The Ocarina, a musical wind instrument, is also known as the Sweet Potato. The LP (long-playing) record was invented by Paul Goldmark in 1948. The LP is not dead yet: more than 10 million LPs are sold every year. The longest song to reach number one on the Billboard charts on LP was “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” by Meatloaf, the shortest: “Stay” by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs. At the first Grammy Awards, held on 4 May 1959, Domenico Modugno beat out Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee for the Record of the Year, with “Volare.”

from the top j o h n k ay e - p u b l i s h e r During one of the greatest recessions in recent history, the light in my head went off to create a magazine that would benefit the art & entertainment industry and create a platform of affordability to all who were passionate about their endeavors. Reaching out to the community at large with unbelievable rates, fantastic graphic design, innovation, inspiration, and information for artists to promote themselves without exorbitant prices, seemed like a great idea. I still believe it to be an honorable endeavor. Now in our 3rd edition, we are reaching further, wider, and deeper into the various industries of the arts than anticipated.

Nowhere can anyone secure full page - full color advertising in a high quality magazine that reaches the masses like CIA – for a fraction of the cost of what is normally charged. We keep the cost down by building an online publication that anyone with a mouse can click on for free with the option to purchase that issue in print on demand. Our intention is to one day supply every high profile business in the perspective industries with our hard copy at no charge. Consider the advertising you can do for less than $1.50 a day to reach people and agencies who have never heard of you as an artist. I’d like to hear from you if you’re looking for a way to connect to 1,000’s of people interested in what you do. Advertisers, in our experience of producing high-end, award winning magazines, we know our quality of material we put out would run between $5000 to $20,000 a month for full color/ full page in most entertainment issues. Our rates are a fraction of that cost! Just ask for our Media Kit. Once again we set out to bring you the best in all facets of creation and inspiration. Individuals worthy of being seen will always grace the pages as the Creative Independent Artists they are. Share our link with those you feel could benefit from our articles, artists, and advertisers. We promote YOUR passions. Help us promote YOU !!!

ou work faithfully to develop your art. You invest in all aspects of your personal appearance and stage presence. You surround yourself with a smart business team. You network to accrue your industry contacts. In short, you devote endless energy to your career. But what does your online web presence do for you?

This scenario isn’t theoretical. It happens everyday when artists don’t provide the special images required in a promotion project. Don’t get left out! Allow media and marketing teams access to your high-res images and other crucial press materials they need to help promote you.

In today’s fast-paced entertainment industry your website or electronic press kit (EPK) is paramount in bookings, media coverage, management and PR. Consider it your online business card. If your digital presence has what industry leaders need --you have a leg up. If not, you can get left behind in the fast track web environment.

Here’s What You Need

A Sad Scenario

In addition to all the graphic charm and beauty of your website or EPK you need to be sure you have your bases covered in terms of necessary content. Here are the must-haves: • 3-5 high-resolution jpg photos (at least one image should be a headshot) • On-line bio (short and long versions preferred) • PDF bio for download (short and long versions preferred) • Streaming online video • Acclaim/testimonials (both online text and PDF versions preferred) • Mp3s (applicable for musicians) • Booking and contact info • These materials should all be accessible online 24/7

It’s late on a Friday afternoon and an agent calls needing a full-page ad for a magazine ASAP. The designer or art director begins right away, searching for print-ready, high-resolution photos of the agency artists for the layout process. The agent suggests that the design team go online to quickly download the required images. The designer looks at various artists’ online materials and downloads high-res images where they are available. The deadline is quickly approaching. If an artist doesn’t have the proper images online the designer is forced to leave their image off the ad. Simply put, artists with appropriate photos make it into a high profile magazine ad. Artists without the right images are omitted. PA G PAE G8E 8

Your online site or EPK should load quickly and look great. The average visitor spends about 2 seconds looking at a web page before they decide to stay or hit the back button. Design is important to reinforce that crucial first impression.

or industry-generated testimonials. After all, your credibility is reinforced when someone else says you are talented. These quotes are appreciated by writers who need to pull together an article quickly, required by managers and agents considering talent, and sought after by talent buyers.

Down-loadable, high-resolution press photos are absolutely essential in any digital press kit or website. So what are high-resolution images anyway? These are 300 dpi (dots per inch) and appropriately sized (say 5 x 7” or 8 x 10”). Usually high-resolution images are jpgs and at least 500 kilobytes in file size. 1 megabyte to 10 This acclaim should appear as online text in an excerpted megabytes files are preferred. taken center stage. To fast track your online presence, embrace video as well! Make sure your video is high quality. A bad video is still worse than no video at all. If the video does not reflect you in a positive light, do not post it. Once you have footage you are eager for the world to see be sure that it is available as streaming video (no downloads required). Go with a universal video format like flash or HTML5 video, carefully avoiding Quicktime (not-so PC-friendly) or Windows Media (not-so-Mac-friendly). If you are using YouTube to broadcast your video do not link to YouTube, rather embed the video right into your site or EPK. The goal is always to keep visitors on your website with you, not to land them at YouTube where they can go astray and forget all about your press materials. To the same end, be sure that before your video is embedded you have unchecked “show suggested videos when the video finishes”. Unless, that is, you want your breathtaking video to be followed by dancing kittens or burping babies.

Set Up An Attachment-Free Relationship It’s best to keep your digital press materials online, easily accessible for review and download, 24/7. Email is immediate and effective in self-promotion but be careful about sending email attachments of your EPK or digital press materials. Why? Firstly, when you compress your files in a folder you force someone to open that folder --uncertain of what’s inside. That’s no way to make friends! Virus, spyware, rogue software, malware and other nasty things are all worries recipients face when they open any attachment. Allow your press materials to arrive in a worry-free package. Keep them on a live website or EPK and just email the link to that location. Allow the industry lead to download them one file at a time, as they wish.

