In this time of recession, the daunting task of publishing an Art & Entertainment magazine may appear to be an insane undertaking, however, what amazes me is the multitude of talent that continues to thrive in their perspective industries during these times. Passion is certainly a driving force that seems to weather the storm of all adversities. In this wake of financial strife there has been a tragic mishap that as a concerned musician and publisher I want to make all our artists and the world aware of. Our future is in jeopardy. The termination of school programs involving arts and music are removing the essential tools for individuals who may have the potential to pursue a life of creativity. It is “OUR” job as creators, adults, teachers, and parents to support the efforts of our youth. In the ensuing issues it is our intention to exploit the avenues of resolve to help establish our magazine not only as an avenue for established artists, but to represent the passions of all, young and old. We hope to gain continued support for CIA Magazines and appreciate all of you who have chosen to become a part of our “family.” Our undying gratitude is what fuels our passion and desire to continue to publish this magazine. The pending disaster of losing interest in the arts by our educational system is paramount to our endeavors. Your interest in our publication is deeply appreciated by all. If you take a close look at those within our publications you will find wonders beyond belief of God given talent both self taught and those academically educated. We hope for your continued support in our pursuit of individuals that make this world an interesting place to live in. Thanks for taking your time with another issue of CIA.

We are so honored that you have chosen to be part of this exciting publication, as you allow this magazine to be another “stage” for you to shine in the world. The 2012 issue will be implementing some new ideas and concepts to help further expand and promote all our Creative Independent Artists. As John mentioned, one of our goals is to help ensure that music programs, instruments, and education in the Arts are made available for students in every school. CIA will be helping to promote events such as fund raisers, charities and other Art Awareness activities in an effort to make sure that the Arts in our schools stay alive. Blessing to you all, and I’m looking forward to promoting your passions in 2012! Creatively yours,

To fully understand this, since it is much easier said than done, it’s important to understand all the things that surround it. So first, let’s look more closely at the role of the agent.

The Role of a Talent Agent The most basic reason to have an agent is to have someone working for you like a salesman. You are the product that they are selling to the casting director. Think of your audition as a demonstration of the product. The role of the agent, therefore. is to try to give the casting director a demo of the product to see if they want to use it.

HO W TO G E T T H E RI G H T HO L LY WOOD TA L E N T A G E N T !

For every actor they send on an audition, the agent puts their reputation on the line with that casting director. It’s important to the agent that you do a good job, not only to book the role, but also to keep their credibility with the casting director. With regard to money, the agent gets paid 10% when you make money, and that’s it. There are no other fees that you pay to them. Of course they want to get you work, because that’s when they get paid.

T

he main reason to have an agent (or manager) is for them to submit you and pitch you to their contacts to try to get you considered for the roles those contacts are casting.

Not only should you find an agent, but you should find one who really believes in you and will make a concerted effort to get you in for a role that you’re right for. In general, the right agent for you is the one who gets you work and can do the job of getting you in for the roles that are right for you at your level or just above. PA G PAE G8E 8

If any agent wants to charge you money, they are either doing something illegal, or they are not a legitimate agent. Marketing services like those offered by Smart Girls Productions at www.SmartG.com/actors/agent-mailings.html tracks all of the agents, who are legit and not, and with their marketing services, they can help you do mailings to those who are right for you. Agents are only allowed to charge a commission for the work they do – that is governed by state law. This is one of the areas that differs from Talent Managers, and they are allowed to charge fees in addition to their commission. However, the best managers will only charge their percentage when you actually work. Let’s look more closely at their role.

The Role of a Talent Manager

What is the legal difference between Agents and Managers?

The main traditional difference with managers is that they are more focused on your career overall instead of auditions only on a day-to-day basis. Depending on a particular manager, they might work with you to create a new look and style. They might take you to parties and events to introduce you to industry people that they want to get to know you. Of course, this is the ideal scenario. The fact is, that can still happen for someone who is new, but when it does, it’s usually for people who are still pretty young, such as a child or even someone who is 18-22 and has long-term potential for development. For most actors, managers these days often function like a souped-up agent. They work with you on your career more closely than an agent because they have a smaller roster. They may submit you. And they will often help you find an agent. But on the other hand, they may not have as many relationships with casting directors and usually don’t spend nearly as much time submitting their clients for roles. If you want to know the definition that The National Conference of Personal Managers gives for managers, go to their website at: http://www.ncopm.com/index.htm

They list their Code of Ethics, agreements, and much more. Regarding money, it is customary for a manager to get 15%, but you must read your contract very carefully as yours may vary and they have every right to.

The Pros and Cons of Agents vs. Managers If you’ve ever tried to figure out the real difference between agents and managers and which one you should have, you’re not alone. They both represent you. They both want to make money off of you. They both help your career. So what’s the difference? The answer is that there is a legal difference, and that plays out into a whole set of pros and cons for each. Let’s start there.

To become a Talent Agency (but not a management company) in California, you must be licensed by the State, which includes posting a surety bond of $50,000. (Until 2004 it was only $10,000, but because too many agents never paid their clients, the State raised it to $50,000.) Although the agent can pay around $500 - $1000 a year for a bond company to post the $50K, a manager, on the other hand, does not have to be bonded at all. The second difference (but related to the first) is that a Manager can counsel you on your career, but they cannot procure work for you as an actor without working in conjunction with an agent. A talent agency is treated like an employment agency by the State, which is why a bond is required. To get you a job, a manager should be working in conjunction with an agent who is licensed by the State (designed to protect your money). Most simply put, an agent procures employment for you so they have to be licensed by the State, and a manager advises you on all aspects of your career and does not have to be licensed by the State. Once you get moving along and understand the basics of how the business works, my recommendation is to get BOTH an agent and a manager. It is CRITICAL that you get as much “air” time as possible, meaning get people pitching you as much as possible. If you have an agent and a manager, that’s two people pitching instead of one, which is good! As everyone knows, in this business you need all the help you can get! No matter who you go with as your rep, the most important thing is that they “get” you and that you have confidence in their ability to do what you need. There are good people and unscrupulous people as in any business, so do your due diligence. Then use common sense, listen to your instinct, take action, and go for it.

