FUNDRAISING:
SUCCESS STORIES FROM CHW CENTRES
Earlier this year, Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) hosted the first ever CHW Bake Challenge. The CHW Bake Challenge was a new, fun and exciting way to get our members and friends involved in a peer-to-peer FUNraising initiative. Not only did we bake some delicious treats, but we raised some dough too! Marcia Glick, President of CHW KitchenerWaterloo Centre, was the master pâtissière, and led all participants by raising the most money for the CHW Bake Challenge. Marcia had a plan for her Bake Challenge strategy, and seemingly executed it to perfection. Marcia said, “I started off with a small goal. I didn’t think I would get such amazing support. I offered to match donations, up to $100 per donation. I also said I would send all of my supporters the recipe I baked.”
The CHW Bake Challenge couldn’t have been such a success without all of our amazing donors, and especially all of the incredible bakers who reached out to friends and family in order to encourage them to support this initiative, and our sweet tooth. Participants created their own online fundraising page – using Luminate Online’s TeamRaiser software – and asked friends and family to sponsor them online. The peer-to-peer fundraising tool allowed participants to tap into their social circles to gain support and encourage others to join the Bake Challenge. The e-fundraising tool gives each individual the opportunity to send solicitation emails, thank you letters, and follow their own fundraising goals.
“I felt so good when so many friends from all over started to respond. It encouraged me and I reached out to more and more people. In the end I had a big amount to match but I did it happily and it was a great ego boost knowing so many friends and relatives had my back,” she said.
The support shown throughout the Bake Challenge was incredible; everyone came together, baked some yummy treats and contributed to building a better community, and to helping the countless women, children and families who depend on CHW projects each and every day.

The weekend kicked off with a welcome address led by CHW National President, Claudia Goldman, and CHW National Executive Director, Alina Ianson. The address set the tone for the weekend, which emphasized the importance of our work, as well as tactics we need to put in place to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of charitable giving. For instance, CHW introduced our brand new online intranet committee system, which will streamline our committees interactions and productivity. The afternoon session was capped off by a brilliant presentation to the
about effective ways of using social media to help support our cause. #GreatWorkTeam #CHW. I think we’re getting the hang of it!
Quite possibly the highlight of the weekend was the dinner on Saturday night. Well, not the dinner exactly, but rather what came afterwards. Following our meal, we had a very special guest speaker, Niki Raz, who flew in from Israel for the occasion. Niki is an inspirational young woman, who for years was a victim of domestic abuse. Her life was in turmoil, and she thought there was no way out. That is, until she sought refuge at a WIZO Women’s Shelter. Her life has since turned around, and she now lives happily with her three children. Hearing Niki’s story was a moving experience for everyone in attendance. We hear stories about the great work we do all

the time, but it is so rare, and so incredibly eye-opening to hear one of our success stories first hand. It was surely an evening to remember. The following morning, activities began with another exciting guest, Jordan Kerbel. Jordan is the Deputy Director of Communications and Advocacy Training at the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. He shared a lot of his wonderful stories and vast experience with us, all while teaching us how to become effective media communicators. The weekend was a huge success. Every time we get so many of our organization’s great minds together, incredible things happen; it truly was an incredible think-tank weekend. With so many smart, creative, and dedicated women leading CHW, our future looks brighter than ever!

Connections Tea
Over the winter months, we have had several events with about twenty ladies out to each, with speakers like Dan Balaban, Greengate Power, speaking on “Improving the world/ environment”, Sharon Butala, author, speaking about the launch in Tel Aviv of the Hebrew translation of her collection of stories on Saskatchewan, and then gathering for a wind-up potluck. Lots of learning, socializing and fun!
On May 3rd Maison Senior Living hosted our annual Connections Tea, where we had over 40 ladies (and a few men) come for an afternoon of scrumptious baking and schmoozing. Elsie Fawcett, a talented 15 year old, entertained with singing a few of her own songs. Thank you to Dorothy Hanson and all the volunteers for baking and serving.
Keys for Hope A group of over 20 people gathered at the home of George and Lily Fixler for an evening of music by Deb Finkleman and a presentation by Marilyn Libin and Joe Levy on their visit to the new operating rooms at Hadassah Hospital.

CHW VICTORIA Purim Party
On March 20th, CHW celebrated Purim with a Tea Social at the lovely home of Octav Brandon. A delightful collection of Persians, a cute Mexican, a famous French painter, and a Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland arrived at Octav’s door. For our afternoon entertainment, Josie Davidson had us laughing and singing to an Esther Shpiel (a new version of Fiddler on the Roof ) that we all thoroughly enjoyed. Our narrator Raisa Balagur kept us on track with the story while Esther Laredo gave us several rousing renditions of a very unique Moroccan shout. There is no doubt in my mind that any deer (or Haman) passing by Octav’s house will have been scared away for a good long time. If the entertainment and
good company weren’t enough, we were also well fed with a delicious array of finger food treats and different Hamantashen pastries. It was a delightful afternoon and we must do it again next year!
Downton Abbey Tea
On May 10th, fifteen CHW ladies enjoyed a Downton Abbey afternoon tea hosted at the charming home of Josie Davidson. It was a beautiful sunny day, and for those who arrived early, Josie treated her guests to a tour of her garden, her flowers, ducks and honey bees. The Davidson living room was fashioned into an English drawing room and we settled ourselves around a large parlour table filled with all sorts of delectable savouries and baked goodies. Of notable mention were Josie’s scones,
created from her Downton Abbey cookbook, her homemade jam, and a beautiful cake shaped like an English abbey. We also enjoyed drinking our cups of tea from a beautiful collection of bone china teacups, the likes of which I hadn’t seen since Ana Porzecanski brought her beautiful bone china teacup collection to the Windsor Tea Room for one of our Membership Teas. We had a lovely afternoon visiting and laughing with one another and one memorable comment was, “We should do this again! It was wonderful to dress up in clothes we don’t often get to wear!” And it was a lovely way to fundraise for our valuable CHW projects! Todah rabah to Josie for such a lovely idea!