Secondly, press materials can be big. A folder with a few high resolution photos, a bio and other items can easily add up to more megabytes than most inboxes will accept. In that case, you may email the materials but they may never arrive. That’s another way to lose an Avoid Contact SPAM Sports industry friend. I just celebrated one year of performing at the Las Vegas Hilton, in ‘NUNSENSE’ as Sister Robert Anne. This is the most comedic lead I have ever been given, and it is such a blast to sing, dance, act, and listen to laughter every day! I have credits for film, television, and radio, along with an extensive history in theater. I have been a lead in Las Vegas production shows for more than 8 years. One of my favorite LV production shows was an original musical called ‘Tease’. We played ‘strippers’ and were dubbed one of Vegas’s sexiest shows, by E! Entertainment and the Travel Channel, and aired in reruns on both channels for several years. So if I look familiar, perhaps you were up late one night... This magazine is all about passion, and mine is alive in many areas. This year I was inducted into the Las Vegas Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for work I did as a youngster in a fantastic 9 piece horn band that recorded originals, and played at Disneyland and Disneyworld. You may have seen me at the Tropicana Hotel in LV all through the 80’s in Actress • Singer • Dancer • Musician an act called ‘Taylor & Taylor’, singing and • Bass Player • Songwriter • Voice-Over Talent playing bass. After a career performing in nightclubs and lounges all over the world for more than 20 years, I still perform regularly in ‘copy’ bands doing everything from Lady Gaga to Joan Jett to Diana Krall.

Coming out of the “Ramona Room” at the Last Frontier into the “Gay 90’s Lounge” in 1953 , they became an overnight sensation, attracting SRO (standing room only) crowds for weeks, ushering in the fabulous era of top name lounge acts. George Schlatter, producer of Laugh-In, at the 75th Anniversary celebration of Las Vegas Entertainment announced “The greatest act ever to play Vegas was The Mary Kaye Trio.” As a Vegas booking agent in the 1950’s, he recalls the Trios engagements at The Last Frontier; “by the third night you couldn’t move! They’re the biggest hit on the Strip.” Because at that point there was no Rickles there was no Louis Prima and there was no Shecky Green. The Trio became a favorite of the stars. On any given night, celebrities like Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jr., Betty Hutton, Milton Beryl and Liberace rubbed shoulders Norman Kaye, Mary Kaye, Bob Hope, Frank Ross with regulars at the groups show.” Schlatter continued “The Mary Kaye Trio changed the history of Las Vegas. Pete Barbutti says, “ Frank Ross of The Mary Kaye Trio was the guy who really started lounge comedy with his off-the-cuff routines. Shecky Green, Don Rickles, and “The Rat Pack” all found out what premise worked, by watching Frank Ross.” He would react to whatever was going on in the room, whether it was a celebrity, A dish dropped, bartenders, waitresses.— everyone was part of the routine. Mary Kaye, with a beautiful face and hour-glass figure, was a phenomenal singer, equal to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. In 1961, Mary was inducted into the Musicians Hall Of Fame by Louis B. Judy Garland, one of her most enthusiastic fans would stand up and yell at the audience to “shut up” when Mary started to sing. Glyscian has melded loud, heavy guitars with pretty melodies and mixed punk sensibilities with a sharp sense of songwriting. A loud and fast style of heavy metal, they have their roots in the hard-rocking rock band tendencies, choosing to amplify with the speed of punk rock. Combined with extremely dynamic vocal melodies, intense lyrics, they harness that energy and in the process, produce a raging sound. Their first studio album, to be released Summer 2012, will be produced by the fabulously talented, giant stud, David Allen (Black Label Society, Robin Trower, Reverend Horton Heat, Stryper, Fishbone). Bi lly N unn It was the song, “A Walk on the Wild Side”, by “The Late Great Legendary Jimmy Smith” on a Hammond B3 Organ. The sound of that B3 Organ excited Billy and he started playing in his senior year, at Hutch Tech Senior High School in Buffalo New York. He knew even then that the future for him was to be a professional musician. Today Billy Nunn is among the most gifted and versatile B3 Organist and Keyboardist.

At the age of twenty, he took a job with another jazz legend “The Late Great Johnny Lytle”. (Billy recorded 3 albums with Mr. Lytle.) One year later, after hearing Billy play The Hammond B3, he was off to Japan with The Softtones, recorded and wrote some songs with the Softtones. Billy met both Lytle and The Softtones at “Jan’s Supper Club” in Buffalo, New York, owned by his father, (Mr. William Nunn Sr. CEO/Founder of Mo Do Records) where many legends of today performed. The music Billy recorded with Mo Do Records back in the 70’s can still be heard today in one of Tyler Perry’s movies (Why Did I Get Married Too? “) and Forrest Whitaker’s (“Our Family Wedding). Billy Nunn can be heard in casinos and clubs in Las Vegas, on the radio in the song recorded with Rick James “Mary Jane” (Billy Nunn Co-Writer), and albums, “Come Get it” and “Bustin’ Out”. Before Rick James’ untimely death, Rick asked Billy to help him get the Stone City Band back together. Keeping the promise, you can now see Billy’s performance as “The Original Stone City Band” takes the FUNK into the future.