Which To Go For First – Agent or Manager?

Marketing Yourself to Get an Agent or Manager

In the past, it was pretty cut and dried that you got a manager when things started to kick into drive in your career.

What this means is that, as an actor, at some point you will need to make an effort to get an agent and/or a talent manager. The process of doing that falls in the category of activities called marketing yourself.

Even since SAG and the talent agencies did not renew their agreement , however, many more agents have been acting like managers, meaning focusing on submitting their clients for auditions on a regular basis. With this change of events, many more of these formeragent-new-managers are open to taking on people they think can work in the short run, not only in the long run. Therefore, it’s feasible to go for a manager at any time in your career. You just need to find the managers that are open to new people. With that being said, here are a few guidelines about which to go to first.90% of the time when you’re new, you should go for a commercial agent first. If you are under 22 and have very strong acting training or credits, a little bit of business savvy, a good look, and a good personality, you should go for a manager first. If you already have an agent but are thinking you should change, keep the agent you have, but focus on getting someone else on your team. You might consider going for a manager and then work with them to find a different agent. If you’ve been in the business for a while and you’re tired of agents, then go for a manager. Or if you have a bad taste in your mouth from your last manager, go for an agent. If you have a commercial agent and a couple of TV Co-star Roles, and you want to get an agent strong enough to get you out on theatrical auditions (film and TV), go for a manager who may have the contacts to help you get a strong theatrical agent. It is very challenging to get a strong film/ TV agent with few credits. In the end, there’s absolutely NO one single right way to do it. Consider the trade-offs. If you can’t make up your mind based on those, then flip a coin and go for it. Of course, if you have the marketing budget for it, try to approach both agents and managers to increase your chances of success. PA G PAE G10 E 10

There are numerous actions you can take to market yourself, some of which are more advanced for when you are past the getting started phase, but I’m not going to cover those. Right now, I’m going to cover a few of the traditional ways of marketing yourself and also touch on a few other options. As you may already have figured out, one of the first ways to market yourself is to get a manager or an agent. You might get one of them through contacts, but usually when you’re first starting out you don’t have contacts. The most common way to get your first agent if you have no contacts is through a Cover Letter Mailing—at www.SmartG. com/actors, they can help you put a mailing together in 2 hours for under $200. A second reasonable way to get an agent is through a showcase. For a Cover Letter Mailing, you write a very specific cover letter to introduce yourself as an actor and then you send it out to agents that you think may be interested in you. The benefit of a Cover letter Mailing is that you can do it at any time, and you can do it on your own without having to coordinate with other people. You don’t have to wait till you find a workshop to meet them, and you don’t have to produce a whole showcase. You just create a mailing and send it out. The nice thing about a workshop is that 1 to 4 agents get to see you perform and see you in person. Showcases are great if you can find one. The limitation, however, is having only 1 to 4 agents attend is not that many since they might not even be looking for your type. Now let’s look a bit more in depth at how the Cover Letter Mailing works.

I just celebrated one year of performing at the Las Vegas Hilton, in ‘NUNSENSE’ as Sister RobertAnne. This is the most comedic lead I have ever been given, and it is such a blast to sing, dance, act, and listen to laughter every day! I have credits for film, television, and radio, along with an extensive history in theater. I have been a lead in Las Vegas production shows for more than 8 years. One of my favorite LV production shows was an original musical called ‘Tease’. We played ‘strippers’ and were dubbed one of Vegas’s sexiest shows, by E! Entertainment and the Travel Channel, and aired in reruns on both channels for several years. So if I look familiar, perhaps you were up late one night... This magazine is all about passion, and mine is alive in many areas. This year I was inducted into the Las Vegas Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for work I did as a youngster in a fantastic 9 piece horn band that recorded originals, and played at Disneyland and Disneyworld. You may have seen me at the Tropicana Hotel in LV all through the 80’s in Actress • Singer • Dancer Musician an act called ‘Taylor & Taylor’, singing and • Bass Player • Songwriter • Voice-Over Talent playing bass. After a career performing in nightclubs and lounges all over the world for more than 20 years, I still perform regularly in ‘copy’ bands doing everything from Lady Gaga to Joan Jett to Diana Krall.

Cover Letter Mailings To Agents and Managers

You have to tell them about yourself in a way that you come to life on the page.

For decades, cover mailings have been one of the best ways you can go about getting an agent or manager when you don’t have strong credits.

Your cover letter needs to not only tell about your experience in the business – if you have any – but also convey a sense of what type of actor you are, what you’re like as a person, and how you come across. You need to seem like a real person, not just a wannabe actor.

A cover letter for an actor should be written in a very specific way that is different than if you were trying to get a job as a secretary or engineer. Here are a few tips.

It also goes beyond that. It is also better if you seem like an interesting person, you’re easy to work with, and they believe they could make money off of you.

Cover Letter Writing Tips

Even if you don’t have a lot of credits yet or if you haven’t taken many classes yet, you can make yourself stand out with a great cover letter.

The purpose of a cover letter is to get an interview. This is as true for acting as it is for any job, but for acting it should not be as formal as a regular business letter.

Here are a few ideas for bringing yourself to life on the page:

If you have great credits, your cover letter should focus on that and show the agent that you are a money maker. Of course, most actors seeking an agent do not have super strong credits, so you need to go beyond just talking about your credits. If you’re new, it’s especially true.

A past accomplishment like being a former pro football player or a former Miss Universe competitor.

In a previous section, I wrote in depth about how important getting a great headshot is, so let’s look at where the cover letter fits in. Think of it like a horse race. You’ve got to have a good horse to start with to get close to winning, but often times the winner wins by a nose, not by a mile. Your headshot is 95% of the game which is like having a strong horse out of the gate. Your cover letter is the 5% that could help your headshot come in first by a nose. Agents get tons of headshots submitted to them every week with many of them being very similar. The big question is if an agent is looking at 5 or 10 headshots with the same level of credits, then who will they choose to call in? That’s where the cover letter comes in. Your cover letter need to push their interest over the edge. After writing thousands and thousands of cover letters for actors over the years, it comes down to one big secret.

A certain hobby, presented in a unique, unexpected way.

Something related to your travels: “I hiked all over South America for a year after college.” A mention of your family’s history, such as “My father was a U.S. Ambassador and we lived in Germany for 6 years.” I’m a comic book freak and have first editions of … (some comic book). I love all the video games and often am asked to beta-test new games. If you don’t have anything as compelling as something like these things, try to identify your passions. Showing that you are passionate is one of the qualities that brings you to life. Be honest, but do whatever you can to come across as an interesting, alive, passionate person who would be great to work with. Keep your letter to one page. Tell them only enough to get them interested in seeing you. When you go in for the interview, you can continue to sell them on representing you. Once you have a cover letter, then you need to select the agents you want to mail it to with your headshot and resume. You can go get lists of agencies at a bookstore or at SAG.org as a starting point. But make sure that you also have the

names of the individual person you are going to mail to. Do not send it only to the company’s general address. If you don’t want to do it yourself, you can hire a company like Smart Girls Productions (www.SmartG.com) to help you create a professional cover letter mailing to agents and managers. Specifically they help you write a cover letter the proper way and guide you through the process. They will help you pick out the right headshots, composing the cover letter for you, creating a starter resume, and even picking out the agents and/or talent managers that would be the best ones for you to mail to. Then you get the cover letters and labels to send out. They can help you whether you are in Los Angeles or out of town, but they specialize in tracking Hollywood agents and managers.

discuss with your prospective agent or manager. As you get more experience and knowledge, it is critical that your agent is sending you out for the right roles. You should also choose an agent that you believe will be most effective. And finally, choose someone you feel you have a rapport with. If you would like more information like this by Melody Jackson, check out her book “Hollywood Actors Crash Course” at www.HollywoodActorsCrashCourse.com. Additionally subscribe to the Hot Marketing Tips for Actors at www. Smartg.com and also get a list of the Top 20 Talent Agents in Hollywood. •

Choosing An Agent Who Is Right For You If you have the luxury of choosing between multiple agents to work with, one of the most important things is to make sure that the two of you view your casting the same way. You may be thinking that you’re right for leading roles while they think you’re best suited to quirky character roles or you may think you should be playing roles in your late 20’s or early 30’s, and they think you should be playing early 20’s. When you go on auditions, you might see that you are clearly different than everyone else there. That is when you would need to talk to your agent about what he is submitting you for. If you are going out for the wrong things, you will not book the role and that makes you look bad. Of course, on the other side if the agent really is sending you in for the wrong roles, they will start to look bad in the eyes of the casting director for wasting their time, so it’s in everyone’s interest for you to be going in for the roles you could really be right for. Being a new actor, you may not yet know what you would be right for based on the way that Hollywood casts, but it’s something to start thinking about right away and then to C I A A RT I ST S.CO M

A m p or a B and Not even they could have imagined they would form a metal band in Los Angeles when they met in New Jersey when they were just four years old. Matt Mufalli and Matt Emburgia formed Ampora just a year ago in an effort to create a sound they for so long had in their heads - “Everyone in the band grew up listening to the a lot of the same metal bands and I think the reason we can write together so easily is that we have no hesitation being completely honest with the other” Mufalli states. After spending some time writing and auditioning musicians in the LA area they finally were able to round out Ampora with bassist / vocalist Evan Magness, drummer Kyle Rector and lead guitarist John Huldt. With Taylor Voeltz (Born of Osiris, Circle of Contempt, Broadcast the Nightmare) at the helm as producer / engineer, and mixed by Daniel Braunstein (Volumes, Bermuda) Ampora created the EP “Last Chance” rooted with the riffs reminiscent of classic metal but a new edge and sense of songwriting to please fans of every metal subgenre. Determined to get their music out to everyone as soon as possible, Ampora will be hitting every stage they can and will likely be fueling the soundtrack to a circle pit near you in the not so distant future.

Bi lly N unn It was the song, “A Walk on the Wild Side”, by “The Late Great Legendary Jimmy Smith” on a Hammond B3 Organ. The sound of that B3 Organ excited Billy and he started playing in his senior year, at Hutch Tech Senior High School in Buffalo New York. He knew even then that the future for him was to be a professional musician. Today Billy Nunn is among the most gifted and versatile B3 Organist and Keyboardist.

At the age of twenty, he took a job with another jazz legend “The Late Great Johnny Lytle”. (Billy recorded 3 albums with Mr. Lytle.) One year later, after hearing Billy play The Hammond B3, he was off to Japan with The Softtones, recorded and wrote some songs with the Softtones. Billy met both Lytle and The Softtones at “Jan’s Supper Club” in Buffalo, New York, owned by his father, (Mr. William Nunn Sr. CEO/Founder of Mo Do Records) were many legends of today performed. The music Billy recorded with Mo Do Records back in the 70’s can still be heard today in one of Tyler Perry movies (Why Did I Get Married Too “) and Forrest Whitaker’s (“Our Family Wedding). Billy Nunn can be heard in casinos and clubs in Las Vegas, on the radio in the song recorded with Rick James “Mary Jane” (Billy Nunn Co-Writer), and albums, “Come get it” and “Bustin’ Out”. Before Rick James’ untimely death, Rick asked Billy to help him get the Stone City Band back together. Keeping the promise, you can now see Billy’s performance as “The Original Stone City Band” takes the FUNK into the future.