Eccentric to international stages, Joe Black takes to shows in an almost cartoon-esque theatrical assault, sweeping the audiences through an array of show tunes, ballads, and a rather varied but fine selection of morally questionable entertainment. Joe Black, or Mister Black, if you’d prefer? Is no stranger to the ridiculous, the sometimes disturbing, or the downright shocking world of entertainment. As well as regularly treading the boards of the sell out sensation that is the worlds biggest fetish club Torture Garden and international tours with the critically acclaimed Ministry of Burlesque, he also hosts his own sell out residency in the lavish Edwardian Kings Theatre, in Hampshire. An entertaining and inspiring cabaret artist, with a constant stream of theatrical endeavours across the UK, europe and internationally. HILLBILLY HERALD ANNOUNCES SPRING TOUR supporting SLASH and STEEL PANTHER HERALD’S TOUR KICKS OFF in Los Angeles MARCH 17, 2012 Los Angeles, California-March 5, 2012- Staying true to Rock n’ Roll, Hillbilly Herald is bringing back “The Show” with in-your-face guitar slingin’, raspy voiced singin’, drum ringin’ rock n roll and taking the US by storm. Packing in world-renown venues like the Viper Room, Roxy Theater, and the House of Blues, the band, fronted by Jimmy Herald (vocals) seems unstoppable. This spring they kick it up notch rolling out a mid-west tour with dates that include opening for the iconic Grammy Winner Slash and his band featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators and several with metal maniacs Steel Panther. The band’s success has been largely the result of Herald’s balls-out attitude towards rock-n-roll and his stick-toitiveness and this tour is based on his determination to move the group forward. The current lineup consists of Mark “The Cat” Hill (Guitar), Adam Wolf (bass), Hawaiian Brian (Guitar), and Louie “Sea Biscuit” Riel (Drums). “Every member of this band has a great talent and heart and everyone who came into this band threw everything they thought they knew out the window, and put their work ethic first,” explains Herald. Herald-who grew revering Guns N’ Roses-is honored to be going on tour opening shows for his icon, saying, “The first time I heard Appetite For Destruction it changed my life.” The two met while Herald was working as a bartender at Hamburger Hamlet in Sherman Oaks. “Slash would come in, and we’d talk about music. I’d never sung a note in my life and Slash had never seen me play but he could see my passion and he encouraged me to go for it.” A year later Herald’s making music, gigging all over LA and passing out his demos. He reconnected with Slash at the 2010 Sunset Strip Music Festival and filled him in on the band’s progress and plans for the future. The two met up again over dinner, and Herald says, “Now try to grasp this, here you are sitting next to someone who, as a kid, growing up in Indiana, you emulated and watched every move, and now that very same rock star is sitting next to you telling you, ‘Your band are about all the right things and it’s going to happen.’ It was the most surreal and gratifying moment of my life.” “There’s nothing more encouraging than having one of the best guitar players in rock n roll agree to put on his tour. We’re still trying to take it all in,” says Herald.

J ENNY STAMP ER Hey y’all! My name is Jenny Stamper and I am a singer-songwriter. I have been on stage for over fifteen years with a female acoustic duo known as Justus. We continue to perform throughout Southern Ohio and are eagerly planning a trip to Nashville in April 2012 to kick start the release of our new CD, “Diamonds on the Water.” I was raised in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. My hometown is Hindman, which is the county seat for Knott county. Of course, I’ve had many influences throughout the years. And yes, there were the “hair band” days. I was told many times to turn down the Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Aerosmith that was blaring from my bedroom. Although I still love those bands, I cut my teeth on bluegrass. When I heard Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, or Larry Sparks playing throughout our family home, well, I knew Mommy was having a good day. Later, my influences became Wynonna Judd, Bonnie Raitt, and other strong, talented women that had “made it in the business”. I especially enjoy artists who sing about my beloved Kentucky home. After several years performing original and cover music, I am excited to focus more on song writing and sharing my stories with a larger audience. I am proud to be a member of the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International and look forward to additional networking with other professionals. I am seeking opportunities in the music industry, to include placement of music in film and television.

ju d ge jack s on ban d If you’re a living, breathing rock and roll diehard with a pulse just about anywhere across this great country of ours—no one embodies that drive, determination and lifestyle better than JUDGE JACKSON, whose balls-to-the-wall classic take on a noble tradition is the soundtrack to your life. For more than a decade, through five albums, a thousand shows and tours with Gov’t Mule, Doobie Bros., Cheap Trick, Buckcherry, Army of Anyone, UFO and Joe Bonamassa, among others, this hard-driving quartet’s music can be heard on a variety of TV shows, including the Super Bowl, NHL and NBA playoffs, and NASCAR. JUDGE JACKSON began in 1995, when vocalist/lyricist McTavish, who came to town from Canada, where he once played in a band that featured Shania Twain as back-up vocalist, joined guitarist/songwriter Jackson in L.A. to tirelessly play the town’s club circuit. By 1998, the band released its debut album, followed by a second CD, 8068. Drummer Garcia joined the group after the release of JUDGE JACKSON’s third CD, One Diamond, which marked the band’s multimedia breakthrough, with “Amazing” receiving airplay across the U.S., while “Times Been Changing” was featured on NBC’s popular comedy My Name Is Earl. And while they’ve been the best-kept secret on the L.A. rock scene, JUDGE JACKSON is gaining recognition. The group’s last album, Drive was named “Best CD of the Year” in the 5th Annual All Access Magazine Awards. Since then, the group has added bassist Brian James, formerly of The Rocking Scoundrels and Stone, to replace longtime member Ryan Rogers. Judge Jackson is currently in the studio working on the next record, playing dates with Tesla and wrapping up an exclusive music video production and interview series for schools across Canada and the US.