Eccentric to international stages, Joe Black takes to shows in an almost cartoon-esque theatrical assault, sweeping the audiences through an array of show tunes, ballads, and a rather varied but fine selection of morally questionable entertainment. Joe Black, or Mister Black, if you’d prefer? Is no stranger to the ridiculous, the sometimes disturbing, or the downright shocking world of entertainment. As well as regularly treading the boards of the sell out sensation that is the worlds biggest fetish club Torture Garden and international tours with the critically acclaimed Ministry of Burlesque, he also hosts his own sell out residency in the lavish Edwardian Kings Theatre, in Hampshire. An entertaining and inspiring cabaret artist, with a constant stream of theatrical endeavours across the UK, europe and internationally. music Lynette S kynyr d Lynette Skynyrd is the world’s only all female trybute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Based in Los Angeles, the band was founded in 2010 by vocalist Laurie Es. Laurie had already built a reputation as the lead member of hard rock band Hallowed Engine, a former DJ, and a promoter in L.A.’s heavy rock scene. A lifelong Skynyrd fan, Laurie set out to create a tribute that would truly do justice to the genre-defining Southern hard rock of the original band, and the exceptional songwriting and musicianship that earned Lynyrd Skynyrd its rightful place in the pantheon of classic arena rock bands. With a powerful mid-range voice that makes her the perfect female counterpart to Ronnie Van Zant, and a unique group of female musicians with established credibility, Lynette Skynyrd would not be just another allgirl tribute band. Guitar rock was defined by bands like the original Lynyrd Skynyrd - with their soaring leads and classic riffs, they left some mighty big shoes to fill. For Gary Rossington’s exquisite leads Laurie tapped SST Records artist Sylvia Juncosa, who has several solo albums to her name and toured extensively in the US and Europe. Sylvia is known for her expressive style and has even been called “the female Jimi Hendrix”. Joining Sylvia on rhythm and on leads is Emily Burton of the band Fireball Ministry, heavyhitters of “stoner rock” who have toured the US and Europe with the likes of Blue Oyster Cult, Rob Zombie, and Uriah Heep. For a rhythm section that could carry Skynyrd’s easy-going yet hard-hitting grooves, Laurie brought in Berklee Music school grad and professional film composer Marika Tjelios on bass, and pro drummer Antonia Scarpa, who is known not only for her work with Interscope Records artists Lifter and other major label acts, but also as the film director who created the indie documentary “Betty Blowtorch”. The band was pleasantly surprised to find that those two, coincidentally, had already been friends for years. Filling out the band’s large, hall-filling sound is keyboardist Cherry Garcia, seminal art-rocker and veteran of the Warped Tour.

mal Mal simply call what they do Rock N’ Roll, but don’t let that title fool you. They are no cookie cutter Rock outfit and they can prove it. Their ability to layer and fuse simple pop melodies to unconventional chord movements, create spaced-out soundscapes, long-driving, dynamic build ups and their unique use of rhythmic relationships between instruments take the listener on an incredible and fun journey leaving them wanting more. The three musicians, Kris Jung - Guitar/ vocals, Kevin D. - Drums and Pedro Hollywood – Bass, met in ‘09 when a mutual friend placed them together for session work. After playing and a few good hangs, they realized their shared love for unforgettable pop melodies, sensitive dynamics and the violent angst found in their mutual, more aggressive rock influences should be put to good use, and it was. From the jams thereafter it was love at first riff and they immediately began crafting songs for their first record. Mal’s live performances are swiftly gaining them a solid fan base and a reputation as a monumental rock act in the LA area. These performances have even garnered them the attention of legendary mix engineer and producer, Tom Fletcher, who has now joined forces with the trio to work on their debut album due out this winter.

r o y c e nels on Royce has lived for the stage since her first taste as a young toddler, tip toeing in tap shoes in front of a few hundred people. However, she discovered her true passion for singing as a 10 year old at summer camp belting out tunes on the stage for the first time. “It combined my two favorite things: the stage and a rush I could only feel from singing my heart out,” Royce says as she reminisces. By the age of 13, she was working in the studio with songwriter/producer Karen Tobin, and in 2004 she won a Golden Globe for singing background vocals on a song sung by Mick Jagger for the movie “Alfie” called “Old Habits Die Hard”. She went on to record demos and back-up vocals for many producers, songwriters, and artists including Dave Stewart, Lois Blaisch (writer of Tiffany’s 1988 #1 hit single “Could’ve Been”), Mick Jagger, Sheryl Crow, and Candyman 187. To date, she has performed in venues all over Los Angeles including The House of Blues, The Viper Room, The Roxy, and The Whiskey-A-Go-Go. She has also fronted her fair share of bands and been in few girl groups (most recently BG4 produced by Bobby Jones and Shane Sparks of “So You Think You Can Dance”). She is currently writing for other artists while also embarking on a Pop/Rock solo career cowriting her newest originals with songwriter Peter Hanna (writer of “Hollywood Girl” for the Hollywood Insider and Mitchel Musso’s new record “Get Away”.)