r o y ce nels on Royce has lived for the stage since her first taste as a young toddler, tip toeing in tap shoes in front of a few hundred people. However, she discovered her true passion for singing as a 10 year old at summer camp belting out tunes on the stage for the first time. “It combined my two favorite things: the stage and a rush I could only feel from singing my heart out,” Royce says as she reminisces. By the age of 13, she was working in the studio with songwriter/producer Karen Tobin, and in 2004 she won a Golden Globe for singing background vocals on a song sung by Mick Jagger for the movie “Alfie” called “Old Habits Die Hard”. She went on to record demos and back-up vocals for many producers, songwriters, and artists including Dave Stewart, Lois Blaisch (writer of Tiffany’s 1988 #1 hit single “Could’ve Been”), Mick Jagger, Sheryl Crow, and Candyman 187. To date, she has performed in venues all over Los Angeles including The House of Blues, The Viper Room, The Roxy, and The Whiskey-A-Go-Go. She has also fronted her fair share of bands and been in few girl groups (most recently BG4 produced by Bobby Jones and Shane Sparks of “So You Think You Can Dance”). She is currently writing for other artists while also embarking on a Pop/Rock solo career cowriting her newest originals with songwriter Peter Hanna (writer of “Hollywood Girl” for the Hollywood Insider and Mitchel Musso’s new record “Get Away”.)

l o u is prim a jr. Long before Brian Setzer’s “Jump, Jive an’ Wail,” David Lee Roth’s “Just A Gigolo,” and the motion picture SWINGERS, paving the way was the originator, the great Louis Prima. Louis Prima, Jr. brings his famous father’s music back to life, with an energetic performance and the unique, first hand perspective of being the son of a music legend. Louis Prima was the original Sicilian “King of Swing.” His exuberant personality and energetic, raucous show, sold out venues across the nation for 50 years. Louis Prima and the Witnesses became a legendary landmark during the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Like most High Rollers and celebrities, even the famed Rat Pack were regulars at the “Wildest Show” in Vegas. With hits like “Jump, Jive, an’ Wail,” “Angelina,” “Just a Gigolo,” “That Old Black Magic,” “Buona Sera,” “When You’re Smiling” and “Sing, Sing, Sing,” the shows remained sold out for years. Louis Prima Jr. performs an electric tribute to his father’s popular Vegas show. In the vein of his father, Prima Jr. has put together a show with a swinging and rocking band that will “jive” you crazy with the feel of the “Wildest Show” in Vegas. Louis Prima Jr.’s debut CD will be released worldwide in June 2012 through Warrior Records/Universal Music.

MAR A & TH E B I G ROCKS TAR S FU N 8 0 ’ s ROCK COVE R B A ND Sure, Mara & The Big Rockstars will play some Journey and Bon Jovi – because they’re awesome! But they also play tunes like ‘Final Countdown,’ ‘Africa,’ ‘Kickstart My Heart,’ and “Eye Of The Tiger” to keep audiences on the dance floor and at the bar. What sets them apart from other 80s party bands is not silly costumes or schticky dialogue, but completely live instruments with five-part vocal harmonies, and a can’t-take-your-eyes-off-her frontwoman, most often compared to Janis Joplin and Nancy Wilson. Audiences of all ages follow their roaming party from venue to venue all over Los Angeles, bringing the rock hits to clubs, festivals and private/corporate parties. Also available as an acoustic solo, duo, or trio for more intimate engagements. Before the cover band, Mara was an award-winning solo singer/songwriter chasing a record deal in LA. A native New Yorker, she jump-started her career playing on the streets and in the pubs of Scotland. She found herself playing five packed nights a week for locals and International backpackers, promoting her original albums. Invitations for live radio appearances and performances as a featured artist at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival kept her on the move, and she returned to tour in the UK for the following three summers. Her performances gained national media coverage on Scottish television, radio and worldwide webcasts. In the states or overseas, 80s covers or originals, Mara continues her commitment to making a difference by donating time and performances to support Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s Research charities.

ji lla ro berts Performing from the Emmy Awards Show to the Ryman Theater in Nashville, casinos on the Las Vegas strip, USO tours, and touring productions across the globe, Jilla is one of those performers you remember! She blends her own powerful yet sultry vocal style to big band swing and traditional jazz, blues and rock. One reviewer wrote of her that, “Jilla provided The Voice, that rare spill-the-guts, cry-out type of singing that most singers seem afraid to try.” Early in her career, Jilla sang many national commercials and soundtracks airing on NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, and the WB. She was the voice of Regis and Kathy Lee, Candid Camera, Dharma and Greg, Hawaiian Air, Rosie O’Donnell, and Must See TV to mention a few. Her mother, Jilla Webb (Sr.) lead vocalist for the Harry James Orchestra, passed on the gift of song to Jilla. Recently, Jilla recorded and released a CD of her mother’s charts from the Harry James Orchestra that is available on ITunes. She is proud to carry on the legacy her mother started, and enjoys being able to help keep that “Great American Songbook” alive! She is currently working on a vocal and entertainment blog at www.breathesingconnect.com, and has teamed with guitar virtuoso Kurt McKinney. THE SOUND REVOLUTION IN MOTION... AIR, Great Gumbo and the New Revolution!

By Glenn campbell

T

he offer came simply via a friendly phone call: “You’ve got to try this..!” It was the voice of Damon Gold, pioneer operator of AIR Virtual Wireless Show Control technologies, introducing perhaps the most compelling revolution in digital audio production since the digital revolution itself:

Perfected wireless show control. When he explained that he had been mixing, multi-track recording, running HD video slaves, MIDI and DMX controlling shows- all WIRELESSLY on tablet computers that control a central mainframe console- I was intrigued. Over time, we’ve all developed our own ideas about when technological advances might sum in a single product that is capable of total wireless show control (controls audio, multi-track recording & playback, lights, MIDI and HD Video, etc)... and is yet stable, affordable, compact, lightweight, large format (up to 72 I/O) and sounds like transparent analog.

The age of Virtual Wireless Total Show Control is certainly here!