“I sing because I believe I was given a gift; I can get people to listen in a way most can’t. I live for that gift to inspire change in people and our world. I figure the more people who know my name, the more lives I’m effecting. “

MAR A & TH E B I G ROCK S TAR S FU N 8 0 ’ s ROCK COVER B A ND Sure, Mara & The Big Rockstars will play some Journey and Bon Jovi – because they’re awesome! But they also play tunes like ‘Final Countdown,’ ‘Africa,’ ‘Kickstart My Heart,’ and “Eye Of The Tiger” to keep audiences on the dance floor and at the bar. What sets them apart from other 80s party bands is not silly costumes or schticky dialogue, but completely live instruments with five-part vocal harmonies, and a can’t-take-your-eyes-off-her frontwoman, most often compared to Janis Joplin and Nancy Wilson. Audiences of all ages follow their roaming party from venue to venue all over Los Angeles, bringing the rock hits to clubs, festivals and private/corporate parties. Also available as an acoustic solo, duo, or trio for more intimate engagements. Before the cover band, Mara was an award-winning solo singer/songwriter chasing a record deal in LA. A native New Yorker, she jump-started her career playing on the streets and in the pubs of Scotland. She found herself playing five packed nights a week for locals and International backpackers, promoting her original albums. Invitations for live radio appearances and performances as a featured artist at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival kept her on the move, and she returned to tour in the UK for the following three summers. Her performances gained national media coverage on Scottish television, radio and worldwide webcasts. In the states or overseas, 80s covers or originals, Mara continues her commitment to making a difference by donating time and performances to support Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s Research charities.

j o e sabat in i As a musician (guitarist, producer, singer-songwriter) I have over twenty years behind me. I have released my own albums, had songs on the radio, produced over seventeen records and performed live in front of audiences of over twenty thousand people. I’ve shared the stage and various productions with some of music’s most renowned recording artists including: Eric Clapton, Michel Jackson, Madonna, Alice and Chains, Guns-N-Roses, Billy Idol, Van Halen, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, and more. Rolling into the two thousands, trying to make my way as a businessman, I gained a fair share of experience with four start-ups under my belt: Sky Asylum Films, Fleetwood Recording Studios, When Pigs Fly Records and most recently I Demand Systems, LLC. IDS is a software research and development company with patent dates in over eighty countries. It was a vision that traces back to the midnineties: a business model that set-out to align independent musicians with the advent up-coming Internet technologies. Originally I set-out to write the software code for a new type of Internet musicsite/service, conceived as sort of an interactive MTV for the next generation that allowed customers to buy and sell music over a network (on demand). In the early stages of development, while hacking-out the framework for the website, I inadvertently stumbled into the concept for a new type of system – combining video and e-commerce into a unified format.

My music has taken me many places and several bands over the years. I went to the Guitar Institute of Technology and right now I’m in a classic rock band. Besides playing classic rock, I would like to get into an original band. I’m very flexible to just about anything. As far as being an actor, I have done more work behind the camera. So now, at this stage, I feel that I have acquired substantial knowledge in the film industry and can apply that knowledge in front of the camera. My musical skills and my production skills enhances my talent in front of the camera.

j o el c age When Joel Cage plays, he sounds like a tight, well mixed, low volume rock ‘n roll band. One might argue that this is not all that hard to do ... all you need is a punchy, kick-ass tone, and the ability to play rhythm, lead , bass, drums, piano, organ, soaring string melodies and the occasional horn stab,at the same time, while still sounding exactly like an acoustic guitar. Sounds simple enough ... That’s what Joel Cage does.

W IC KE D SA I NTS Raw, Organic Music With No Artificial Sweeteners. It’s Good For You! Our debut album was released June 4, 2011. It’s a Gemini. Fitting for a band with a dichotomy for a name. But there’s nothing two-faced things about the music. It’s true to itself and its message. You can get the album at wickedsaints.net. It’s also on iTunes, Amazon and many others. Wicked Saints is a folk-rock/americana band with some really diverse influences, from rock to folk, reggae, blues, country. Admittedly we stray way off the standard three-chord progressions. But it’s more about letting each individual song say what it needs to say, the way it needs to say it. We’ve got tour dates in San Diego, Northern California, New Orleans and Austin, in addition to our home-base of Los Angeles. The Way I’m Strung is off to a nice start already. It hit #1 on Ourstage.com’s Indie Rock category in December, and #2 in January of this year. The album was featured as Album Of The Month by CountryTrack.nl in the Netherlands. WCNI in Connecticut has our album in it’s CMJ Top 30. Cuts from the album have been playing on many stations in the US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Brazil. Radio stations can find us at airplaydirect.com/wickedsaints. Our debut album was recorded at Milestone Recording in Los Angeles, produced by Annie Miles and at Wilmac Studio in Altadena, produced by David Williams and singer/songwriter Paul McCarty.

THE SOUND REVOLUTION IN MOTION...

By Glenn campbell

D

The age of Virtual Wireless Total Show Control is certainly here!

amon Gold, pioneer operator of Air Virtual Wireless Show Control technologies, currently featured on the cover of Live Sound International, is introducing perhaps the most compelling revolution in digital audio production since the “Digital Revolution” itself: Perfect wireless show control. There has long been wireless audio technology, but the difference with AIR Consoles is the stability of the interface that most all other systems lack regarding wireless application. Computer crashes, wireless drop out and interference, ease of operation, real time response work flow, quality of sound, and affordability. All this is controlled from the front of house (foh) in any location seemlessly on a notepad/tablet computer. Listening to the unique audio quality seemingly produced by this wireless tablet with its warmth, accuracy, and transparency will provide the listeners to experience what only analog could provide until now.

The age of Virtual Wireless Total Show Control is certainly here. Those presently utilizing AIR products have witnessed the passing of “The Virtual Wireless Revolution” already. The stability issues have been resolved. Workflow concerns have long been optimized for efficiency and comfort. AIR sound quaility is agreeably second to none. The affordability is far less expensive than competing brands even in comparison with regard to the AIR total show controllers. The sound quality and cost saving advantages are bankable for artists and engineers who have already made the leap. The current people utilizing AIR products are still small enough in numbers to relieve any apprehension about missed opportunity to gain technological advantage. The position to become a frontrunner in the world of Virtual Wireless is stil possible in todays market. Audio Integrated Reseach a.k.a. AIR, is relatively a new company with highly specialized teams of information, common interests, and collective experience in the entertainment industry. Their message is simple and clear, “Virtual Wireless Total Show Control” is no longer fiction. Their focus is to make their product more affordable for everyone to have fun and make PA G E 70

friends with in the music industry. The visionaries of this new technology are Damon Gold of Big Water Studios in Lake Tahoe, California, Glenn Campbell, producer, composer, and business man, and Bob Lentini of RML Labs. Those techies who know of Bob Lentini as “The Godfather of Digital Sound” know he is the creator of the hand-written code that spawned “SAW” & “SAC”, the predecessors of the digital sound revolution, realize that this is as serious as the industries top leading innovators could ever be. Interesting features of the AIR Consoles and the phrase ‘Total Show Controller’ are the extensive features that set this marvel apart from all competitors. Rather than being a single mixing console of one brand name, AIR consoles incorporate 25 complete full featured mixing consoles to choose from as a built in feature with seperate head amps for each. The ‘Total Show Controller’ with it’s extensive features and value are second to none that pale its competitors upon comparison. The concept of the AIR Consoles are to eliminate the massive ‘Snake Cables’ from a fixed station in the middle of the front of the house at fixed positions currently seen in the center of all events usually taking up massive seating space in the dead center of a venue or high upon a scaffold above the crowd at major concerts. The mainframe is wired from the instruments onstage to an AIR mainframe ‘transmittor’ operated by handheld wireless tablets that can adjust all aspects of the front of house sound while walking about the audience seating. This allows the perfect mix of each artist on stage to be dialed in independently from a distance where the listener can hear the complete nuances of any performance. The side stage monitor mix is dedicated independently to enable, for the first time, 24 full featured monitor mixes with independent stereo outputs. This allows each artist their own independent mix with out interference or interruptions from the Front Of House or the individual mixes onstage. An engineer can walk the stage and adjust levels in far less time and in greater detail than ever before. There is no other mixing console or combination thereof that can match AIR’s 24 Virtual Monitor Consoles Integrated Work Flow quality, performance, or efficiency currently know on the market.

The concept of the AIR Consoles are to eliminate the massive ‘Snake Cables...’

A lot of the following may lose some of you. The architecture is only the beginning advantages and values to be found in AIR Consoles products. 25 virtual consoles come standard with bulit-in Multi-Track recording, Built-in Multi-Track play back / immediate Virtual Sound Check, Complete workstations, HD Video playback ( x 8 slaves) DMX Recorded Show Control, 7.1 Surround Mixing, up to 72 Channels (except the AIR Lite X24), VST, effects plug-ins support, practically unlimited Scenes & Automation, total wireless control. Rather than confuse the issue any further with what the AIR Console is capable of doing, I’d like to simplify things by saying, “It does it all!” The cost of all the components included in the AIR Consoles, if they were to be purchased individually, would exceed $1.2 million USD and require a semi-trailer to haul around. Note; There are sound companies currently in tow with several semi-trailers of this equipment today that need to read this information. The AIR X48 suggested Manufactures Suggested Retail Price is between a high of $39,950 to a low of $34,950. In comaprison to a Yamaha PM5D single FOH console at +/- $70,000 and the Midas XL8 for +/- $340,000, the AIR Console is not only a bargain, but a much more superior product in the world of audio by todays standards. Consider the expense of Semi-Trailers, Snake cables and splitters opposed to a unit not much larger than an oversized suitcase and a suitcase of components that weigh under 300 pounds and can be transported in a small truck or van. The savings are into this millions of dollars to produce top quality audio using the AIR Console products. For any entity that utilizes mixing consoles, recording, playback, virtual sound check, large channel counts, stage lighting control, etc. for professional entertainment productions, AIR offers the greatest advantage for achieving both quality and savings. Visit www.AirConsoles.com to inquire about demos and information. •

Booking is A Separate Beast

I

n all the years that I have been working as an actor, I cannot recall ever completely duplicating my audition during a shoot. Inevitably something gets changed. So much so sometimes I think to myself, “This is so different from my audition, why did they even pick me?” The answer is simple. Booking is a separate beast! When you understand that booking a job is not necessarily how you’re going to shoot the job, then you will start separating out the two and see booking as it’s own art form. Trust me on this guys, I have booked over 40 films and 30 television shows in addition to helping actors book when I was a personal manager for 9 years and personally coaching 1000’s of actors over the years and witness them booking big jobs!

So what constitutes a booking? Well, it would take an entire “War and Peace” gigantic book to describe that one to you, but what I will tell you is that you have to be dynamic. Actors are so afraid of “going over the top” that they actually put a cap on their own performance. Did you know that ‘going over the top’ is simply not being in truth? If you are in EXACT TRUTH according to the writer’s intent and you are in the tone and style of the show or film, then why are you hitting it at a comfortable 7 when you should be hitting it at a 10+ to take the job? Why get all dressed up and inconvenience yourself to get to an audition and not go there to book it?