But nothing I was reading in mainstream tech publications had prepared me for the immediate viability of a wireless, total show controller/mixing console. And I must confess, I was comfortable with my skepticism. On my way to Damon’s studio (Big Water Studios, Lake Tahoe, California- big plug!),small waves began lapping against those internal shores of doubt. PA G PAE G66 E 66

C I A A RT I ST S.CO M

The concept of the AIR Consoles are to eliminate the massive ‘Snake Cables...’ Reason and experience were warning... “Hey, what about risks inherent with Virtual Wireless show control..?”: I. Stability A. Computer crashes? (Computer Crash Syndrome) B. RF interference? (WIreless Audio Drop-out and/or Interference)

C. How long has it been tested? (Real world touring; diverse conditions)II. Work Flow A. Where are the faders? (Altered Work Flow; faders optional) B. Wireless operation? (No required fixed position for FOH; go anywhere!)

C. How easy is it to operate? III. Quality A. How does it sound? IV. Affordability A. It does it all- but how could I afford it? Fortunately, I’ve known Damon long enough to know to hang-in there. I was not disappointed. Only minutes later standing in the isolated tech suite of BWS, I immediately recognized the unique digital audio quality seemingly produced by this wireless tablet computer! It’s warmth, accuracy and transparency immediately inspired memories of listening experiences I believed only analog could ever provide. Needless to say, the rabbit-hole opened right up and swallowed me whole. Many questions, answers, doubts and realizations flowed like flash-floods, cutting new neuro-pathways. Some 20plus months later, I occupy a comfortable new paradigm that offers it’s own advantages and rewards: The age of professional Virtual Wireless Total Show Control is certainly here. In fact, to those who presently utilize AIR products... ‘the Virtual Wireless revolution’ is long since yesterday’s news: I. Stability issues have long been resolved. II. Work Flow issues have long been optimized for efficiency and comfort. III. AIR sound quality is agreeably second to none.

The so u n d re v o l u tio n

IV. Affordability... apples to apples: AIR products are far less expensive than competing brands, even when comparing just a mixing console(other brand) to AIR TOTAL SHOW CONTROLLERS. V. Last but not least, sound quality and cost-saving advantages are already in the bank for various engineers and artists who have made the leap.

Still, the number of people utilizing AIR is yet small enough that you may relax any apprehension about missing opportunity to gain the technological advantage. There is still time to become the new guru of Virtual Wireless mixing and show control before AIR becomes as common place as oxygen and even the local babysitter uses an AIR Console. WIth that comfort in mind, allow me to introduce the company who has pioneered Virtual Wireless Total Show Control with AIR Consoles and satisfy curiosities toward the, as yet, mysterious acronym A. I. R. : Audio Integrated Research, better known as AIR for it’s transparent digital audio quality and wireless (go anywhere!) advantages for work flow, is a relatively new company with deep roots. AIR was officially formed in 2010 by four friends with special information, common interests and over 100 years of collective experience in the entertainment industry. They formed simple goals, some of which include: Raise the faders on the good news... Virtual Wireless Total Show Control is no longer science fiction. Offer revolutionary advantages with products that are affordable for everyone. Make friends and have fun! A revolutionary threshold has been crossed and offers possibilities for a new equality amidst all classes of artists and production. With state-of-the-art AIR products, any entity (known, yet-unknown, corporate, broadcast, House of Worship, etc) may produce the highest quality entertainment with compelling opportunities for savings. At the heart of this revolution is the successful alliance between AIR and strategic partner, developer Robert (Bob) Lentini (RML Labs), creator of the hand-written code that is

central to success of AIR products and services. Since joining forces with RML Labs, the sister companies have been cooking up a remarkable recipe for mutual success... resembling Gumbo. (cont’d on page 68) Perhaps at times lacking striking visual appeal, the AIR/ RML alliance is nonetheless a true masterpiece made with quality ingredients such as heaps of respect, many pinches of knowledge and large spoonfuls of passion; stirred carefully yet vigorously over time!

The result: Great Gumbo and the new revolution. Serving size: Earth. Now let’s take a closer look at AIR Consoles and the phrase ‘Total Show Controller’. The moniker ‘Total Show Controller’ is critical to illuminating the extensive features and values of AIR products- especially when attempting to compare with other products/ brands. Far more than just a single mixing console (other brands), every AIR Console includes 25 complete, full-featured mixing consoles built-in (with separate head amps for each). Think about this for a moment..! Now take a few moments to examine the diagram below to help you visualize what an AIR Console looks like when set up for a live stage performance: First, when examining the diagram you’ll see that audio does not actually travel through wireless channels- a common, initial mis-perception. Note instead, audio is passed directly in and out of the AIR mainframe located stage left. Wireless Tablets are utilized to control AIR mainframe audio at the side stage location.

enabling for the first time 24 full-featured Monitor mixes with independent stereo outputs. Each console offers individual gate, comp, 5 band EQ, effects (and more) available on every channel. Engineers can now create exciting, effective Monitor mixes for each individual artist. And because of separate head amps, no struggle for gain with FOH. Sound check is completely different now. WIth wireless tablets, both FOH and MON engineers walk the stage, often able to adjust levels before requests are made. Effective sound checks can be done in far less time- with far greater detail. To my knowledge, there is no other mixing console or combination thereof that can match AIR’s 24 Virtual Monitor Consoles Integrated Work Flow for quality, performance or efficiency. AIR’s ‘twenty-five (25) virtual consoles-in-one’ architecture is only the beginning of extensive advantages and value to be found in AIR Total Show Control Consoles.

Every feature listed below comes standard with every AIR Console: • Built-in Multi-track recording • Built-in Multi-track play back/ immediate Virtual Sound Check • Complete DAW workstation

This new wireless work-flow for mixing eliminates the need for a snake or even a fixed FOH position (though a wired, fixed position is always optional). AIR Console operators (FOH & MON engineers) enjoy complete wireless freedom to move anywhere to get the right mix for each individual artist and the house.