Instead of running your scene with anyone that will help you and flattening the hell out of it, why not section out your script and work your transitions and see if you actually know where this is for you and if you understand exactly what you are saying and feeling? Look for the transitions and keep switching them effortlessly like a precision driver. If you run the lines, then they will sound like lines run. PA G PAE G78 E 78

Another thing that constitutes a booking is, knowing what you are doing. Why would anyone hire you if you don’t know what you doing? Trust me, the last thing a casting director wants to hear from their boss is that they messed up by bringing you into their producer session and onto a set when you didn’t know what you are doing.

Also, are you prepared to shoot the scene right there in the office? If not, then don’t go to that audition. This is an add water and stir business people. I’m sorry, but no one cares about your process. Are you there to deliver the goods or not? Stop thinking that you’re going to get a second take or an adjustment to help you hit it exactly where they want you to be. If 6 actors are brought in for one job and 5 actors get it on the first take, why would they bring back the 6th actor who needed an adjustment? Be logical. Look at this business as a business. If the tables were turned, would you do business with you? Are you conducting yourself as a business? Are you really ready to work? This isn’t a joke. This is the real deal. Information is power! Here’s to booking big!

Jr Lovering - Looking Back

Atomix - In A Perfect World

If you can imagine what it would have been like to hear Jim Croce or Harry Chapins priginal demos before production, you’ll like the story telling of this artist.

Solid as rock can be. Here’s an album that hangs in your head. If you play you should have no problem winning over the girl you want (depending on your singing) learning these changes that are easty to follow.

At times the songs reminded me of Niel Young, Stephen Stils, & James Taylor. Not necessarily the songs themselves, the sounds, or the stories, but that familiar feeling of hearing that music for the first time knowing there is something about it worth listening to.

Tom Fletcher on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Mico Olmos on Bass & Lead Guitar, and Patrick Caccia on drums and vocals blend together Perfect Music “In A Perfect World.” Their soon to be released CD will be announced through many media channels. This is Tom Fletchers first outing as an artist from behind the mixing board where he has garnered gold and platinum albums from The Jacksons Victory Tour, Dokken, Ozzy, Jeff Beck, Toto, Yes, Paul Rogers, Motor Head, Don Henley, Hillary Duff, and the list goes on and on. Mico Olmos, the son of actor James Edward Olmos, is in his own right a film and music engineer with just as many credits to numerous to mention. One of Milan Italy most famous drummers, Patrick Caccia is not without merit. His credits have established him as one of the great drummers of the world. You can contact them at through this magazine. Info: p.caccia@sbcglobal.net

I’m sure things have progressed since this recording. You can email Point of Rock Records at Porrec@comcast.net to find out more about this artist.

This is the most amazing guitar player I have ever seen. This CD displays the many facets of his musical influences. He hails form Sweden where no one leaves without at least being able to play Ingvay Malmsteen note for note. His years here in the states have caught the ears of the most notable guitarists in the world. It’s only a matter of time before he is a household name. As of this writing ne is a lead guitarist in the Metal Band “Ampora” based in L.A. For information: john@johnhuldt.com

Lily Wilson - Habour This is reminisant of the 60’s college coffehouse singers that made their way to headline acts over the decades. Mellow, light, haunting. Nothing hard about this music at all. With a milk and honey voice and the look of an Angel she is great for easy listening, kicking back. Great harmonies, clever lyrics. Promising career with potential for major development. She’s beautiful, articulate, focused, and entertaining. She can easily solo her original catalog acoustically. Visit LilyWilson.com

Since 2009, her work has been helping (every day) more than 400 women, men and children recover instantly from burns sustained in the kitchen, on the job, fighting fires, and riding motorcycles. These recovered burn victims are from 43 states and 24 countries around the world, and include actors, musicians, stunt men, special effects agents, mothers and children. When you read her website, www.fireburndoctor. com, you will see that the only thing these people did was call, within 30 minutes of the burn, to the FireBurnDoctor at 1-818-332-6445. (This is definitely the number you want to keep in your own cell phone and tell others to do the same.) Jane would love you to send her your own footage of Instant Burn Recoveries for her next documentary. Whether you are a professional filmmaker, make films for a hobby or just have a camera cell phone ready when someone is burned, all you do is make the call to FireBurnDoctor and then roll the cameras! Like Beauty, truth lies in the eye of the beholder - and in the mind of the artist. The bronze and ceramic creations of sculptor Claudia Cohen are not realistic in any strict sense of the term, but they are precise renditions of her imagination; engaging articulations of the ruminations of her subconscious. With her dazzling style of meticulous detail and feeling for form, the work brings to life a magical cast of characters - human, animal, and are a fantastical progeny from a different and inviting universe. In the book Humor in art, the work was described as Comic Surrealism, which aptly sums up her feel for humor and pathos. Magic Realism is another term often used to characterize her narrative creations. There are few artists today who inhabit such an intriguing unified private world and have such an immediate gift in of inviting everyone else into it. Hi, my name is Georgina Flood and I am from Dublin in Ireland! I’ve been drawing since I was a child and always had a passion to one day become a portrait artist. I feel now I have created my very own distinctive style which I enjoy and a lot of others do too. I love to share my drawings of the people who have influenced me most and the hair is really my signature mark! I exhibited two pieces in the yearly exhibition ‘Come Together’ in Liverpool 2010. I also won first place in a Richard Starkey Facebook competition in 2010. This year I came in 2nd in the ‘Artist of the year 2011’ competition on the very popular Facebook page The artist in you. I won 1st place on ‘The Arts Connection Website’ art competition and was also 1st place and overall winner of the ‘Arts Canyon Gallery’ Art competition. In August 2011 I was the guest artist at the very first Scottish Beatle weekend. In June 2012 I will be the guest artist at the Welsh Beatle Daytripper Weekender. Without the influence of George Harrison, The Beatles, my friends and family I don’t think I would have ever followed my dream. I am looking forward to seeing what the future may hold for my work. I do hope you enjoy it!

S helly Meye r Author and article writer, Shelly Meyer, has been passionate about the written word for most her life. From a very early age, Shelly began scribbling notes and ideas on random scraps of paper, beginning with short poems, and eventually moving to short stories and a published novel. Shelly’s first novel, Portland Authority, took her five years to complete and was published on her birthday in October of 2005. She self-published, but regretted almost immediately, publishing it at all once she read the finished product, realising it wasn’t completed to her satisfaction. She decided, once her contract was up, she would re-write it and turn it into the best-seller she wanted. Right now, however, she is focusing on her second novel, The Letter, which, she says, will be her greatest achievement next to her two children. The novel is nearly complete and she is hoping to get in touch with publishers by the end of 2011. Shelly Meyer can be found all over the internet when a search on Google is done, but she is mainly found on Facebook, her fan page on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Tumblr. Shelly interacts with her friends on a daily basis on all of her pages; posting comments, re-posting her friends’ posts, and updating the writing she has done on her book from her official website. She encourages everyone to give feedback and suggestions and considers them all because they come from the people who will be reading her next best-seller.

“ I wi s h I ha d me ...” I’ve been asked by John Kaye, the Publisher and CEO of Creative Independent Artists Magazine to write an article about myself so I thought I’d share it with you. I have to say, it’s much more interesting to write about my journey to getting work as an actor. Like most of you, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I started at the bottom and worked my way up. Admittedly, I wish I had me back then because I would have made less mistakes and I would have capitalized on the opportunities along the way.

W

hen you first get out here, it literally takes forever just to find your way around, then there’s the myriad of things to do. The nightlife is packed with exciting adventures and there are a zillion classes to take. If I were to do it all over again, I would have come here with at least 3 years of living expenses and marketing money for my career. The biggest issue that actors face is juggling jobs in-between getting a job in the field they so passionately desire - Film and Television. I would have figured out what I was selling, what my type was, what the industry was buying and what actors on Television had the jobs that I desired. Coming out of Syracuse University and having acted on stage since the age of 10 gave me what I thought was the ammunition needed to book a job. I was filled with all this juicy talent, but I didn’t know what I was doing or where to put it. So what did I do? More of what I was familiar with - classes and plays. I didn’t even consider the fact that I moved to the Film and Television capital. So after spinning around for quite some time, I finally met and signed with several agents who didn’t know what to do with me because I was clearly development. While sitting on their shelf, I became discouraged and confused about why I couldn’t get into casting offices when I had all this talent that was certainly perfect for their projects.

By the time I hit my 3rd year, I ran out of money and had to juggle 2 jobs along with my passion to succeed as an actress. Through networking, I booked my first Television show. Had already gotten my SAG card when I first arrived through a Film role - which btw was not a good thing because I needed to work roles in Film to build my reel and all the big ones were non-union. Sound familiar? This business is really a catch 22, but there are ways around it folks. I made up a great new name and started working non-stop in Feature Films - built a killer reel and met the most incredible Personal Manager in the world - Rachel Kae from Transworld Management. This woman transformed my career and changed my life. She taught me about marketing and packaging and she gave me the insight on how to run a successful acting business. I followed her directions obediently. I shot new photos that were specific to my casting, matched them with my demo and started booking. She taught me about Thank You Cards - Postcards to promote myself - and how momentum creates a career. She used to say that, “Tenacity was the key and to enjoy the journey, not the destination.” She kept telling me to practice on the people that don’t count, so when the people that did count asked to see me, I would be ready. At that time, I must have booked at least 10 Television shows and 8 Films. After Rachel passed away, I took everything I learned from her and became a Personal Manager. During that time I had coached a friend’s kid for a lead in a Feature Film and she booked it. That’s when The Lyndon Technique was born. After running the Management Company for 9 years and learning about the inner workings of the business along with developing my 15 Guideline Map To Booking, I was ready to go out into the world on a new path - to teach actors what I wish I had known had I been me. By the way, if you want to know the pitfalls and detailed dark truth, well... that’s more of an “R” rated book. Like Rachel used to tell me, “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.”•

California Dreamin

he personification of California lies within the festivals, theme parks, and local events that flourish throughout the state every weekend in every major city and outlying dot on the Thomas Guide mapbook.

One of the best know and most attended little known attractions in Southern California is the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade a.k.a. Downtown Santa Monica. There are many reasons why people gather in the 3 block stretch that hosts upwards of 3 to 5,000 every weekend. Unique stores, famous chains, old & new architecture, movie theatres, movies galore, and not to mention, the gorgeous weather amost year round. Prior to 1965 Third Street was just another throughway of Santa Monica’s hustle and bustle tourist routes traveled to the coastline. It was the same year the City Of Santa Monica converted the flow of traffic to convert one of the first pedestrian malls in the U.S. The City created a $13 milion 501 (c)(3) between 1986 and 1989 which revitalized the 3rd Street Promenade that attracted an additional $500 million of private investors. An estimated $13 million is raised annually by tenant PA G PAE G108 E 108

assesments,, taxes, parking revenue, and other funds to fuel the Promenade Management. The operating expenses are used for maintainance and repair of public improvements, cleaning parking structures and pavements, landscaping, The Santa Monica Police Department services, utilities and marketing programs The money is spent to keep the public coming back and the surroundings clean and safe for all to enjoy. With 4 movie theatres showing first-run films, both independent & foriegn, the area has 21 screens for viewing. Shopping and dinning is endless with more than 60 stores and kiosks and 25 plus restraunts, bars, clubsm and pubs. There are also several theatre troupes, magic shows, and museums of rare and collectable eye candy for show and sale.