• HD Video playback (x 8 slaves)

Of the 25 virtual consoles-in-one, AIR Console #1 is always dedicated for the Front of House mix.

• VST, Effects Plug-ins support

AIR Consoles #2-25 are dedicated for Monitor mixes,

• Wireless control

• DMX Recorded Show Control • 7.1 Surround Mixing • Up to 72 Channels (except the AIR Lite X24)

C I A A RT I ST S.CO M

The so u n d re v o l u tio n

The above features eliminate the need for expensive, nonintegrated external hardware and software products.

• Built-in 48 Channel Multi-track recording

The following detail is a list of components that are NO LONGER NEEDED once you switch to AIR products:

• Built-in 48 Channel Multi-track play back/ immediate Virtual Sound Check

• Monitor Console

• Complete DAW workstation

• Additional Monitor Consoles (up to 23 more..:-)

• HD Video playback (x 8 slaves)

• FOH Snake

• DMX Recorded Show Control

• Splits for Recording

• 7.1 Surround Mixing

• External Effects racks

•VST, Effects Plug-ins support

• Side Car Expansion for increasing I/O over 48 channels

•6 AUX Sends

• Up to eight (8) HD Projectors

•Practically unlimited Scenes & Automation

• DAW workstation or Recording Platform

•Wireless control

• Up to 3 more personnel required to move large format mixing consoles

If we were to purchase all components included in AIR Consoles individually, the cost would exceed $1.2 million USDand it would require a semi-trailer to haul it around.

• Thousands of pounds, transportation and costs

Now... with whom should AIR compare?

The exception in feature offerings in the AIR family line is the AIR Lite X24. Considered a ‘Limited Show Controller’, the AIR Lite X24 is an ultra-portable console that offers certain feature sets of AIR X-series but with limited channels for recording, playback and show control. Now let’s jump to a most important consideration...How much do AIR Consoles cost? Finally... a drawback, right? Well, better read on... Because, as it turns out, AIR Consoles offer huge cost saving advantages. Let’s do some math. AIR X48 suggested MSRP high is $39,950; MSRP low is $34,950. Let’s go with the MSRP high figure: And measure what features and benefits AIR provides for this cost... • Twenty-five (25) 48 Channel Mixing Consoles-in-one • 48 Inputs/48 OUTPUTS

The Yamaha PM5D...? +/- $70,000... for a single, FOH console? The Midas XL8..? +/- $340,000... for a single FOH console? Quick math says the cost of the FOH snake and splitters alone would make the AIR X48 a bargain. Simple math is all that’s needed to quantify the pinnacle AIR advantage: AIR products offer amazing savings opportunities. For any entity that utilizes mixing consoles, recording, playback, virtual sound check, large channel counts, stage lighting control, etc for professional entertainment productions, AIR offers the greatest advantages for achieving both quality and savings- together. Welcome to the future: yesterday. Visit: www.airconsoles.com Inquire: demos or information You can see for yourself. Maybe it’s time you got your own fresh helping of AIR, Gumbo and the new revolution! •

THE STORM An Original Pop-Rock Musical THE STORM, a new teen musical, is the latest production at the NoHo Arts Center in North Hollywood. With lyrics and writing by Kate Nelson, musical direction by Steve Bauman, and direction by Phyllis Larrymore-Kelly, we have a great venue for new talent, and more than impressive musical numbers. Crystal (Jade Bates) wants to go to the dance at Club Twister, but mom Wanda (Ronna Jones) is skeptical because of an impending storm warning. After much pleading, Wanda agrees and sure enough the storm hits. But this isn’t just a normal storm. This one creates an emergency situation and devastates the entire area. Think the New Orleans disaster. Combine this with teen angst of one girl thinking another girl is taking her boyfriend, decisions on the teen’s futures, general life choices, and you have THE STORM. Several vocal performances are worth mentioning here. Ronna Jones has several musical numbers that set her apart with a fantastic, warm voice. Her character is thoroughly expressed during her vocal numbers, and you sit up and take notice when she sings “Defend Yourself”. Jaki Nelson as Elle, and Royce as one of the concert performers give commendable performances and are notable. THE STORM has a huge cast. And, several different performers will play the same part during the run of this production. Most are young and just starting out. Some have skill only maturity can bring to the stage. There is reason to see THE STORM to see rising local talent with a live band and music by Steve Bauman that is credible and definitely appreciated. Pray For Pay or Play For Free? A National Comedy by Sher Bach

I

t’s a Tuesday night on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Clubs are lit up, their marquees displaying a myriad of bands, most of them not yet a household name, and occasionally a more well known group of musicians will return to grace the stages where they first got their start. There’s usually always a guest list, but everyone else, the tourists, the rich kids from the Valley and beyond and other non “regulars” will fork over their $5 or $10 to get in and check out the new blood. Add to that price another $10 $20 for a drink, and the night could get expensive for some patrons. It’s rare, in this day and age, to find an A&R rep or anyone, much less, from a major label in these venues. Yet these future rockstar hopefuls will lay down their money, money they obtained by either selling tickets, loans from their parents, gifts from their girlfriends (or boyfriends, don’t wanna sound sexist here) or, egads, a DAY job, just for the chance to stand in the spot where Jim Morrison, or Slash, or Eddie Van Halen stood...and show the world what they have to offer. What gives? Wait a minute.....sooooooo, if you wanna “make it” in the music business in Hollywood, you gotta invest in your own career? Allow me to explain, to the best of my ability.

talk show). Back in the 50’s, artist managers would pay radio dj’s to play their client’s music. In 1989, Cashbox Magazine researcher, Kevin Hughes was murdered on Music Row, apparently because he stumbled upon the scam that was being run there. Wannabe singers would pay to have their songs pushed up the charts in Cashbox and Hughes wasn’t having any of it...and threatened to expose the man who was eventually convicted of killing him. Pretty sad stuff, huh? To take the one thing that we human beings have over other mammals, our gift of creativity, and treat it like a dirty crackwhore. Sucks doesn’t it? Especially if the song sucked. And this, my friends, is what is happening to our music scene..all over. It’s like bad karaoke night. And it’s everywhere, Las Vegas, NYC, Miami, FL, it’s even reached the UK, but it is totally frowned upon and even club owners think the promoters are “fucking wankers”. If you have the money to rent Madison Square Garden, or even Carnegie Hall, it’s yours for the taking, doesn’t matter if you’re talented or not.

Pay to Play, Payola, Bribery, Extortion.... it all sounds so.....so, dirty, maybe even criminal in nature.

Pay to Play, Payola, Bribery, Extortion....it all sounds so...so, dirty, maybe even criminal in nature. The truth is, IT IS...it’s just been colored over with excuses and reasons...and, it’s been going on for a very long time, and no, the Los Angeles music scene is not run by the Mafia...(well, maybe some areas, but that’s a whole ‘nother PA G PAE G74 E 74

I worked in the music business for over 30 years in NY and then Nashville. In Nashville I would get 20 albums a week from different God-awful singers with even more God-awful songs, (I used those CD’s as coasters. The running joke in my office was “Is it a keeper or a coaster”?) These people actually invested money and time in their “careers”, and usually with the backing of someone with no hearing in one ear, and totally deaf in the other, would pack up and come to Nashville, seeking fame and fortune. Then I would be down on lower

Broadway, or Printer’s Alley and hear some gorgeous, lonesome voice, deftly strumming a beat up old Fender acoustic, and as I’d get closer, I’d see it was an old homeless man. Wow. If someone would just invest some money in this talent, imagine what our entertainment world would sound like. Ah, but I digress, as I often do.

Gazzarri’s on Sunset is supposedly where it all began, around 1985, however, in truth, all the clubs in the area began implementing this practice due to violence between LAPD and the patrons of these hotspots. It screwed with the club’s ability to get insurance and the Whiskey was even closed down briefly. That’s when a few promoters swooped down and saved the day. Guys like Bill Thomas, of CIA Productions (no relation to us) and John Egger of First Class Productions, offered to rent out the clubs. It worked like this: They would rent the venue for $1,500. They sold tickets to the bands that wanted to play, $8 a ticket, minimum of 100, and the band could sell the tickets to get their money back. There are good and bad points to this situation. The good points are: The promoter made his money, and he made ALOT of money if he got a bunch of bands to do the same thing on the same night ($800 times 5 bands, do the math). He paid for the rental of the venue and the advertising. The band would tell their family and friends “Hey, we’re playing at the Roxy, buy a ticket and come see us!” (the bad point of this is coming soon, I promise). The band could also give these tickets away, which was basically another form of investing in their career. A really smart band would utilize this opportunity to the hilt, by pushing the envelope and getting the labels to come see them play. The bad points are: “Hey, we’re playing the Roxy, buy a ticket”! Response: “I’m your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/mother/best friend, why should I buy a ticket”....or “Put me on the guest list”. More bad points...you SUCK and now

everyone is going to hear how you sucked and be really pissed that they had to pay $8 to hear you. If you were not prepared, hadn’t polished your craft, you have just pretty much sealed your fate...that is, until the next time you’ve got $800 to flush down the toilet. Yes, it’s like bad money chasing bad music, but the clubs want to stay in business and the promoters want to earn a living. So what’s the harm? Okay, fasten your seatbelts boys and girls...it’s going to be a very rocky ride. Promoters started getting greedy. They started charging more money for the prime slots. A&R reps didn’t go out late at night during the week, and hardly at all on the weekends, so if you were hoping to be in front of a scout, you had to be playing around 8-9pm, late enough for these guys/girls to have dinner and early enough for them to get home and get their beauty rest. You might have been given a time slot of 8:30 but another band came around with more money, so you get bumped to 10 and they take your slot, and they suck even more than you do. And I use the term suck in a loving and kind way. This Mother of Music and Mayhem is just trying to give ya all a little learning course. If, when you get on the stage, you cannot draw enough people to be willing to pay $7 for a ticket to come and see you play and if you don’t have club promoters and owners coming up to you afterwards and offering you a paid gig, this means you are not good enough. This means you need to go back to the drawing board, write better songs, learn your craft and perfect it, before you venture

out on the Sunset Strip. The Strip is to the Valley what Madison Square Garden is to a bar in the Port Authority. Polish your act in a smaller arena. Practice your music in clubs where you don’t have to fork over a month’s paycheck to play. There are bands that get paid. These are the bands who do their jobs. They learn the business of music and they don’t ever lose sight of their dream. But they also understand that it IS about the talent. People are not going to pay to listen to garbage, plain and simple. Your Mom will tell you you’re wonderful. She does you a disservice if you’re really not..but that’s what Mom does. The general public, and, more importantly, this business of music (and entertainment in total) do not. So what does a poor boy do, playing in a rock and roll band? There are some alternatives to the Pay to Play game or Play for Free. Unless you have a big draw, this might not work on Sunset, because their overhead is quite high. But here are some suggestions and also a way to keep everyone honest. 1) Split the door. Hand out flyers and for every person that comes in with the flyer, the band gets half of whatever they paid at the door, for example, 100 people paid $10, you get half, $500. It’s not a lot, but it’s easier than trying to get people to fork over money for a prepaid ticket. What if they lose it or something happens and they can’t make it. They just threw that money away.

I’m sure you’ll have more creative ways to make your music mean something, but let’s start with these. I also feel it’s my duty to point out that these days, labels are not signing bands. Video may have killed the radio star, but i-Tunes massacred the record business. If you want to play live, do it because you LOVE to do it, not because you’re hoping Clive Davis or Lou Adler will walk in and be wooed. Bands that had major label deals and distribution have re-formed and are touring because they HAVE to. They make their money this way, along with merchandising. But, again, that’s a whole ‘nother talk show too, and I think you need to be fed this information in small doses. So, until next time, keep honing your craft, play until your fingers bleed and get your name out there. If enough good and talented musicians refuse to give in to the Pay to Play shenanigans, eventually it will go away. The music fans will stop going to clubs that have bad music and the owners and promoters will have to come up with another plan, one that makes everyone happy. Supply and demand, people, it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure this out. Unfortunately, it may take a long, long time for changes to happen. •

2) Charge a bit more at the door than usual and give the patron a free drink ticket. With drinks going at $10-20, this will be a big draw for alot of people. This, of course, is more of a suggestion to club owners/managers. 3) Invest in some blank CD’s, get a label maker and throw a few songs on it. Make sure the band’s logo is on the CD and the cover. Sell them at the gig. 4) Make a sign that says “Free collectible CD with your paid entrance”. Have someone work the door with the club staff to make sure these CDs are given out. At the end of the night when you’re getting paid, you check to see how many CD’s are left. If they’re all gone, then you know how much money came in. PA G PAE G76 E 76

Like Beauty, truth lies in the eye of the beholder - and in the mind of the artist. The bronze and ceramic creations of sculptor Claudia Cohen are not realistic in any strict sense of the term, but they are precise renditions of her imagination; engaging articulations of the ruminations of her subconscious. With her dazzling style of meticulous detail and feeling for form, the work brings to life a magical cast of characters - human, animal, and are a fantastical progeny from a different and inviting universe. In the book Humor in art, the work was described as Comic Surrealism, which aptly sums up her feel for humor and pathos. Tony MacLaren The Big Bang

Music, Magic, & Mystery, best describe Tony’s well rounded abilities and talent. He reminds me of James Bond with long hair and a flair for the dramatic. His music is definitely rock and the arrangements are pro all the way. Great production, singing, songwriting, playing ability all culminate into “The Big Bang” available through online connection at all the usual sites. This is music worth listening to from a creative force with nothing to compare to. To try and peg hole a magician, musician, mentalist would be like trying to call a Horse an Elephant. There’s really no words to define where he begins and where he continues. He is an amazing Magician of main showroom quality and known from time to time as Barry Manilows guitarist. He’s striking in appearance and regal in his manner. Look for more from this amazing Earthling in volumes to come. You can reach out to Tony at www.antigravityrecords.com

Keesha Scott Hogan - Keesha Scott

Bonnie Mizell Two Sides

Meet the “Girl Next Door”! Here’s a really good looking Country Girl with 7 songs of mostly unrequited love from her debut effort. Her songs “”Innocent At Heart” & “Anything Less” show a much more mature woman’s thoughts than that of the neighbors daughter. Since the time I received this CD she has married and carried on a tradition as “Keesha Scott - Hogan” (Kudos to her for taking her husbands surname) She’s been producing great country rock music as evidenced by her releases on Youtube and at her site. She’s a strong lyricist and singer. Her voice is soothing, her melodies are memorable, and her words resonate with many peoples emotions. She continues to perform with her bands, and solo, in the Southern California region. She’s scheduled for an upcoming performance at St. Rocke , 142 PCH in Redondo Beach, CA. Monday, April 11th at 8pm. We’ll be there to review her live show God willing. Visit www.KeeshaScott.com for more information and updates.

Speed, Accuracy, Creativity, Composition, and Impossible come to mind when listening to John’s Rules CD. He maybe among one of the greatest guitar players in the world. He has a hard time accepting praise like that, but anyone who encounters a live performance by this “Swedish Guitar Slayer” would have to agree they just witnessed one of the most amazing “High Wire” acts ever seen on 6 strings. Not only does he play in the L.A. Metal Core Band “Ampora”, John teaches advanced guitar at L.A. Music Academy as well as private lessons to fledgling shredders. He is also on a quest with his “Acoustic Assault” Tour in 2012 playing TV, Film, Movie, and Game Themes in mind bending medleys of memory jogging songs we all grew up watching and listening to. His latest endeavors include Ampora’s next album, The Overlords arrangement & recording of “Terminal Heat” and his latest masterpiece, “A Permanent State Of Transformation” all are created with the Kemper Profiling Amplifier (Which every guitar player should own) John is a Phenomenon. You can find him all over Youtube and join him at www.JohnHuldtMusic. com for more.

Bonnie is a staple of the Las Vegas entertainment scene. Here voice is gruff, sultry, powerful, clean with a good range for the music she writes. Something about her vocal and songwriting style reminds me of Bonnie Raitt cool mixed with a Melissa Etheridge attitude. She’s easy on the eyes with a very classy, sophisticated demure. She plays piano like you’ll follow easily as she lays out her songs with a memorable format. Her uptempo songs are aggressive, edgy, and pop oriented. She has that big concert appeal. Her piano work and vocals in the ballads she’s written sound so exciting to hear because of the ebb and flow of her compositions. Her duet with Donnie Kehr on “Over There” is awesome. Her vocal on “Don’t fall for Donnie” has a real nice feel that sounds comfortably familiar. There’s nothing about the woman I don’t like. She has the total package and delivers it with conviction. Her performances are regular and I will seek her out when I am in Vegas. Look her up at www.BonnieMizell.com will be a good time where ever she appears. Her dueling pianos and solo appearances are a lot of fun always!
